I had always sat on this game because I heard a lot about how bland and mid it was. I'm a diehard saga fan but I never really pushed myself to play it properly until just recently.
I absolutely loved Emerald Beyond. So when I started this game I realized this is literally a prototype of Emerald Beyond with a much bigger story.
This game is much longer on story with all sorts of different things to do and a pretty clear emphasis on grinding. The combat is a "lite" version of Emerald Beyond's combat. It's clear they intended for the combat to be the main feature of this game as well but Emerald Beyond is this game's combat polished to perfection.
I think this game works as a good introduction to Emerald Beyond. It's a bit more involved so if you got the time to spend it's worth picking up.
The beauty of Emerald Beyond is how short and neatly packaged it is. Heavy combat, Quick Story. You do a new game+ with improved gear and stats and as a result you get more of the story and more of the crazier combat with each new iteration.
incredibly amazing game definately get
The recommendation comes with the caveat that- as a saga game- this is a deeply unusual game that will take some time to understand. But if you do put in the effort, it's a delightful experience. Coming to understand the world, how everything fits together, discovering the things you can do in each region, and especially exploring the nuances of the incredible battle system, are some of the most fun I've had exploring and discovering in a game. I've only cleared the game with one of the four characters, with only one of the routes through that character's scenario, too!
I have played saga game since game boy console, it has fun but this.....opposite that.
It is hard RPG game and you wanna try to learn many thing in game.
I think it was unbalance game, enemy is so strong
For some backstory, I'm not new to SaGa in general. I am aware of the quirks each entry has, what they take from other games, what they reinvent. This iteration? Perhaps my second-least favorite experience only topped by the awful combat mechanics of the RNG ring system from Unlimited SaGa (if you know, you know).
Presentation and aesthetic were fine, but the flat map traversal and VN style dialogue sequences really showed the minimal effort was made to distinguish the game from a simple "enhanced" phone game port. Music and writing did little to excite me beyond the introduction.
The combat doesn't do a good enough job of onboarding to prevent being steamrolled by seemingly random chance mechanics even early on during what I'd consider the "tutorial" phase of the game. It isn't challenging, it's unnecessarily punishing.
I wish I had refunded it when I started to notice I didn't vibe with the game, but alas I put it down to come back a few days later, thinking I'd have a change of heart starting over and taking all my knowledge from a couple of hours of playing into a fresh save... when the technical issues struck. I should have also immediately refunded then; maybe buy it on a different sale after some patching. I thought I would be safe -- Square-Enix isn't exactly known for their quality and polished PC releases, after all! but sometimes they fix it after a while -- but it seems I didn't get so lucky.
But, stubbornly, I attempted to delete everything about the game from my system, reinstall from scratch, and muck around with various settings to try and fix the stuttering audio, frame pacing, and general controller trouble I had while starting a new game, and I just couldn't get it to perform passably, much less as good as it did the first day. Not sure if they've put in any updates after the past couple of years, but Buyer Beware anyway.
Can't recommend it as a passable entry to SaGa as a franchise; even less so as someone's first title.
I got this at 70% off last year and boy oh boy did I get my money's worth. One of the best turn-based combat systems I've ever experienced in gaming, and amazing art and music. Starting out, I struggled, much as anyone would struggle in SaGa games on a first playthrough, but once I got the hang of it, I fell utterly in love with it. I did take breaks between playthroughs with each character, and I recommend any prospect players to do so, as this is a game originally designed for a handheld and therefore, best suited for short burst sessions as opposed to long, drawn-out hours of gameplay.
I love the attention to detail and the flavor of each playthrough being changed by something as simple as the window borders each protagonist gets, and that they all have distinct and memorable world map and battle themes. I absolutely love this game, as a huge fan of SaGa it has definitely become top 3 for me. I dislike the fact that skill levels reset every new run, I like accumulating power overtime and becoming OP in games, specially when they have NG+, which reminds me, while I do get what they were going for with the mechanics for NG+ here, I didn't like being forced to finish 4 full runs with all the protagonists to be able to carry over materials and equipment, and I wish the game stopped prompting you to absorb flux with mages that already maxed out all their spells.
I do wish certain characters were more fleshed out, but I do like the story and setting a lot, as it has a very unique flavor to it I haven't seen anywhere else.
Future players: If you are interested in the story at all, this game has an opening that tells you a lot of background that isn't explained in the game, but for the PC version specifically it isn't played in the game but instead stored at a file in the install folder.
