There are 14 unique skills to upgrade with skill points, ranging from agility to firearms, hacking, hardware, voodoo. Unlock up to 80 special abilities that allow you to do things such as throw your weapon, upgrade your guns, and control the weather.
Dangers include rival tribes fighting for fertile land, mutated ghouls that emerge from their caverns at night, vicious demons that hunger for your flesh, a flooded and irradiated coastline that eats away at civilization, as well as disease, insanity, and hunger.
You will die often, and you will like it.

Modding Permissions:
You can sell your own mods for Brigand on any site you want and keep all the profit, as long as you include a link to the Brigand store page and do not include the EXE files in your download. Itch.io is a good place to sell mods. Let me know if you make one (you don't have to).

Hidden gem
I enjoy Oaxaca
I like a lot of aspects of this game, and I appreciate the vibes - it's very Stalker, with some nice old school RPG elements like the OG Fallouts.
The difficulty isn't necessarily the turn off for me - it's that the game isn't nearly as free / open world as I feel it's billed to be. At least for the full chunk I've played, you pretty much have to go along with the main narrative to progress in the world at all. You can't find your way into another faction's camp right away, you can't sneak around and access other areas - there are some characters you have to interact with or kill to progress to another small area, where you have to interact with or kill more characters to progress more.
For example, ideally, when I ditched the banana farm right away and went to thug territory, there could be some way WITHOUT advancing the chapters & plot that I can access that area. And the forced plot moments (your companions abandoning you in chapter 2, etc) take away from that agency as well.
I would not recommend, but I'll keep an eye on future stuff from this dev.
One playthrough done, and I've enjoyed it a lot. It's one of those games that when everything suddenly clicks, there is no longer any jank, but rather intricately designed mechanics that you now can exploit to a very satisfying degree. Feels open ended and like there's a ton of stuff I've missed, so I'm diving straight back in!
Great immersive sim game. It reminds a lot of the original Deus Ex but with a more crazy world and with the jank factor up to 11. The dev is very dedicated to the maintenance of the game and positive towards player feedback. This game is a prime example that even without a fancy UI, realistic graphics, complex gimmicks and detailed animations you can still make an engaging and immersive experience. Beware though this game doesn't take you by the hand it just explain things with simple messages. The real learning is made by just playing, failing and retrying until you can do or get the result that you want to get.
This is the hardest immersive sim i've ever played, it killed me hundreds of times and took far longer than I could have ever imagined to beat, yet I loved it the challenging nature of this game! it makes every accomplishment you manage feel so great. It does not ever hold your hand and expects you to die. You can probably play this game over a dozen times and still not scratch the surface of how much customization you can do for a character build there's so many abilities and powers to choose from, you will have a great time if you like games like Deus Ex or anything similar as long as you can put up with the difficulty.
Brigand is both a very fun and very not fun time depending on what you’re looking for from a video game.
Don't walk away because of the graphics: underneath that rough exterior is an excellent immersive sim that keeps me coming back for more.
Brigand: Oaxaca is set in a post-apocalyptic world, in the Mexican city of the same name. The game starts with you being framed for murder, then immediately being let out by the very people who jailed you in the first place. And so begins your journey through this wild and weird world.
Okay, let's address the elephant in the room: yes, the game is ugly. Between the PS1-level faces stuck on a mannequin head to the judicious use of an army-styled font, it feels more like a game I would have bought through a mail order in 1995.
But as I said earlier, don't let the graphics turn you around. Under that rough shell is a game full of lots of great detail and fun to be had. For example, you can follow the start of the game and protect a brewery from a bandit attack, or you can walk into the hills, meet with the bandits, and turn the table on your captors by stealing their leader's prized banana beer recipe. And then blow up the brewery.
I also really like the level-up system. Instead of an overall level, you have skills you can put points into. You gain points by doing quests and helping people out. However, to actually SPEND the points, you need to find someone who can train you. Different NPCs will have different levels to which they can train you. For example, the computer expert will happily level you to 50 on hacking, but good luck getting anywhere with strength training with him. You can also have NPCs tag along with you and train you on the go, but good luck keeping them alive.
Overall, Brigand: Oaxaca is a surprisingly deep game with lots of replay value and things to do. If you're still unsure, give the demo a whirl and see if you like it. For the price, I got a ton of enjoyment out of it, and will continue to do so.

I am too weak willed to play this game. BUT I recommend this to everyone who can handle difficulty and jank
genuinely one of the most refreshing game experiences I've had in the last 4 years and a stand out title amidst indie releases. I genuinely thought this was some 2004 cult classic with a fresh steam release but it's all entirely new content! the vibe is spot on, the graphics are peak and the gameplay systems are very specific in a good way. If you come to this having enjoyed Deus Ex, morrowind or E.Y.E. you're in for a great time !!

I've only just started playing since the random crashes have been fixed, this feels like an old school Fallout/Stalker game set in a small scale world but is packed with content similar to the Gothic games worlds. Looking forward to continuing the game further and keeping an eye on this developer's other games!

If your speech skill is high enough you just whine to every quest-giver to give you more money after completing a job. It never gets old. Very good game, I appreciate how committed the dev is to fixing any glitches quickly and for making such a large and impressive game like this.
This game has a unique setting and I think the developer is an interesting character. If you have low tolerance for difficulty just cheat in editor mode.
Existing reviews provide a good impression of Brigand: an eccentric, uncompromising, and zany dive into post-apocalyptic Mexico, swarming with demons, gunslingers and explosive, heart-attack-inducing ninjas that lurk around corners. So, if much of what can be said about this game has already been said, what's the point of this review? One word: exposure. The more this game is talked about, the better.
Brigand hasn't enjoyed the same limelight as other indie titles. Aside from a few posts on the internet, the game is hardly discussed. In the words of JC Denton: 'What a shame.' Admittedly, Brigand isn't for everyone, and at times, it was so frustrating that I considered quitting altogether. Still, in the end, I looked past its ugly exterior and was always drawn back to the deserts of Oaxaca.
This game is one of a kind, and at its current price, it’s practically a steal. It deserves more recognition. With no end to the hiatus of classic IPs like Thief and Deus Ex, I hope that more fans of the immersive sim genre discover this title. Who knows, maybe in twenty years, when the ice caps melt and the sea submerges our land, we won’t need another Deus Ex; we'll have our Brigand: Remastered.

Edit: Dev response is about the Steam Deck; I'm having this issue on desktop. Cursor shows but nothing else.
Janky, ugly, load screens drive me crazy... but irresistibly fun.
I have mainly played this on GOG. But wanted to give a review here. This is one of my favorite indie games of all time. Deus ex/system shock type game. The graphics are great if you remember playing games like this growing up. It also works flawlessly on the steam deck
It's one of those hidden gems I'd like to recommend to everyone, the kind of delight that reminds me why I love video games. Sure, it looks a bit dated in graphics and controls, but don't let that stop you. The game is full of charm and has an identity all of its own. It's full of weird ideas all over the place, and that's great. A true work of authorship. Ty so much B. Lancaster ♡

This is definitely one of the games ever. Learning curve is steep, but so is the fun factor.
Fascinatingly complex immersive sim that's beautifully jank, just like it's contemporaries. If you have any interest in the genre I definitely recommend
