Portrait Wizard is a tool you use to puzzle together a portrait with a wide selection of highquality parts, to create hand-drawn like portraits.
You will be able to manipulate the parts in various ways, so the variations are endless.
Color, size(also x/y), brightness, angle, and more can be changed, depending on the part.
For who is this software?
-It is a great tool for Indie Devs who need royalty free portraits for their games.
-Or as a tool for concepting characters before you deal with other artists.
-A tool for artists, who want to experiment with different character styles.
-For roleplayers and people who like to add their own portraits into games to enhance their gaming experience.
..or just for fun..
Portrait Wizard runs in Windows in a window at 1280 x 960, so make sure your screen has high enough resolution to run it.
The portrait is saved as a 830 x 957 Bitmap file(BMP), and can be cut and resized with the cutting tool included in the software(or with any external image editing program such as Photoshop or Clip Studio).
In addition to the picture file, the portrait is now also saved in an ini file, which can be loaded into the software, so that you can continue working on your portraits at a later time.
After the launch I will still work on the project, add more material and improve on existing assets.
Thank you for checking this out!

I've used this app to create three characters so far, and generally found it to be an easygoing experience. Development seems to mostly be in maintenance mode with only a few updates (last one in late October 2019). Developer is active within the discussion forum and seems to respond to problems quite quickly.
Pros:
+ One of the few pieces of software to actually do this
# The dev could link up with other artists to implement their bases
+ Price is fair, when considering number of features compared to a base
+ Easy to transfer projects to other users (.ini files)
+ Actually able to use this for commercial projects! (Not for me, but still nice)
+ Possible to implement custom assets, but...
Cons:
- No Workshop support for user-generated assets
- Limited to one asset per layer
- Can have different left/right eyes, but only certain features
- Some assets, such as the mouth veil, could totally go with other "masks"
- A few assets - notably mouths - are low fairly quality
- The UI is VERY cumbersome.
- Auto-exported only as .bmp
- No easy link to the image & file directory
- Resolution hides bottom ~15% of images, requiring saving to see most clothes
Overall, I feel like my purchase was worth it. I know I'll probably keep using it to finalize my character ideas and get that first image out. If I decide to take it further, this will serve as a basis for a commissioned artist. $20 is pretty steep for what I use it for, but with few other options, I'll take it.
That said, I would really hope that the dev implements Workshop support. Put up a few of the current assets as a tutorial, create a small handful of assets unique to the Workshop as a new update, and/or commission someone to add a few new features! My fingers are crossed...
Portrait Wizard is a really useful and diverse program to help create a variety of avatars for any purpose - want to make yourself as a cartoon? Want to get an image for your D&D character? Want to just mess around with faces? Portrait Wizard is great for that!
I love the ability to change the skin colours and positions of facial features, so my character's eyes can be wide open or mostly closed, up in the head or down by the chin! It can make for some fun shenanigans, but ultimately - You can make many difference faces with the vast asset library of face, eye and nose shapes, as well as hairstyles and clothing.
It is not without it's fault and glitches - I get around these by manually editing them, but there is an ongoing support thread for bug reports which seems the developer is active upon, so hopefully by the time you've read this review, repairs are done and everything works as well as can be!
Honestly hours of fun, and a great way to get a quick face for a character or person that you want to pop up in a game or online. With a very lax licence for both personal and commercial use, Portrait Wizard is now my go-to software for any time I need to create a face.
I like this. I make most of my character portraits with this tool.
Generally I can get 90% of what I want, and then use GIMP or photoshop for the other 10%.
It's worth the coin.
The bottom is cut off and I can't see the bottom of the face, it's very distracting and I haven't been able to make a character
Nice piece of software that helps to visualise appearances you have in mind. Dev is open to requests for extra features/improvements, adding items and other things on request. Time is as always an issue, but I mean, making the assets and that are time consuming and life is what it is.
No needs to rush and it's all good.
Happy with the purchase and happy with the versatility.
I haven't used this very much yet as you can tell but I thought it necessary to mention it works great on Ubuntu under Proton.
Excellent little piece of software to help create high quality characters with a unique and very cool (subjective, I know) art style.
The uses for this are limitless but I'll be using it for the computer role playing game I'm creating and for making NPCs for the tabletop game I run.
Good stuff and well worth the price- especially on sale. $15.00 is a steal.
I like this: if you're not an artist yourself, or like me, not good at this kind of art, but you like making your own character portraits for games, it does the job nicely. It's got a unique style, and if you dig the style, you'll dig the software. Thumbs up from me!
Truly awesome software, I really recommend it! I will use it to create portraits for characters in my RPG Maker MV game. I created a lengthy video on it and presented in it:
<> how to create a portrait from scratch;
<> features and perks of the software;
<> how to add dem portraits into RPG Maker MV game project (not within the text window pictures, since I won't be using these that way).
Video can be found at the following link, and has in the descriptions most of the ideas covered in the video (since its kind of lengthy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEzUuwdHr98
This is a bit of an interesting option. I think it is a great starting point and it has a great amount of potential. However, I feel it is a bit overpriced as is. Considering it is nearly impossible to do any portraits of humanoids who have more animalistic faces (lizardfolk, dragonborn, ect) and that the color settings of things like skin and hair don't accurately match the brows and hands when used (the copy the base CYM but not the brightness or saturation) I would say unless you are really lazy and don't mind working through a few bugs and things, wait for this to be closer to $10/$15 or just use any number of online portrate makers for the one or two portraits you will likely need.
I'm jumping the gun and leaving a review even though I've only used this program for about an hour and a half. I'll edit this review at a later date if I need to but I highly recommend this program. The number of choices are astonishing and you can make just about anything that you can think of. The sky is the limit as your options are particularly in-depth and it's nearly an art program in and of itself with all of them that are available.
What really sold me on this review, though, was that my girlfriend and I spent some time messing around and creating a pair of characters on it. We found only a couple of aspects missing that we would have liked to have had available and I posted on the forum shortly thereafter as a request. Within a couple of days, not only did the program get updated with the request but it was updated with several variations of it.
Great program, even better developer. I really see this going the distance (and more) as long as the developer keeps their head in the game and listens to their customer base as amazingly well as they have up to this point.
Got this on a sale and almost regret not getting it for full price - the developer is clearly putting a lot of effort into the software with new items being added on a regular basis. There's also not many restrictions to what you can do with what you create in the software, as a commercial license is included. Awesome!
If you are a game developer and in need of portraits this is a fantasitc bit of software. As of right now it has enough options to make a bunch of portraits for nearly any fantasy setting. It is a very nice tool and will save you tons of time from having to draw and create everything by hand. Pick it up, you will not be sad you did.
The developer is also currently updating the software making it better on a regular basis.
To tell you how easy it is to make something cool, my 6 year old made an awesome fire mage and has it hanging on her wall in her room.
A Very Nice Program!
While it has a few minor things that could better, like the ability to resize all the items etc. It is a GREAT start to a helpful fun graphics tool. It is easy to use, produces some very nice results and still maintains a little bit of uniqueness to what you produce. I love to support independent products and this one really deserves it! . Overall 4 out of 5 stars right now as it is. When they add in more content and tweak the interface just a bit it will be an easy 5 out of 5 stars.
1280 x 960 screen is needed
If you do not have a 1280 x 960 you may run into some slight problems.
Portrait wizard is amazing for putting a face to a charater you make. It is great for the people that do RPG like d&d or pathfinder for getting a cool looking picture of what your charater might look like.
I give this program an 8/10 as of now. Once more updates come out I am sure it will get a 10/10
Pros
Makes amazing looking Portraits for any type of charater
Easy to learn (like in 30sec)
Fast loading/Saving
can work on Multiple charaters
lots of details
Cons
Interface could use some work
1280 x 960 screen is need
this game is still in alpha/beta and it's already really fun.
the developer is a real cool guy who listens to user feedback, suggestions and requests a lot. also he's just ONE GUY and he's doing the programming and the artwork.
there's a feature where you can import your own assets if you're an artist too.
right now due to being in alpha-beta status it's still missing a lot of features, but when this app is complete it's going to be a really awesome avatar maker, ESPECIALLY if the dev adds workshop support which iirc he said he might try and do.
highly recommend it if you can afford it and just keep in mind it's a WIP unfinished product. despite that, i've already gotten my money's worth : )
Nice ideea, nice program. You can get many many combinations of characters.
The developer is very active and the program is updated often.
What I think it might be a nice addition is workshop and maybe some more realistic portrait images.
A definite yes on this. I am writing a huge fantasy epic and as a very visual person, I need to "see" my characters. Usually I scour the internet for hours collecting interesting faces and save them for characters and even future characters, but even then, sometimes I just can't find exactly what I'm looking for. That is what i use Portrait Wizard for. You can see by my hours spent in the program I am definitely getting my money's worth. It is fun, the characters look great, and the developer is active and updating almost every day and listens to suggestions. When it's completely finished this is going to be a very powerful tool for avatar and character creation. So, yes, if you're looking for an easy to use RPG, avatar, whatever, character image maker, this is it.
I'm liking this product loads. I was after creating some retro assets, and the pixilization function makes it great for pixel portraits. It does need more facial features adding, but as it's early access and updated frequently I don't imagine this would be a problem.
10/10 Would use to pretend I have artistic talent again.
Sad that I had to refund this as I didn't read the system requirements properly amd found my laptop screen resolution was simply too small.
Aside from this, the software itself is fantastic, the artwork is beautifully hand drawn in the best quality you could hope for.
I loved the level of customization for different features such as changing the size of eyes, mouth, nose etc and there is more than enough assets to get you started despite till being in early access. If that wasn't enough there are also a wide range of stunning backgrounds to choose from and different lighting effects.
I'm not sure if there is an undo button as I couldn't see the entire UI lol but that would definitely be useful.
Overall this is a great software and very affordable for what it offers!
