i am having a hard time of finding the fun inside the game. i find it often boring and tedious, it feels more like work than playing. the gameplay feels unrewarding. units feel unresponsive. firefights are taking very long, especially when units are in cover.
they invented some mechanics i've not seen in other rts games like directional alignment of units and vulnerable backs of tanks and so on but this alone makes no great game.
This is my comprehensive review about Company of Heroes:
For a game released in 2006 I was quite impressed with the overall experience. The game is easy to understand but hard to master, not to a degree of frustration but to a fair and rewarding experience. For example: Exposing the rear armor of your vehicle to an AT gun or another vehicle means it will be toast and that would be your own miss micromanagement. Cover, attacking all works flawlessly. And so do the territory style of gameplay. I was always a fan of the history behind both WW and seeing an RTS exploring this concept in such a magnificent way was something I was craving for. Mod support and community support has been amazing so far. Relic went as far as breaking the 3rd wall, offering you not only Allied focused related campaigns but also Axis related campaigns. When many WWII games only focuses on the Allied side of things, Relic gets spectactularly away with some good storytelling about the Axis side of things and what these soldiers might have thought about the war with the Allies. I got this game on sale but what is there to say? Sale or not it is highly recommended for anyone craving both a new RTS and a WWII focused game. It is simply amazing.
This game makes you feel like a tactical genius right up until your squad walks into an ambush and gets obliterated in two seconds. You’ll carefully position your troops, plan the perfect attack… and then a random tank rolls in and crushes both your strategy and your soul.
I've thoroughly enjoyed this game for many years now. One of the best RTS games to date... frustrating, intense, and ridiculously fun.
I will rate this one at a 8/10.
The premier WWII experience for me, the vanilla game and campaign itself is spectacular, and the cherry on top is that there are also fan-made, historically accurate mods that enhances that experience even more, (shout-out to Battle of the Bulge, Immersion 1944!), in spite of its age, this game is worth every penny and a legend of the RTS genre.
The interface is very difficult to control, it does not respond readily to mouse clicks, it does not select units readily, the mini-map view window tends to jump to places not selected by the player, FOR NO REASON AT ALL!
In addition the Relic Online servers are never online.
why its showing company of heroes tales of valor its not company of heroes 1 please fix this problem as i purchase complete pack and its showing tales of valor please fix it as soon as you can
Best game for all times since 2009s, even better then COH2 AND COH3. amazing sounds effects and amazing graphice that mack you unable to belive that this game was made at 2006s ! what a great game and what a great proffesional group who made this game.
yadesh bekheyr to game net ino play midadim . lan mizadim o eshgh hali bood :)
best...
even thow this game can sware its a good game so far
Best RTS I have played years ago, still come back for this one... really enjoyed this one still play this one rather and COH 2 totally recommend for all.
The original game has the best look and feel of the entire franchise, but the AI is dumber than a bag of bricks. Understandable though that may be, it does make the gameplay a bit too predictable and all you have to do is wait for the rewards to tick in and then steamroll over your opponent.
Needless to say, playing a human opponent is still as great as ever and you can always setup an insane comp stomp in Hochwald Gap if you feel like setting up your MGs and wait for the computer to come get stuffed.
🔥 WWII Strategy at Its Finest. Realistic, Intense, and Unforgettable! 🔥
Company of Heroes isn’t just another real-time strategy game. It is a genre-defining WWII experience that blends tactical depth, cinematic battles, and environmental destruction in a way few games have ever matched. Released in 2006 by Relic Entertainment, this game set a new standard for RTS titles with its dynamic battlefields, squad-based tactics, and gripping campaign.
Gameplay and Strategy (9.5/10)
✔️ Squad-based combat with intelligent AI and tactical depth
✔️ Dynamic cover system where units automatically take cover and react to the environment
✔️ Resource control mechanics reward aggressive and strategic play
✔️ Fully destructible environments change the battlefield in real-time
✔️ A D-Day-inspired campaign with emotionally engaging missions
Instead of traditional RTS base-building, Company of Heroes focuses on capturing strategic points for resources, forcing players to adapt and think strategically rather than just amass units. Battles feel brutal, realistic, and deeply immersive, making each engagement a test of wits and tactical execution.
Graphics and Sound (9/10)
✔️ Visually stunning for its time, with detailed environments and unit animations
✔️ Explosions, gunfire, and ambient sounds bring the battlefield to life
✔️ Powerful orchestral soundtrack enhances the intensity
For a 2006 game, Company of Heroes still looks amazing thanks to Relic’s Essence Engine, which delivers cinematic visuals and realistic physics. Watching buildings collapse from artillery fire and soldiers scramble for cover adds an extra layer of immersion.
Multiplayer and Replayability (9/10)
✔️ Balanced and intense online multiplayer with competitive rankings
✔️ Diverse factions with unique playstyles and unit compositions
✔️ Active modding community with fan-made campaigns and balance updates
The multiplayer is where the game truly shines, offering tactical 1v1 duels or large-scale battles with friends. The variety in factions, strategies, and terrain-based combat ensures no two matches feel the same.
Final Verdict: 9.5/10
Company of Heroes remains one of the best RTS games ever made, delivering intense WWII battles, strategic depth, and an immersive single-player campaign. Whether you’re a longtime strategy fan or new to the genre, this game is an absolute must-play.
Pros:
✅ Tactical squad-based combat that rewards smart positioning
✅ Realistic physics and destructible environments
✅ Engaging single-player campaign and deep multiplayer
✅ Great faction diversity and strategic depth
Cons:
❌ Steep learning curve for new players
❌ Some AI pathfinding issues in tight areas
❌ Original servers shut down, but community fixes exist
🔥 Verdict. If you love strategy games with a mix of realism, tactics, and cinematic battles, Company of Heroes is a masterpiece you shouldn’t miss! 🔥
This was my first RTS game, and is the game I compare other RTS games to. Company of Heroes is the gold standard of the genre.
Brilliant game with a higher than average risk of crashing in the most unfortunate moment.
What can I say this is just the best and simple RTS WWII game it may be old but boy is it better than its sequels if you think having fun with the original is already fun try mods and you'll probably have an aneurysm from the enjoyment that a single game can have so many different play styles by using different mods, well that's Company of Heroes for you, the game is easy if you want it to and extremely challenging if you are more of a masochist other than that its really fun.
The campaign itself is really well done it slowly helps you understand strategy even if you aren't an RTS enthusiast and that's a good thing not gonna lie cause these days most people want harder and complex RTS games without even considering that there are people out there that might get overwhelm by too much sh8t to do, in this game? Not so much. Either way I really recommend this game for new RTS players and simple Gamers out there who only seeks to have fun, as I give this a 10/10.
Before there were the AOE series, Warcraft/Starcraft and the C&C/RA series, with other titles added. COH came and added a whole new level of immersion, with cover, unit weak points and other aspects to RTS ahead of its time. The storyline, unit balance and different army playstyles makes this a timeless classic, one I'm still playing to this day
excellent RTS, loved the mix between micro management and action combat
Played this originally on CD, it's an overall excellent little RTS game. Online play was great back in the day, but lame tactics tended to become predominant in many matches. The AI is very tolerable as an opponent but can become lamer as you become a pro.
As a single player game it is epic and fun even in 2025 looking ahead to 2026. It is often on discount and as a full package for the three games you get over 5+ campaigns it is so much fun really. I don't have enough time to play it all but eventually I will finish it. A testament that it's still very enjoyable in 2025 when this game came out over 10 years ago.

the original one is better than the newer versions by far..
Fun and educating about how brutal the war is from both sides, both allies and axis has their own perspective on the war and it's understandable.
Brings back a lot of memories, and is one of the greatest RTS games imo
game crashes if workshop maps is used
В некоторых моментах нравится больше чем COH 2. Однозначно шикарная игра
5.4 hrs - it felt a little clunky at first but now, it's very engaging and fun to play. A little bit more micromanaging the units that I am used to from Red Alert. It's different but just as enthralling/ I play on the max difficulty and it is very fair so far. The normal difficulty felt bland and boring, like most games. Red Alert normal difficulty = max difficulty in CoH/ We'll see how the 4th and next missions will look like.
Company of Heroes is not just a strategy game—it’s a masterpiece of tactical warfare, delivering one of the most intense, immersive, and satisfying RTS experiences ever made. Even years after its release, it remains the gold standard for World War II strategy games, combining deep tactical gameplay, cinematic battles, and groundbreaking environmental destruction.
The combat in Company of Heroes is phenomenal. Unlike traditional RTS games that focus on base-building and massive armies, CoH emphasizes squad-based tactics, positioning, and cover. Every engagement is meaningful—infantry take cover behind walls, tanks can be flanked, and artillery strikes leave the battlefield in ruins. The dynamic, physics-driven destruction makes every fight feel intense and realistic, as buildings crumble and terrain is reshaped by combat.
The resource system is another stroke of brilliance. Instead of mindless resource gathering, the game forces players to control and defend territory to maintain their economy. This creates a constant tug-of-war, where strategic map control is just as important as combat effectiveness. It rewards aggressive play and intelligent positioning, making every match feel dynamic and engaging.
The campaign is one of the best in RTS history. Following the U.S. forces from the D-Day invasion through the liberation of France, it delivers both cinematic spectacle and tactical depth. The mission variety keeps things fresh, offering everything from urban warfare to large-scale tank battles, all backed by excellent voice acting and storytelling.
Multiplayer is where Company of Heroes truly shines. Whether playing against AI or real opponents, every match is an intense test of strategy and adaptability. The balance between factions, unit counters, and terrain utilization creates endless strategic possibilities, ensuring no two matches feel the same.
Even after all these years, Company of Heroes still holds up thanks to its groundbreaking mechanics, stunning attention to detail, and incredibly satisfying gameplay. Whether you're a seasoned RTS veteran or a newcomer to strategy games, CoH is an absolute must-play.
Rating: 10/10 – A legendary RTS that set the standard for tactical warfare.
Still holding up great. Awesome game
Really great RTS classic that I finally got to try. It's intuitive to new players and yet provides an open invitation to advance along the learning curve. Each of the 4 factions (American, British, Wehrmacht and Panza) have their own styles, doctrines and build paths.
Honestly the most impressive aspect of the game for me was the AI which was extraordinarily good for 2006.
The 6 campaigns provided by the base game and both expansions provide excellent stories and set pieces and then the player can familiarise themselves with custom skirmish battles against the AI in a number of maps including maps made by the community.
Multiplayer is also still somewhat active for those interested.
This game is beautifully done, I love the graphics, I would marry this game if it was legal.
Definitely a worthy RTS game. Loving it so far.
best rts game EVER. 10/10 the second one, neh. 7/10.
My friend Antic told me to play this game COOP with him. we made 8 tanks and defeated the enemies after 7 of the tanks got destroyed.
Great game I like the sequels a lot more but this game had a decent little campaign borrowing a lot from real life events and brand of brothers.
IF THE USA KILL NAZI IN THE 1940S WE NEED TO BRING IT BACK. START WITH ELON MUSK AND HANG THAT THERE AFRICAN DEAD FROM A TREE. REAL AMERCANS WOULD RUSH THAT AFRICANS HOUSE AND RIP THEM OUT OF THEIR BEDS AND HANG THEM OUT BACK TILL DEATH.
Timeless classic. I came late to this game in 2022 - 2023 but fell in love with it. Recommended 100/100. Each campaign parts had story attached.
Positives:
- Surprisingly historically accurate, not perfect, but at least it's not insultingly bad.
- 'Liberation of Caen' campaign lets you play as the Bri'ish.
Negatives:
- Keys aren't re-bindable & the defaults suck.
- The optimisation is so bad this is still struggles to run properly even on modern gaming hardware.
Company of Heroes is all about strategy. You have to make choices and live with them after you make a commitment to one of three alternatives at the beginning of the game. It is fun to play multiplayer against other players as well as against AI (called skirmish).
best strategy in ww2
Great game overall quit once but came back and didn't know how I left. I personally like playing as the Germans the most. 100% reccomend no doubt in my mind.
I play only campaign, but even that it top notch. From invasion on Normandy to stealth infiltration of V2 complex, almost all missions stuck fondly in my memory. With gameplay that force you to balance limited unit number vs tactics.
10/10
It was visually impressive for its time and delivered satisfying gameplay. The story was present but not especially memorable.
Best RTS I have ever played. Better than COH 2 and 3 IMO.
Game support is terrible. Is unplayable after first campaign.
A great WW2 RTS game that is easy to learn and pick up. You'll have no issues running this game in 4K max settings on your average hardware and it still look great. Totally worth picking up on sale and supporting a classic RTS.
FYI this review is about the single-player campaign. Never mind the WW2 setting, if you like real-time strategy or strategy in general, this is definitely a must-play. History buffs will appreciate the attention to detail and many nods to WW2 media such as Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, as it portrays in part the efforts of the 101st Airborne during WW2.
It's really nice to not worry about resource farming and just focus on combat. You generate resources by capturing territory, which is something you would be doing anyway. The infantry units are made up of squads which you control in their entirety instead of by individual units, and their AI makes them take cover, go prone while under suppressive fire, etc. Lots of variety in units and everything has a purpose, even builder units are effective (e.g., American engineers can use flamethrowers which are great against infantry and buildings).
If you want a good RTS campaign this is for you, its gameplay mechanics unique over the traditional RTS games of the time.
Great game lasted the test of time as far as play-ability! HOWEVER, Multiplayer is a mess Unless your a neck beard mouth breather... Multiplayer PVP is extremely competitive and for a casual player a nightmare if your record isn't absolutely trash and you don't get kicked from every game you try to join!
Gameplay: 10
Visuals: 10
Sound: 10
Story: 10
Experience: 10
Verdict: Fantastic RTS
Overall its an average RTS war game but it has some more interesting mechanics such as the fact that you can recapture enemy equipments such as the anti-tank guns and recoilless guns.
