Full disclosure: I fully believe in supporting Indie studios, which is the primary reason I bought this game. I saw it at PAX East and it was an interesting twist (no pun intended) on a genre that I CAN enjoy, but I'm not a die-hard fan of.
Gameplay: This feels pretty....meh? I tried both Eagle Island and Eagle Island Twist (these are similar but NOT the same game!) and both felt pretty meh.
Soundtrack: Nothing that's going to blow you out of the water, but the tracks I did experience were pretty enjoyable. Very mellow.
Graphics: Intended to be a retro pixel game, this does fit up to the standard. There are options to "enhance" them, but it's just like an SNES emulator - it only "enhances" so far, until it starts to make it look blurry/muddy.
Controls: This is a primary gripe I have for the game, I prefer to play with a gamepad and I just couldn't get used to aiming/shooting the owl.
Caveats: The game penalizes you if you enable certain things, like respawning after death (which you lose all your coins and such anyway, which kind of defeats the purpose of a respawn IMO), double/unlimited aiming time with the owl (otherwise, the owl auto-launches after a couple seconds of aiming, whether you're ready or not) and some other "perks" you can enable. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth that a game is going to penalize me for turning on what I believe should be some automatic QOL hacks when I'm not playing on a hardcore mode or anything - the normal "entry" difficulty should just have these things included, or if optional (as they currently are), not penalize me for enabling them.
Overall, I'd suggest only getting this at a discount. Make sure you watch your two hour time limit - I'm within my rights to refund right now as I'm only 80 minutes in (at the time of this writing) but as I said before, I saw this at PAX East, and I like supporting small studios. Although this game isn't totally for me, they've earned my money. Give this one a shot, but play both game modes before you make a decision. One is a rogue-like, the other is not.
Have fun folks!
makes me feel like life is worth living
The aiming feels kind of awkward on controller, it won't let me remap to right stick and use right trigger as attack, it feels awkward using left stick to move and aim.
Interesting atmosphere, and cool visuals and mechanic ideas, but it couldn't keep me playing near endgame. There are many dungeons that start to feel too repetitive, especially given how easy it is to die on later levels (a lot of which seem like rearrangements of early dungeons). Clearly quite a bit of love put in, but not something I could recommend unfortunately.
I haven't dabbled much with the procedurally generated one but the other game is pure gold. :)
One of the best I've ever played.
I'm blown away! Not only is this a fantastic platformer with great visuals, music, and gameplay, but it's got an extensive set of accessibility features that surpasses most games.
I want to start off by saying, that this game is really fun. It's got unique gameplay with two different game modes. Classic mode features roguelike elements with randomly generated levels. Twist features no roguelike elements but has gameplay I have yet to explore. The randomly generated levels look impressive and feel right wandering through with each run. On top of that, you fight by commanding your bird to attack by aiming in different directions. Any aquired abilities are temporary and will disspear over time and are also limited by a number of slots they fit into when you first get them from a chest or a shop. Other abilities are won by progressing through the game and are permanent.
Now on to the incredible accessibility features!
Eagle Island has a surprising amount of features that cater to the visually impaired (like myself) and folks who need special controls or auto aim.
Here are some of my favorite features!
1. All text can be read by enabling the screen-reader functionality in the game.
2. You can dim the backdrop by 20% Increment's so that the characters and level stand out more. (I use 20%)
3. Beeps for low health or end of combos can be enabled.
4. You can enable outlines for the level or characters and items so that things stand out even more! (I use outlined characters and items)
All that said, Eagle Island not only offers plenty of content with challenging and fun gameplay, but is a shining example for what other games should include or consider as far as accessibility.
Cool graphics, great mechanics and level design. Enjoyed playing this casually and speedrunning it.
Metroid-Vania Roguelike type game where you fight with a ranged bird attack that has inf ammo but limited special ammo, I love the look and sound effects of the game, and the rogue like element is fair, it just swaps the stage around every attempt.
In this review I will primarily be reviewing the Twist DLC as it is what I have mostly played and it comes with the game for free and is essentially a full game in of itself.
Twist features many hand crafted levels that often have an interesting mechanic within each level that may be unique only to that level or revisited in a later one. Each one of these levels and even bosses is very well done, letting the player enjoy a wide range of fun platforming action.
Twist improves on some classic platformer tropes, an example being on a level that has the "auto-scrolling" function, it actually is fairly slow but if you get more towards the edge of the screen the auto-scroll speeds up so that it never feels as limiting. Another example being the water levels which are commonly kind of slow paced and are the levels many may dread in common platformers. However, in Eagle Island you have the option to move very fast in the water with an underwater dash making the movement through them feel much better.
A bonus for old school gamers is that there is many references, sometimes subtle and sometimes very direct to classic games that this one had taken inspiration from. You'll probably be picking up on them and enjoying a little nostalgia from that as well :D
It almost goes without saying by anyone who has checked out some videos of the game before buying but the art style and music are gorgeous as well and maintain that quality 2D look and feel throughout the entire experience.
While the base game that is more of a rogue-lite that I didn't find very appealing, I can safely say thanks to Twist I can highly recommend this game to anyone that loves 2D platformers like me!
Ive had a lot of fun with this game ever since the base game that is a metroidvania/roguelike was released, now with the Twist making it a more platforming experience, it realy is like getting 2 full fledged games for one!
Im pretty sure its at least about 60 hours of content if you decide to do full completion, 100% recommended!
Absolutely phenomenal. The free twist DLC is amazing, the main game is comfy and fun, it is worth its price point and more.
I found the mechanics to be too clunky and the design choices are not for me (limited uses of alternate weapons, need to combo to get hearts and ammo, enemies are not always set up for combos, upgrades are temporary).
You should try it though, a lot of people like it, and the art and music are good.
I bought this game because it's a rogue-like/lite, and a platformer. I was going to leave a negative review, however they released an update with quality of life improvements, so it's better, but not perfect.
As a rogue-like/lite, it's ok. What somewhat irks me is that you only gain certain very useful abilities as you progress through the game (double-jump being the main one), but most all the other abilities are found as runes, which expire over time, and reset when you die. While it does add a certain challenge to the game, it wasn't something I like in rogue-lites.
As a platformer, it's ok. They fixed my biggest complaint about the movement (it's no longer "floaty"), but it's still meh. There are certain things about the platforming that I would consider minor annoyances. You can't duck to avoid attacks, you auto-grab onto cliff edges, which leaves your head vulnerable to attacks when you would otherwise want to fall, and you can't look down (or outside the main view). Also, the way the player is controlled is shared with the direction you aim. This is better now, as you are no longer restricted to 8 aim directions, however it means that you'll sometimes aim the wrong way because you want to move another way at the same time. This also made swimming extra frustrating. Equally, there seems to be a brief cooldown between when you attack and when you can start moving again, unless you jump. This was probably done to prevent you from falling off ledges as you aim to attack, but in some scenarios can be an annoyance also.
I played through the game 100% (excluding the extra modes), and the level of difficulty was a bit all over the place. Bosses were generally the easiest part of levels, but its getting there that's challenging. While the core mechanic of the combat is to make combos, giving you hearts after a 4 hit combo (by default), and mana for every combo hit, this becomes restrictive and repetitive. Because the dungeons are randomly generated, you aren't guaranteed to even find 4 enemies in any given room, meaning it's more difficult to get health. This was more so a problem in the early levels than later game.
My last complaint about the game is its performance. I don't understand how these days a 2D pixelated platformer can have lag. While I understand that it isn't strictly using pixel graphics with some of the effects, a similar game such as Dead Cells performs beautifully by comparison. This one here, despite playing with a GTX 1060, I have spots where I get noticeable frame drops, particularly in rainy areas. I totally get that optimizing isn't easy, and I hope to see this improved in future updates, but in its current state I found it disappointing.
So why am I giving this a positive review? For one, the developers listened to the community. They made some huge improvements to the game based on user feedback, majorly improving the experience. Despite frustrations, I did find myself enjoying parts of the game. The aesthetic is quite nice, the music is ok, and the different dungeons have enough differences between them to make them feel less repetitive (not all of them, mind you). If you're looking to buy this game, be prepared to get frustrated, and make sure you use a controller with analogue controls. I also recommend you pick up the ancient runes in each level the first time, unless you want to play through it again to get the secret level. While I don't plan on replaying the game, or trying out the other modes, I feel I got my money's worth (on sale).
... and don't get me started on the water level. Just uhg....
I can't recommend this game enough! The controls are smooth and the combat is engaging. It provides the right level of challenge on it's Core difficulty without being overly frustrating. For those who are newer to these style of games, it offers several different levels of settings customization so that you can tweak it to fit to your particular taste and playstyle. All in all this is a 10/10. This is the kind of care and attention I love to see in a game.
A Roguelike playable by the Visually Impaired?
Yes that's right, a selection of accessibility options from Text to Speech, Auto Aim, the option to darken the background, put an outline around characters and platforms. It is commendable, a few little glitches with the speech made it difficult to work out controls without a little external help, otherwise this is very playable.
A side scrolling platformer with a number of difficulty levels.
It made a refreshing change to be able to play a game like this, if any Dev wants a template for accessibility then look no further.
Here's hoping the options become standard, until then, buy this game and support the Dev he deserves a big success!
Eagle Island is the perfection of the "roguelite" genre - a story mode with roguelike dungeons, adjustable difficulty that rewards skillful play but doesnt require it for completion, and extra post game challenges for replay value and challenge for people who want more. Aside from that, the gameplay is really fun, the music is nice, the graphics suit the various biomes well and the passion that went into this project is obvious - do yourself a favor and play this game
A lot of rogue-lites ride the fine line of difficult and just plain frustrating, and Eagle Island fell more into the latter for me. The problems in this game felt pretty avoidable and I got bored of the game as a whole pretty quickly.
Pros:
+ The art. I think everyone can agree the look of the game is super fun. The charm of the game is what initially pulled me in and what kept me playing after the first couple levels. The colors are nice and the main dude and your bird really pop even against some pretty colorful backdrops.
+ The Combo system. Using combos for health and mana instead of just arbitrary "points" was a really cool feature and made it a lot more fun to try and do some ambitious shooting and stunts.
+ The Powerup system. I really like the idea of being able to customize your upgrades and the fact that they start deteriorating over time is a pretty cool way to move players along and incentivize exploration for more powerups. The coin system strikes the perfect balance between too many and too little and the money management adds a new layer of difficultly and fun.
Cons:
- The maps. Rogue-lites benefit from the mechanic that each run of the game is going to be different from each other, which makes it frustrating that the playthroughs in each of these maps is incredibly linear. Don't be fooled; each map may LOOK different from each other but they are all very point A to point B with one very specific way the game wants you to go through it (aside from ONE optional secret thing per level). There's a lot of dying in this game and it gets super frustrating when every playthrough is almost identical aside from some slight enemy placement.
- Life. With only three hits available across some longer levels you don't really have much wiggle room to mess up. I don't mind hard rogue-likes but the limited health really shoots the combo system in the foot here. Doing crazy stunts for combos becomes far too close of a call to attempt with such limited health and when one of the few ways to gain health is doing combos it feels like the two features are actively playing against each other.
- The Controls. Jumping makes you feel like you're floating away with the birbs. I know it's like that to give the player more time to make precise shots but it ends up making timing your jumping and landing a whole lot more difficult. Shooting can be frustrating when you're only allowed one gun (your bird friend) that fires pretty darn slow, but there are some upgrades that help with that.
- The Powerbirds. When I first saw that your little guy could turn into powered-up birds I got super excited and thought the designs for them were really cool. The problem is with the flawed mana gain system where you get a pretty limited amount of shots for your powerbirds. It's rather tedious to keep switching back to them between combos when you can pretty much wail on most baddies with your main dude. I've only ever felt like I had to use the powerbirds for the appropriate boss/gate and not much else. Was really expecting more from this feature.
- The story. Not a super big con but it's just kinda mehhhh.. bad guy steals the princesses, err I mean protecter birds, but is bad guy REAL BAD GUY?!? There's also very few characters in the mundane overworld and the ones that are there are just to further the story and no more, which leaves the overworld feeling super empty and a chore to explore. It's a shame, cause you can tell a lot of work went into the look of the game but it just ends up feeling kind of incomplete on story and character development. You'd think there would be a more interesting storyline in a game about birds with magic powers on a mysterious island.
It's by no means a horrible game, and you could tell a lot of love went into it. But for me the negatives outweighed the positives on this one. I'd still give it a shot if it was on a super sale or something. Who knows, you might like it more than I did.
I would like to mention that I only played roughly 4-5 hours of this game but at this point I don't feel any drive or incentive to continue playing, so I may be off on some of these. Who knows, maybe around hour 8 or so the story really opens up and the powerups get a whole lot more useful. Idk. i need a sandwich.
Pros: The art is wonderful. The music is enjoyable. The concept is fresh. The items are fun and can stack for cool effect.
Cons: Controls are finicky. Movement slides around a lot. Rooms and platforming are repetitive. The combo system ( a core mechanic ) is not satisfying, especially when none of the rooms have enough enemies in them to get the combo count you need for health. I continually open chests by accident because even the slightest upward direction on the joystick gets registered as an "up arrow" input.
Purchased for the rougelite aspects. Regret it.
I haven't played a game like this in a long time and I'm loving Eagle Island! I played the demo initially, but the full game feels much better with its story mode and additional options. It's really well-crafted. I haven't had any major problems.
It can be a difficult game. The hardest dungeon took me 23 runs to defeat, but most were 5 or less runs. It took me a couple days to beat the story mode on "casual" (easy) and now I'm playing through to completion.
Some of the negative reviews I've read have valid complaints, and fortunately the developer has been responsive and added different settings and ways to play the game, which is great to see.
Update: Just completed all secret areas, etc. The game requires some patience and acquired skills. It's frustrating but also rewarding. The objectives and secrets aren't so cryptic that I got stuck or anything - it was nearly perfect in that respect. I liked the story, artwork, music, bosses, etc. Great overall game!
Really enjoying my time with Eagle Island, although the game can be difficult at times. The games pixel visuals are gorgeous and there are many different types of environments to experience throughout the game. There's plenty of content here to stick your teeth into and is worth the £15 price point! Looking forward to see what else this developer does in the future! :)
This is a great game for casual and hardcore players alike. If someone is having trouble they can switch to the casual ruleset at no penalty whatsoever. Don't go in expecting some grand metroidvania because that is not what this game is. Eagle Island is a rogue-lite platformer which simply draws influence from the metroidvania genre instead of trying to recreate it.
Combat is fairly simple, yet challenging. Take care when you aim your trusty owl as there is a slight cooldown to use him again if you miss. There is no cooldown if you hit your target, which leads to extremely satisfying combos when clearing out a room or fighting a boss. New enemies and enemy variants are introduced with each biome to keep things fresh. I would recommend to take the time to learn how each of them behaves before going in owls blazing.
Aside from clearing the game, Eagle Island offers a rank system as well some collectibles and unique achievements for the more hardcore player. In order to get the best rank, the player must maintain high combos through rooms while being quick and taking minimal damage. This is probably something I'd recommend to do after beating the story as the game does have a persistent unlock system.
Between the amount of story levels, randomized seeds, challenge modes, and optional goals, Eagle Island is full of content and is something I can recommend to anybody who enjoys a bit of a challenge. There is absolutely no shame in trying the casual ruleset if the player is struggling as this is definitely not as easy as the cute art lets on.
With 2.6 hrs into the game so far, I can already tell Eagle Island is everything I wanted it to be and so much more!
Packed full of exciting and engaging content, Eagle Island manages to deliver an incredibly enjoyable, but yet also challenging, experience that few games manage to succeed in doing. Each area, although jam packed with dangerous enemies and obstacles, always succeeds in feeling unique and keeps you coming back no matter how many times it takes you to get through!
One of the highlights for me of playing this game is the large amount of runes, creatures and abilities you will face on your journey. Managing which runes you want to use, and using them to tackle situations you may otherwise struggle with, adds a very fun Roguelike element to the game that fits so perfectly. If a certain enemy or boss is bothering you, attempting a different strategy with the runes, or your feather based abilities may just be the change of tide you need! The enemies and bosses themselves all feel very individual and carefully developed, and learning their patterns and behaviours in order to overcome them is an experience I wish more games had instead of just mindless player targeting.
Eagle Island's soundtrack enhances the gameplay experience even further, with beautiful and relaxing tunes that blend seamlessly into intense boss music at the right moments! The soundtrack truly succeeds in creating a similar vibe to that given off in games like the Donkey Kong Country series.
One of the truly brilliant things about Eagle Island is its dedication to providing an experience that ANYONE can play, regardless of their needs or ability. The game features a large amount of helpful accessibility options that make the experience much easier for those who have specific needs, and also providing a more relaxed experience for the more casual gamer. This isn't exclusive to the casual crowd though; you can also increase the difficulty, and attempt to compete for the top speedrun slot every week among other things that add an extra challenge to the game! Eagle Island truly has something for every type of gamer.
I'm only just getting started, and have seen nowhere near all the game has to offer, but I cannot wait to make further progress and would recommend anyone who's interested in Eagle Island to seriously give it a go! You won't regret it!
