DISCLOSURES:
Not sure why it says 7 minutes unless time spent in offline mode wasn't counted. I played for over an hour total on 3 separate instances. Also, I know this developer from other games and his YouTube channel. One can look through my Steam friends and reviews and see at least 2 instances of not recommended titles, if not more.
BRIEF REVIEW:
The graphics, art design, and sound / music are what I'd call polished amateurism: it's clear that the bulk of the sound and graphic design was done by the author, but there's definitely marked improvement over time with his various games. Some will love it, some will hate it. Personally, I don't mind it at all. It adds a bit of personality to the title and it's clear what everything is supposed to be.
The controls are responsive. The only issues I had with keyboard or gamepad was forgetting how to properly control an Asteroids-like game. The upgrades make sense. The boss fights offer a challenge but nothing too easy or unfair. While an hour is not enough time for one who is quite terrible at Asteroid-like games to judge the game's stat balancing in it's totality, everything early on seems to be well-balanced. Nothing OP, nothing worthless, and nothing too difficult / easy.
It's a GameMaker 2D classic arcade Asteroids-like game that's well done within the limitations of that engine and style of game. Definitely the best of the ZaxtorGames catalog. Recommend!
I think my previous review was too dumb, so I deceide to rewrite it.
I like asteroids and it's one of my favorite games. It's a game about carefully managing the ship's movements and shooting wisely to survive. I especially like Asteroid deluxe which made the original more challenging and fast phased, so I looked for something similar in steam store.
This game looked quite promising on the store page as the game offered many colorful contents, but once I bought and played it I was disappointed by the controls. For someone who played Asteroids in Atari vault a lot, the rotating speed in this game was so slow that it was beyond the acceptable level. Fortunately The developer improved the controls, but there are still other bits I don't like :
1. I can't manually fire the bullets by tapping the button. one of the joys of asteroids was rapidly fireing bullets at big asteroids to destroy them faster and then carefully shooting bullets one by one to destroy small asteroids around me. that kinds of joy doesn't exist here as I can't shoot faster than it's automatic firing speed.
2. lack of frequent saucer encounters. In asteroids The saucers appeared in all levels. they fly from left to right or vise versa and shoot the bullets. what make saucers special is that they also can shoot and be destroyed by the asteroids. sometimes you can use asteroids to take cover from the saucer shots, and you can keep many asteroids floating around to make saucers harder to survive. Also the small saucers (or all saucers in deluxe) calculate the player's movement and location and fire the bullet based on it. so you must frequently move around to avoid their shots. In my opinion saucers are what made asteroids really fun and addictive and I really hate when asteroid clones don't have any saucers.
while this game does have saucer style enemy, It doesn't make frequent encounters to make the game hot enough and there's no smaller varient that shoot the anticipated shot at the player.
3. Hard rocks mode. This mode plays quite different, The screen isn't wrapped around and the player controls differently. problem is that I can't understand the logic of the controls in this mode. At first glance I thought the controls work like cinematronics' Rip Off or Armor Attack, where movement direction is tied to the player's facing direction and can't move to side by thrusting and rotating the ship around. however, it seems when the player's movement is slower than the certain value suddenly the movement direction isn't tied to the facing direction anymore. also the thrust speed in this mode is way too fast that it's nearly uncontrollable, and rotating the ship while moving in light speed decreses its speed which i can't understand why. My assume is that the developer intentionally made the controls harder for more challenge, but in my opinion it just feels broken and doesn't make the gameplay more challenging but rather annoying.
It's not a bad game by any means but definitely it's not my cup of tea.
To the developer, I'm Sorry for writing the terrible, rude review before. I should have played it more to decide I actually like it or not but I was too impatient and kept complaining.
This game takes me back to my childhood. I think it was inspired by my second favorite arcade game Astroids by Atari. Rock 'N Roll has the same feel but eanough differences to make it unique. I really enjoy the boss battles like the giant astroids . Im looking forward to many hours of this game I can't recomend it enough.
Much has changed since I last played, so I took an hour out of my day to replay and re-review this game. First of all I'd like to thank you Zaxtor for actually reading my review and responding professionally.
First of all the tutorial section is quite good and skims over most of the games mechanics without making it boring. You are given free reign to do what you'd like as you fly around, not that there is much to do, but being able to learn the controls is nice.
The tutorial voice overs were personally a bit cringey but fit for a younger audience, and work well for that audience. The only real issue I have with the tutorial is that the AI should disappear when the ET power-up is removed, but this isn't really a major flaw just a personal preference and the 60 FPS thing. I'm not sure if it was a joke as it was said so seriously, but just a heads up if it was serious, we can see over 60 fps and I would very much recommend a max frame-rate in the game of 120 - 200 (maybe a slider can assist with this). The AI in the beginning of the tutorial was a great way to assist players as well as displaying that they can use this character within the game. The explanation for the multiple earths blowing up was also a cool way to show that its not just one earth being spammed across the screen and add a bit of story to the game.
The explanation of the UI is done very well even though the UI is still very poorly designed, I feel as though it could do with an overhaul, maybe use Spacewar or Asteroids as a reference to this as their HUD's worked really well, but I do understand that the UI is advanced and you can't really just throw it about, still a single or gradient color would be much nicer and easier on the eyes.
The quick mention of the Galactic Update Centre and what it does was handy and a very nice way to introduce an upgrade system without forcing players to go through it or listen to you talk at length about upgrades. I also like that you added audio sliders and a quick skip to the introduction, made the games start-up much more bearable.
The flashing pick-ups are a great addition and made the ores and other objects much more visible, this made differentiating between them much easier and I was able to play without accidentally slamming into rocks, which was good.
Although I still feel as though this game could do with a few fixes. As I have mentioned the UI needs a single color or gradient color and the text needs to be a little clearer in my opinion. Alongside this an option to be able to skip the earths blowing up would be nice but apart from that good job updating everything.
This game is truly a lot of fun! It's a blast from the past! It's like a more advanced version of the kickass games I used to play as a kid in the arcade! It's definitely worth the price. I used to spend WAY more on quarters on the arcade machines every time I'd die... (Which was A LOT!) lol
I'd definitely pick it up. Totally worth it!
great game i wish more arcade games would be expanded on
Incredible old-school arcade game for just a small price of 3$ (CAD)
Rock n' Roll sets you up in a simplistic design with a really hard time learning how to master the games mechanics. The games about trying to save the people you love by trying to smash some asteroids and aliens with a slithery giant space snake assisting them in this top down, classic arcade, space shooter. The game is excellently coded with 1-2 little scratches from a developer who made this game on their own. The music and funny voiced lines, and text such as when you're being shot out of a cannon was comical. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys a flashback to any style arcade machine-made game.
