RPG Maker strikes again!
Catacombs 1: Demon War is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker and various character creator kits, coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction.
As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development.
This time Andorlea/Warfare/SimProse/whatever other shell account this guy uses to try hide his identity has once more stamped out a painfully generic copy + paste RPG Maker asset flip. It's horribly basic, riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, full of stock copy + pasted RPG Maker assets... no real game development has taken place here, this is just a cash grab, it's shovelware polluting Steam for profit. This "developer" has dumped over 100 copy+pasted RPG Maker asset flips onto Steam, and keeps pumping out minimum viable product RPG Maker asset flips as rapidly as possible to try gouge gamers. OVER 100 RPG MAKER ASSET FLIPS.
We must ask why this ongoing pollution has any serious value for gamers or the gaming industry. This kind of cash grab construction kit shovelware from bad actors like Andorlea gives amateur developers a bad name. This pollution takes marketing space away from genuine indie developers who are doing the right thing, and making real games instead of copying+pasting premade assets in a children's video game construction kit. It makes it harder for gamers to find genuinely made games. This pollution is harmful to Steam, to gamers and the gaming industry.
Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 5 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Catacombs 1: Demon War is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
wish there was more levles to play
This is the 2nd RPG Maker Game for this Dev! This one is much better Then Cavern of Time! I love the story all together. I love the voice Acting in this game i wish he did that in The Cavern of time This game had more story to it then Cavern of Time! So with that point He improved his story telling of the 2 games. The maping is little good to, but there more improving he can do in the games. At lest it did not cost money to save which is Very good in my eyes. The side missons are very nice little story to them. I love the start of the game where you have all the shops in one place. In Cavern of TIme they are in different locations. I was lvl 7 at the end of the game and it took like 1 hr and 52 mins to beat. At the ending text i had a but where i press SHIFT but it did not go to the next screen. I had to keep pressing Shift and Enter to get it to go to the next screen after i kept press for a little bit. The ending of this game is a good plot twist, and i love how it ended. I can not wait to see his next installment for this story in the next game which i hope is Catacombs 2 soon. This game came out in 2017 and it 2021 and I hope he make the next part of the story asap. Is this game repayable i say yes. I enjoyed playing this game then i did Cavern of Time that why i will give it 7.5 out of 10. Can not wait to play his next RPG Maker game and see how well he been improved while makeing them.
Catacombs is an interesting game with a lot of neat elements and a tense battle system. I'm not gonna beat around the bush here. These are the Pros and Cons
Pros:
-Very Strategic RPG battle system that has a lot of quirks. You must always pay attention to your HP and MP to survive every fight.
-Characters, a bunch of side people who have cool textures.
-Simplistic and Direct, no overarching story, nothing crazy, throws you right into the game, It's a lot of fun and stays away from being too grindy.
-Cool settings and level design
-Neat little side quests and in-game achievements for extra XP
-Armor and Weapon break mechanic
Cons:
-Grid system hitboxes are a little off for some enemies
-No auto-battle button
-No Steam Achievements
-Low sound effect variety and quality
-Glitch where if your female companion uses magic, she uses the same sound effect as the guy using magic
-You can walk into NPCs instead of clicking near them
-Low caliber music (pretty basic and repetitive)
-Empty World Syndrome. Tons of cabinets and drawers but none of them give items or even say they are empty when the models clearly show stuff on them.
I think this game is more impressive with the combat over everything else. The world is kinda weird and feels slightly off as you are playing. I only played for about an hour but I will continue to play and I will update this review accordingly the more I play. Overall 5/10. Average, but could be a lot better.
BAD things:
1) VERY short - about 3 hours
2) VERY bugged and glitchy engine
3) NOT intuitive interface: bad item management. Also hard to understand stat-system before you reach 1 lvl and spent first stat-points.
Good Things:
1) Hard and randoomised, many variables - Is the most I like in this game. Is A VERY Huge plus. This is what is missing in modern games.
2) Good music.
A HUGE 3 minuses doesn't beat 2 pluses - NOT reccommend
I think I picked this up for less then $2.00. Its short but keeps your interest and will watch for the sequel to it. Lots of items.
Just finished the game.
It is short as is stated and contains around 15 screens in total. I thought the story was totally ok and the writing was surprisingly good. There is a lot of variety in monster types and combats are quite nicely executed. The game - while not hard when I discovered I can flee from combats - was hardest in the beginning and I ended tha game at level 5.
The only thing which got more frustrating was that the further you got the further you had to retrace your steps back to town to heal and buy spells. But that was somewhat mitigated by the fact that you could pick up town portal scrolls and also carry a lot of healing potions but most importantly escape combats with good success.
The game is extremely linear though but the levelling is fun which gives you 4 stat points to spend. Items is interesting and looting is fun. Overall well worth the money and definetely on sale. It is said chapter 2 will be released early 2018 (still waiting) and you can then transfer the save.
While I had a good time from my 3 hour experience, it doesn't mean that this game is at least an average game. The only thing I loved about this game is the setting, the grim mood it creates and its music. Everything else is probably quite trashy.
This is an interesting game. Or at least, the beginning of an interesting game. The first of three chapters of a larger story, Catacombs 1 has different graphics than most RPGMaker games. Or maybe I'm just not used to something other than 8 or 16-bit figures... anyway, the game seems simple enough, and the plot is at least engaging in the beginning.
At the right price the game is alright... Retro graphics and animations with a decent chapter 1 story. I may see where this leads (for the right price)
So I got this game when it went on sale for $0.89, and I still don't think it was worth it. The controls are glitchy at best. The story is what you would expect from a cheap title, so no complaints there. The gameplay itself seems repeditive and a little outdated. If it wasn't for the controls thing, I'd say the sale price would be fair.
Really not much of a game. It seems targeted at the 9-12 age range. Simplistic graphics. Combat is mediocre at best. Weapons and armor are little more than temporary buffs for the characters. There is little to draw the player into the game or to keep his attention once he begins playing.
I might give this to my pre-adolescent nephew or niece; if I had a pre-adolescent nephew or niece. Since I haven't I won't.
I paid 90 cents for this gem. Neat little RPG lots of randomized weapons and drops. I hope that the next two might propose a little less random for drops and a harder difficulty curve. I love getting strong gear but when a rat drops me something that gives me 16 power..... that a little overkill. I do recommend this game. Has geat potential. Sort of reminded me of Castle of the Winds
you dont get a very long game at all...and at the end of lvl 4 dungeon you beat the beast and it just ends....its just not very good at all for 5.00 game ...for .99 it might be ok...dont waist your money on this...there are much much better games out there for it.....
A quick to finish partial game. Mechanics were different from what I was used to, but once I got used to them, everything flowed fairly smoothly. Not a lot of replay value. No choices, really, except whether or not to add a 2nd party member and divide your experience points. I found I was running low on mana potions and the market didn't resupply them. As the drops and encounters will be different each playthrough, that would be a reason to retry it. The best part I found was
the comparison between new equipment and equippep items was automatic, making those decisions easier.
I said partial because apparantly there will be two more installments to this item; hopefully as DLCs where you continue the story, rather than start all over from base level. At $5 USD (4.99) its not a bad buy.
UPDATE: After this review and the following discussion, the developer quickly released an update to fix the balancing problems. So essentially, I've been paying 5 bucks to be his beta tester, thank you very much. The update fixes some of the problems, but not all of them; at least, you can't get through the game by simply spamming the same two attacks forever. We'll see what the future holds.

TL;DR: Don't spend money on this. It has like 2 hours of playtime, most of it boring grind.
As the imaginative title "Catacombs 1: Demon War" implies, this is a wannabe. It's as if a ten-year-old had written a story named "War of the Stars" or "Master of the Ring" and were incredibly proud of it. Learning by repetition. The "novel-quality writing" is a veritable mountain of clichéd expressions and "plot twists" that are telegraphed with a hammer. The setup with the locked dungeon, the side quests (collecting vegetables for a random guy in a locked dungeon... yeah, sure), nothing makes any sense whatsoever.
On the gameplay side, most of it consists of the usual RPGMaker grind against invisible random encounters, plus a bunch of fixed visible boss encounters. Since the creator has zero idea of game balance, all of this is just laughably boring. For instance, there's a spell that costs a handful of mana and has a chance of 70% to instantly slay each and every enemy. Why exactly should I bother with anything else?
On the positive side, the creator has invested heavily in assets (Pioneer Valley tilesets, custom music which is actually pretty nice), and the few ounces of voice acting are also fine. But that's really not enough to overcome the completely primitive and broken game design. I'd advise the creator to take a look at the RPGMaker game design forums; there are some people there who could get him up to speed, so that the solid presentation will get a valid gameplay foundation to rest on.
Great little Turn based RPG that has many features and items. Game is a little short, (I haven't finished yet) but definitely a great value for the $5 asking price. Many Weapons, armor and items to equip and use, there is also items that help with permanent stat increase above the normal leveling system. Turn based combat is smooth and easy to use. Combat at times appears to be a little easy but then you get into larger enemies and multiple enemies and it balances out. There is a nice magic system that has over a dozen spells to help in combat, which can be learned from an in town NPC. Lots of quests in all the areas to achieve and explore. Also has voice overs for cut scenes to help build the story.
All in all its a great little game for the price and the thing that impresses me the most is the developer seems to really care about his game and is very responsive to suggestions and problems.
Sounds like Achievements and trading cards are coming. Game has achievements in game at this time..
This is a fun game if u like turn based rpg im going to buy the next chapters for sure
