Tormental misses the mark on being a Rouge-like and a Serious Sam game. As a Serious Sam game, it features a small cast of unremarkable enemies, only a few being from the main games. The rest can be summed up as cube or blob. As a Rogue-like, the aforementioned small enemy roster, the same one boss on every floor, bullet vomit, and constant bomb spam makes this very repetitive and a chore to play. The only reason why I have so much time in it is just to see the ending cuz I'm a Serious Sam fan.
It is challenging and hard and like it a lot. As every roguelike you can have a good or a bad run, if you have a good run, you can go for hours. No real meta progression in the sense that your charakter gets stronger, you unlock new weapons, etc. as you go along which then have a chance to spawn / be available during a run. Lots of charakters with different unique "powers" available, music fits.
One liners included: Don't tell the Vegans I did this!
Recommended not just for Serious Sam fans.
It's kinda bad...
I feel like I got burned by a branded game that trades on the good will of the Serious Sam name, and you get a very rudimentary, cut-corner and hollow experience.
I am not saying it's not nice in some ways, and it does have the Sam theme and some voice clips of Sam. But really this game feels extremely bare-bones in all ways (graphics, sounds, music, mechanics, controls).
The music has you wanting to deafen yourself within seconds - thankfully it transitions between scenes etc, but in combat it is utterly monotonous beyond belief. The sound really isn't much better - I don't find the tones to be harmonious or really well-designed and are flavored more like stock FX library pooky-blonky-blorky sounds. The only audio I heard that I wanted to hear were the few snappy 1-Liners from Sam at the start of each map, but most of them fell flat :/
It's hard to criticize the graphics because I somewhat knew what I was getting going in, but I didn't expect it to be quite as monotonous and lazy as it ended up. I sort of expected a little more variety in maps and bosses but everything's just kinda made of cruddy colored blocks.
In the end what turns me right off is the combination of gameplay mechanics and poor basic control.
I found Sam to be too floaty and fast, and very obvious problems exist with edge glide and in the heat of battle I often found myself impaired by a corner and when I rounded it, Sam wasn't going where my joystick was pointed, but instead ran him into spikes or somewhere other than where I was trying to go.
I appreciated that there was no real aim assist as I prefer that aiming mode, but I still honestly found it hard to aim and anticipate placement of shots. The weird blocky everything might have contributed to a perspective issue for me, IDK but maybe because the game's graphics are in a block grid but the physics aren't.
There's some crazy momentum bug where I keep losing control of Sam and it seems to cause him to take hits. A few times I got hit in battle and it seemed to stop Sam dead until I released the Joy and moved again. Then there's the "slow mo" which happens when you get hit but then you seem to partially lose control/speed which makes you walk head-first into an attack that you were desperately trying to avoid, and would have avoided without the broken slow-down.
There's a melee as well as your primary pop-gun and switchable alt-weapons. Melee is primarily used to play the meta-game which has bombs spawn and you activate them and whack them around. They could blow things up or electrify water. Spawn keys, etc. A cool idea but you can only "suggest" where the bomb goes with RStick and it seems largely random. Seems to break a big part of the intended mechanics and feels like a very badly rushed and ill-conceived "feature".
It's so hard to aim and navigate around with Sam, then there's and obscenely short timer before drops despawn. A major flaw given how wonky every darned thing is, then on top of all that jank you have to rush to get the pickups. All of it was an un-fun stressful mess.
I actually got angry at about the 45 minute point. I don't want to play this and I don't want to unlock anything.
The game is just too monotonous and bland to even time-waste on. And the mechanics they added in should have been left out if they weren't going to polish and tweak them into something worthwhile.
Not fun.
