great work sad and spooky at same time!
wonderful story, wonderful soundtrack and wonderful arts
really deserve more love, sad not much people know about that visual novel
The story is interesting enough for a cheap visual novel, but the ending ruins it.
When the story is being wrapped up you think it's about to end but nooo, it goes into an epilogue that lasts about as long as the actual story of the game and it's incredibly repetitive and boring.
It goes from being a show and not tell sort of story to a never ending poorly written philosophical rant in which the author really wants to drive the point home.
I wish there was a meh option when it comes to recommendation though. it wasn't terrible, but it was disappointing.
I had just posted a review on this just a bit ago, but after some thought, I think this should only be recommended to people familiar with visual novels and have the patience to overlook the countless grammatical errors and subpar translation.
I did finish the game. In one session even. I engrossed myself in the story enough to overlook the errors. The plot had some good twists and the game kept me guessing til the end. However, there also tend to be some pretty big plot holes/unanswered questions like why it seemed like after the father was absorbed, it went straight to an elementary school instead of, for example, his previous place of work? And if it was because of the stench of negative emotion, why was everyone there so miserable?
The very end consisted of walls and walls of text that had to use metaphors to explain the majority of its concepts. Normally this style of explanation is effective, but using an analogy for every single philosophical concept gets old very quickly once you're so close to the ending.
It was difficult to initially discern how long each "chapter" would be. The first few were an acceptable length, but the last ones were incredibly long.
Also, during "the rampage of the souls part one," it cuts to a logo, then continues the story, with the scene right before being a brief glance at a future event. This leaves me to believe that was the first intended "end" to the game, but the author decided to keep going and add more. This is when the story takes a massive tone change and the writing seemed to be a lot sloppier. I understand if the author wanted to make the story more interesting or wanted a more definitive ending, but the first was just as acceptable! It left the reader to piece together what happened and draw a conclusion for themselves.
Finally, I think the thing I was most disappointed in was that even though seemingly relatable, the story barely mentions any form of belonging or acceptance. That was the tone I thought they were going for for one of the final scenes, but instead take it as another chance to spew more philosophical rambling. There's nothing wrong with wanting to belong. There's nothing wrong with yearning for acceptance or for getting emotional after being shown kindness that had been missing for so long. The subject was touched on briefly (why the snake always stared at the city at night) , but instead on going for an emotional conclusion, it just ends up being more philosophy.
Wow, that was long
TL;DR- I liked the story but the author tended to ramble and tried to fit too many ideas for one story and the amount of errors in the English translation is difficult to ignore.
Interesting story line with beautiful music. Support Hong Kong game developers!
The soundtrack is awesome even as a AAA title, never the less made be a indie game company.
This is game has potential but sadly it's grammar is horrid. It looks like it was translated from chinese to english using google translate. It's very difficult to get into the mood of the story due to the grammar.
A really detailed descriptions of the protagonist thought and the story added with the beautiful BGM makes me stick to this game to the end. Recommend it for someone who love reading. An actual horror monster that have well written backstory and acceptable explaination of the mysteries that had been laid out in the game feels so satisfying to read.
I just freaking hate this game, I mean, visual novel. I tried to get my money back, but, unfortunately, I left the game running for a few hours, so I can't call for a refund.
I can't dig into it. The story is unbelievably boring, so boring that this game was on for a five hours, and I went through only, mb, one hour of the story. Every time I try to focus on the story and read, I distract myself with making my own sprites, or with reading something else, or I just run away because of whatever reasons.
It's like a parody on Saya no Uta, only SOULS is really bad, in a bad way bad.
The main character is so DISGUSTING, miserable and egoistic. I knew that other characters took no liking in him, that's why I downloaded game in the first place. But I thought that I could like him, or story, or some interesting elements.
NO. Nothing interests me there. I tried really hard to read this... text, and I DON'T WANNA DO THIS PLEASE NO STOP IT BLK BLK BLK BLK BLK BLK
For a horror game about unspeakable evils and a hideous monster, the writing and plot were suprisingly beautiful.
5.7 hours of philosophical beauty and awesomeness for less than $8 - this is a steal - good quality at a low price.
Horrific and beautiful - 10/10.
Commended for having correct evolution concept on why apple smells good and shit smells like shit.
Haven't finished it though, but so far so good.
Edit: I just finished this game. It is a masterpiece. Amazing BGM as well as the story. The end is so touching, I didn't expect it and almost cried. I love the ending bgm so much that I bought the bgm too. Thank you Team Fork for creating such an high quality visual novel! I truely didn't expect it would be this good. Add oil, Hong Kong game developers!
The novel strikes me not only by its appealing story lines and beautiful music, but the thought-provoking philosophy in it . At the outset I have expected it to be a light and amusing story on how a boy interacted with a monster, but it turns out that it is loaded with philosophical thoughts of the author who sees and perceives the world in his very special way. I do not need to agree to all of them but they do inspire me to see the world from another perspective. Look forward to a Part II, if there is.
An exotic visual novel
If you like visual novel and you want to try something different, give it a shot.
At some point, I thought I had an idea what is going to happen, but it turns out that the story is more creative than I thought.
So I am reminding you (if you are trying this game), don't put it down too early.
The spotlight is on the story, so don't expect a collection of CGs.
In terms of style, it reminds me some of the visual novels in the 90s.
You will find pictures in styles, but afterall they are used in a proper way.
Plus, BGMs are very nice.
Fascinating Story +1
Great Music +1
This game is visualizing my emotion!!!!! :D
I will recommend this one if you wanna try or you are really addicted to visual novel game~
An intriguing visual novel that has its unique favour.
Advantage:
(1) Very special story and touching ending.
(2) Great music.
(3) Movie-style performance
Disadvantages:
(1) The image graphic could be better, but acceptable.
Such a great story experience that I decided to write my first steam review for this.
Pros
- a thought-provoking story with horror and adventure content. The developer/ author somehow made me think those philosophical problems with the characters as the story progresses, and that’s what I cannot find on the other games.
- innovative design of the monster "Human Snake"
- music was beyond what I would expect on an indie game
Cons
- Character graphic could have been better, although it didn’t very much affect me from enjoying the story itself
Recommend to give it a try for just a few bucks.
