Snake Charmer - TPS Snek is a is a really badly made ripoff of Snake/Tron from the 1980s, with low poly blocky snakes and otherwise terrible assets. I'm not sure how much, if any, of this is asset flipped, maybe it's just a genuinely bad game, but that's also one of the reasons we don't like asset flips... they don't have any value as real games. And neither does this. You move the snake around a square or hex grid and that's about it... the hex layout is the only "innovation" here, and the rest of this is a valueless mess. I mean, the Nokia snake game from the 1990's was better than this. And there's hundreds of free Snake/Tron style arcade games you can play for free on Steam or in a web browser. But they want you to pay money for this train wreck.
The game is very simplistic, small and limited in scope and ambition. This feels more like a tech demo, proof of concept or student homework assignment rather than a fully fledged product designed for PC gamers. As such it doesn't offer any real value as a serious PC game.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. The only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Snake Charmer - TPS Snek is relatively cheap at $4 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
It looks like a cool snake game in the trailer...
Its not' Something about the quick camera movement every time you turn your snake makes it hard to focus on the actual snake. The collisions also feel cheap and unfair because you'll feel like you crash "before you crash".
Dev.. maybe try make the camera turn slower and not snapping as fast as the snake turns or zooming out some to make the camera not so disorienting and obnoxious as the player plays this game. I feel like this "could" be a good, fun game with more work. Right now it just feels cheap and unpolished.
VERDICT: 30% - Definitely NOT worth $5 USD as is. Maybe try it if you get it on sale for 49 or 99 cents.
