The game is really fun, But it has complex understanding of exporing more areas, And i don't understand how to expand from one map, Instead i try to survive in one map with 84 alive.
I wish there was more, But i see the dev is getting weak of working on the game, and i understand him. Hopefully the game will have good life support of any sort. Like the steamwork we already have, Doesn't seem like people wanting to make mods/addons for the game kinda sad to see this happen :(
i would recommend. for people wanting alone time
Was fun enough for ~20h, seemed like a more accessible dwarf fortress. Then it decided to go dwarf fortress on me, and the citizens started to just randomly decide to die out of dehydration. Plenty of water available, they just decided not to drink. If I noticed in time, I could manually order them to move to a place near the water and they might drink. While dehydrated health plummets *very fast* so you have to notice it quickly and react immediately, and hope the AI wakes up and decides to drink. However there's only a small indicator on the screen when someone decides to do this. It's not fun, nor is it funny, so that's I guess it for this game for me.
Odd Realm review
I recently discovered Odd Realm, and after watching BlindiRL’s playthrough, I immediately thought, "I have to buy this!". Developed by a solo creator, with only the soundtrack commissioned, Odd Realm is an impressive and delightful gem in the colony sim genre.
From the moment you dive in, the game's charm becomes evident. The lovely pixel art style is both nostalgic and inviting, while the soundtrack perfectly complements the relaxing yet engaging gameplay. It brings to mind aspects of Dwarf Fortress, RimWorld, Songs of Syx, and KeeperRL, yet it maintains its own unique identity and soul.
Though it is a complex game, Odd Realm is more accessible than Dwarf Fortress and allows you to learn as you go, encouraging experimentation. After spending time familiarising myself with the menus navigation and gameplay nuances, everything becomes intuitive, and the joy of playing truly shines through. The user interface is well-designed, and tooltips are there to help you along the way, making the learning curve less daunting.
One of the standout features is the use of Z-levels, adding a deeper layer of strategy and immersion to colony management. It's a game with more depth than meets the eye, yet it's still a relaxing experience overall—perfect for those looking for something solid and fun. If you're just starting, I'd highly recommend IronSquid501’s Beginner Guide on Steam, and there's also a fantastic wiki that covers everything you need to know.
With planned mod support in the future, Odd Realm is only going to get better. If you enjoy colony sims and games with a lot of depth but still want a title that offers rewarding logic to both play and learn, Odd Realm is a must-play!
I’d also like to extend a big thank you to the developer for creating such a fantastic game. The care and dedication put into Odd Realm really shine through, and it's clear that a lot of love has gone into crafting an experience that is both enjoyable and deeply engaging. It’s a true achievement, especially from a solo developer, and I can’t wait to see how the game continues to evolve. Thank you for all your hard work!

Odd Realm has the potential to be great after its major bugs are fixed -- I like how it approaches world generation compared to other colony sims! But the several big gameplay bugs, unclear menu/lack of instructions, and lack of overall gameplay goals makes it hard to recommend Odd Realm unless you're both familiar with similar titles (Dwarf Fortress, etc) and can tolerate bugs/unclear UI/less overall "game" to play. But if you're into similar colony sims and looking for something new, you'll probably enjoy this.

What most people are complaining about right now isn't wrong:
The game does its utmost to be difficult for the player to understand, to figure out what to even do to make anything work.
The tutorial starts out somewhat hopeful, but just suddenly stops after telling you what stockpiles are.
Or maybe it bugs out, hard to say.
In other words, the tutorial gets you maybe the first 5-10% in when it comes to understanding how to do anything.
Of course, it does NOT tell you HOW to actually define what to put in a stockpile.
Or how to set what a room should do.
You gotta figure it all out yourself through trial and error and a lot of clicking around.
But this isn't like Dwarf Fortress where you can draw upon decades of online guides. So you'll do most of that blindly.
And once you have it somewhat figured out, you struggle with the game's default settings for rooms (which are often nonsensical, such as all production jobs being only priority 1, or almost all stockpiles being set to store EVERYTHING by default).
Or the game's AI being sometimes very weird (everyone fights to their death always, even children!).
Or the uniforms logic preventing NPCs from equipping ANYTHING except the specified items - don't have the specified gear? Too bad, now the NPC won't wear anything in that slot.
Many issues along those lines.
It is a complete mystery to me why the dev decided to release such an initially confusing game without proper tutorialization, better default settings and better AI in some regards.
This game should NOT have left Early Access when it did.
However, if you can somehow overcome all of those issues, what awaits you is a quite atmospheric and chill colony survival game that I can actually recommend, because the foundation is rock solid.
Just be aware you are in for a rough start or should wait for improvements.
Earlier versions of this game were more enjoyable.
Changes to the UI and worker logic have made this game clunky and a chore.
Trying to determine what a room needs to function is far more confusing than it used to be.
Ancients dying from sickness despite available resting places is incredibly frustrating.
A mixture of poor design decisions in the UI, AI behaviors and game rules leads to this being an extremely disappointing experience. Everything in the game is accessed through a series of expandable lists that remember their state, with menus being opened via the hotbar or hotkeys. Now, this just introduces extremely unnecessary tedium as for whatever reason the dev added a select all function but not a deselect all function, meaning if you want to use item filters, be prepared to really EXPERIENCE clicking a hundred check boxes. It's a cluttered mess that needs a redesign to be usable with any accuracy. AI have to be directly micromanaged to handle raids and have no reliable way to restrict their activities outside of telling them to hold position. They also sometimes refuse to eat or drink for seemingly no reason, resulting in death. This is a game about creating a perfectly functioning, strong colony and then watching it commit suicide because combat restrictions don't do anything, fortifications can't be reliably used as colonists will just scale right over them and enemy items are marked for automatic pickup, which the workers will immediately rush straight into an ongoing battle to grab and die for nothing. This game really seems to only be functional at the small scale, with performance and quality degrading significantly the longer a single colony is continued. There isn't a true administrative system going on, relying on basic rts controls, the ability to lock doors and a series of zones that you can designate for (some, not all) work orders to be auto generated on a single Z level. On top of the fact that it requires significant micromanagement, various bugs start to appear and a serious memory leak will slowly send your system into a nosedive. If it had the basics that you'd expect for a game like this, it'd probably be great, but it's behind in ways that just make it aggravating.
This game has a beautiful art style and potential to be a good game. It is unfortunate to see it released in this unfinished and confused state.
There doesn't seem to be a focus on any particular gameplay, or theme, just a mix of half implemented systems that don't really come together to make something interesting.
It feels like the developers ambition exceeded their ability to deliver. A smaller scale with tighter focus might have been a better start to build upon, rather than going big first and then trying to contract to something achievable.
As the game it is right now? No.
It's a pretty easy game once you figure out the UI and how to deal with hostile entities.
However, I get a lot of issues later in the game especially when my colony gets to around 70 population.
Many of the peeps would just stand idle dying from thirst and hunger even though there's tons of food and around 150 wells and multiple well houses. Even after managing the job permissions/priorities I just couldn't keep them from dying. They are more likely to die of thirst and hunger than they are to die from bandits.
Playing early game is enjoyable and cozy, yes. Playing late game is so utterly frustrating.
I don't feel like I've got my moneys worth tbh.
A relaxing colony sim with charming art and music, and tons of potential. The core gameplay is relatively relaxed and satisfying, and the devs have included the "bones" of a truly unique colony/empire management system. I do get the sense the game is still not entirely finished. I've encountered a few serious bugs, and progression/tension does stall relatively quickly. If this is a deal breaker for you maybe keep an eye on the devlogs, but I'd certainly recommend go ahead an jump in if you like colony sims. Overall, this title is a good time, and well worth the asking price. Kudos to Unknown Origin - keep up the good work.
Cosy colony builder with a fantastic soundtrack and atmosphere.
Need's some tender QoL updates methinks. Decent game but wouldn't say i've gotten my moneys worth out of it. Just struggle to pick it up.
An uncomprehensible mess.
Reading negative reviews about the complicated interface sold me on trying this game out. The interface isn't any harder to learn than Dwarf Fortress. Some of it is good, some of it is tedious but it's not entirely awful. A lot of care went into making the pixel graphics mesh well with everything. It doesn't always look great but it does a good job of making it easy to see what is happening most of the time.
The real letdown in this game is that while it has large variety of plants, animals and craftable items very little of it matters at all. The villagers have no likes or dislikes. They'll be just as happy to eat grass as much as a meat pie. They are just as happy with a decorated mansion as they are a 2x2 hut with a bed.
The only enemies I encountered were the weak group of bandits that show up every couple days and 2 spiders in a cave that froze to death before I could reach them. I kept digging down hoping to unleash something more interesting but all I found was a flooded cave and a 5x10 'dungeon' with an empty chest in it.
I guess this would all be fine if this game was still in early development but for a 1.0 steam release it all feels really empty.
UI is cumbersome and confusing.. cant even manage stockpiles
Despite liking a lot of the features; overall this feels really boring compared to other city builders. It also tends to get very laggy depending either on how long I play or how deep I dig.
A little planet filled with interesting races and a whole host of cool features just broke out into 1.0!
A very stylized colony sim that approaches fantasy from a cool, different angle and has a good time doing it!
Fun game for people that like Dwarf Fortress or the likes of that.
A little complicated to get into, but so it is with Dwarf Fortress. You need to gather the information yourself on the web.
- Just check out some recent Youtube tutorials/longplays etc. to see how things work and you're set. Make sure, that they are recent, so the mechanics are the current ones.
- It will take some time, but -again, like DF- it's worth the time
The game still needs fixing in some parts, but the developer is on it and the game gets frequent updates/fixes. Which is the most important part for me to recommend it right now.
- This game has quite a lot of potential and i have faith in the dev to make this a great one. Something that e.g. Gnomoria has failed to become, due to negligence.
Recommended:
- As long as the dev is dedicated to it
- If you are willing to take the time to get into the basics
Odd Realm is a charming game with beautiful music, with enough depth to excuse pixel art. Would be a good match for any Rimworld fan.
The late game is limited to traveling with your party to another square and starting building from scratch. Other parts are not quite balanced, though this is not a big problem. The game is quite forgiving, especially if you start with Humans and assign individual houses for those with companions. Doing this with the game internal automation is another nice achievement to attain.
Some strategies make other ones obsolete, e.g. cages allow you automatically capture and convert any attacker, this is quite overpowered.
It worth a buy and try, yet it requires tons of flavor to become a genre top pick.
9/5/2024 Edit: After spending more time with the game, I can not recommend it.
Previously it felt like a v0.8 but after diving into the systems more and seeing how many things are missing or just not working it feels more like a v0.4.
The potential is there, it really is, but it's just not ready yet.
**First Impressions on 1.0 release below**
It's fun.
It's Dwarf Fortress Lite.
The on-boarding is pitiful.
It feels like the game is reaching in a bunch of different directions and the systems are only 60%-70% there.
I don't think it should be a 1.0 release. Probably more like a v0.8. The game has been in development for a long time though.
If you like Dwarf Fortress, but it's a bit much for you, then Odd Realm is an easy recommendation.
If you like Dwarf Fortress and you've beat the crap out of it, then Odd Realm will be sorely disappointing.
So, um, the game definitely needs a tutorial, so far I've completely completed the game as far as I concerned. I've built some houses, create some workshops and fields and... that's it, I know there's more content, but I have no idea how to access it, I couldn't find a "Research" button in the UI, maybe I'm blind, but I've looked 3-4 times over. And new stuff isn't unlocked by itself, so I have nothing else to build or create.
The artstyle is cute and the building system is nice, I think there's a lot of stuff you could create with the game if you manage to unlock new content.
I highly recommend for those who want magic and fantasy in their colony sims. This solo-dev Dwarf Fortress-like is a delight to play and has me wishing I discovered it sooner. It has lots of interesting and "odd" mechanics that makes for varied play.
There are tons of options for your initial embarkment just like Dwarf Fortress but with four different factions that play differently. There are RPG leveling mechanics, direct control, job automation, skills, professions, magic, trade, territorial expansion, and destruction of kingdoms-this game feels like it could go very far. The 1.0 release has enough content to *ahem* "dig" into and I'm sure with time it will expand a bit more.
Personally, I love playing games like this without referencing wikis and the like at every turn, as the discovery of mechanics has been part of the fun for me but it could be daunting for those looking for more instruction out of the box. I'm not a hardcore player of colony sims with thousands of hours in each game but I've become enamored with the genre over the past couple of years with a few hundred hours in the free version of Dwarf Fortress and around 150 hrs on the Steam release and maybe 100 hours in Rimworld on console. So it's harder to get into than say Rimworld but less complex than Dwarf Fortress but that's just my impression after my first 30+ hours of play in Odd Realm.
Are you the kind of person who likes the idea of Dwarf Fortress but hates how it's too simplistic and too easy to figure out how to do anything? Give this a try.
Very good game. if you play dwarf fortress or fan of colony sims you will enjoy this. it needs a bit of work but the dev is active on discord and reddit and game does get frequent updates. Pixel Art/Animations 10/10
the updates???
Its a super fun game, Honestly it should be way more known than it is, the only downside is the developer should add more to the toolbox for each item but they're an indie developer so I'm not actually complaining.
Although the interface can be a bit overwhelming at the start, once you adjust, the game has been a fun experience. From figuring out how to get the little dude to do stuff, to finally getting them armored and assigned jobs. The game has been a joy to learn and experience
All I can do is watch them starve to death over and over. Sucks. Days of planning.
Move them on top of the food. No other priorities, no obstructions.
Designate everywhere on the map as some sort of food source.
Every items and room designation they need for that food source.
Actively watching my food total go up.
As all my settlers who can hunt, fish, harvest, forage, and have been told to do so
starve to death.
