Supermarket Tycoon is, well, barely qualifying as a tycoon game. It's an abandoned early access train wreck that looks more like someone's homework project (they failed the course, and in fact was held back a year after they submitted this for their assignment). It's really so bad, and not just because of the crap technical implementation (more on that later). The fundamental game design here is terrible... you have to manually click on each stock item you buy then click where to put it... it's a joke, it's so lazily put together. Trying to play this game seriously may cause mental harm, so please be careful. That's how bad this shovelware is.
The game was abandoned roughly 2 months after launch and hasn't been updated in over 5 years. It blew past the developers commitment to complete the game without any notification or admission of failure from the developer. The game will never be completed.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it.
The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 11 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Unethically, the developer sold keys to this abandoned Early Access game into cheap, nasty game bundles, where they knew it would be advertised and sold as a complete PC game. This seems to have been done in an attempt to mislead gamers into buying a knowingly faulty, defective and incomplete product. When a developer does this for a game they have zero practical intention of completing, this is essentially a scam, an intention to get paid for a broken/unfinished product. Often this is done as an exit strategy, as the developer takes the money and runs. No refunds have been given, the developer kept all the money they took from gamers.
Another unethical act of this developer, knowing full well that this game is abandoned and they will never complete it, they are deliberately trying to scam gamers into buying it by offering it on discount from time to time. It's impossible to "accidentally" discount a game. The developer looked at their abandoned game, and instead of doing the right thing and removing it from Steam, they instead doubled-down and tried to scam even more people into paying for it. Greedy, and completely unethical. Doing the wrong thing, on purpose, for money. This is not okay.
Supermarket Tycoon is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer, this is impossible to recommend.
Even for 50 cents, it's barely worth it. It's fun for 30 seconds as you try to figure out what you can do, and then immediately boring. However, if you're obsessed with tycoon style games, then it wouldn't hurt to pick it up.

Someone abandoned a project they started in their college game design class.
It has a good idea but needs much improvement. Add workers to stack shelves of goods and also suggesting more products and better artwork (e.g. fixing the log called Candy Bar) and making the cashier not next to the doors will help with the never ending lines of people. Add a limit to the size of the store as you can make it infinite and allow more types of shelving. Great idea, would be amazing game but needs some improvement. Updates say its still in early access which means this could happen soon

I bought this in 2017? What is happening? Not fair to take your money, release no updates, release an unplayable game and not keep buyers of this game informed on developments. I can only assume the full game will be released next because if i only get a tiny update after all this time i will request a full refund.

Do not buy this game if your expectations are high.
It is acceptionably functional, most of the time. There are constant bugs, such as the customers walking in the same place, unable to go to checkout, or items not getting placed on shelves. The developer just has simply not put enough time and effort into this game. This game has lots of potential, just only if it was more developed. I got it for around $2. If you pay $5+, then it's not worth your money.
TLDR:
Don't buy the game unless you're really bored and have an extra $5 to waste.
really fun game but it isn't out yet so the're a lot of bugs, like customers are stuck and other things like that.
Not so good, its buggy and you can delt your savegame so easy and then you must begin a new game bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

i really like tycoon games, and im really hoping they update it in the future, right now the game is in a basic state but thats ok its in early access. Good luck devs im gonna keep my eye out for updates.
when I try to delete an item it rarely ever allows me to delete anything I don't want but apart from that I really like the game and ope it gets better in the future! 7/10
It´s a nice little game, which just needs time, and love. I like the idea behind it. This game need some updates and bug fixes, maybe it´s better to buy it in a couple weeks when most bugs have been fixed. Hoping for new content, ill stay tuned for it, this game has a lot of potential! :)
DO NOT BUY
I can't advise you to avoid this game enough. This basically a hobbyproject that anyone with a passing knowledge in programming can slap together in less than a day.
Here is a list of things that I noticed in my less than 10 minutes of "playing":
*It "only" runs at 150FPS on my rig, which usually does 200FPS for BF1 or similar titles on high graphical settings
*Very high volume on launch
*No options in-game, so you can't even turn the damn "music" off.
*Repetetive soundtrack that assaults your ears constantly
*Not even a "Quit"-button in the menu
*Boring, bland, and downright terrible graphics, wouldn't be a problem if the gameplay worked, but..
*Gameplay barely work because of shoddy programming and just bad design
*The AI is dumber than anything I've ever come across, it keeps flooding your store even though you have nothing to sell (dev patched as of 31/8, AI is still stupid though, and it keeps walking into itself and clogging up the whole store)
*There is for some godforsaken reason latency between buttonpresses in this single player only title, HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?!
The "developer" seems extremely incompetent for unleashing this on Steam in such a state so I wouldn't hold my breath for these problems to get fixed either. Even more problems would probably come to light if I stayed with it for the rest of the 2 hours before I refund it, but there is no way I'm putting myself through that hell.
The game Itself is very stable and very good. It's very basic at the moment. It is alot like market tycoon but unlike market tycoon you are able to expand the market. I have not seen any gamebreaking bugs or crashes have any kind.
The layout is very good. If you like playing tycoon games then this is for you I highly recommend that you buy It because you will love It. Don't listen to the critic on here who doesn't like It because he's not a true tycoon fan. He's only trying to take away sales from this guy.
