Fantastic game. Starts slow, and the weapons can feel a bit off, but give it time and you'll get into a groove you seldom get from most FPS games. It gets crazier with each map. Definitely worth multiple playthroughs!
Cannot recommend enough.
Rating: 6/7
Planet gun good. Moon man bad.
Recently replayed it and it's still just as fun as the first time. Defs worth playing, imo.
Only problem I have with this game is some of the weapons are better than others and there's no downside to only using that weapon I feel like you should be forced to use other weapons and be creative with what you have and not use the same weapon over and over. 8/10
One of the coolest Quake-likes I've ever played. I don't think I ever dreamed of witnessing wizard brutality like this.
Great design, smooth game play, and definitely worth the price.
A literal quake/doom (1993) clone but warlocks and magic. Mechanically feels like a quake clone should, and overall pretty fun to play...when it doesn't crash every 10 minutes; apparently resetting your computer helps.
There's enough weapon and enemy variety to at least make it interesting; lots of mobs that are essentially re-skins across levels, and you pick up on certain trends/tricks fairly early on, which gives it some level of strategic thinking; eg staff for flyers, scimitar for mobs, trident for hitscan/getting a chain lightning kill, etc. If you've played Doom before, the weapons themselves will otherwise be fairly familiar; fireball = rocket launcher, mace = shotgun, aeternum = BFG. $20 is very much worth the price, but it goes on sale as well.
Concerns: There are clearly long-standing performance issues with the game; even running a 3080, there were some areas that caused my game to tank in frames without ray-tracing on. The game made the decision to hide the hardest difficulty in the game in the starting hub area as if it were some kind of easter egg; not sure how I feel about that, but even at the higher difficulty, I don't think the game goes far enough in terms of throwing different mobs at you and limiting the number of pickups so as to make you prioritize using certain weapons in a given situation. For some people that's fine, and the game's not "forcing you to play a certain way", but for others it makes the game loop less interesting. Have not tried the DLC, so can't comment on how good TBL is, but I hesitate to pick up a DLC for over half the base game's cost.
Like Heretic, but you know where to go. Old school game on a modern engine, story according to Carmack's textbook, more action, less puzzles with running around the level and pressing buttons, the game is short enough to get boring. I liked it.
This is a fun 'boomer' style shooter. Has some similar elements with other games but definitely enough to set itself apart too.
Most level design is fantastic, great architecture and lighting. Weapon designs are fun and go well together. Enemies are cool. Soundtrack is both moody and bumping. Player movement is quick and solid, reminiscent of the old days.
With the DLC I 100%'d this in about 20 hours. Definitely worth getting both.
Triumph of style over substance.
As much as I love oldschool and boomer shooters, and played many of them, this is the first one that didn’t click with me that much.
6/10, or a 7/10 if you include Black Labyrinth which has a much more interesting level design.
The levels look great but there’s a sort of emptiness to them. There's also a certain level of lack of polish to the levels - if there are secrets in a shooter I'm always going for 100% enemies killed and all secrets found, and during secret hunting I found places with misaligned textures, missing textures or places where I could look outside the map with my head. Overall map design looks kinda rushed here and there in some places, like deadlines were knocking at devs doors or something. Also - if you put secrets in your levels and expect the player to look for them all over the place, NEVER use invisible walls. You want me to thoroughly explore or not? Make up your mind.
Combat initially feels good but after a short while when the wow factor wears off you begin to realize that both movement and combat mechanics are very simple and basic, and it doesn't require that much skill at all. Same thing with enemy behaviour. I finished the game on the highest difficulty and the only times I died was from platforming elements gone wrong or a couple of boss fights that involved 'bullet hell' type of situations. Now I understand that all this might be due to the inspirations for this game - Hexen, Heretic and such, and both of those games are actually the only 90's fps games that I never liked.
Phenomenal soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult, absolute banger.
Soul mode feels like a massively wasted potential. The idea is great – you charge up the soul mode to unleash a massive beast mode / damage boost to rip through massive groups of enemies... Yeah, the problem is those massive groups never come, most of the time you fight maybe up to 10 enemies so I ended up saving the soul mode for boss fights.
Abstract, trippy enemy design in certain levels is pretty annoying and makes ‘reading’ them quite difficult.
Little to no story at all, and the occasional ancient enigmatic verses you find throughout the levels are not something I would call “lore”.
Overall I’m giving a positive review because despite the flaws and the game-doesn’t-click-with-me thing Amid Evil definitely does not deserve a thumbs down.
very good i love everything about the design of this game. the music is good but i feel like some classic heavy metal would go well with it just like doom lol. also, i personally really like the font, what is this font? i want it for my metal logo / album covers lol
Super cool, great fps
Great new retro game. All the fun and feel of Quake, Hexen and Heretic. Classic look, fun levels and oodles of enemies on each level. For added bonus type in aeurp during gameplay for extra fun.
Pro:
Fun combat with cool weapons
Complex but not confusing level design
Precise controls
Nice nostalgic graphics
Con:
You have to wait a moment before you can load again after you died
The Soundtrack is good but is too calm and gets lost in the action
It's a great game and a call back to 90s run and gun games.... Though sadly AMD drivers make it unplayable since it recently updated... I had to roll back my drivers and it's a shame that AMD would do this.
Overall, just not great imo. Random bullshit will kill you, the areas are confusing, I don't like the art style or music direction, the weapons aren't super fun to use, and the final boss is a let down. If you are a huge fan of classic quake, you'll likely think this game is pretty good, so still check it out if you fall into that category.
really fun boomer shooter make sure you find the hidden evil difficulty in the lobby for the most fun
More quake than doom in the boomer shooter but solid recommend. 8/10
It is exactly what I expected when watching the screenshots/gameplay vids - not that good :) The graphics are worse than original Heretic's, because they don't have soul. The level design is completely uninspired. Enemy design is uninspired. In general killing the enemies is not very satisfying. I think one of the negative reviews saying this feels more like a technical demo is pretty on-point.
Now a bit about the good parts - weapons are nice. I like mace, which is basically a shotgun :) I like sword, which shoots fun projectiles. Music actually is good. Which kinda sux :), because when playing this game, I am like "imagine the whole game would be as good as the music".
EDIT: Thanks for my first Jester award ever! I am so happy that I will give a free advice: If you want to know how proper evolution of 90s shooters looks like, play Serious Sam - The Second Encounter. (Probably the best shooter I have ever played.) Amid Evil on the other hand, despite of what is written on the publisher's Steam profile, is just a cashgrab.
Badass and unique modern FPS
Amid Evil is a refreshing, unique, creative, and incredibly fun take on modern FPS games. Levels are massive, yet brilliantly designed and loaded with colour. Every area of the games is totally different and the game encourages you to constantly switch between weapons, which are all unique and very creative. This game's aesthetic and its atmosphere are something else. There's a clear intent to make the game somewhat ridiculous, but it is restrained just enough to keep the experience from becoming laughable. Everything feels like it is designed to be as cool as possible and give you this badass feeling. It obviously has massive old school roots, but it never overly relies on this. If I had to name one thing I was not a fan of it's the boss battles. I often felt like their attacks were very difficult to dodge, while the battles were still too easy as I would just spam my most powerful attacks.
Unique aesthetic, satisfying gameplay, crazy cool design, I could go on. The list of reasons why you should play Amid Evil is honestly too long and you're honestly best off playing it for yourself.
JUST F*CKING PLAY IT!
9.3/10, amazing game
The level design and gameplay is immaculate, the weapons are unique and feel good to use. The enemies and enemy variety are great, but the bosses are a bit lacking. The game also looks beautiful with all ray tracing settings on. Would recommend
TLDR: Well worth your time and money.
An absolutely amazing experience Calling it a 'retro-shooter' is an over-simplification, but it does carry elements of Hexen/Heretic and Quake very well. Each level has a story behind it told in cryptic, yet daunting, haunting scripts, with master-craft enemy and environmental design, very much like New Blood does with the story of DUSK, with a little more for players to chew on since each level has its own story of a historic downfall, how it came to be corrupted.
The game-play is fantastic, engaging, and fun. Puzzles are simple, although I got lost a few times, but in the games defense, I get lost easily and it happens for me in every game. The weapons are fun to use, they also feel punchy, and powerful. Even the water staff. I was NEVER bored, or had tried to speed through a level I didn't like, every stage is unique, interesting, and fun.
Buy it. It's worth your cash, lucre, gil, gald, munny, pieces of eight, bits, and money. ;-)
GUGGIDUH GUG GUGGIDUH GUG GUH GUGGIDA
A spiritual successor to Hexen, this is a great boomer shooter. I love the art style and some of the levels are actually gorgeous and impressive, each world having a distinct personality. It's not all roses though...
Every weapon has its use and feels distinct. The mace, for example, is some sort of crystal harpoon shotgun and it's very satisfying to pin enemies to walls. The rocket launcher actually launches miniaturized planets, but feels pretty underwhelming for such a cool concept. No weapon shines in every context and that's good design, but I feel if the fire rates were upped a little and enemies took 1 or 2 shots less to die, the whole arsenal would feel amazing. As it is some weapons I almost never use (looking at you, shock trident).
The soul power mechanic alters weapon behavior, not just the damage, but the attacks themselves. Unfortunately you can't cancel it once started and any souls you pick while it's active extend the duration rather than fill the bar for the next use. Also, even if you have a full bar you'll still collect souls, which is a waste. So you might kill a tricky mob and have to wait a few seconds for it to end, collect the souls and then move on, killing the pacing. If those 2 points were modified, soul power would be so much more tactical. I rarely use it because it's so wasteful and I never know when I'm gonna need and not have it *shrugs*
The graphics were one of the reasons I took so long to try this game. Not because they're retro, but because they often are hard to read. In combat I often couldn't read what the hell was happening on screen: enemies mixing with the environment because of the weird palette or the excessive effects preventing me from seeing and avoiding attacks.
The game often feels cheap in the sense that you get jumped by hordes of enemies after a disorienting teleport or are put in a tight corridor an enemy showers with projectiles. I mean, it makes sense to attack me when I'm at an disadvantage, but what this achieves is only pushing me to abuse save scumming. The game abuses platforms that lead to your death and, what bothers me the most, loves to do this on boss arenas.
The last chapter is the equivalent boomer shooter of your girlfriend asking if you'd still love her if she was a worm. And then she transforms in the most annoying worm ever. Disorienting maps, barely readable environments, hard to see enemies... everything that annoyed me in previous chapters but was tolerable because it was intermixed with the good stuff, but now the good stuff is gone. If a player is considering just running past enemies in a boomer shooter you know you lost them. The final boss was a good fight though!
I realize this might sound overtly negative and why the hell am I still recommending the game, but what is good in Amid Evil is THAT good. Even with all I've written, I still think it's a worthwhile game, just like Hexen and Heretic were back in the day. They also had their share of quirks and problems, but still managed to become beloved classics. Amid Evil doesn't manage to reach such lofty heights, but maybe it just came in the wrong time.
I was told this would be entertaining. I played the original heretic and it is a great game. Nuance - engagement and interesting to explore.
This game: Amid Evil...is none of those things. After playing for an hour and endlessly killing the same enemies....with underwhelming weapons. I gave up on this thing. It's almost like a huge tech demo for an engine that has weak gameplay. Why are these modern games so boring to play ?
Super cool! Fast paced with lots to kill
A beautiful game, feels great, also pretty much for all ages
Good ol' fashioned FPS playability...no microtransactions, NFTs or other bull**** from modern games today.

Summary
I really think I'd love AMID EVIL even more if unfortunately it didn't bother my head. Visually it causes me a bit of mental stress and pain, but the gameplay slaps so hard I push through. The issue is the knowledge that it does mess with my head, cuz it creates a barrier between me and launching the game. I really enjoyed my time with it, but I am unfortunately weak.
Damn I love New Blood but this game really didn't click for me. All the weapons and monsters are kinda boring and everything just kinda felt slapped together, even though I know this obviously took a lot of passion and work to make. People seem to like it so it's probably just a me thing tho.
The main campaign does feel a little drawn out, and I wish the axe and the purple mana weapon felt more viable to use. I ended up [final boss cheesing trickt] spamming the final boss with the blue staff because I found one soul mode charge of that weapon can remove like 70% of the boss's health..
However, the Black Labyrinth DLC knocks it out of the park. The gauntlets are a joy to use and feel good, with great sound design and animations around them, and the overall level design feels better thought out as well. Also you can punch gigantic things to create holes to move to the next area or other stuff, and I'd recommend playing it for that alone.
Yes and yes.
Wanna play it but now just get "Update Failed" and "Disk Write error".
Only game I've had this issue with and assuming it's because of the most recent update.
I finally upgraded and was able to experience this game with RT on full blast.
Most incredible retro styled fps I have ever played. The 3rd chapter is incredible, maybe the most beautiful lighting and color palette I have ever seen.
The enemy variety is very good, challenging as well.
Lengthy, especially if you like to explore for secrets.
I have been completely captivated by this game.
11/10. Whispers Edge is your friend.
I liked this game enough that I’m about to buy the expansion!
good game i love new blood
An amazing and well built, game that while fair and challenging throughout most of the journey, does have a rather sharp and unexpected difficulty spike towards the end, even on the easier difficultlies
It's like quake/heretic/hexen, some of the guns suck buuut the good ones feel really good! Unique enemies and locations each episode... just a fun time (:
good boomer shooter
I personally prefer it over Dusk. A great homage to Quake, and dare I say it's better in some ways (having a boss at the end of each world/section for starters, and not just on the first world/section). Impressive enemy variety. Only one, maybe two levels that seemed a bit on the weak side compared to the others, but those weak levels are not terrible by any means. Most fun I've had with an FPS in a long time.
If you're to play this game at all, I strongly recommend Evil difficulty. I started on Hard, that wasn't really doing it for me challenge-wise (I think I only died once going through 4 levels). Then I find out about the secret Evil difficulty area that you can access in the same difficulty-selection room, tried that out, and it felt like the way the game was intended to be played. Because without that, I could probably beat the game just using the axe. On Evil, now I have some very good reasons to be using the ranged weaponry.
I can take as much time as I please to explore each level, but know that around every corner there could be a horde of enemies ready to destroy me, so I need to stay alert, like any dungeon crawler. Combine that with the classic combat from Doom/Quake, and you have Amid Evil. Epic boss fights that are truly satisfying to overcome. Beautiful art direction. The music sets the mood perfectly.
very fun magic flavored fps
Not quite Hexen but as fun as Hexen if remade today with RTX thrown into the mix adding that extra layer of shiny graphics on top of its retro style. Really enjoyed the game, truly a retrofps so do not expect much spoken story / characters and so on, we are in a pre-half life era looking at Hexen and Heretic as inspiration.
Weapons are fun, enemies are quite different and levels are nicely designed.
We need more science-fantasy retro-shooters. This game scratches an itch I can't find anywhere else.
It succeeds in reminding one of Heretic. The problem is the levels are much too big. There is no story so there is no motivation to continue in light of the "retro" aethetic of the game. Killing monsters isn't satisfying and the environments are more trippy than solid.
It took me two years to get through this game. It's just not really interesting at all.
Pretty cool boomer shooter with flashy art, old-school level design, and hordes of enemies to blow away.
Not quite compelling enough to fully capture my attention, but worth it if on sale.
funnn
Excellent boomer shooter with phenomenal level design. Highly recommended if you're into old school fps games.
Very fun
QUAKE, but high fantasy.
Good game.
