RPG Maker strikes again!
Lycah is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction.
As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development.
This time Andorlea/Warfare/SimProse/whatever other shell account this guy uses to try hide his identity has once more stamped out a painfully generic copy + paste RPG Maker asset flip. There's a dark ages religious conflict theme, but of course it's garbage, badly written and obviously done over the space of a weekend or less. It's horribly basic, riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, full of stock copy + pasted RPG Maker assets... no real game development has taken place here, this is just a cash grab, it's shovelware polluting Steam for profit. This "developer" has dumped over 100 copy+pasted RPG Maker asset flips onto Steam, and keeps pumping out minimum viable product RPG Maker asset flips as rapidly as possible to try gouge gamers.
We must ask why this ongoing pollution has any serious value for gamers or the gaming industry. This kind of cash grab construction kit shovelware from bad actors like Andorlea gives amateur developers a bad name. This pollution takes marketing space away from genuine indie developers who are doing the right thing, and making real games instead of copying+pasting premade assets in a children's video game construction kit. It makes it harder for gamers to find genuinely made games. This pollution is harmful to Steam, to gamers and the gaming industry.
Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Lycah has the comically optimistic (if it wasn't so sad) price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger.
I want trevor to carry me off this godforsaken earth into the heavens of his big beefcake arms. trevor is the one and only rude man that will be mine one day.
I loved the moment where I equiped trevor with all items and then he left.
10/10 marriage simulator
Weird that it's been three years since I played this, feels like it was yesterday. Eh...anyway, Lycah was a dark game. I think it felt a bit buggy. But I didn't refund it and I was interested in other games by this developer, so I'll give it a thumbs up for now.
Lycah started with a dark premise that hearkened back to similar days of the Roman Empire Crusades and the forced conversion of the native peoples in the areas they overtook. The game on top of this also adds in some fantasy paranormal lore through fantasy creatures and demons. What the game does not do however is explain. The game starts out with you the player playing as Lycah being treated as an exile in her village. The crusade then comes to overtake the village and cuts out to lycah challenging the general. After this cut out that seemed like it would be a boss battle you instead find yourself on what seems to be a castle balcony talking to the very general you challenged that was there to overtake your village. You would imagine in these circumstances Lycah would hold some animosity towards this individual and yet throughout the story Lycah fails to show any indication of animosity (except against the religion) or sympathy for others.
After a short adventure with no guidance around a castle area you are to find the leader behind the crusades and get your next mission. Lycah for some reason works for this man now but good luck figuring out why as it's never explained much like 90% of all the other lore based questions the game will put before you. Upon reaching the new area you are met with your first challenge. Crossing a bridge that has been destroyed and gathering the materials needed to cross. The game does not hold your hand and so you are left to figure out where you are meant to go. At this point you still haven't gathered any real way to heal and the enemies here all hit as hard as you do. When they come in packs it's suffice to say you will ultimately perish before they will without any real way to heal yourself. Thankfully this doesn't persist through the rest of the game.
If you manage to make it past the wolf forest you are greeted with the only town in the game that serves as a main hub. 80% of all your equips are going to be found in dungeons and anything that can be bought won't be available until after the first couple of quests. Despite the game at this point being enjoyable and seemingly starting to get somewhere, when you solve the issue in the village and are heading back the game ends. No explanations, nothing. This is ultimately where the issue lies. For a game that showed promise and an intriguing setting, there is little lore to actually be explored, and far less that is explained in a way players can make sense of.
Ultimately, Lycah showed a promising story that failed to deliver. Clocking in at just under a 3 hour playtime it also does not manage to stay within the $1 per hour rule especially since the majority of assets are utilized from the engines defaults. Due to this I unfortunately can't recommend this game.
Very much recommending it, at least from what I've seen so far. Great (if lightweight) story, and a beautiful atmosphere, overall. - Sure, a "fan game", but definitely a gem in my collection from now on. One of the best gaming moments in a long while.
loved it absolutely, but it's way too short :(
not bad, not good, but too short
Fun little RPG that got me nostalgic about some of the old RPGs I used to play when I was little. I think the graphics fit great with the feel of the game!
This game was interesting to start. Then it changed years ahead with no reasoning. She tries to save the chief then flash forward no reason for it. Then it ends just when you are hoping to find out what's going on! What's up??
I hope you have bug sparay because this game has alot of them! I ran into three bugs that seem to freeze the game, right before saving so I had to complete previous quests. I get nervous when there are so many bugs that affect game play and progress. It's too frustrating when I encounter a bug that requires you to replay 20 minutes of game play. I do not recommend this game becasue of the bugs and crashing.
They get points for trying, but it doesn't really come together.
Lycah is trying to be a really grounded, dark RPGmaker game, and, from what I saw, achieves that tone pretty damn well. Its opening sections establish a setting of Pagan peoples amidst conquest and forced conversion by a force of Christian-esque Crusaders that's clearly inspired by real historical events in Eastern Europe, with a layer of creepy folklore-esque supernatural elements on top of the historical ones that also looked pretty interesting. Really, those elements of setting and tone really seem to be the strongest thing the game has going for it, with a setting that's more bleak than dark, and seemed well-handled, not really trying to phone in the darkness of the setting, which is nice.
What the game certainly doesn't have going for it is an engaging combat system, or, much more annoyingly, any shits to give if you know what the hell the game actually wants from you or not. In the process of getting to the first town (Where I stopped playing), I went through three areas: The "Prologue" of sorts, a Crusader fortress full of NPCs, and a forest path, and managed to find myself lost and struggling to figure out where the hell my mission objective was in the latter two, and in the first I only found my objective by accident in the first place.
In addition, the actual narrative crossed the line pretty quickly from Vague with promises of explanations to just annoyingly vague. The game opens with dialogue that clearly sets up questions about who your character is and about their backstory... and then in less than 5 minutes, not only never tries to answer the first question (Which is allowed to be on a slow burn, perfectly fair), but then quickly raises a lot more that don't seem to share an answer. On multiple fronts, Lycah is unconcerned with bothering to explain itself, and as a result, fails pretty thoroughly to engage right from the start. And I never really found any dialogue to particularly grip me. Nothing really put me off overly, it was passable, but not good enough to be an attraction. Hard for the writing to be an attraction when you know basically nothing about what the hell is going on.
Now- I did not get very far in, so the "It gets better" arguement may be true here, and I certainly hope so, there's potential here, but I gave up on it anyways: I have a lot of games sitting in my library that I haven't gotten to, and I just don't care enough to slog further along and see if this one's any good. Considering this is Steam we're talking about, you probably have bettering things to do with your time as well. If you're up for a dull combat system compared to other rpgmaker titles, and feel like exploring every knook and cranny twice over trying to find your freaking objective isn't going to bother you too terribly, then go on ahead. I'm refunding it.
I love the game (so far) I hope more people play it in the future!
Another great game from Thorne games creator :) 8/10
This game is like the good ole rpg's . Can't get enough of these. Too bad it isnt 40 hours Id pay alot more. But for the price its was a good time. These guys got the right idea for rpgs. Simple like FF1 good music and story line its all you need.
I liked it, but it was way too short.
I hope you like grinding from the beginning because stock piling on hp and mp items is the only way to stay alive shortly after starting.
