Classic.
First of all, only play this game if you consider yourself incredibly patient. You cannot save midlevel and you are going to have to watch the same cutscenes, shoot the same people, sneak around the same hallways, etc. over and over again. This game is also extremely bad at signposting / telegraphing. There are moments where it feels like the game goes out of its way to teach you that you cannot do something that you actually can. Some of the levels I thought were most difficult became incredibly easy after learning some small detail about them in a walkthrough. There are also a few terrible levels towards the middle of the game that you have to dredge through that involve a lot of running around big empty spaces. Despite all this, I think it's a very charming eurojank game with some pretty great levels towards the end (the hotel level is especially good and more reminiscent of the later entries) and a pretty killer atmosphere. Another thing to note is that this isn't really a full on stealth game like you might expect. It feels more like they came up with the premise of what a game where you play as a hitman would be, and then they tried exploring that concept from many different angles. It's extremely experimental in terms of design and structure for better or worse. Only hop into it if you know what you're getting into, otherwise just check out the later games.

greatest game of all time (those who know)
The birth of one of the best gaming franchises on the market.
It has definitely aged but was miles ahead of its time!
Amazing game but extremely hardcore :)
Graphics looks quite outdated these days (as this thing supposed to work on 3dfx!), but if you like old games and haven't played this -> go buy and play it!
I love speedrunning this game, truly a classic stealth game.
Huge shoutout to Jesper Kyd and old ioi devs!
how i can open the suticase button?
i need to use the bathroom
Definitely jank (it´s 24 years old) but still an enjoyable challenge. Most of these mission were remade in Contracts.
I would not recommend this as it is at times very dated and you can play these missions through hitman contracts with a more put together storyline
funny looking man
the controls are extremely outdated and the gameplay is super janky
this may be one of the most poorly aged games ever 10/10
This is still a good game. It works no problem, and the only drawback is its age. I haven't experienced any bugs, though it is almost necessary to use a guide (which i did for every other hitman game). I still come back to replay from time to time and never used cheats to complete any mission. I guess people are just used to latter instalments "handholding"
The gameplay is terrible and stupid, you'll have to retry some missions for hours until you can get them done.
Pretty good game for the most part. Main issues are that the game is quite vague at most points and has a decent amount of difficult parts which is fine, but having to start from the beginning is not fun especially if you have to run for 5 mins straight to get back to that point. A guide is heavily recommended for this as there are parts you can get completely stuck on or not find the solution to on your own. Always remember to buy armour. It is a noticeable difference from using the armour and not using it. Also the controls are horrendous. You will want to remap them. At least the game lets you remap everything. Game play wise it is very fun but can be annoying since you have to do things perfectly, like using a garrote to kill someone. If you time it slightly wrong or do it slightly too far away you are screwed a lot of the time. Overall this game is a 8/10
This is an old classic. Works fine in Windows 11. This is playable in Ubuntu 24.04 but controls are worse. For example random firing without pressing the trigger.
This game is gem, its so fun to play missions, the original hitman is worth playing
There are patches and mods available which is required to run this game on latest pc
OG Hitman expirience
I really tried to enjoy this game. Despite the mixed reviews on Steam, I finally bought the game on sale and I went into it with an open mind and even excitement to see the beginning of the Hitman franchise (this is my first experience with the Hitman games) and an early 2000's experience. Unfortunately, time has not done this game justice, and even though I did have some fun while playing this game, I ultimately found distaste with it. The lack of autosave or really any sort of save feature is immediately annoying and I too often turned to online guides and videos to see how to get past each level rather than figuring it out myself due to how large some of the maps are, how long some missions are, and how each time I died I would have to start over from the very beginning of the mission. The game, for this reason, felt far more tedious rather than fun, and by the end of the game I was dreading starting the game back up and was just trying to push through and move on to Hitman 2.
I wish I could recommend this game but I really cannot. The only reason I could see someone buying this game is if it goes on sale (I got it for 79 cents) and you wanna add to your Steam collection or you wanna play a PS2 era game, but good luck having fun.
4/10
Very криво, very не рекомендую
The game works as it pleases. Enemies either don't see you even when you're right in front of them, or they spot you from 50 kilometers away. Many levels can only be completed in the exact way the developers intended, meaning you have to go to some random, unknown place on the map that allows you to progress. Sometimes a level breaks because it turns out you weren't supposed to kill a specific NPC (even though this was never mentioned anywhere), or you weren't supposed to visit a certain location, but instead, you had to go somewhere else first. All of this is paired with broken stealth mechanics. To motivate players even further, the developers decided not to include saves in the game at all. Considering that the game is supposed to be stealth-based, but the stealth doesn't work, it's just awful. I have to go through the same section 50 times just to get past one moment in the exact way the developers planned, all while avoiding bugs and clunky mechanics. The game promises variety, but there is none. It's especially funny that some moments can only be completed by shooting down a ton of enemies, and there's no other way, even though this is supposed to be a stealth game. 1.5 out of 10.
Terribly outdated today, especially the controls.
The Start of an amazing series buuuuuuuuuut time did not act kindly to this game so its very hard to go back too
i lost my will to live beacuse of this game. 0/0 experience.
trash,, and ur gonna gonna stay that way.. fruitcakkakke.. ..
Fun and puzzling. It really makes you think. I recommend playing this without watching YouTube, it is very rewarding once you learn how to complete the mission.
**DO NOT BUY THE BUNDLE**
This right here makes half the bundle impossible to play unless you want to jump through several hoops to play it. And if you have 2+ hours on ANYTHING else in the bundle, they won't refund you for any of it. Seems like a scam to me.
And when you DO finally jump through those hoops, it still might not even work. Then this game has 100 other problems, it's not worth it. If you're here to relive some golden days, don't bother. 0/10. Bundle is a rip off.
2/5 games potentially work and the last one is just a single mission from a pre-order bonus absolution had years ago. Don't waste your money.
Most people talk about how bad Absolution was, but to me this takes cake for being the worst Hitman game and aged terribly. Bad controls, bad graphics, (even for the time) no auto save, the disguise system is bad, I can go on. If you want a classic Hitman experience, you're better off playing the sequel Silent Assassin or Contracts. Most of the missions from this game were remade in Contracts.
The controls are so god awful and the game really suffers from its age, it's just an all-around pain to play.
As a nostalgia game that is being offered for sale again, it is a very successful and beautiful production for its time. However, it is a very old game after all and therefore, there may be some bugs and illogicalities in both the scenario and the game. Therefore, you should not have too many expectations when buying it. If you want to experience nostalgia and also if you miss the old games, I say buy it while it is on sale and experience it.
Great game, took me 54 HOURS to beat it
Controls are unbearable, buggy, aged so bad...
PLEASE LET ME SAVE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ADD A SAVE FEATURE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I NEED TO SAVE PEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ⚧️
Aged like milk
Failed the tutorial 5 times, would be easier to become a hitman in real life. The sneaking has me feeling like i'm in an episode of Scooby Doo , What's that coming over the hill? It's a retarded hitman
The controls are unbearable
Hitman: Codename 47, released in the year 2000, is the inception and very first game in the renowned Hitman series. As someone who has played the later entries in the series, i can clearly see that this is where it all began. The core gameplay and its mechanics were created in this title. Throughout different levels and locations, you are tasked with eliminating targets, or completing different objectives, like securing documents or items. This game is branded as a game that lets you find your own way. This may be true for the later titles but for Codename 47, there really is mostly only one correct way to finish the mission. The game features big open maps, which are pretty detailed for the time, which can be a good thing, however most of the time you are just left aimlessly wandering around it trying to figure out where to go. In this game, you have no clue what actions you can and can't perform without the guards getting angry at you. If they do, they'll shoot and kill you. Which wouldn't be a problem if you could simply save at any given time. But that's not the case. If you die, you have to restart. You can choose to respawn, but since all guards will remain hostile this is not really an option.
That being said, in some missions there are clues left at manageable spots for you to find. However this is sadly only possible in a handful of levels. The levels themselves are mostly expansive and all have their own features. In this game, the levels are cohesive and based off of each other. There are multiple missions in one location, like for example the very first one in China. You are tasked with taking out a big bad criminal, but to get there you first have to do a few other missions with minor goals. The game also features a pretty cool soundtrack, which i find is often overlooked. Along with the feel of these old maps they might even create a slight feel of kenopsia, at least for me, which i like. Before actually starting a mission you can choose to buy gear for you to bring along from the money you have earned on previous missions. This is an incentive for the player to do missions silently as casualties deduct from the money you earn. However i have found that in some levels, like the famous "Traditions of the Trade", it's pretty useless since you can't bring any guns through the metal detectors. And by the last mission, i had amassed so much money that i couldn't even spend it. I'm certain it wouldn't have been a big issue either if i were to spend a little more on previous missions, basically rendering this feature a little pointless. Speaking of the last mission, it's not exactly great either. Hitman games have always wanted the player to only take out their targets without causing any casualties. It was never supposed to be a shooter, yet the last mission is. You have to painfully fight against 10 NPC's that can instantly kill you, whilst you are stuck having to deal with the clunky old controls. This finale is not exciting. It's painful and frustrating.
All of this however, is pretty manageble. Codename 47 is an old game after all, and such issues are to be expected when playing and looking at it from a modern standpoint. There is still one, big issue however and again it has to deal with the modern IOI. This game is an awful pain in the back to get to run on a modern system. I had to spend about an hour figuring out how to even start it without crashing, getting it to run in a fullscreen window, and setting the resolution to 1920x1080. That's because there was no real effort put in into making this game accesible. It was a simple re-release without putting much thought into it. I know it was never supposed to be a remake. But that was never the problem. They could've at least put some effort into making this game playable on a newer computer. There is a great guide by CyrusVonNox01 on the steam forum that helped me get it to work, i can only recommend it.
Despite all this, if you are a dedicated fan of the Hitman series i think it is worth it to take a look at where it all started. And despite all the frustration i still had some fun with this game. I actually wouldn't recommend starting out with this game if you're looking to play through the Hitman series. You don't really get that true "Hitman feeling" until the later titles. This game is basically a proof of concept with a lot of errors, that had to be improved upon before they would later become the masterpieces these games are today.
Final Score: 5/10
Hard and has bugs but still fun.
I was introduced to Hitman through the recent World of Assassination Trilogy. After it quickly became one of my all time favorites, I decided it would be fun to revisit the older games. I also made sure to set my expectations low, since this was the first in the series and came out a VERY long time ago. After playing this game through to the end, I am heartbroken to say that I think this game is abysmal, even for it's time.
For starters, I had to jump through a bunch of hoops just to get the game to function properly. I had a feeling I would deal with this since it's an old game, but still.
Anyway, there are a few reasons that I can't stand this game, despite it beginning a legendary series. In other Hitman games, you're given an objective(s), and are free to complete it however you see fit. Not in Codename 47. Although it is TECHNICALLY still true, I swear all of these levels (with the exception of one mid game level) must be approached in a VERY specific way in order to complete them without dying or killing A LOT of innocent guards.
Following up from that is the enemy AI. The stealth mechanics weren't fully realized in this game yet, and what that leads to is enemies randomly detecting you for wearing a certain disguise, or by entering an area or performing an action that you are given no indication you aren't allowed until you're already being shot at. You do usually have multiple lives before restarting the level, especially on easier difficulties, but there's just one problem. Enemies are still alerted, meaning you'll probably just die again unless you kill all of them, which usually results in failing the mission entirely for some stupid reason.
All of this wouldn't be as much of an issue, but much like the rest of the series, levels in this game take forever to finish (after the first few, which might as well be an extended tutorial.), and you can't save in the middle of a mission either, only at the beginning of the next one. Because of all this, it is entirely possible you'll have to redo 30 minutes or possibly even more. Normally I wouldn't have an issue, but because of the abysmal AI and the game not giving you crucial information, it probably wouldn't even be my fault.
Also not helping matters is that, even if everything I mentioned before wasn't an issue, most of these levels are garbage to begin with. There's a lot of running through empty streets and wastelands with nothing happening, as well as levels that are either totally pathetic or absolutely brutal (the levels in the second area somehow manage to be all three at the same time.).
To say a few nice things about this game, I thought the guns and general combat were pretty good for the time this game came out. Whenever I did have to fight (which happens a lot), I knew I could rely on my weapons to get me through. Another thing this game does really well is the soundtrack. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it fits Hitman perfectly. And finally, that one level I did mention earlier is actually very well designed, as it actually puts all of your skills to use, and it offers freedom that the other levels just don't. It's the only level to feel like an actual Hitman level, and I just wish more levels followed it's example.
Overall, I can respect Codename 47 for being the first in an incredible series, as well as having some of it's most iconic moments which are still referenced today. However, the actual game itself is genuinely one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a video game, and that seriously hurts me to say given the WOA Trilogy is my most played game on Steam.
In Hungary if metal detector go off police have permission to shoot you 2000 times
barely can move, pretty buggy smh, aged so bad..
