I blew up a Tiger with sheer willpower... and 500 of my comrades
You need to have a fair amount of free time, and micro manage your troops. So far as selecting weapons for each squad member within a large RTS game.
It almost feels like too much was tried to give for the player, but it was fun for the time I played it. Just prepare to spend hours on a level. *Unless you maybe play on easy.
Alright, I'm not playing strategy games very often but this one is something else. I know engine is really old and it's little bit laggy sometimes but still it's a great experience.
this is a game that u will like
good game
good battle sim
Fun old game bought it then realized they already made a second one
I hope the person who made the "campaign" dies a horrible death
Like seriously the only reedeming quality of the AS series of men of war games is the editor
No campaign
No AI skirmish
No base building
Shit
Took me a week to complete a single campaign mission in hard difficulty, and it's not even the hardest difficulty.
11/10
Its a broken game, half the time units don't respond to commands, enemies often glitch out and don't attack, the camera is buggy and doesn't respond just the same, graphics are full of glitches with shadows glitching as you move the camera around, I'm just perplexe at the low quality of this game and the apparent enthusiasm around it. It's worse than Sudden Strike 4 and that says a lot, at least I had the patience to play 3 missions with the latter before wanting to throw my keyboard out of the window.
the best i've ever played
good game
So here's the thing I've played several Men of War games already right like the older, classic ones and I even played Faces of War which as far as I know came out even before the Men of War series truly became a thing right. In those older Men of War games I thought the difficulty get annoying at points but you could still win either by spamming shit out until you overran the enemy defenses or by getting a big enough cannon and blowing shit up from far away. Faces of War was the only one where I thought the difficulty was annoyingly stupid and felt like I had to save scum to get past the levels which is why I ended up not finishing that game and just wrote a review when I thought I was comfortable enough with it. Now here's Men of War Assault Squad and it is, for me at least, pretty much a direct copy of Faces of War.
+The graphics look wonderful. Sounds are great. Controls are great as well, easy to use. The game ran without any issues, any crashes nothing.
+3 missions each for the Americans, Germans, Commonwealth, Soviets and Japanese. Each mission even on the easy difficulty can be very challenging and can take up to an hour to beat. In the campaings generally you're just put on a map with a ton of places to capture and you're given command points with which you can buy more units. Capture more points, unlock better units, buy them, use them, capture every point on the map and win the mission. Repeat for every faction, every mission.
+Tons of units, tons of vehicles, in the classic Men of War fashion not only are you ordering your units around like a real time strategy game but you can take direct control of them as well. Bought yourself a Panther, Tiger, Sherman, some random Japanese tank, maybe a half track full on infantry, maybe one of those late war German Goliath remote detonated bombs you can just take direct control of them, drive them around, shoot whatever. You can take direct control of single infantry units as well, run around with a machine gun in your hand if you want.
+Another thing I love about the Men of War series in general is the damage models on the vehicles. Your little AT gun is up against a Tiger and you can't pen it? Just shoot its tracks and immobilize it. You're in the Tiger and you saw that AT gun? Just gun down the crew and order your own infantry to man the gun, this way you'll capture the enemy AT gun for free. You're idk in a Sherman and you fired a shell at an enemy tank aside from the tracks you can damage its gun, turret, hull, engine and obviously blow it up instantly with a well placed shot. If it hasn't suffered some serious critical damage it can be repaired and put back into action.
-In pretty much every single mission you're going up against well entrenched enemy forces with a very small army of your own. If that wasn't enough the enemy can and will call in reinforcements just like you so every now and then you'll have a sudden wave of enemy infantry charging and recapturing the points you already took some other times they'll send random tanks towards you which can cause quite the headache. Running out of points to buy more units and having your own units massacred by tons of machine guns and tanks is pretty common. Even on easy. I'm not a good player sure but holy fuck do you really have to make me run across an open field covered with 3 different heavy artillery guns, 3-4 other really damn big AT guns, infantry all over the place... I send my most heavily armored vehicle in, AT guns and the artillery fucks it up. I send the infantry in well guess what its an open field they're crossing and at the end is a bunch of sand bags, machine guns, AT guns, artillery and tons of infantry why would they ever succeed in that situation? I send both the vehicles and the infantry at the same time, combined arms warfare shit and EVERYONE dies. I'm not joking the only reason I won one of the missions is because some enemy AT and artillery pieces friendly fired each other so I got to cross the open field and capture the point with just overwhelming numbers. It was silly. This was the first mission in the German campaing. On easy. Again call me stupid if you want but fuck me this game is so hard that I failed the American training mission against the Japanese several times. I had to switch from normal to easy, fail again and THEN I won the training mission. Moved to the Japanese campaing, got fucked on the first mission. German campaing, got fucked on the first mission still won by pure luck but that should not have worked.
If it wasn't for the absurd difficulty I think I'd enjoy it a lot. I mean I still did enjoy it but definitely nowhere near as much as I could have. Winning too easily, crushing the enemy isn't fun. Losing too easily, being crushed isn't fun. It has to be in the middle where it feels like luck or a really good decision in a bad moment turned the tide you know? Thats not here, its just an uphill battle and while coming out on top does feel good after fighting against a shit ton of enemies its not the same kind of fun you'd get, not the same kind of good feeling you'd get from a better, more balanced mission right? I'm pretty sure I gave Faces of War a thumbs up which, looking back on it after a long time, was probably not a good idea. Similar to Faces of War I want to give this game a thumbs up too they were both incredibly difficult, overwhelming and annoying but the core gameplay is so cool that I wanna ignore it but I did that mistake on the Faces of War review and I feel bad about it and I think I should change it to a negative one instead so I'm gonna learn from my mistake and just give this one a negative review instead. Which isn't fair I don't think I wish I could give a mixed rating but I can't. The core gameplay is really fun and nice but the campaings feel incredibly unfair to the point where it makes the entire thing annoying. Either way negative it is, we'll see if Assault Squad 2 is any better when I someday get around to reviewing that one.
such a good game
total violence what a masterwork game
Campaign completely impossible. Number of enemies is greater than the number of your bullets, and bodies disappear instantly making it impossible to loot, enemy tanks kill your tank with one shot while your tank can't kill enemy tanks from the front.
I loved it . This franchise made me better understand ww2 as a teen .
Men of War Assault Squad is the best WW2 real-time tactics game! I've been following this game series ever since the original 'Soldiers Heroes of WW2'. When I tried the demo back then, and realized that you can take the shells out of your broken tank to load a stolen anti-tank gun, and you can scavenge the fallen bodies for weapons and ammunition, and you can take cover behind virtually everything, and you can drive tanks through buldings, I was immediately sold.
This amazing level of detail and authenticity is still present today, and it brings an immense level of control and different tactics that you can use. That comes at the expense of very much micromanagement and almost every key on the keyboard being assigned to some action. That makes it hard for newcomers to pick up, but once you memorized everything, you're going to have a blast.
The multiplayer component is a bit shaky, because it uses an old GameSpy service. That's why I have very high hopes for the upcoming Assault Squad 2, which promises to have full Steam MP integration. The developers have been listening to the community a lot and have published several free updates with lots of new content, so I trust them on this one.
What I love with this game is the realism and explosions, they're so satisfying to watch!
i like game, don't like that the resupply truck doesn't auto resupply troops or tanks but it's whatever i guess, also don't like the lack of a steam workshop...Still good game so far tho.
Just finished the base US Campaign on Heroic by myself. It took about 20 hours for the first two missions before it really clicked how to abuse the game enough to make progress. Pretend your Sherman Tank is Neo from the Matrix, its the one, it'll dodge every missile and AT shell that flies your way, as long as you keep abusing the saving and reloading. The AI doesn't understand why it can't hit my slow tank, it only goes up to 29mph in real life and yet its destroying all of it's defences without missing!
Without a doubt, one of the hardest games ive played in a long time and i just finished a variety of RTS games on hardest this year.
Play on Easy/Normal and enjoy yourself!
Old game, but still good to play, nicee!
I Love foot
best game ever
Air strike.
Probably the best rts game out there.
Why is it called Men of war and not woman of war smh
Accurate and the absolute best one in genera. It still makes me smile after years I haven't seen let alone played, the strategic thinking required to pull some things off realy held on. Exited for the second part of it...or is it?
I WOULD RECOMEND THIS GAME .BUT THE LAPTOP ITS A COMPLETE PAIN IN BUTT IF I WOULD OF KNOWN WHAT I KNOW NOW I WOULD NEVER OF CHANGED IT .CANT PLAY ALL MY OLD STEAM GAMES AND NEW ONES ON THIS LAPTOP IT JUST FREEZES PART OF THE WAY THROUGH GAME. ITS THE NEW WINDOWS ELEVEN IT JUST MAKES ME WANT SCREAM.
thumbs up
This game was great for its time, but I can not recommend buying this game because Assault Squad 2 is better in almost every way. The three things I like better about this game over the sequel are the lighting, the health bars, and the building translucency.
The lighting in the 2nd game is too bright, especially at night, by default where as I find this game's lighting just right and much more immersive. As for the health bars they change colors in this one based on how much damage your guys take starting at green, then moving to yellow, and then finally red where as in the sequel it is just a red bar, gray bar, or green bar in a smaller gray box depending on if it is an enemy, ally, or one of your units. This is personal preference, but it really made units that were close to death stand out more. Lastly, building translucency in the sequel makes buildings and anything in them completely invisible while in this one they are super transparent so you are able to make out objects inside the building that can be used for cover. You are also able to barely see the roof of the building when you get close enough which feels more immersive than having it become completely invisible.
These three things don't really make it worth purchasing this game over the sequel and you would be better off purchasing faces of war if you are looking for fun single player missions. There are also a few missions in here that are not present in the sequels, but most of the missions in this game are super repetitive and not worth getting this game for. The two bonus missions, Christmas and Barbecue, in this game are available as mods for the sequel. Assault Squad 2 also has steam workshop support and even if you factor in this game's mods, most of the older mods have already been ported to the sequel. There are not really any compelling reasons to buy this game unless you are a collector or are wanting to see how far the series has come.
.
Classic game
mantap ternyata
game really shows you what suck it up buttercup really means
I would say that unless your a OG to this game get the second MoW game. It has everything this game does and more.
This game has shut down my steam 3 times in a row. I am going to have factory reset my steam deck for another game entirely.
Great game.
Edit: wow with the difficulty turned up it feels near impossible.
Edit edit: extremely difficult on high difficulty, mainly due to having to micro manage every unit on the battlefield, including having to tell them which way to turn to face the enemy, like my tank getting shot before its even seen the enemy tank because of its tiny field of view and me not telling it exactly where the other tank is. Basically its a good game just very frustrating on higher difficulties due to brain dead AI.
