"Band of Outlaws" is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere.
This badly made platformer is less than 30 minutes, which is 30 minutes too long for crapware of such poor quality. I mean.. it's not an asset flip, because the game assets are so awful no self respecting asset creator would publish them.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. They're clunky, too, the jankiest, and wholly unsatisfying to use.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs.
A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", Indy Lion Studios has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
"Band of Outlaws" has the total ripoff price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Fantastic game for the price
Pretty fun game. It's fairly short, you can beat the game in a mere hour, however that hour is densely packed with fun levels, secrets, and boss fights. The core gameplay loop is shoot fast moving projectiles to defeat enemies, get gold, and of course, stay alive. Some elements are lacking, the sound of the jump made me mute my computer and put music on on my phone, but the visual elements. I would say that the closest thing I've played to this game is Shovel Knight, which this game can be compared to not just from themes, but the aesthetics and gameplay.
Overall, worth a buy if you're looking for a quick game to download and play if you're craving something different from your usuals, especially if you catch it on a sale.
I Played This Game Before Release At A Gaming Tourment And A Convension, Loved It Both Times. I Was Able To Beat The Game In 20 Or So Minutes. For The Price It Offers A Fun And Enjoyable Content Which I Would Highly Recommend To New And Old School Players.
Band of Outlaws is a simple 2D action platformer. You jump across several different stages in order to fight a boss at the end whilst shooting enemies in your path (very mega man esque). This game is pretty short, but it can be replayed over and over if you want to put a speedrun aspect into it, or if you didn't pick up all the collectables throughout your first playthrough. The multiplayer is even pretty well done, it works like a deathmatch between the players and turned out to be a lot more fun than I anticipated. It's definitely worth the $5 the developer is asking.
As someone who both enjoys side-scrollers and loves Robin Hood, I really enjoyed this game. As soon as I saw the Fox Hood skin option I was desperate to unlock it (hitting my nostalgia there). It was a pretty short game; I totaled about an hour and 20 minutes of playtime by the time I completed the final boss, though that includes some backtracking after the game crashed.
I had a bit of trouble figuring out the controls at first. WASD and Space were intiutive, but it took me forever to figure out that you use the arrow keys to shoot your arrows. There was nowhere to look up key bindings, so I was just poking at different keys for a while.
The graphics and music are bright and fun, and the controls handle well. The levels have plenty of baddies to shoot (some with more spite than others- lookin' at you, OWLS) and lots of money bags to loot, while the bosses offer a nice challenge. I expect to play through the game again in the near future, and consider my money well-spent.
