This game is great. I'm 86 hours in, and it's still a go to. Brings the old tabletop game to life in the best way. The campaign was fun, and then I just kept playing!
Played 40hr in vanilla and it was great, then I played another 100 with mods and it became one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Shoutout to all the modders and the BTA3062 community for perfecting this game.
Remember to click on every "?" icon and read the tutorial dialogues. The learning curve can be steep on higher difficulties, where this thing absolutely shines.
If you love Battletech and Mechwarrior and turnbased play this game is for you. Also has large mod community to give you lots of replayablitliy.
When the game used to work ... it requires at least the Heavy Metal DLC to be fun. Marauder 2's bug stacks with as many as you have in your Lance.... so fill your lance and enjoy a 40% chance to headshot against any mech.
Right now there is something wrong with the game and it just closes. This seems to be something with either Intel's 14th gen or recent Nvidia drivers... but it makes the game impossible to play because if it crashes in mission it doesn't have a save per turn...
Some claim it's a memory leak however..... 4080 Super - 16gb vram and 64gb quad channel DDR5 ram .... it would take a while for either vram or ram to fill up.
So outside of that... when the game worked how was it?
Well... it has ups and downs OG game sucks.... You will bleed out of cash from insanely expensive repairs/delays. You will always be out gunned and out numbered. The AI does this cheese move where they will knock one of your mechs down.... then like twenty moves later you can stand it back up.... meanwhile you knock one of their mechs over and the very next turn it stands back up.
Anyway... So the Heavy Metal DLC adds the Marauder Mech and it's beyond God Tier. It has a targeting computer that allows for a higher chance to hit a cockpit. IT STACKS....... A full Lance of Mad's gives you around 40% chance to hit... per pilot. Just keep aiming for their eye and you can then salvage complete mechs....
Good game overall. I'm not an expert at these types of games, so there was a learning curve for me personally, but I enjoyed it.
Great strategy game that has you focusing on more than just killing! You have to keep your crew happy, your mechs in good working order and the money coming in!
Currently playing through the Story and at this moment in time I can safely say, if you're a fan of in depth turn based strategy games, then this is one that you should definitely give a go!
It's quite the good and fun game, honestly.
If you want to get closer to ground with the Mechs, you really should try the MechWarrior series as well (Especially MechWarrior: Online!)
Spectacularly fun strategy mechs game without hand railing attached, either you glide gleefully or roll down the mountain painfully there is many things can go wrong! Also don't buy just the base game, buy the 3 DLC too! Because if you get addicted you'll lament the time waiting for the next discount arriving... just like me.
Feels a lot like the table game. I have lot of hours and I keep coming back to the game. The campaign is fun and challenging and the variety of mechs is enough to feel robust.
10/10 Would recommend. This game is a ton of fun! I've played pretty much every MechWarrior and MechCommander games, and can easily say it's one of my favorite!
Very nice tactical game with roguelike elements, pretty challenging, especially getting Kerensky on career mode. The main campaign is short but challenging. If you like X-Com type strategy, farming lots of missions to get better and better mechs and weapons, then this game is for you. What I really wish is that some developer would create an updated modern sequel to Mech Commander 2(2001), I really felt that was the high point of mech PC gaming, but I've sunk a lot of hours into this game as well.
BEX mod almost makes it into the game i wanted, but now the mission generation issues like extraction LZ spawning behind the recent enemy reinforcements are even more glaring.
This is one of the best games ever for Battletech, really creating a video game the reflects the tabletop experience. There have been some balance tweaks from the original tabletop game. I think they're good changes, but not everything that's true tabletop is true here.
Fun if you enjoy turn based management games with the ability to kind of build you mech... well just the load out... withing the set bounds. They really missed the mark here by not allowing you to freely build your mech like Armored core, or the ability to send you other teams to go out and complete missions without you baby sitting them. Still fun for a while. Mods help make it playable for longer. Points that I wold have liked to see include:
Better Ship and crew management: If your gonna do it might as well go all the way.
Mech building: Like I want a stupid giant headed robot that laser eyebeams things to death.
Relations with not only factions but your crew: This could be like mass effect
I could go on but im sure you get the feeling of where im going, The game is decent but not great. Mods make it good but still lacking long term. It is a fun distraction.
Good tactics, good campaign. No Direwolf though.
Vanilla game is excellent but where this game shines is the insane modding community. Some seriously amazing overhauls out there.
It is funny how almost everyone refers to Battletech as "it is similar to X-COM" or "X-COM with mechs" whatsoever. Well, Battletech comes from an old established background that I think was somewhat inspired by Frank Herbert's DUNE, rooting back to 1984 where this franchise started as a physical board game. In a way it was a predecessor of Warhammer 40K as well. So Battletech is based on a quite solid story line / universe. X-COM this or that - Battletech was first. X-COM games are in general based on a similar table game rule set, in a sort of flexible universe that includes the original designer Julian Gollop's earlier games (Rebel Star series, Laser Squad, finally X-COM) that were primarily computer games. As far as I know Battletech joined the digital realm around the late '80s in the form of a sort of RPG called BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception including a tactical layer. It was a pretty massive game for its time. Later this universe spawned the complete MechWarrior action series that we all know.
So, this one with the original title keeps its board game nature and roots. As it is a pretty deep combat simulation, it can produce some pretty tricky situations and you usually have to defeat overwhelming odds. Among tactical games I think it belongs to the harder side of the scale so it is fun. Although the missions start to be repetitive after a while, there is still a great tactical variety during combat so I think for folks who love turn-based strategies Battletech will provide a lot of good time.
So, back to the start: X-COM 1 / 2 or this one?
Well, all of them really. Appreciate that we live in a great time for gaming where you have a diverse set of games to enjoy.
For me it's a masterpiece. A casual feel , very granular. Relaxing yet the story gets the blood pumping. The combat is excellent
The base game is good for the story - for a more genuine tabletop feel go modded. I can recommend BEX (Battletech Commanders Extended 3025) and BTAU (Battletech Advanced Universe). NexusMods for BEX and bta3062 dot com for BTAU. RogueTech is another mod that is worth exploring, with the caveats that it requires a more robust computer and the gameplay can be quite a bit more harsh until you learn the systems it introduces.
Surprisinly good story. The gameplay loop is absolutely amazing. If you like tactical combined with slow progression this is a must buy.
The best version of Battletech or mechwarrior out there, i only wish they would do more into the Clan invasion and onward as this is such a great universe and it deserves all the love it gets
The game starts off fun enough, but soon it becomes nothing but a slog through long, drawn-out combats because every mech's HP pool skyrockets as you get into heavier mechs. It also feels like there are a lot of things that are just really poorly explained, and it's awful sitting through the same jumpship animation every single time you change planets-especially when you're treated to it a half dozen times when you need to make multiple jumps.
I love mechs and I love squad personalisation, what a dream come true to have a game with both. You feel right in the thick of this game's plot which is very well told, and the battles are incredibly engaging and fun.
Love the game great basis for an in depth tactical mech game for fans of the Table top and those who've never touched it. Only made better by the massively in depth modders.
Tough one to recommend depending on what you're willing to put up with.
I keep coming back to it, but every time I do it's not quite as satisfying as it should be. Every mission seems to be roughly the same in the early game, go and destroy something, which is fine except that the combat isn't great. I know it's based on the table top game but we could do with some QOL features. Hit percentages are all over the place and line of sight is very wonky. Trying to take precision shots seems to be a complete waste of time, 2% for a head shot? Does this improve later on? I've levelled some gunnery stats and it's still 2%, seems almost completely arbitrary. Also the damage and armour indicators don't work very well. Sometimes you'll blow something up with a few weak weapon hits while the armour bars still seem to have plenty of hits left. Other times you'll be firing barrages of rockets into a small enemy and it'll knock half a square off.
Turns seem to be calculated by unit speed or initiative, so you often get to move one or two units before the enemy takes a move. I guess that's how it's meant to be but I find it interrupting and frustrating, Often you'll be able to select a unit from the whole squad, take your move and then it interrupts and moves another enemy unit, with no indication this is going to happen, so it becomes pot luck and makes tactics harder to plan. I'd rather just be able to take my whole turn.
Load outs should be more fun but they're not, at least in the early game I'm in. You basically can't make any changes because either the weapon weight is way too high, or you don't have the hardpoints for them. There's too many restrictions. Everything costs money too, you can't make any changes without it costing you time and money, I get why but I feel they could have been a little more forgiving with this.
All in it's not horrible, but it follows rigid mechanics a little too closely.
The game can get a bit tedious in parts, and the 'travel' between systems is far too long, even with mods.
But in the end, it's a solid game, with a good story and a lot of replayability in the different styles of Mechs.
This is a GREAT game. But the learning curve is very steep. It takes a couple of days playing to get the hang of how targeting and firing to get a good feel of the game.
The Battletech community is a small but noble and dedicated fanbase. We did not deserve a game this good, packed this full of those tiny nods to the community that truly shows the developers, the execs, everyone involved in the project actually gave a crap about what they were making. Thank you Harebrained. Screw you, Paradox, for not seeing what you had on hand and refusing to make a sequel.
A must for any Battletech fan of any level. A must for anyone interested in exploring Battletech. A must for any turn-based strategy fans who enjoy team management, storyline, and mecha.
The story is great and engaging, both in campaign and the sandbox play. Flashpoints were an excellent addition, lets the player make their own story. You get to meet exciting heroes and legends from Battletech lore in meaningful ways.
The gameplay itself is well-balanced and is a solid port of the tabletop game streamlined for video game mechanics. Having played the tabletop, much of the strategies crossover--you'll become a better tabletop Battletech player by playing this game and learning how to get better. I especially like that the different classes of Mechs are utilized and play to their established roles. There are missions where you will need speed, you will need scouts, and balancing your force is important versus bringing the heaviest Mechs with the most guns. Though there are missions where that's what you need.
The campaign and sandbox game can both get grindy. This can be mitigated somewhat by changing the rules of mission payouts and salvage, etc. But it's good practice to repeat similar missions and learn to not just win, but win while suffering the least damage you can manage. The grind also represents the flavor of mercenary life--you're going to go through some boring periods where you just need a paycheck, punctuated by truly exciting missions with hefty payouts.
I really wish HB Schemes could make a sequel in the Clan Invasion era. Or at least new DLC. I think it would easily sell and further satisfy fans and attract new ones. There is a mod available that expands on the base game, generally well-liked, though I have not tried it.
All-in-all, if you like mecha combat, or just solid turn-based games in general, I can't recommend this game enough. Probably best to get the whole package on sale, but even not on sale I don't think you'd be disappointed.
One of my all-time favorite games, yes from nostalgia but it's just so well put together. Definitely try out a mod like BTAU when you finish vanilla!
I love this game. I wish I had tried it earlier. I hope they make another Battletech game or bring out more DLC
Battletech is a remarkable demonstration of the intricacies of strategy and leadership, set against the backdrop of a universe in turmoil. In a future where noble houses vie for supremacy, the player is thrust into the role of a commander, managing not just an army, but an entire mercenary outfit. The year 3025 may be distant, but the challenges presented are deeply familiar—resource management, tactical warfare, and the delicate balance of survival.
This game exemplifies the essence of turn-based tactics, requiring the player to think several steps ahead. The combat is layered with complexity, where your decisions on the battlefield can mean the difference between triumph and disaster. But it is not only combat where Battletech shines—it is in the management of your mercenary unit, the careful upgrading of your aging BattleMechs, and the constant need to balance your finances. These elements are as critical as the battles themselves.
The customization in Battletech is its defining feature. From designing your own BattleMechs to upgrading their components, you are given full control over your arsenal. This ability to shape your army to your strategic preferences adds depth and replayability to the experience. The game's modding community, particularly on Nexus Mods, further enhances this, allowing players to tailor their experience even more.
Battletech is a masterclass in turn-based tactics, not just in its combat mechanics but in the strategic foresight it demands from its players. It is a game that rewards careful planning and punishes reckless actions, embodying the very essence of thoughtful leadership.
It's Battletech. The big, stompy, space opera of war crimes... and this game (and story) was so good that the current IP holders went and made it canon. Not "your" or "my" play through, but the overarching story? Yup. It's canon. They even put out a handy dandy sourcebook for the TableTop players.
And when you've sucked the marrow from the base game, and the sweet aroma from all of the DLC's has faded... The spirits of Kerensky and Blake inspired others to create such beautiful MODS..
Battletech Extended... it's a Vanilla Plus. It's grand.
BTA3062 (now Universe)... Welcome to a glorious descent into multi lance and combined arms madness.
RogueTech ... Not for the faint of heart. Your actuators will crumble, your pilots will die to inferno rounds, and you will be laughing maniacally with a masochistic fervor.
You'll drop hundreds of hours into these mods.
Just a word of advice, Install all 3 sequentually... just rename your MODS to what that install is. (Example: "Mods" -> "Mods - RT" or "Mods - BTA") and just rename those to MODS when you want to swap to that mod package. (they're chonky though... more mechs than you've seen in multiple playthroughs will be thrown at you before you even start wondering about the Clans)
So yes, 9/10 vanilla (I've played the tabletop version too much, the mechlab needed a little more love for me), 20/10 with the mods, and glory to the mechtechs!
Combat and the UI is a bit rough, but overall is a fun game. 4/5 star
I tried to enjoy this game, but there is nothing that really draws you in. Often times the game is like playing a book, and it just kept losing my interest.
Great turned based strategy game. Excellent story, gets the blood stirring.
I love and enjoy the battletech/mechwarrior brand
Everything about this game is terrific. Whether you're a longtime fan of the Battletech/Mechwarrior franchise or you know nothing about it, I promise you this game is more than worth the money.
It's ok. Good story. Well thought game mechanics.
Just a solid replication of the tabletop game in video format. The campaign game and storyline campaign are both fun for multiple replays, and there are lots of excellent mods available from the userbase.
>Played with BTA Mod
>Found an Atlas with a sword and AC/20
>Made it run at 8 tiles per turn
>One shot everything in glorious melee combat
10/10 would become the Pirate Lord again.
Loved playing MechWarrior 3 back in middle school. This is just another facet of that that nostalgia, albeit turn-based combat. Love the mechs and the customization. Enjoyed the campaign. Fun to mess around in career mode, especially with cheats/modded game files.
Simply a great game, thought it would just be a good mech game but it's so much more, fully surprised and thoroughly pleased.
Even after six years, this game still has mission breaking bugs. You wanna stop me from buying your future games? Ignore all the bug reports complaining about how your game is wasting people's limited time. Broken path finding is such a stupid thing to leave unfixed. The devs should be ashamed to charge people for a game and then leave it in this state.
Came back to this after trying to play Mechwarrior 5 and it seems that this franchise is committed to selling people hot garbage.
If you want a company management game with deep strategic, tactical, and economic play, go check out Starsector. It's space ships instead of mechs but it has even deeper customisation, superb worldbuilding, and a thriving mod community. Starsector is still in development but it's head and shoulders above this garbage. You wont find it on Steam. Just go to fractalsoftworks dot com.
You can thank me later.
What I like about this game is the turn based tactical combat. I have not played the tabletop version of this, but playing this makes me want to step further into the BATTLETEC world. Also, there is a lot of variation in missions (which is hard given that this is essentially a combat game.) Beyond typical missions, there are power gamer goals such as accumulating money, mechs, warriors, weapons, and clout with various factions (most of which have achievement badges if you are into collecting such.) There is also a small role-playing element, although once you have experienced it, that's it. They are mostly superfluous. Even though I have played this for a while I have not played online, and at this point in this game's history, there does not seem to be as many people hosting games. There are however, simple skirmishes that you can do if you want to test out the capabilities of a given mech, and there are a few achievements for those as well. There is a vast (in my opinion) difference and variety in mechs. As I racked up hours in the game, I slowly started to be able to to recognize a mech by only seeing it's weapons fire at me. This gives the feeling that you are learning just like a (real) mechwarrior. While I cannot vouch for the stability of the system online, I think this game would be wonderful for tournament play. So, given what I have written, I would recommend this game.
This game captures the spirit of Battletech. I like the Mech bay custom features and the campaign system.
This game is only worth playing, and continue playing, because of the modding community has turned it into the game that the fans originally wanted. And not just a compromised product designed to appeal to the largest number of people.
If you're looking to buy this game in 2024 what you'll need to do is head over to Nexus Mods. There are a host of great mods that give you the enter map of the galaxy, mods that allow other factions to war and take systems, and my current favourite, Hyades Rim which changes the story, rewriting it, changing the cut scenes, your role (which didn't make any sense to the roll playing elements of your origin story).
Is it the Cresecent Hawks Inception remake that i've always dreamed of (i'd destroy the only copy of Half-life 3 if it meant someone remakes Cresecent Hawk inception) .
So Batteltech is worth it. Its cheap, play vanilla and then go town modding it. Every fricken planet has its own story, there are hundreds of mechs that modders have put into the game, thousands of weapons and equipment, great missions (properly thought out, challenging but not impossible, well paced).
Jeez why are you still reading this. Go buy it.
4.5 of 5 Stars
For fans of the Battletech universe, especially anyone that enjoyed the older MechCommander isometric perspective games, this title is highly recommended. The campaign is entertaining with lots of Mech action. The "cut-scenes" are basic, but the voice acting is good. In a lot of ways, this is a retro 1990's game.
I believe the story-line campaign was about 18 hours and the DLC allows for continued play in a "Career" mode of procedurally generated missions, with specific mini-campaign missions salted throughout. There is a modding community for this game and they have created some terrific content, including entire replacement campaigns.
I enjoyed my time playing Battletech and revisit the game often. I definitely got my money's worth of entertainment from it.
Arguably one of the best PC strategy games.. let alone any strategy games ever made.
Play it now!!
if you can adjust to the "chess style" turn play, and have patience, it is not too bad. If you are one who has been used to the "in mech style" of play and constantly moving, it will be a hard adjustment to make.
