Possibly the worst play controls I've seen on any game on Steam. Cannot emphasize this enough.
For some reason a lot of reviews compare this to Zelda 2. This is nothing like Zelda 2 -- not the graphics, not the oddly linear progression, and not the levels, which are repeatable left-to-right time challenges plopped on the map.
There are frankly a lot of glowing comments in these reviews that do not line up with actual gameplay -- at least not what I found playing the game.
And of all the games to have a crazy EULA, too... ugh. Really recommend avoiding this one, even if it's on sale.
I only played the game for an hour, so i don't know about the entire game, but man is it annoying. Controls are really clunky, enemies are exceptionally annoying to fight as this game features the thing i hate absolutaly the most in games, and that's the inability to move around while attacking. If you try to attack your stupid little guy gets stuck in place and performs his slow-ass poke, and then stands there for another good half second before you can move again. And that's a problem when most enemies are either running straight for you or shoot you. and if it is running at you, and you accidentally miss the enemy because your sword reaches at max an inch in front of you, then you're screwed and get hit, as you didn't stun the enemy. Making attacking extremely punishing, which is kinda stupid, at least in my opinion. I know I'm being harsh, but this is just how i feel about the game.
A great game that not only captures the feeling of classic third-generation games such as Zelda 2, but truly *understands* what made them so great yet recognizes their shortcomings (mostly their inclusion of lives and one-use items - I.E. things that give a game a "struggling to survive" feeling, which doesn't feel appropriate for the kind of game this wants to be) and thus improves on them. A perfect example that shows you don't always need a gimmick to make a good game; re-perfection of the fundamentals can be more than enough. Honestly, it makes me consider developing a "fundamental but well-executed" game myself...
The pixel art looked good, Other than that the game itself lacked content (npcs are question marks) it is extremely overpriced. (at most id pay 5$ for this but its priced at 10$) and what really kills it is the incredibly gimmicky gameplay.
It heavily relied on off-screen gameplay (like predicting when an iron zombie would be far away from the cliffs edge in purple cave despite having an utlrawide monitor) Getting hit 10x in a row because of stuff you can't control way to often. And enemies that generally don't have a startup animation (at least not one thats easy enough to learn. In short this game needs a lot of work, or a price reduction.
After beating the game I would like to note that it was slightly less gimmicky then i let on, but due to the high price and lack of content in some areas (again such as shopkeepers) i would still not recommend this. If it where a lower price (about 5$) though i think the game would be worth getting.
Still on my first playthrough on insane, but REALLY liking this game.
PROS:
-Great music and SFX
-Art style fits perfectly
-Beautiful parallax backgrounds
-Great map system equipped with fast travel, and indicators of whether or not you beat an area
-Good equipment / levelling system
-perfectly balanced combat, between being simple and tough while remaining fair. Never really feel cheated on death
-Decent item system with weight load and /slightly/ varying playstyles
-UI is straightforward creating a good UX
-Built for speedrunning which is a cool feature, though you don't need to speedrun if its not your style!
-Fun and replayable
-Nice variety of levels (regular, cave, graveyard, garrison, boss, etc) each with their own environments and tunes
-Ability to replay levels for better scores / find secrets / collect coins
-Controller support! (though you have to have your controller on before the game starts)
-Got it on sale for like 80% off, was def worth it
CONS:
-Sword is shorter / smaller than hitbox, making it tricky / awkward to line up attacks
-Bosses lack diversity and seem to only have one strategy to beat them, which can be very frustrating to figure out, along with odd trigger boxes causing them to sometime not move or act at all
overall, pretty entertaining pixel game.
good game, has that special zelda ii nes look and play.
i bought it at a discount 90% off only 0.81 euro. bargain -
wishlist it if you are unsure you want it and buy it later
when there is a sale !
Extremely smooth and nice gameplay. Easy to start and difficult to master. The whole gaming experience was nice and combat, leveling up system is nicely packed.
Its a fun game to start out with, but it proceeds to throw some complete bullshit at you over and progress slows to a crawl. plus you cant bind anything to your mouse, so u basically have to use the arrow keys. Overall it was fun to start out with, but you just hit a brick wall and cant make any progress. Also, some of the enemies cant be damaged, and especially the ghouls, who can just chase you down through walls. I played on easy mode, and its still a pain in the dick to play. Hitboxes are janky, the enemies are melded from pure bs, and the coin system is not very good. This game has legitimately just made me an extremely unhappy person.
It's a fun retro type game with a basic design and decent sound/music.
If you happen to see this game at 90% off like I did, I'd recommend picking it up!
very good side scrolling/zelda retro game. control works fine (xbox suported). as your character level up you can choose which stat to increase, 4 different difficulty to choose depending on your skill level, different weapon/armor to equip depending on the situation (enemy or boss your fighting). boss fight are interesting but lack diversity
Rush to Adventure is an 8-bit oooldschool 2d platformer where you play as a hero who has to save the land from an evil warlock. Beat it in 4.5 hours royally taking my time using a controller (You can beat it in less than 90 minutes if you don't care about your final grade). Difficulty is Moderate and there are harder difficulties available.
- Graphics. Look at those solid, 8-bit graphics right there. You can clearly feel the heart that went into those killer frogs and mushrooms.
- Gameplay. Pretty basic, but it gets the job done. The sword goes Swoosh. The Jumping's all Pah! The abilities you learn are easy to figure out. Took me a little to get use to purple armor, and swap in and out of it at random. My only real quip is the range of the sword is tiny and you have to get right in the face of enemies to hit them properly.
- There are Golems! They come in a variety of colors! Sadly there's isn't any variety in their attacks and they can be beaten the same way... But there are other bosses, too! :D
- The music does its job in glorious retro fashion
- The map is just the right size. Not too big, and not too little. There's also a button for easy access to the different parts of it so you don't have to run around everywhere. The map also keeps track of areas you've already aced and ones you still need to explore. Both useful and functional. I wish more games had a map this functional.
- This is a perfect game if you just want to play something quick.
- This is also an awesome game if you are crazy OCD with getting everything perfect, because there are plenty of achievements for that.
Over all: Rush to Adventure is pretty solid little game if you're deeply craving something retro and lack an NES. It does the thing with the sword slashing and the jumping with some fireballs, snakes, and stuff. There's even replay value in speed running, acing all the levels, or collecting everything. That said, there also isn't much variety in half the bosses, the plot is lackluster, and some of the levels are very short. I don't know if there's enough in here to quantify 10 bucks, but I can see the heart that's behind it all. I really had fun playing. Props to that! :D
It's good. It's hard to remember what to do if you leave the game and come back but I really don't prefer it when games just have an arrow that points to exactly what you should do at any given moment either.
Level design is good. Monster design is good. Equipment progression/level ups are good. It's good.
So far a decent little action-RPG that runs perfectly with Proton on my ChromeBook running GalliumOS with the keyboard and trackpad. This is an RPG reminiscent of the Legend of Zelda as you free an island from a curse by finishing the levels. Each level you get graded so there's plenty replayability.
I discovered this game because I downloaded the free version on OUYA. At £1.79 I thought the full game would be worth purchase which it is so far, though I wouldn't pay the full £7.19 for it. Sorry!
I've also added this to my curator group OUYA Preservation which aims to list all OUYA games that can also be bought on Steam.
I had played the demo for this way back when it first came out. I was excited to play the full game but the price was a bit steep IMO for what you get.
Got this during the Summer Sale for 75% off and I played through it. It had more hours of content than I would have thought (although still in the small-ish category for modern games which I am fine with). At this price point, I consider it completely worth the money.
Pros:
Cute game with retro charm
Surprisingly addicting
Fast travel
Ability to redo levels to clear out gold / xp
Cons:
Controls are not responsive enough to predictably do some of the maneuvers required at the end. Dev was too ambitious and some things were only done with pure luck
Some questionable design decisions at the end. It is one thing to make something "hard" but it's another to make it impossible. (Example: Having enemies who do not throw projectiles until you jump into mid air and cannot avoid it)
Inability to gain enough strength to equip the best of everything. You have to choose at the end between the best sword and the best shield. (Armor is non-negotiable since you need the enhanced jumping capability to have a chance)
I did beat the game and I had a fun time doing it. This is a pretty good indie game that I recommend at 50% or more discounted. It has a few flaws but is still a very solid indie title with evidence of love and effort put in by the developer.
I can't suggest this if you've already got thousands of games in your library and having difficult locating the ones you want to play, before you die, through all of the shovelware.
This is an amateur title and very minimalistic but the developer has demonstrated they have the basic idea down. Assuming the developer is probably in Jr. High and not asking much for this game to start with I don't want to discourage a good effort or ambition and therefore I'm adding another thumbs but I seriously wish Steam would open a site called 'Steam Shovel' and move all of the kiddy-bopper Gamemaker games to it as it's very hard to discern what to take seriously nowadays since even big development houses are using retro graphics.
Everything about this game screams quality:
- tight, interesting and fun controls - I love how you have to time your attacks so that your shield is ready to block projectiles.
- good difficulty progression
- interesting enemies that you need to study the movement patterns to beat
- great NES pixel graphics
- great audio
I can understand why this took the developer 5 years to make. It is a labour of love.
I think that this is a very underated game, and I highly recommend it.
I wanted to start off by saying the developer is asking for people to review this game. This shows great confidence and the ability to accept constructive feedback is so rare. I would like to play it some more and leave a more detailed review, but for now here is what ive got.
So far this game for its price is great. It has speedrunning potential that is reminescent to classic games I grew up with as a child. The controls are precise/tight and the challange involved is well recieved. Armor/ weapons/ stats are a bit plain, however straightforward enough to be reasonable. I will update once I get further in, but so far its an entertaining game.
This is an extremely well done game. Developed by one man over a period of 5 years from what I have read. And believe me that really shows. Everything is very well polished and it just feels very good.
PLEASE don't let the (very well done!) pixel art make you think this is just a quickly thrown together game. That is not the case at all (that's generally those 3D games that use free assets! LOL). What you are seeing is the result of I am sure hundreds of hours spent on just graphics work alone. All done from scratch.
With that out of the way... the game looks very good. You have to really experience it in action because I believe the screenshots don't quite do it justice. It is very colorful and just very visually interesting. Everything is quite detailed in fact.
More importantly than just "looks"... the game feels very well balanced. It is so obvious the developer spent many hours and iterations play-testing and tweaking everything to near perfection. It feels GOOD. It feels RIGHT.
Everything is well polished starting with the simple title sequence the way the options and other "windows" in the game appear to the way the enemies telegraph their attacks and so forth.
Really it is just an outstanding game and MUCH better than many other games I have played. It is an easy to play hard (well takes time) to master kind of game. You actually gain experience and levels. And then you can power up one of 4 different attributes of your character. I don't want to spoil the surprises but I will say you can also find places to learn new skills such as new attacks.
Give the game a try and I think you will easily be able to see the care and attention to detail put into it. Clearly this is a true labor of love and not just another dev trying to "get rich quick".
If your like me and like a fun clean platforming experience that will will challenge you on higher difficulty levels. Look no further than Rush to Adventure.
Think supermario + zelda 2 and your really close to what you can expect from Rush to Adventure.
Get ready to get your ass handed to you if your like me and will fight for the perfect rating on all stages :D
It a lot of fun and i know for a fact that there is content here for more than the 10 euro asking prize.
Try it out and tell your friends.
A nice little game with nice music. Smooth controls (only tried with my keyboard so far)
Easy to replay a level if you miss some coins or some Exp. Or if you just want to get a better rank.
But be ready to die. A lot..
