Updating a classic provides a better than nostalgic way to the play the game, but at the core many of the features are just a bit to aged to be recommend today.
Cannot get the game to load anymore
Just bought the game. Will not load.
additive and down to earth 2d game
This game is proof that rock- solid game design can outlast the passage of time.
It may have updated graphics yes but the design is still untouched- and even manages to show up a lot of modern games
Loved the original from many years ago. Unfortunately this product is unstable and locks up prior to actual game play, in the tutorial, and when starting a new game. Realistically not playable.
Even locks up when exiting game.
And no. This product would not be difficult for my hardware.
Too bad. Had hopes for this one.
Elevator pitch: "80-era strategy arcade game. It's like chess but with goblins, wizards, spells and such. To take a piece you have to beat it in one-on-one combat."
Let me start out by saying I'm heavily biased by playing Archon heavily on the C-64 many years ago.
This game lives up to my memories and then goes well beyond. It is loaded with game modes and features I would have killed for. 4 player offline local multiplayer in team or FFA modes. Don't like other people in your home? That's fine. Additional players are a click away with multiple levels of AI skill and aggression. They added multiple single-player campaigns. Full information about all of your troops. Optional secondary attacks and skills for your troops. And, of course, you can be a purist and play the original game as Freefall originally designed.
That's the good. NOW for the bad.
The game is old, son. This release from 2010 has bugs and is no longer developer-supported. It does NOT play well with Windows 10 (don't know about 11) and , certain graphics cards (NVIDIA apparently). I nearly refunded the game because whenever I tried to launch the game, it would just hang and crash (Win 10 + NVIDIA). To get around this, I have to run it in windowed mode (set in your launch properties and add a -w or -windowed).
Although you can play keyboard, controllers are highly recommended. I personally use a Dualsense controller which, of course, isn't completely supported. It works fine, but the in-game control mapping will reference things like "button1" or "button8" instead of a X or a Δ.
So, if you're haven't been scared away and find the game concept intriguing, give it a go.
Nostalgia be damned. Ages ago on the ol' NES this game was a lot of fun to play with. It had a certain charm I suppose, and the ability for your "chess" pieces to fight for the squares they controlled, which different pieces having their own strengths and weaknesses, was for me a novel idea. I loved it. Years later I see this on Steam and just had to have it. Tried playing it and the disappointment set in pretty quick.
The responsiveness of the controls feels... off. Perhaps that's just an aspect of using a KB+Mouse (I'm not able to use a controller in my old age), however I don't believe so. It feels somehow sluggish, it would definitely be improved by actually making use of the mouse in combat, but that's not something they attempted to address with their remaster.
For some reason, neither the classic nor the modern style of pieces look like the original. Perhaps they didn't have rights to use that stuff? Don't know, but combined with the sluggish controls, either of the styles puts a kibosh on the nostalgia.
I did not try the "Conquest Mode" which seems to have a sort of world map that you can march around and conquer, but honestly if I'm not enjoying the basic combat side of the game, why would I want to explore stuff that uses that but adds more layers?
Too much effort was put into "updating" the game to have a new feel or whatever, not enough effort was put into actually making sure those updates improved anything. The controls were always a lil touchy in the original, but your character could turn on a dime and dodge, if you were quick enough and paying attention. In this version of the game, you really can't.
I would have rather had a turned based version of the combat, with dice rolls, than this half-assed attempt at a remaster.
Wow, this game is buggy. Takes so long to load up I thought I was back on the C64. All it was missing was the disk drive sounds. This game has crashed twice so far: once during a tutorial(!), and once while trying to select game options(!!).
Bonus: website archonclassic.com parked for free by GoDaddy! Classy.
C'mon guys. This game ran better in 1983.
Fun Fact: you can play the original for free over at: https://archive.org/details/msdos_Archon_1984
Fun Fact: it runs better than Archon:Classic
I was looking for an updated graphics version of Archon because I liked the atari 800 version. Luckily although it isnt very clear, you can set it to the original rules and board with no extra abilities or level ups as well as having the old more pixelated models.
Classic mode really does *not* feel like the original game. I still have the old Nintendo version emulated on my DS and am able to easily compare.
Archon is perhaps one of the best computer games from the 80s. Don't believe me? Play it on a Commodore 64 emulator. While it's nice to have a remake on the PC it could have been so much better. Still worth playing though if you are a fan of the original.
Archon is my favourite C64 game and one of my favourite games of all time. This re-release is a tasteful remaster with both original and improved graphics and tons of new modes adding more content for fans of the original arcade battle/chess hybrid.
The last time I played Archon was on my c64 in the 80s . I love that one of the graphic modes is the classic . Archon itself is an awesome game that sorta is a fantasy version of chess. It has been awhile since I played the original but I do love this. It does seem to simplify some things and offers a few different modes . It looks like there was suppose to be another Archon game after this remake but something must of happened. If you have a a way to play the original then go for it but otherwose this is an awesome modernize version of a classic
Excellent remake of a classic. This is made even better with secondary attacks for most of the pieces. This mixed with three and four player mode (with humans or AI - Team battles), all on gamepads, makes for an excellent couch co-op game on top of the robust campaign.
Despite never having owned a Commodore C64 myself, I spent many hours playing the great original ARCHON with either the neighbour's ginger daughter or that slightly annoying Irish-German girl down the street. Both of them prefered to play the evil side, and so it was always a great pleasure for me to pierce their evil sorceress with my trusty unicorn.
Unfortunately I am out of touch with both my late 80s playmates, but as far as I've heard they still seem to prefer the dark side, having joined the police force (+8 Imprison spell). Too bad, since this faithful adaptation and overall surprisingly good game still allows for some sweaty and intense close-combat two-player melee action, just like back in the day.
Loving it. It is not an exact copy of the original, but honestly an upgrade. While it does take some getting used to, as a new player, it does hold some of the original quirks when doing remote play or multiplayer. I would recommend for a blast from the past.
I really wanted to like it.
I loved the old Commodore 64 version when I was a kid, but my entire combat strategy revolved around kiting, and you can't do that in this PC port. It feels like playing at high latency. If your opponent is chasing you, and you want to shoot at it, you cannot simply hit that direction key and fire. You must stop and begin running towards your opponent before you will be allowed to fire. It's only a few tenths of a second required, but by that time you're usually dead.
I think the numbers speak for themselves, don't they?
In other words, if you have someone to regularly play local (hot-seat) co-op or vs with, this game is really enjoyable.
I guess that's what makes the lack of online multiplayer so crippling for the game. I checked Steam Charts and it seems like there might be only about three people still playing.
If anyone reading this review does still play Archon:Classic, feel free to let me know. I'm genuinely curious!
If you're someone who's interested in buying this game, I'd recommend waiting a few more months. I've heard the developers of this game have been working on a new Archon, so you may want to hold onto your hard earned cash till that comes out.
Archon Classic is a game made by Archon fans for Archon fans to enjoy. I played the NES version and Archon Ultra for MS-DOS, always thinking: "This is a nice game, but imagine how cool would it be if...". No matter how that sentence finishes, Archon Classic will bring it alongside nostalgia and a modern touch.
This is a chess-like game where pieces of Light and Dark fight each other in real-time battles. Of course, most of the game’s strategy is on the board, where the turn-based portion takes place. If you’re a regular chess player, you’ll probably start thinking about openings, forks, movement block, waste of time, zugzwang and other well-known elements of chess.
If you just want to finish the game, there’re four campaigns with 15 missions each that won’t take too long to beat; one or two weekends would be enough to go through all the missions. If you like to unlock every achievement and complete 100% of game, know that Archon Classic will keep yourself busy no matter how skilled you are.
Each campaign level has three rankings (bronze, silver and gold), and it’s possible to replay all the maps with the Insane difficulty, not to mention the possibility to turn on the secondary fire mode, which adds a little more depth in the real-time battles.
Keep in mind that there isn’t online multiplayer, which is a shame considering that it’s possible to play with one or more friends on the same computer. Good luck, however, to find someone that comes to your house just to play Archon Classic in hot seat mode. I managed to twist my son’s mind and convinced him to play with me as an ally, and it was really cool beating the forces of the darkness in teamed up battles.
I’m not sure if I would recommend Archon Classic to players that never played or heard about Archon before. This is really a game dedicated to longtime fans. Every cool aspect of the previews titles is present here. Things that old Archon fans used to do, like beating the computer as fast as possible or killing his entire army with the weakest piece is funnier than ever, especially because most of these insanities are now part of the campaign.
I consider myself to be a "Retro-Technologist", meaning that I still have functional classic computer. I have a Commodore 64/128, and my copy of Archon still works on it. I bought this game, and the classic mode is pretty much perfectly done. I have done side-by-side comparisons, and can notice no flaws in the Classic verion. Even that is well worth the $9.99 price tag! Add to that, the updated version, and you're really getting a bargain at that price.
A wonderful remake of the Atari 8 bit classic Archon. Graphics and sound are fine, but it's the great gameplay that makes this game so enjoyable.
The original Archon only had one game board and no campaigns. This game has many different game boards and some interesting and challenging campaigns. I've put a lot of hours into the campaigns and more than got my moneys worth.
Dragon to E4! Archon classic is a remake of an old 80's game of the same name. The game consists of a chess like board and pieces and a turn based game built around them. When a piece is taken however, the battleground shifts to a top down 1 on 1 perspective and the pieces shoot it out in a real time battle. The pieces are a variety of fantasy monsters with unicorns, golems and a phenoix on the light side and goblins, wraiths and a dragon on the dark side and all the pieces have unique attacks to use on the battleground. The game also comes with a swathe of modes and board varients and has all the original graphics for optional use also. The classic in the game title is very apt.
Good
- fun with friends
- awesome strategy, the variety leads to some memorable battles. Sometimes a goblin will just prove unkillable and slay monster after monster
Bad
- no controller support
This game is great, genius concept, heaps of fun.
5/5
For those of you who grew up playing the original Archon, you will be glad to know this one exists. It has everything the old game did, and offers a lot of improvements. The major thing being secondary attacks. Those were first introduced in Archon Ultra, and these are somewhat similar. There is also the ability to play on different maps some are dependant upon the number of players. ( You can have 4! :D) There is the classic Archon map, maps that allow your guys to level up to level 3, and maps that have runes that provide benefits when you move onto them.
For those of you who feel the base game was fine the way it was however, and don't want all these additions. You are in luck as you have the ability to turn off the secondary abilities so it will play like the base game. In fact they even brought in the old school original Archon graphics for units, as well as updated graphics. The only drawback is the multiplayer is same computer only. No network/internet. Which hurts it IMO.
So with the advent of the steam remote play together, you can now play this game with others. But I've yet to play with anyone and not have a slight delay for those remoting in. In a game like this where split-second reaction can mean the difference between getting hit, or dodging, that is a pretty big issue. But it's still better than not having online multiplayer.
