Mad Crown is a roguelike RPG set in a post-apocalyptic dieselpunk world. As an explorer, you are in search of the legendary crown. Make use of limited resources and meticulous tactics to battle an eerie enemy through the procedurally generated dungeons of a mutated world.



World Settings
Mad Crown is a dungeon crawling roguelike RPG set in a dieselpunk world set hundreds of years after the human race destroyed the world with nuclear weapons. The nuclear Armageddon awoke god like leviathans from beneath the earth’s surface and a doomsday battle between these creatures devastated the planet's surface. Now a hundred years after the fabled battle of the gods, Humans try to carve out an existence in the mutated land filled with repulsive creatures.
Rumors have surfaced about the existence of the Mad Crown. A powerful artifact said to hold untold power that would rival the gods. Thus, you, like many others before have set out to find the Mad Crown .

pretty good dungeon crawler if you have the time.
my only problem is that the game becomes super slow midway in the story.

Fun if you've already played Darkest Dungeon and Deep Sky Derelicts. Doesn't seem as in depth as either of them, but if you want more of the "Darkest-Dungeon-like" genre it isn't bad by any means.

How does this game have 80% Positive (Very Positive)? It's Full Release, but it feels like a recently launched Early Access game. And not one of the good ones. I've seen less bought reviews on TripAdvisor when visiting certain southern european countries.

Game has English translation, but the Achievements are still mostly in hieroglyphics despite being out for half a year! Nevermind that there's an English translation, you'll prob'ly not understand a lick of the story anyway and there is zero in the way of Tutorial. Devs said; "This is our game, it's very convoluted, makes little to no sense, also here's a blank sheet of paper for a manual - go have fun!"

Tactics, crafting and some grinding..
Good music and I think the artstyle is okay.
Some translations are bad or absent, but I do not care much about that.

It also has this weird mechanic where you need other people to rescue your equipment if you die.
So far it has worked out, since I posted my rescue codes both on the steam forum and on the official discord.
The rescuer gets rewards too.

I have already put over 10 hours active playtime into it, and progressed almost halfway in the story. Playing pretty carefully. In other words grinding up equipment before I take on the next stage boss.
It is a quite challenging game.
Worth the full price.

I enjoy this game so thumbs up!

Felt in love with this game, its super challenging, super fun, love the equipment logic that has to be crafted or found in dungeon, never get bored, in 30 hours still didnt end a lot of modes!
highly recommended!

Whole help section ingame is in chinese. Certain in-level mechanics are also in chinese but you will figure out that healing shrine has the yes or no button regardless which language theyre written in.

Biggest no no is the game mechanics are never fully explained. What does your fate really matter for a run? what do "cost of fel for S.o.r." matter?
Which item are merge-able? same sword aint mergeable but some bone armor would merge with theif shoes...
Do joining the guild save your equipment if you die? do you have to post a rescue code on the devs facebook page to get rescued?
Its not game breaking but it would help to have those things explained in the ... help section... in english. (Altough I know we all really should start learning chinese for the near future new market economy superpower China.)

All in all, its fun, abit psychadelic steampunkish. Worth a try at least.

première heure de jeu, et je trouve ce jeu sympathique sans plus.
On sent l'inspiration Darkest dungeon dans le jeu et on retrouve les même mécaniques avec quelques déviations.
On parcourt des donjons généré aléatoirement ou on va se confronter a divers monstres/tresors/curio.
Le gros probleme pour moi vient de la personalisation casi inexistante des personnages mis a part les equipements.
Je m'attendais a pouvoir choisir mon set de sorts pour chaque personnage comme DD ou avoir au moins la possibilité de up mes sorts, mais non, nos persos ont des spells basique (tres basique en fait, une attaque, une attaque spé/heal, un sort dédié a la protection (sur les 5 perso que j'ai, tous sont de l'esquive + un effet kisscool pour le tour prochain, en gros c'est un bouton defend style jrpg) , et un passif lié au personnage)
Je trouve ca dommage parce que le jeu est magnifique le bestiaire tres interessant et le gameplay dans le donjon prenant (bien que trop couloir) ainsi que l'ost au poil.
On est sorti de l'early acess mais j'aurais bien voulu avoir plus au niveau des persos, je sens que quand je les aurais tous testé une fois, contrairement a d'autre RL et plus précisément DD, j'aurais peut etre pas la motivation de relancer le jeu, je sens que le coté rejouabilité sera en deca de pas mal d'autres roguelike.
Le prix est de 10 euros c'est pas très cher donc testez le quand meme.

Not so bad, but not so good.
Not enough personallisation of the characters in my opinion, 3 active skills for each character + 1 passive but you can't change them like DD do.
The gameplay looks like Darkest Dungeon a lot, but got some tweaks here and there.
Combat are ok but rather boring when you know you can't change the skills of characters unlike DD or many other roguelike. To improve characters you just got equipement but it's just a matter of which items got the better numbers instead of "this item give me this, but this one this what do i choose"
Good ost (really good), good atmosphere but the gameplay is not what ive expected in definitive.
For 10 euros it's a good game. it would cost more, i wouldn't recommend it.

Mad Crown has decent music and good, quirky artdesign. But those are the only two good hairs I can leave on the game.

For Gameplay, it's like somebody looked at all the worst parts of Darkest Dungeon and ported them into a whole new game.

Firstly, theres Hitchances. On mylast run I actually payed special attention to how many times my party actually hit versus missed their attacks. And the score threatened to break even a couple of times. This means that on a very basic level, combat difficulty is not governed by tactical choices or preparation, but more if the game is in the "mood" to let you actually connect attacks. I'm not saying that a very low-threat kind of combat system CANT work, but enemies hit their attacks just fine, and theres a certain mechanic that makes missing way more of a downside to the player than the AI.

If a Monster kills another Monsters, it upgrades itself by 5 Levels. From me mentioning this you can probably guess that there are certain scenarios where there's friendly fire. This would be a cute gimmick in most cases, but in Mad Crown it can mount to a lost run due to randomness. Say you beat an enemy to a sliver of health, and then proceed to miss EVERY attack afterwards on it. Eventually it'll get murdered by it's mates. If this happens once, it makes combat harder and will cost you more life and stamina. If it happens twice, you're boned unless you happen to have poison runes stocked (Since they deal percentages, and thus will kill lvl 100 Godzilla just as fast as Level 1 Godzilla). If it happens thrice (Yes, totally a thing), you can kiss your run goodbye.

Even beyond that, tactical choices are minimal. Every hero has 3 abilities and a passive. Can't level them up, cant customize them beyond what equipment you slap onto them. Which comes down to getting the best numbers, and not much else. What I think the game is TRYING to do, is balance the stack by providing the player with Inscriptions, or runes, or whatever you want to call them. They are one-use items that can be deployed in combat, to revive fallen heros, inflict enemies with statutes or even just straight damage them with an element. But here too, what you get and when is entirely random, and thus your ability to take advantage is minimal.

The crawling itself isnt doing the player any favours either. Traps are invisible until stepped on and will damage or inflict statues. Theres a fog of war which can make entirely impossible to tell where mosnter groups lurk, so theres no avoiding them either. There's random curse effects which afflict item in your packs, making them unuseable.

THe game sort of lures you in with it's quirky design and decent music, but makes it perfectly clear that it hates the player and doesnt want him to suceed or get anything. "No you take damage now." "No you're posioned now." "You now miss 5 times in a row." It isn't fun or interesting, it's random and a chore.

I realize this is harsh, but you can just tell nobody really put any thought into making Mad Crown an interesting challenge. Maybe they got tired of trying halfway trough and just started adding random qualifiers to everything.

I'm not gonna hold the barebones translation against the game, since it was basically only given out so you could "take a look". Def. dont go into this if you cant handle a little bit of engrish. But even if you can, honestly not worth the money. Darkest Dungeon does almost everything Mad Crown does, and better to boot. Stay away, at least until EA's over and we can see what the Dev tries to fix.

I thought I would write a first EA review and maybe update it later.

So I already played this game for a few hours and think this has the potential to be a great game.
THANKS a lot for the quick English language fix. It needs some trying to find the language option in the menu ( because the menu is Chinese), but once found, here we have a pretty nice English version of this game.

Now to the game itself:
Inspired by Darkest Dungeon (especially the combat and design), you lead a group of 4 characters into randomly created dungeons.
Moving around the map by view from above you have to avoid traps, loot, fight monsters and finally advance to next floor. This part of the game has its charm but could be graphically more appealing.
Combat itself however looks more polished in every way. With classical turn-based style you try to defeat your enemies.
You only have 4 basic actions but can use cards (you receive or collect over time) to launch powerful attacks, buffs or debuffs if required.
When all characters die, you return to town, lose all your items and only bring back TB (units to upgrade statuses). At the beginning you can simply retrieve your lost items from a guy in town, but this option is only temporarily (don't know why or when exactly it doesn't work anymore). Now I have to communicate a code to the community (don't know where :)) from which anyone can enter the code to release my lost items for me.
Being a rogue-like game, of course you are meant to restart from the beginning every time (only with your status upgraded), but retrieving some items would be nice ;)

I hope to incite more people to buy this game as I really like it and think it's a gem to be polished.
