Commandos 2: Men of Courage is, in my opinion, the best installment in this franchise. Again, it's a game based on WW2 where you manage a small unit of elite soldiers called the Commandos with the mission to stop the advance of both Germans and now Japanese Axis Forces.
Now, everything the past games did right, this one makes it even better, not only it does add new abilities, new weapons and more variety, it also adds a new Commando (and a dog!). It's graphics has also been overly improved while keeping the isometric view we're used to from the previous games. The best part of this game is, without a doubt the fact that there are now missions that are indoors and you can get in and out of buildings as you please, either by using a door or, with the right Commando (Green Beret/Thief), a window. There are now containers and safes, that can either be locked or unlocked and have a wide array of useful items, from food, to medkits, key items or even weapons.
The soundtrack, still composed by the very talented Mateo Pascual, is even better and much more prominent in game, as the missions themselves now have music playing in the background and it even changes whenever you're indoors or outdoors.
All the old mechanics from the previous games are back and they've been improved upon. Almost every Commando is now able to punch enemies and wield a different array of weapons, from Rifles, to Submachineguns and even German and Japanese Pistols, which the latter is honestly its situational but can be helpful. With these changes you're no longer tied to a specific array of weapons for each commando, and while only some can use certain types of weapons and equipment (the Green Beret still has his iconic Decoy and the Sapper is still the only one able to handle explosives), this gives the more vulnerable commandos such as the Sniper a better shot (no pun intended) at surviving when their main weapon runs out.
Also, long gone are the days where the Driver was the main Team Medic, as now everyone can grab and use Medkits as well as food to heal themselves up, this, also means that healing is now tied to how many of those items are in each respective level rather than a fixed amount. There are some levels where you do have a medkit right away, for example the very first mission "The Night of the Wolves" has the Thief spawn with one and the final mission "Is Paris Burning?" has the Spy have one, but again, anyone can hold and use it.
Speaking of missions, there are a total of 10 base missions, which might be a bit dissapointing, until you realise there are also a bunch of training and bonus missions, where, in total, you play with almost everyone but Natasha and Whiskey (the dog i mentioned earlier). In total there are 2 Training missions, 10 main missions and 9 bonus missions plus one which is not normally available and plays right after "Saving Private Smith" (22 total). The training missions are very effective in introducing old features to new players but at the same time, the new ones, such as the new commando (Thief) and, for example, the Sapper's Minesweeper.
Both the Green Beret and the Diver can now throw their knives to slain enemies from the distance.
The Sapper has now access to landmines, anti-tank mines and a Minesweeper to detect and disable enemy mines and can help the Driver to set booby traps to trap and kill enemy soldiers.
The Driver is now able to use various kinds of gas grenades as well as molotov cocktails, giving him a greater shot at ambushing and killing enemies. He's also equiped with a shovel that can be useful sometimes.
The Spy's uniform changing abilities have been yet again improved and he can do much more than just distract enemies but, with the right uniform, order them to move, helping to clear out the way in case another one of our Commandos has to go through.
And so on... There are so many changes, i wouldn't be able to list all of them here.
This game introduces a new Commando plus a Dog:
The Thief (Paul Toledo) is the newest addition to the Commandos lineup and has taken the title as the quickest, most athletic and stealthiest commando, being able to climb walls, hide, slide through poles, swing on wires, enter through windows, among other abilities. He is also a very capable lockpicker, being able to open most boxes, containers and safes quickly and unnoticed. While he's very small in size, he can quickly knock out enemies using his martial arts abilities. He, however, is the only commando that normally does not wield a pistol, being forced to rely on enemy weaponry to kill.
The Dog (Whiskey) is the team dog. Originally property of a dying man, after his passing he was taken by the Commandos and trained to carry items and send them to other members, sniffiing out mines, as well as using his barking to distract soldiers. Normally, enemies won't target him unless he with a Commando. He cannot stray too far away or will not obey the player. He can be recalled using a high-pitched whistle.
Every mission once again is very different from the other and ranges from indoors to outdoors, from land to sea, to the warm summer to the cold winter., from Germany to Japan and Burma. There's a lot going on this game. My personal favorites are "Das Boot, Silent Killers", "Bridge over the River Kwai" and "Is Paris Burning?". I really enjoy this game a lot and i must say i would really recommend it to anyone starting out with this franchise or who loves sneaky strategy as a whole.
Score: 9/10
Its a really well thought real time strategy game that prioritzes stealth and planning rather than going in guns and blazing. Most of the games that have stealth feels like stealth was only implemented to the game and the gameplay was based on the guns and blazing approach, this masterpiece is diffrent where stealth and planning can be the diffrence between fighting the soldiers that infest the streets of Paris to almost killing no-one. This game is a must for stealth and tactical game enjoyers alike.
The game of my childhood PC gaming. The stealth operations are really well made and fun, the mechanics are easy to pick up, and the characters are all uniquely interesting. Bias aside, I find that his game holds up really well in today's standards. Would 100% recommend 10/10
Nice simple game, gets easier once you memorise key strokes, havent played this since 2002, brings back memories
Special game really, to run it smoothly run the legacy version.
For nostalgia reasons I still recommend it.
But: You can't switch the language. Altough I'm german, I do play games in english since german translations often lack the atmosphere. Before I bought it on Steam, I checked the supported languages => it says german and english, but if you have a german account, you get a german-only version. Searching the internet, this seems to apply to various countries, that you only get "your" native language installer 🫤
Interesting game would reccomend
Works perfectly fine on Linux Mint. If you want to experience the game as you remembered it, dump M$ and install a small Linux partition/drive. It might be an old rig, but runs great when not burdened with junk.
i7-7700K
64GB DDR3

Proton 9.0.4.
I can't play because Commandos 2: Men of Courage won't work properly on Windows 11. That's bad.

What can I say, it's definitely one of the greatest games of all time.
NOTE: Just a little bit of tricky to be able to run it on a Windows 11 machine. You might need this application "DxWnd" to solve the problem. Link: https://sourceforge.net/p/dxwnd/home/Home/
A timeless classic, still captivating after multiple playthroughs. The ultimate Real-Time Tactics experience.
I like the way it's designed! It's nostalgic!
Great follow up to the original classic.
Never really liked the implementation of the backpack inventory system, though.
Commandos 2 MoC is the superior game, by far. It has a decent run of 22 missions - including training missions to help you get used to the controls and bonus missions if you've put the effort in to explore each campaign mission map.
If you are planning to buy these 2 games: Commandos 2: Men of Courage & Commandos 3: Destination Berlin, I have some advice for you. If you buy it as a memory of your childhood, it is okay. This game is also my childhood. But if you buy it to play, you should consider carefully because you will encounter some problems if your computer is using Windows 10/11.
You may buy this game (I bought the package of 4) only for nostalgia. I forgot how disastrous this game(s) is. It's very grindy and tedious, but the map design and the painting is awesome. Don't even bother killing 50 soldiers one by one in a tedious way. I know this game is old and in old days it was good. Go watch it on Youtube I guess or go look at its maps on wiki websites.
Technically, the game still has all those glitchy main menu transitions (seizure warning for glitchy resolution changes and slow down, it's like the main menu is made by an entirely separate developing tool, like main menu is made by blender and game by unity) just like the original games and as far as my memory helps, it has original glitches of the games such as enemy soldiers get stuck in chairs and become unselectable.
Also I remembered how bad Commandos 2 was on early levels to the point that when I was a kid, I got so disappointed in the first levels that I never even bothered continue playing. The first level is a tedious stealth level and the tutorials are horrible. Commandos 1 is more straightforward than 2. Good luck understanding that you need to add pills to the crate's bottle crate (unless you search online).
when i had windows 10 on my PC it would run no problem .now updated to windows 11 it will not run even using all the fixes provided by the community to run. whats a waste i cannot play one of my favorite games again
"Commandos 2: Men of Courage" is the most addiction Real-Time Tactics around all the Commandos series.
One of the Best game ever.
As a classic game? DEFINETELY YES!!! Play this old one, not the remastered one!
