The Hero Unmasked is a 300,000 word interactive novel by Christopher Huang. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
As our story begins, you have everything you've ever wanted. Your TV news show is the highest rated in the city, and you're engaged to the mayor, with two weeks until the wedding. But when superpowered criminals kidnap the Swashbuckler, you realize the awful truth: the person in the ransom video is your identical twin, and everyone thinks it's you!
Now, you must draw the Swashbuckler's laser sword and wear the Swashbuckler's mask to bring down three of the city's most wanted super criminals before time runs out.
How is this going to work? Can you keep up the charade? Do you want to? When you meet the Swashbuckler's sweetheart, will you remain faithful? To whom?!

I enjoyed reading through this game for the most part, but I didn’t like that there were many situations where your skills could not be put to use, no matter the stats you’ve invested in, and would, as such, lead to failures. But the interesting romances and setting more than made up for it, and I found myself replaying parts of the game many times until I got the ending I wanted, and I had a lot of fun. (6/10)

Wonderful game. Your choices really do affect the story even to the point of who the ending villain is! It's nice to see how much the story is shaped by choices via the dialogue and relationships. Action is your run-of-mill text game kind where you are better off just sticking to what attributes you have that are best if you want to succeed. Example: If you aren't speedy, don't go for something that requires speed to pull off. That said, if you mess up enough... there's achievements for that! Which IMO is hilarious. Recommend! :D
It was a lot of fun, laughed a lot, I enjoyed. For the first time, I didn't mind failing some stat checks, I usually restart until I get the desired outcome but I was OK with the outcome here, didn't feel punishing.
Other characters' personalities change a bit depending on your choices (for example, if you cheat on your future spouse, they're a cheater too, but if you're faithful - so are they).
I've only played it twice so far, I still have a lot of routes to try and achievements to do.

The Hero Unmasked! asks the player exactly these questions.
You play as the host of the city's highest rated TV show and are just weeks away from marrying none other than the mayor when disaster strikes. It's all over the news:
You've been kidnapped.
But... you are right here and very much not-kidnapped. There's just one, very horrifying explanation:
The person in the ransom video is your identical twin. Worse yet, there's a great chance they are the city's very own masked vigilante: The Swashbuckler.
If you want to save your twin before the kidnappers find out that they do not have you, but the Swashbuckler in their clutches, and might act accordingly (aka likely killing your twin), the only chance you have is to take up the mask and cape yourself, find and rescue your twin, discover how they got kidnapped... and all of that before the wedding.
The plot, world and characters are wonderfully crafted, and with a lot of Aha!- and Oh!-moments. Every new play-through can easily provide information and scenes not witnessed in one before, like the backstories of the NPCs, villains included.
Thus, one of the best (superhero) stories in the library, great replay value.
Another awesome story! Right off the bat, the negative thing I have to say about this title is that it was shorter than I would've liked. But I really felt like I got a good connection to the characters, and nothing was overly complicated. It was an overall fun story that was interesting to read through. I would strongly suggest giving this a readthrough. I give this a 9/10.
I can't say that it was anything special or unique, but it was a good enough game to keep me entertained for a couple hours.
Don't be alarmed by the number of hours. I enjoy "Hero Unmasked" so much I re-play it occasionally. It may be my favorite CYOA game on Steam. The length is perfect: not short enough to feel rushed and not too long so it feels like a slog to get through. Unlike many CYOA games the choices are well written so you know which one fits what you want to do. The game comes with a built-in romance (the Mayor) which you can set the intensity of, or ignore completely if you wish. To be honest, I haven't tried any other path but the "we are very much in love" tone for the Mayor romance because it is so satisfying through the story. Your mileage may vary, if you choose something else. Hint: If you want a HAPPY ending in Mayor romance, DO NOT talk to the Mayor at the Society Garden Party. Recommended if you like this kind of stuff.
Pros:
-customizing your hero's morals and abilities
-really appreciated that most abilities will improve over time, too many CYOA stories shift your abilities wildly after each choice.
-unravelling the mystery
-choosing between what you want to do and what you need to do to keep your identity a secret.
-good romance options
-interesting achievements
Cons:
-I found some of the dialogue, especially near the end, pretty cheesy and forced.
-There are moments were you get out of a situation, because of your high ability score. BUT the explainations are kinda lazy and not entertaining.
Overall:
-It had some good ideas and was fun at times, but there was never any gut punches that really drew me into the story. Some choices I expected the writing to be better. You keep waiting for these moments to pop up, but they really let you down. I'd only recommend getting it if you're really into superheros and it's on sale.
I wouldn't necessarily not recommend this title its a perfectly fine COG product, but something just didn't click for me with this story. It's a pretty good length and its a nice spin to the typical superhero storyline that gets churned out where you're forced to become a hero rather than training your whole life to be one. However, I just couldn't connect to the characters at all. I know it's vital for the plot that you're set to marry the mayor in two weeks, but I don't like being forced into having Fallout 4 type beginning where I have to be close to a character I know nothing about and expect to feel something for them when they're in trouble. Sure, you get to develop that relationship further down the road if you really want to, but it doesn't seem as organic to me as having a clean slate approach to romance would feel. Also some characters just don't seem that interesting I don't feel a strong urge to get to know many of them. I didn't really like the lack of chilldhood flashbacks to your life with your twin either. I know they're family so you're supposed to feel some sort of connection to them automatically, but I found it hard to even care about my twin because all you get is one flashback that barely shares anything besides that your parents split you up and that you're both talented and introduces a later character. The ending felt a bit rushed and I was able to predict who the big bad was going to be way before the story neared it's end. For 7 dollars I just expected it to be better compared to some cheaper titles I've played from the series that are not only longer, but more attention-grabbing and more interesting.
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to see the sequel to this story :p
One of the blockbuster CYOA : a lot of action separated bewteen multiple chapter well written with intense narration and brilliantly delimited. The format want to mimick an episodic one.
The romantic choices seems a little forced. One thing I did'nt approved was that one element of the story change based on your choices but it's just not really logical. The stats system appear clumsy and it's not always clear as to what does what.
Now on the bright side of things the supporting cast characters are all very lively and charismatic. Each action scene is rather epic but the ending seems a little rushed.
All in all a very solid title with dynamic stories and a very good cast of character. Typical flaws of an action based choose your own adventure title.
When it comes to Super Hero stories you often feel that youve seen or read it all, well I'm here to tell you that you would be wrong! This is a well crafted, well written and charecterised tale with a well executed premise.
Naturally, as with all the "Choice" games you are given the ability ot craft the charecter's deicisions to your hearts content... So naturally I tried to seduce everything that moved for the sake of anarchy; a decision that eventuated with.... *ehem* interesting results shall we say. >.>
I often find "Choice" games to be hit or miss but this is certainly a hit; with a quality of writting that is reminisant of The Heroes Rise games; if not just in theme but quality as well.
If you like CYOA games AND have the patience to read something for once in your life, then get this game lol
I really liked the story and the characters but if I were to compare this to other super hero CYOA games like the Heroes Rise series, then it's just as good. I'd like to see some sort of sequel to this story if possible.
Some people might not like these type of games because it's all text and there's no "graphics" involved. But you give these types of games a chance then you won't be disappointed. Let your imagination run wild with the choices you make in game.
Well, at first I'm annoyed that it's another super hero themed one, since it gets old fast, but I'm pleasantly surprised that it's actually pretty good. your actions have consequences on the ending that you can't predict without playing through the story once, and different stats actually do different things without one being more important than the other. and although it's light on the relationship side, I'd still recommend it for pretty much anyone.
