Great game
bought this as a package with COH 1 , OF, TOV and COH 2, but normandy campaign is locked? solution is they want me to buy the legacy edition including all the DLCs FULL price! without subtracting my paid DLC from another package... cant play this game since 2020...
Timeless classic.
TLDR: An extremely solid RTS which stands the test of time.
General Thoughts/Overview:
Please note: This is a single player campaign review alone, I haven’t tried it online and have no intention of doing so.
I got a lot more from Company of Heroes (CoH) than I thought I would. I enjoyed both the ‘real’ campaigns, and also the short hero stories in tales of valour. The game itself is Real Time Strategy using the capture points to gain resources system, in fact I think this was one of the first to do so. Play as allies or axis, with both factions having two different branches of their forces with three specialisation trees you can choose from, each with their own unique units and perks.
This is a WW2 RTS. The American campaign follows Able Company doing literally everything you’d expect the American campaign to do. The British campaign follows the battle for Caen, and the German campaign follows Operation Market Garden, but from the German perspective. I thought it was an interesting twist on the usual stories and enjoyed it thoroughly.
The main campaigns gave me about 15 hours of play each, and the short stories around an hour each.
Pros:
- Each faction feels very different. To the point where I’d recommend doing the tutorials for each one, as they way they are built is asymmetrical but balanced. I enjoyed the way each campaign felt very different.
- Interesting stories, interesting maps, interesting ideas, interesting perspectives, and interesting and varied gameplay. Solving problems form a multitude of angles was really good fun. From the creeping artillery based pushes building trenches and emplacements by the British forces to the lightning mobility of the Panzers, with the American and Wehrmacht offering a healthy mix of the two.
- The supporting gameplay is decent as well. Terrain effects combat, and combat changes terrain. Garrison buildings, or hide behind their remains. Barrage an area then hide infantry in the craters. Set traps, ambushes, and defensive lines. Use light tanks to crush small barriers, or support large slow moving tanks to push through heavy blockades. Secure points, use the defences yourself. The supply system works incredibly well, with only one exception I’ll get to.
Cons:
- So that one exception is that you can’t always easily abandon equipment to move forward. This led to a situation where I had to use my own commandos to blow up my own howitzers so I could build a new encampment further forward while I was creeping my lines forward. This was both frustrating and broke immersion. It was also a problem having ‘dead supply’ in a lot of the defence maps, where you need to build stationary emplacements, but then didn’t have enough left over to maintain a mobile enough force to fight effectively.
- The pathing of units is suicidal, with fog of war causing issues when I know there’s a sniper, and I’ve tried to send my men in an arc around using shift commands, but they sometimes ignore that and kill themselves running into emplacements I wanted them to avoid.
- The size and scale of the maps might be quite daunting for folks who don’t have RTS experience. Several of the maps feature multi-prong attacks which are extremely difficult to hold while the enemy just floods you from multiple angles with far more units than you can muster, leading to line collapses and the need to fortify very small areas to effectively fight back.
Suggested improvements:
- Allow abandoning of equipment to provide a ‘weapons crew’ who can magically fire all the weapons and offers only a limited fighting potential otherwise. Also provide the option to build ‘uncrewed’ emplacements to match.
- More ways to increase army cap. I enjoyed what we had but it felt too small in most maps. I imagine technology held back the amount that could be supported 20 years ago, but it must be possible to increase unit cap now.
[*] I’d have liked some more ‘advanced’ orders. Such as “Retreat to nearest HQ when at 75%,50%,25%,0% Squad strength (selectable)”, “Merge units of the same type” “Patrol”, “Abandon Garrison when building HP at 75%,50%,25%,0% stability.”
Overall Recommendation:
This game is old enough to buy a beer for itself in most countries in the civilised world. Given that, it’s done exceptionally well to be as solid and relevant to the genre today as it was then. I recommend this to WW2 game fans, to experienced RTS players, and to folks who’d like an armchair general experience.
I do not recommend this to first time RTS players, to players looking for a huge variety, to players looking for an unstoppable overpowered army to crush their opponents, and it is not for children.
Overall I happily recommend this. You can get all the content with a bundle, it goes on sale for cheap, and I’m looking forward to trying the next one.
My curator page with reviews by genre. In case you want to find more games, or even reviews, like this one.
Excellent war game with realistic battles and sounds.
I love it, being able to command troops down the individual soldier
best rts game only thing is needed is soviets
Soldiers with rifles destroys a mg42 armored car before the machine gin kills them so ridiculous lmao
great strategic planning game. Great way to pass some time by didn't even realize that I've went through 15 hours so far it's crazy how time flies by when you're having fun
Despite it's age I really love this game
really solid ww2 rts
The easy and relaxing play.
LMAO there aint no way bro... this game is such a downgrade from CoH2 its crazy. Its a complete pain to play in skirmish.
This is the most realistic strategy game until the year it released. Realistic tactial combat of WW2. It is so good to realize WW2 as a strategy game.
Best part. No subsequent ones have ever reached its level. The effects, sounds are amazing, it's 2006, and everything is done so well that it amazes even now. I recommend everyone to take it. There is also a cool free mod Eastern Front. Dare to recommend!
Brilliant addictive little game
I wasnt sure id like this game until hour number 110. Up until then i though "eh, its ok i guess, but i wish there was more borderline Nazis in the player community IRL and a much more frustratingly stupid way to arrange my controls for the keyboard. The default controls are barely even impossible!".
I did eventually figure out those two problems, I now pretend in the fan servers of discord to be a female anime picture, and ive finally been able to meet all those lovely intolerant jack-boots i had longed to meet for the first 110 hours. I even managed to make friends with several hundred players who are so good , and they know they are that good, that rather then humiliate me over the course of a strategic game will instead commit all there resources into the loudest fastest and most impotent display of preferably off feild artillery, and then inorder to save me the embarasment of having to admit i just cannot compete with th eintellect, simply shut down there program and have me booted from the match. Some even scream NOOOOB , which im sure is a shorthand way of stating "no oh uh oh b(ye)" - clearly a way to say its not that you that lacks strategic ability but rather they themself felt it was unjust for me to have to face a player of there advanced ability and having recognised this mistake, decide to quickly say there farewell and cancel the match inorder to efficiently and politly re ernter the que in the lobby for another, better balanced match. I can only thank them for there wisdom and rapid assesment in order to prevent me a new player from getting discouraged in teh beggining hours of learning this game. And besides, everybody knows the foyer is the best part of this experience, such a wide variety of different people and a diverse pool of opinions on topics such as "are British players retarded actually" and the exactly detailed minutae of there manifesto as to why they simply will not ever play as allies. I must agree, before being lectured for several hours on the topic - i had no idea just how desperatly i really needed to know there expert opinion on the topic.
All in all I think this game is actually incredibly fun, and thus unsuitable for anyone to play. Luckily though the games designers and programmers had discovered ways to balance that enjoyment with things like American Infantry blob rush, German tank production in early game of at least 4 Stug, pioneer teams that dont get shot no matter how close or the exact number of rifles discharged directly at them and a lovely idea of distributing randomly across the keyboard all the keys you will need to actually play the game in a manner both fast enough and competant enough to not look like a half drowned elk carcass in a drug induced full body spasm or a brain dead chimpanzee with both hands nailed to his forehead. Naturally they removed the ability to decide for ourselves what our key layout wouldlook like and the inconvenient hassle of choosing a distance and angle of our own choice for the game camera out of millions of combinations by deciding to settle on placing the view exactly far too close to the player characters but enticingly far out enough to make recalling techniques for winning bewilderingly evaporate from our minds as we breakdown into rage fuelled depressive tantrums after our elite highlytrained infantry decide again that the correct course of action when confronted with a tank about to murder us is to rapidly stop all movement fire ineffectivly and proceed to advance directly into any artillery fired at us all while reminding poor sweet Conrad to once again tie his fukin shoelaces.
All in all an excellent and responsive narrative setting coupled with graphics that do captivate and enthrall players regardless of age due to being stunningly beautiful it is mercifuly saved by an excruciatingly idiotic experience of applied late-stage dementia level AI in the individual soldiers choices of action coupled with a game camera that is universaly remarked to be the dumbest decision ever undertaken ever of all time but very closely followed by a key design imported directly from a syphilitic dullards left buttock - it is an experience only enriched by suicidal levels of rage and frustration at the incrasingly baffling choices of player interaction made by this studio - which has managed to go broke and squander fanatical levels of fan admiration for there creations repeatedly for the past 2 decades but does not trust you to choose your own 12 keys and directonal indicators on th ekeyboard or exact level and inclination of viewing angle.
And rightly so - we are cretins and we deserve to be treated as such. Punish us Relic, for you are much much much better and cooler then us.
Amen.
*the author of this piece was given a free copy of the game from a anonymous and presumably Korean individual he will never meet via random torrenting software after having purchased the entire series at least 3 times over the years with no way to retain his rights to that ownership and gladly agreeein ghe would do so again while driblling from one corner of his slack mouth and vocalising the word "DDDUUUHHHRR".
This is a fun strategy game. can be played solo, PVP or coop. Tactics matter.
I think Company of Heroes 2 and 3 are nowehere near as good as this game
Some games are just classics you could play forever. This is one of them
Just like World War Two
The game was really great. It had a very beautiful story and cool DLCs. Just because I had played before the game Men of War, I couldn't connect with the skirmish part.
One of my favourite strategy games that is based on WWII. The vehicles and units are good enough for Coh1 as its the 1st game, compared to Coh2. In my opinion, I like the UI on this game compared to Coh2. This game has some of my favourite tanks, which include Tiger 1, Tiger 2 and Piershing. Its fun how strategy this game is, mortars, mgs, artilleries, etc.
Great game. For sure.
Still the best of the series.
fun to play!!!
Fun and easy to play
to hell with steam, steam stopped working...now im using a vpn to acess steam, i cant even play it... after installing
This game saved my marriage!
Me and my wife were constantly arguing over the most trivial things and it was heading straight to a divorce until one day I noticed this on the steam store and so I bought it for myself and gifted my wife a copy since then we could not be happier as we play as the Germans and just devastate areas of the map with V2 rockets
Thanks Company of Heroes for liberating my marriage from the possibility of divorce and helping me meet my new girlfriend too!
5 stars!
its a very good game worth every penny
The best RTS for low APMers. Possibly the GOAT
Very fun, i love it!
This is a pretty good real time strategy game to play through. Additionally it's particularly fun to play the bridge map with a friend and 2 enemies and kill the enemy over and over as they try to cross that bridge :D!
Awesome game, has some history to it
its fun to play, some missions can be hard but if you stock up on tanks you can steam roll the enemy.
i would recommend this game, if you like RTS then this if for you
7/10
"MG squad under fire!"
Best game ever,
p.s. COH 2 and 3 developers I don't know how you couldn't continue an almost perfect game!
I had been on the look out for a WW2 or Modern Warfare strategy game as I mostly play Ancient World (i.e. Total War and Age of Empires) and there seemed to be many out there to choose from.
Buying this at 2.99 on sale was an excellent decision. I don't like the competitive side of things and don't wish to take things online and sometimes the HUD can be daunting in itself with so many units doing so many things but this game is simple, good looking for its age, cheap, fun, and entertaining with a nice campaign. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone when on sale.
played these back when i was younger for hours and hours on end great game still the best one imo
i absolutely am in love with this game and the others that came after
Nothing to be said that hasn't already been said, Awesome game, 10/10
I keep re-installing this game at least once a year... probably the best RTS i have played, including it's expansion packs
The game is great, but do you know whats even better? Waffles.
This is a step by step instruction to make waffles from scratch.
1. First you will need your ingredients.
You will need 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 4 teaspoons baking powder, 2 tablespoons white sugar, 2 eggs, 1 ½ cups warm milk, ⅓ cup butter, melted, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar; set aside. Preheat waffle iron to desired temperature.
3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Stir in the milk, butter and vanilla.
4. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture; beat until blended.
5. Ladle the batter into a preheated waffle iron
6. Cook the waffles until golden and crisp.
7. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Company of Heroes is a game that I've tried to like over the years, but unfortunately, I just don't. I want to like it. I love the World War II setting, and the graphics are great for a 2006 game. The game was also critically acclaimed, and won a lot of awards.
However, there are too many small things about this game that make me want to stop and play something else. The World War II setting is great, but this game only has D-Day and Operation Cobra. Those two events were important, but they were not the entire war. I also think the gameplay is too fast-paced. I prefer to take my time when I play RTS games. Because of the fast pace, the game comes off to me like it doesn't know what it wants to be. It feels like a weird mixture of realism and arcadey gameplay, and it doesn't work for me.
If you like fast-paced games, you might enjoy this one, but this one's not for me. If you want a slower-paced RTS game, I'd play Age of Empires. Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War is another good choice. It was made by the same developer as CoH, and it's thankfully slower-paced. If you want to stick with World War II, I'd play Men of War: Assault Squad 2.
Yep, it's solid and representative of a great era of gaming, 2006 was offering this and that's awesome. Didn't learn about COH until recently, but loads of fun, smart AI, and different play styles across the factions.
9/10 overall
9/10 graphics
8/10 game play
10/10 enemy intelligence
One of the best RTS games I have ever played, the game is high quality and very detailed for a old game. I highly recommend people to buy the game if you are looking for a military game where you command a group of soldiers. 9/10 The game is so worth the price.
never stop firing artillery ever not even for a second
Man with gun go pew pew then get hit by a mortar.
Hahha...18 hours...I've been playing since the first COH was released. No matter how many times
I play, I never get bored. It seemed the right thing to do, using Steam. The disks are in the archive. A great enduring title and a great game. Will never be outdated.
Company of heroes is nice game!
Concept of long term thinking is really important in this game
movement sometimes feels off but it is not a big problem
The early-mid-late game are really well defined in this game compared to others.
There is a moment where you defend then you combine forces to attack and when your attack fails you use HEAVY ARMOR to break enemy lines only to get critical damages and lose the tank lol
THEN YOU GET ANOTHER HEAVY ARMOR!
7/10. This is a good strategy game but definitely not S tier in my opinion. I finished the campaign and all I can say it was fun but nothing special. The gameplay is really nice but the missions are very scripted and enemies will spawn behind your back sometimes and I find this mechanic annoying. The videos between the missions are really bad too, I don't know if it was like that back in the days but now they are very laggy and low fps. Anyway its a good game, I would recommend to finish it at least once
A one of my favorite game. Old but Gold
