Story

Vestaria Saga tells the story of international conflict between a powerful empire and a small coastal kingdom. When an imperial ship is set ablaze near the port of Meleda, it sparks a cascade of events that thrusts young warrior Zadrian into a war for the future of his kingdom. On the run from a vicious imperial force and short on allies, Zade and his small band of knights must make difficult decisions to ensure that Meleda's princess, and the very future of its lineage, remain intact.

However, not everything is as it seems, and forces in the dark corners of the continent conspire. The stage is set, and the pieces have begun to move.

Vestaria Saga is a fantasy tactics RPG very much similar to Fire Emblem. It's decent, but technical side of things makes it a hard sell.

This game has original Fire Emblem developer involved. It's an amatuer free project but the English translation is only available on Steam. If you are not familiar with these games it's a hardcore tactical RPG where you move a small army of individuals - all unique with their own classes, abilities and progression biases - through the series of scenarios. Your characters grow in power but in a very limited way and you have almost no control over it. If anything, the growth mechanic is there to force you to rely on different characters, as progression is randomized and you may end up with some chracters being more powerful than the others. There's permadeath so you're incenitivized to play the game "perfectly" without ever losing a character. The scenarios are big and interesting and varied, but their scripted nature may feel constraining as more often than not you'll have to replay the scenario after you know what happens in it (like where do enemy reinforcements come from, what happens when you capture an objective etc). Compared to some other similar games the characters are not that unique, some of them have the same class and differ by stats spread and passive special traits that are never defining and are often triggered randomly so that you can't rely on these traits.

The story is simple and serviceable. Don't expect complex and varied characters of modern games like Three Houses, the characters here are just a background for the story and you hardly hear from them after their introduction. It's perfectly fine in that regard, the game knows what it is.

What is not fine is the technical state of the game. I would advise most people against playing it even if it was free. Apparently it's made using some sort of RPG maker software and a lot of the art and sound does sound extremely generic and out of place. In the very first frame of the game you can see compression artifacts in art. Characters look like they're from different games and the faces were assigned at random. The controls aren't great, the UI seems to be worse than GBA FE games I played 20 years ago. If you don't enable unimpressive combat animations you won't see combat stats. Trading and using items is a nightmare. And somehow the game made in modern times has 4:3 screen ratio.

If you have high tolerance to junk like this you are likely to enjoy it. I couldn't. It's sad, really, because the gameplay itself is satisfying except for some odd quirks like scenarios sometimes requiring you to march people through empty space without any enemies for many turns. Go in with care and maybe you'll love this game.

I've played a few similar games in the past (most recently - Banner of the Maid, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark and Symphony of War) and in comparison to them Vestaria Saga has a few issues because of which I dropped the game.
- Primitive engine. The engine of the game is a bit primitive. Controls are edited in the .ini file, the default gamepad control scheme is strange (thankfully the top rated community layout solves the issue), plus skipping / fast forwarding cutscenes before the mission start and then using "Select Units" menu would crash the game.
- Grinding. A lot of maps have "spawn" points that spawn enemies for N turns. You can block them with your units and then proceed to the main objective, but this will leave you without precious EXP. My first run I did exactly that and ended up starting a new run because I reached a point where my characters were severly underleveled and were getting easily killed by the enemies. In the next run I decided to grind these spawn points which helper significantly - instead of lv 3 charcters in chapter 5 most of my characters were around lvl 10 or even higher. However, grinding random bandits map after map is not particularly interesting and is something I try to avoid in similar games since I simply don't find grinding to be interesting.
- Too much randomness. The game uses randomness quite a lot, both in how your stats grow and how much damage you can deal / enemes can deal. For example, many units have Multi-strike ability (which gives them %chance to trigger more attacks) and all units can crit (which is also % chance). You send your gladiator (one of the strongest units, had around 40hp in my case) to fight an enemy unit and that unit can deal somewhere from 10 to 40 damage, in one instance that enemy triggered Multi-strike + both strikes were crits killing my gladiator instantly, in another instance (after a reload) it did like 10 hp of damage. Such variance makes it difficult to plan your actions.
- Maps are too long. You often need more than 30 turns to simply complete the map (no matter what you do). For example, one map features crossing a desert where the movement is quite slow, in another map you need to escort an NPC from corner to another and it takes her around 30 rounds to do so and every round you have to move all your units one by one which is not fun. I essentially stopped playing after this map, because when I loaded the next map it looked like it would take even more time. From what I've read the final map takes anywhere from 4h to 18h(!) to complete (18h is most likely if you don't disable combat animations). Some maps where you can grind can take more than 40-50 turns.
- Bad map design. Maps often contain secrets or optional objectives which is good. However, it many cases you have to use special units (thief that can opend chests/doors or a flying unit that can reach places the rest of the team can't) and the way the maps are designed usually requires you to spend a lot of time moving these units from one points to another. For example, a map has three chests, two of them behind doors. Only your thief can open chests, so you already have to spend most of the map time moving him from one point to another. One door can only be unlocked with a key which is at the end of the map, so you first need to move some unit (most likely the thief to simplify the next part) to the key, get it, get back to open the door and then use your thief to open the chest. In addition, optional objectives often require you to deal with elite enemies and due to the randomness of things I found it to be difficult to complete a map with all objectives without reloading the game quite a lot.
- A lot of reloading if you want to achieve all optional objectives. The game warns you on the Difficulty Selection screen that you will need to be prepared to reload, realod and reload more, but I don't find such design very entertaining. I like tactical games that rely on planning your actions, not on hoping that the next couple of enemies will not crit and kill your main characters (which leads to game over). Here, if you want to achieve optional objectives / collect all the secrets you will have to take risky actions which due to randomness might result in your units being killed (you could probably avoid that by grinding levels on every map when possible, but that's boring).
- Primitive combat system Just recently played a great game called Our Adventurer Guild and the combat system of Vestaria Sage is super primitive compare to the combat system of that game (or of any tactical game really). No active skills, no buffs, no debuffs, no skill trees (level up you Guardian to lvl 20, upgrade to a new class called Great Guardian with an expensive item, level up that class to lvl 20 again - still nothing new in how the unit fights, no unique abilities, no interesting active skills). Every fight is pretty much two units bashing each other and weapons are what matter the most - how many attacks you get, how much damage you do and the same for the opponent. Compare that to Our Adventurer Guild where each class has several skill trees, so units of the same class are different and that has a bunch of active skills - buffs (apply some Fire Damage to a unit), debuffs (chill/shock/stun a unit), whirlwind attacks, charge attacks, power attacks that deal more damage, but require more resources, swift attacks that deal damage, but require less action points. Now combine the swift attacks of your ranger with a poison buff to stack tons of poison DoT on a boss. Now lay a trap that halts the boss (reducing its movement to 0), to get some more poison DoT going on. Maybe use your rogue to add some Bleeding DoT as well. Use your mage to spawn some stone spikes to force the boss spend time destroying them, so that you could get even more DoT stacked. Vestaria Saga has nothing. Whether it's a knight or a mage or a ranger, all you do is just attack, attack and attack other units directly.

Overall, even though I like fantasy tactical games, I cannot recommend Vestaria Saga and instead recommend looking for something else, like Banner of the Maid, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark, Symphony of War or maybe Our Adventurer Guild.
