If you have half an hour to spare Rainbow Step is a wonderful way to spend it. For a game revolving around puzzles and platforming most of the time I was just absorbing the atmosphere, finding quiet corners between the grand scenes to tuck myself into. I would be lying if I said its a perfect game but that is also what I adore about it, it plays like a fond memory. The world it presents is full of questions that have no answers and I truly want to run into the skybox to learn more. This game would not be out of place with a disk quietly whirring in a PS2.
Cute little game with lovely visuals :)
The soundtrack can be a bit repetitive but the compositions are still nice and vibey
Very short little game but very vibrant and unique. If any Okami likers are out there, they'd like this. Some things are a little slow paced game wise (if you mess up, gotta slowly make your way back) but I really liked it.
Cool. I'm shit at platformers. wish there were more puzzles and more interesting puzzles
So glad this was recommended to me, one of the most soothing and visually rich games I've played in a while. The puzzles are very simple, and the story abstract and dreamlike, especially the final level with its beautifully surreal atmosphere. If you're looking for a challenge, this game may not be for you - however, if you want a game that feels like wandering through a forest or listening to the sound of the rain, then it comes highly recommended.
It'll take you about 30 minutes to an hour to complete and is charming the whole way through. It has almost PSX vibes and is all around cozy. It is well worth the time and money if you want to play something relaxing and cheerful.
I play a LOT of platformers and while this one is a little jank around the edges I still very much enjoyed what I played. If you are looking for something very chill and comfy with little to no thought needed then I think you'll enjoy this game. It's incredibly simple in that cozy kind of way without it detracting from the experience and there is a nice feeling of progression from level to level.
I learned of the game from Hazel on YouTube and I'm glad I checked it out. The visuals alone are a reason to play this game, it's absolutely stunning in the way it looks like a painting at all times. I've seen many games try to go for this kind of aesthetic but this one really is one of the best at pulling it off. The game also routinely had me going 'wow look at that!' which is impressive for a game that only lasts a little over 30 minutes. Play this game!
Cute and relaxing platformer. Somewhat lacking in substance, but it's a nice way to spend half an hour
Gorgeous, perfectly sized game that fits its price. The biggest problem I had is how the last stage's manta gimmick overstays its welcome with one too many iterations right before the game ends, and that the looping background music doesn't loop very cleanly with how abruptly it stops then starts again.
Rainbow Step doesn't push any industry boundaries, but rather choose to settle cozily into its niche of small art project. For its price of just under 3 dollars, this is a good game if you've been feeling burned out by playing the same game for a week straight. Think of it as a snack sized Abzu or Journey: the scale of the game and length of play have been turned down, but it's nice to have something you can play something to refresh the eyeballs and your brain in the video game equivalent of a cat nap.
Honestly the biggest tragedy of this game is its length allowing people to play the entirety of the game, thoroughly enjoy it, and still have over an hour and a half to refund get a refund from Steam. There is something good here, and I hope the devs are properly compensated for their work by those who play it.
Such a simple but beautiful little game full of rainbows which I always appreciate but um... did I kill that whale at the end? 😧🐳
A short, simple, and relaxing game, Rainbow Step is like stepping into a watercolor painting. All 3 levels are fun, but the final level with the Purple sky and floating crystal rocks and marine life is my favorite. A short game to get when it's on sale. If you play through the levels more than once, I recommend playing some of your favorite music in the background. "Rainbow Connection" and "Seven Wonders" are two songs I enjoyed listening to while playing this.
It's definitely by a small studio and is only ~30mins long, but you can tell a lot of love was put into making the 3 areas. The platforming and puzzles are very basic, but the overall style is unique.
A very simple, but cute platform game suitable for children. Pretty graphics and peaceful music to relax you. Beautiful ambience especially in the purple world. Lovers of the aquatic world would love this part. There are only 3 worlds; green, red and purple.
I played on keyboard and controls were a bit slow and clunky at times. Camera was often in the wrong place when you have to jump from a moving sting ray.
Story is a bit ambiguous. In the opening scene, you see some girls doing a rain dance and a whale floating above sending rain. The whole world is flooded and humans swept away. Your character is sent to bring balance back to the world and restore life. It had a touch of the game Journey with the character wearing a cloak and pinging icons to activate them. Once restored, you travel via a rainbow to the next area.
You are accompanied by a butterfly who is your guide and directs you where to go. There is a lot of hand holding, so for those looking for a challenge, you won't find it here.
Game is very short. Took me longer than most because I suck at platforming. Most people can do this in 30-50 mins, others in 1 hr. I took over 100 mins at a leisurely pace.
If you're looking for a lazy, simple, calming game to play to de-stress or to take a break from all your hack and slash....this is it!! If you're looking for exciting action...look elsewhere. Buy on sale. 7/10.
Surprisingly lovely little exploration game. Light platforming and puzzle elements. The music, sfx, and art were far better than I expected and I really liked my time with it. Very short but it seems to have been a student game from what I can see. I'd love to see a full game with art and music like this.
The only real gripes I have with it are a lack of most common options in the Settings and that it is entirely linear. The options available are Graphics (High/Medium/Low) and Display (Fullscreen/Windowed). It'd be nice to be able to disable the motion blur, adjust resolution, adjust control settings, and adjust audio settings.
Regardless of the settings, this student project has great music and a charming art style. I readily recommend spending the 50 or so minutes with it.
A very short, yet very relaxing game.
The controls are simple, the colors breath-taking, the design simplistic yet elegant.
Finally the soundtrack. The sonudrtrack for this game goes perfectly with the calm athmosphere.
This is a great came to just sit down in front of, for an hour (or less), and enjoy the calming melodies as you awaken the World around you.
Rainbow Step is an incredibly simplistic, relaxing, enjoyable half hour experience. The game seems to take some influences from Journey and Abzu as far as its pacing and somewhat ethereal settings. While what you see in Rainbow Step is immersive and has a variety of effects (water you have to jump over, flowers sprouting beneath your feet, rain falling from above, etc...) the locales are extremely limited. You see only 2 locations in this game, one being a rainy forest type area and the second being a surreal area with pink and purple hues and various aquatic life swimming above you through the air.
I had fun exploring the areas and did find myself just staring off at the horizon pretty often taking in the views that the game provides, however I also was starting to become quite fatigued with the repetitive "rainbow riding" effect that transports you from one area to the other. This is cool the first few times, but when the game is still insisting on the same effect (always with the exact same "WOOOOOOOOOOOOP" sound effect as you ride along) at the end of the game as it was at the start I started to find it was getting a bit tiresome. You can't control the character at all while you are riding on the rainbows, which would have made them a little more fun than just watching the character glide along to the next area of the level.
The only character actions you have on Rainbow Step are walk, jump, and a ping which activates various triggers to open doors. Rainbow Step has no collectibles or much of anything to see beyond its mostly linear format. You can wander around behind certain objects and down separate paths, but you will never find anything tucked away outside of the next very simplistic puzzle to complete. One puzzle consisted of little more than walking up to a few scattered buttons and pressing the activate button (a sort of twirl / ping that the strange player character does) until you happen to press the activate button on the ones required to progress. There is no indication which of the buttons will work and which won't, and consisted of just "trying it on all of them" which was kind of bogus. There is very little thought required to complete any of the puzzles and I was never stumped to find a solution.
The game may unlock an extra feature after completing it, but I wouldn't know as the game completely crashed during its end credits.
Rainbow Step is a very leisurely (and limited) experience, however I did enjoy its very brief playtime. The game does a good job of creating a reflective, introspective atmosphere but its scant playtime and shallow gameplay are things to take into consideration. If you're looking for a carefree, relaxing experience give it a go but I would suggest snagging it on sale as it's one of the shortest games I have ever played.
Beautiful game, so relaxing to play. Its so colourful and pretty even if a little short. I'd love to see it expanded on, maybe a few more levels would be amazing but for what I paid and the fun I had playing it; its definately worth it.
Rainbow step consists of gorgeous visuals and music, with each consecutive level outdoing the previous one.
Its a peaceful, cute relaxing experience where you guide a cute little yoko-taro looking guy around to undo all the damage the rain has caused. You transform already good looking environments into gorgeous ones.
Rainbow Step is a cute 30-40 minute experience, with 3 levels for 3$; definitely worth the price of admission.
The game runs solid and has full controller support.
Highly recommend for a relaxing time! :D
Rainbow Step
Rainbow Step is a very easy, relaxing, very short & very beautiful 3D adventure/puzzler game, suitable for all age groups. The story is all visual, so there are NO narrators OR words used in this lovely visual story. The little blue butterfly is your guide, so you cant really go wrong, she will stay close to you as you progress & guide you.
The Game only has 3 levels that you can go back to once unlocked at any given time, & all with very pretty effects you will see as you progress through. I personally wish the game was much longer, because I want to see more! I feel developer could always add a few more levels which depict the rainbow colours as what was intended. So game needs a yellow and blue level added I feel. Maybe developers will think and add something a little later once developed, so we shall see what happens if they even read these reviews!
The game also plays great with the Xbox controller OR you can choose to use keyboard & mouse, the choice is yours.
The music is a pleasure to listen to while progressing though as well.
I feel the price is very fair for what your getting & what you will see with in this very pretty game, is does NOT disapoint. This game is a very sweet hidden gem, amongst all those asset flippers I call junk. This game is certainly NOT junk ok
Game does need a few steam achievements added at some point in time, and perhaps some lovely trading cards. I can see some lovely badges, emoticons and backgrounds could come from this game easily in the future, thats if these developers are listening & reading ;D .
Game length is around 60 minutes, I played for longer. So time should never matter, if you choose to play though mutiple times at your own pace and leisure.
Lovely platformer/adventure game, beautiful & relaxing. Light puzzles and no talking does mean it's on the shorter side. No problem with gamepad or keyboard, controls cannot be remapped and desktop resolution is used. Great for unwinding after a long day!

Cheap game that isn't trash or an asset flip? Miracles never cease.
@Devs. Please consider adding a few steam achievements? :)
