Not even remotely close to what I expected to get for the price. Had $5 games that had 10x more work and effort put in.
The humour is good and gives a unique feel to the game. +
The interface is lacking and very unintuitive. Even has forced 'watch' time. -
Multiplayer works, which is good. Couch co-op IS the place to use or take advantage of humour and cheap gameplay. +
The cheap or limited gameplay is not cheap. Plays like a $2 game but costs $20. -
You can revive each other in game. +
Lack of explanation or requirements for revival and special abilities. -
If the 'creator', actually finished making the game and halved the price it would double the sales. If they set the game at $5, finished it, and also expanded the content, they coudl have been a new game company.
Basically another overpriced waste.
Fix the @#$% menu interface, and shorten the compulsory vid section while at it.
Create some kind of interaction for revive and make special abilities more prominent.
Make 'rare' Llamas bigger and have big boss Llama's every couple of levels.
Add alternate areas like farms and stuff.
This whole thing stinks of potential, stymied and wasted by someone who has big dreams, but isn't willing to put the effort in.
Imagine if instead of 3 weeks (Or whatever it is), the creator/s spent two years to make this the best it could be.
Not saying it would boom like minecraft, but it could have been something.
Too disappointed to even feel ripped off.
So I played this game way back maybe in 2017 and I added it to my wishlist in 2018. I've been hoping I could catch it on sale, but this game rarely goes on sale, and when it does, I'm broke. Yesterday, I bought it full price, and it is so worth it. It's not easy, but it is so fun! Just enjoy it for what it is!

I liked the idea of this game and was looking forward to playing it, but after giving it multiple tries I've decided to refund. It's just not a very fun twin-stick shooter.
It should be mentioned that I only played this solo. It feels like the game was designed with co-op in mind, but the only option is local, no online support, so I couldn't try it.
There's some strange design choices that really kill the fun, like how there's no way to gain back health when you're guaranteed to take at least a few hits every level. There's a "Transfusion" life steal perk but it doesn't seem to work at all, I was never regaining health when killing enemies.
There are abilities that should help with not taking hits, like the shield and jump/slam attack, but you can only use them 2-3 times before you're completely out of energy, and energy doesn't automatically regenerate, you have to kill llamas with car explosions to get more, or does it just have a random chance to drop from kills? I couldn't tell, but either way it takes too long to get energy back for how fast it can be used up.
It's also a pretty buggy game. The tutorial is broken, you can't complete it. I found mentions of this years ago in the forum but it was never fixed. You're also supposed to get a challenge in each level, which when completed gives you a perk (the only way to get perks), but they never show up. In my handful of runs, I've never gotten a challenge or perk past the very first one.
On top of that, there's an insane amount of chromatic aberration around the whole screen, it was a major eyestrain.
It feels like the game is close to being a fun twin-stick shooter, but the issues mentioned above mean I don't feel that I can recommend this game. There are many other better options in this genre.
Bought this on sale for about 7 bucks, but even that seems too much for what this is.
This plays like it should be on an app store, since it plays closer to those than anything good on the Steam store.
You get a couple weapons, but from what I can tell, it's just about killing llamas.
The jokes aren't funny. They're stupid and you're smacked in the face immediately with political crap. I'm not here for that.
The presentation is not particularly enticing and the couple minutes of gameplay is pathetic.
Overall, it's not a bad game, it just needs a lot more polish.
Re-do the mechs so that they can walk over stuff like cars and smaller stuff, add more variety to the gameplay other than just running around shooting llamas, and take out the stupid jokes, all of 'em. Matter of fact, take out the entire expository intro and just say, "You'll be killing llamas."
Also decrease the price by more than half. Fourteen dollars for this is quite excessive for what it is.
It's fun for a bit, but it doesn't have the depth to hold your attention. I understand why the creators opted for local-only multiplayer, but I think it does the game a massive disservice. My friends and I use games to stay connected since we don't have the time we used to to get together. When we do get together, things like this are far down on the list of how we want to spend our time. Even as someone that followed this game during its development I can't recommend it if it doesn't have an online multiplayer.
I don't like this game very much.
It has a fun concept, and is very self-aware of it's cheesy humor. Visually, it looks nice, but it is a bit repetitive (more on that later).
The shooting is just meh. You have two guns to manage, so the aiming is slightly "off" since the weapons aim slightly to the left/right of where you are aiming. The weapons themselves are fun, and using them a certain amount unlocks new options. You have pistols, machine guns, lasers, freeze rays, missiles (some homing), grenades, etc. Good stuff. There is even a hose, which basically just keeps the llamas at bay. The whole setup is ripe for creating an effective "build" of two weapons. However, every weapon requires reloads, and the reload time is often an eternity. Personally, I'm not a fan of the reloading (as it exists).
The worst is the fact that the llamas are faster than you, it's nearly impossible to kite and shoot them. In some of the more claustrophobic environments it can really be a pain.
My biggest issue is that the moment to moment movement and shooting just don't feel good.
You do have a dash, a slam (which is great), and a shield. The dash is kind of limp, and while it can kill llamas, it isn't very effective. On top of that, they all use energy, which drops from killed enemies. I feel like they've increased the drop rate, but it's just another annoyance IMHO. I would rather have had cooldowns. Plus, when you have the shield active, you can't pick up energy. Sometimes the effect persists for a bit after you turn it off (or so it seems), which is especially annoying.
You also have a single health bar (no health pickups) and you get perks from time to time. The droprate was all over the place and none really felt like game changers. There are unlocks here, so perhaps the good stuff is later.
My last session ended in a lab area. I was supposed to find a scientist? I think, and it was even pointed out to me. However, the area you're in was bland and everything was samey hallways and I had no clue where to go. I was low on health, and the white llamas on the white floor were chipping me down. I eventually succumbed to the llamapocalypse after running out of energy with my shield. I did not feel like going for another run.
There are more zones after the first, but I haven't seen them.
Some people may enjoy the pace, I don't think I do. Maybe it's better in co-op, but you'll need some friends and controllers.
EDIT:
Gave it another shot. Controller is much better. The lab is a piece of shit maze. Everthing looks the same and it just doesn't make any goddamn sense. It reminds me of the sewer maze in Fester's Quest, only worse.
I think I finally found the exit, but I was spent. Cramped, llamas shitting out of every door and hole, and that stupid announcer lady screaming "Forget about the llamas!!" "Hurry Up". What the fuck do you think I'm trying to do?
you guys srsly need to work on your weapon types and the core shooter flow. there is no gameplay around regening your HP and so far the weapon types are quite dull. the flow of the game just gets a bit obstructed by the fact that the only way to regen energy is to kill and there is no way to regen hp (at the start atleast).
also your default controls are not so comfortable (I didnt use dash at all since it is on middle mouse button - how do you expect me to fire from both weapons and press the 2nd mouse button?) Yeah - i could change my weapon controls - but having bad default weapon controls is not a great idea.
also you should work on your aiming controls - you have a limited distance you can draw your cursor and that fells really off and so far the default mouse sensitivity feels RLY uncomfortable, add that to the fact that the camera rolls around like mad (yeah it looks funky at start, but later starts to get annoying)
the llama theme and the pun density setting rly made my day. at first it was cringy af, but after 10 minutes i got hooked.
visuals are nice. not the problem spot of the game.
if you want any detailed tips on twin-stick top-down game design you can pm me. i happened to work on a twin stick shooter myself atm and could share some insight.
10/10 solid game, pure llama slaughter satisfaction. There's nothing that hits my llama murdering needs like this game. Every person who believes llamas are pure evil will get their tinfoil hats after playing this game for 10 minutes. Let the llama murder commence #llamanatiMustFall
Game is original, give it that. The puns, good lord the puns...
Now. take this and make a kickbutt brutal mech shmup sans the Llamas por favor?
It's a fun game. It's also very difficult. Even in casual I struggled to progress through the game. And I recently beat Nioh and Dark Souls 3 and...
you blow up llamas with random weapons and they bite metal pieces and your mech blows up, its fun and funny
Fun game, well done for an indie game. Good graphics and sound, fun to play and quite challenging. Those llamas are driving me craaazy
It's not bad. A fun little Rogue-Lite top-down shooter. Gameplay is serviceable. The cutscene at the start is absolute cringe, but I think that's the point.
My problem is that in a world with so many amazing games at the sub 20 dollar price point offering fantastic replay value (Slay the Spire and Dungreed come to mind) it's hard to say that I would recommend this game. There are just a lot of better games to spend 13-20 bucks on.
That's less a knock on these devs and their product and more a statement of how great current indie games have been. Additionally, that's coming from someone who used to think Indie devs were eroding the expected quality of products.
Btw, Steam, Give us a judge based on your own taste in games button. I like Rogue-Like's but am meh on top-down-shooters. If you're super into top-down shooters this might be your jam.
It's a great game if you wanna sit down for 10 minutes and just forget the world.
Theres no deep storyline to keep track of, no complicated controls to memorize etc.
Just sit down, blow up some llamas and have some fun.
My partner and I enjoyed the snot out of this last night.
A few recommendations though:
Its very hard and there is no way to regain health once you lost it. Maybe make a few different difficulty modes?
When you drop a gun and pick up a new one, theres no way to switch back to the old gun. I often pick up a new gun (which I hate) and then I completely lost the old gun.
Overall I definitely recommend this game!
VALA(Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse), only going to say that part once, is a "twin stick" shooter, can also be played with keyboard and mouse. Im a pretty good gamer, for what its worth, and while the game is deffinately difficult, it also comes down a little bit to luck on what drops, and what good combinations you can make, some guns are...good? but some have issues like plasma going over their heads, and grenade bounces doing exactly that. Game is fun and the room style smash tv ish and directions give you a choice of upgrades sometimes.
possible SPOILER ALERT!
7 hours in and I have already beaten the game, it was a fun ride but i felt some things were missing, the final fight might be buggy, llamas didnt coume out till halfway through, never saw the final llama, where the heck is it? Would have been nice to see some boss llamas, was really hoping for a 4th act, but infinity mode is nice, but it doesnt offer challenges to finish my collection of stuff. It would also have been nice to have different objectives other than kill llamas, or kill llama spawners, maybe capture a point? or defend an object(other than that 1 turret in that 1 map)? or perhaps race to the end.
I never knew killing Llama's could be so fun. Better drop out of school so that I can become a pro.
Take control of a miniture Titan, purging mutant warp spawned llamas in the name of our glorius Emperor of Mankind. This twin stick shooter has everything a Warhammer 40k fan could ask for... Bolters, Flamers, Kraken missles, even Helfrost weaponry... it's so rare to see that in a 40k game though.
Though it's not too high on content, it is VERY fun, and that is enough.
To me, Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse was what Tesla Vs. Lovecraft should have been. Yes, they are different games at the core, but let me explain.
What I like about VALA is that it's a modernized twin-stick wave fighter. It's 'room' based and not necessarily wave based. This slight nuance means all the difference. It doesn't feel so 'dumb' and thoughtless. It also has rogueish elements that add a nice layer of complexity to help combat the braindead act of fighting waves. The humor and polish are great (seriously, those llama puns are nuts). We have four player local co-op. We have metagame unlockables that make you stronger over time and add more variety. And most of all - it's really fun and addicting. Sometimes I even do runs just for the fun of it, and not necessarily with any particular goal in mind.
The only downsides I can mention are that I wish it could run on a toaster, and I'm not sure how long the whole game is by looking at unlocks. I will also mention that this game is difficult. Where Tesla Vs. Lovecraft had issues with the begining game being super easy and the endgame impossible, VALA seems to have a consistent 'rogue' standard of difficulty. You will struggle. Thankfully there is a nice layer of strategy available with regards to hoarde management. That's what will keep me playing.
Pros:
+Fantastic humor and polish
+Great twin-stick hoarde management strategy with satisfying abilities (using that stomp at just the right moment!)
+Fresh hybrid of twinstick wave fighter with room-based rogueish elements
+The metagame unlock system is refreshing and fun; it forces you to constantly try new weapons
+While I'm not sure how much content there is - it seems to merit the asking price
+Four player local play would be bananas
Cons:
-Won't run on a toaster
-Get ready to struggle
I'm pleasantly surprised with VALA. From early videos, I almost decided to not pick this up last minute. Glad I did. I think it's worth full price.
Edit: Now That I've Beaten It Faster Than Expected Edition
Disclaimer - Get this when it's on a good sale.
==========
VALA is a slick dual-stick shooter that comes as advertised, and the goofy we're-idiot-college-roommates humor works fine on the side considering all your gametime is almost solely invested in murdering entire small countries worth of llamas. Really the sort of thing I haven't played since Smash TV back when most people reading this review weren't even born or were busy filling diapers.
I have no doubt this would be amazing couch co-op for we're-idiot-college-roommates, but for god's sake I got this on Steam and it'd be really swell if I could give the creators more of my paycheck and tax return money by shilling out gift copies for friends who will never play this with me anyway if it had online multiplayer. Just saying.
TL;DR - I didn't mean to go past 2 hours of played time so I could refund it but here we are.
See curator page for more reviews.
Not worth the asking price. Game doesn't introduces anything new to the genre or doesn't improves upon anything. What is done here was done better by other titles.
Very small enemy type pool, map/environment is boring, weapon system unlock is annoying as it forces you to use weak weapons/weapons you don't like to unlock something stronger. Weapons are unbalanced, laser is much weaker than preceding freeze ray. Drop system seems to be broken, perks barely drop at all, for weapons it seems to prioritise weaker ones, also sometimes dropping same weapons few times in a row. AI seems to be pretty dumb, if there is a little open space it is rather easy to kite enemies. I have seem them also get stuck trying to walk through bus.
Unless the game forces you to grind for better weapons in later stages, it seems that experienced players can complete it in just few hours.
While couch co-op is fun it's not always available, really needs to also have a "host" option, direct connect via IP or connect through steam or something option. Still reccomend, the puns are fantastic, the funs are fun, and i love the references to Llamas with Hats and Contra.
