Spelunx is an educational game cleverly disguised as an exploration in a cave. The cave contains many toys, games, and activities that are fun to play with but also happen to teach principles of math, biology, physics, etc.

This is the closest of the precursors to Myst to Myst itself but also the least engaging. Its worth playing for nostalgia or studios purposes if you just want to see one of the games that lead up to Myst but otherwise hard to recommend as something to play in this day and age
This is an old mac game, that I loved playing as a kid in the early 90's. Amazing nostalgia to have it back, and on PC, all these years later.
Do i like it? yes. Do i recommend it? Nah. Unless you have nostalgia for it I don't see why anyone would really enjoy it. I never had this growing up and I personally enjoy clicking around and its just something to pass time.
I remembered this game from when I was a kid, so I bought it.
Then I realized I didn't remember this game at all.
It's pretty much a hypercard stack with a bunch of random stuff to click on.
We had an entire generation of free flash games since then, some of which are more interesting than this.
Very poorly made port. Very obvious JPEG artifacts. Very clumsy upscaling, at the very least they could have scaled it by a whole multiple of the original, if not used a more advanced scaling algorithm. Some animations are missing, and so it Spelunx Builder.
Don't buy this, it's a complete waste. Set up an emulator and run the real thing instead.
Great game for today's kids, as well as for nostalgic kids of the 90s like me! No plot or bad guys, but fun exploring and clicking random things. Players will find plenty to interact with, and no shortage of humor, whimsy, and fun! A true Cyan masterpiece!
Such a great old game! Very Myst-like, clearly a Cyan adventure :) The Cyan Kids pack of games are all educational and make the player figure things out. Great for kids and relaxing for adults that like the Myst type games.
Like Cosmic Osmo, this game is all about clicking around the world and exploring. This game is in color, but the aesthetic is still similar to the likes of Cosmic Osmo, which adds a neat twist to it. Though it is aimed at a slightly younger audience, it's a little closer to young adults; there are a lot of different science experiments that do a good job of teaching you about the world. Despite that, it still encourages creativity, which affords it greater appeal. There isn't very much exploration, but the scenery is pleasant, and it does make a good teaching tool.
This game defined my early childhood. It's short, and primitive, but the nostalgia I got from it was undeniable.

Not Recommended at all!
It's pretty much an open-ended exploration game with some small activities. Sort of like one of those keyboard toys for little kids where they can just mess around and make some funny sounds over and over. It's fine for what it is, but it's not really something you'll get much out of if you're over the age of 5-7 or so. There is actually a bit of programming, some science experiments and the like, so it's not really just a noise-maker. If you're getting it for a kid, it's pretty cool!

TLDR: Dos-Era. Odd on purpose. Has some novel ideas in some of the minigames, but it is tedious to figure out and the payoff isnt there when you do.
Game fullscreened correctly on widescreen which surprised me. No music and the game feels way too silent. Otherwise this suffers from heavy moon logic. Done on purpose to keep things fresh. The way you transition in environments is meant to disrupt your impression of continuity. You will look through a window for example, which will become a door, which will become a minigame, that you will unlock, and end up even deeper in the rabbit hole navigating a different environment altogether. It is interesting but there is too much trial and error, not enough clues or guidance. I found a book with a ton of text loredump but did not really felt like caring. All things considered this is a pixelated pointless journey that I will keep archived with my discarded titles but I do not intend on really playing it, nor do I think any of my guests ever would.
Young kids point and click adventure. Look around various environments, and find little things to play with, like a music maker, small animator, etc. Very short, but good for little kids.
This is like Myst for children and I wish I had this game as a child, because unfortunately nowadays I lack the patience and time to be content with random things happening when I click stuff with my mouse.
Still, I was impressed with the amount of content such a small game offers.
Sure it's very (VERY) outdated, but the graphics are colorful and cute and it could easily diverse children for quite some time, as there's much to experiment with and explore.
Truly a sweet game.
And now to another intriguing incident, Why the hell does Steam show Shadow of Morder as the first game in line for "Games like this"?
Is it just my client?
Has the world gone mad?
Spelunx and the Caves of Mr. Seudo - the game that was Shadow of Mordor before there ever was Shadow of Mordor.
Definitely give a try.
If you don't have nostalgia for this, there isn't much here to sink your teeth into and not really any goal. It's a small area to point and click around. There are a few toys to play with (simple animation studios, a music sequencer, a couple simple physics demos). There's a lot click a nose on a face and it will turn into different kinds of noses or click a picture on the wall to make a sound effect like Humongous Entertainment games.
My two favorite things are the sound demos. One shows a rock falling down a hole and how long it takes the sound to bounce back up. The other shows lightning at various distances and how long it takes the sound to reach you. You can see everything in about a half hour and that's if you're really trying to experience everything. There is a short book in the game with backstory that would probably double that length.
Also, as someone else said, don't forget to click the fire.
i loved this game as a little kid, back when it had 6 floppy disks for the install.
not as magical as i remember, of course, but it was still worth getting the bundle for.
give it to your kid and see what happens :)
the middle floor is gone though. i even emailed Cyan and asked them about it...

Thank you for contacting Cyan Worlds!
Yes, the middle floor is no longer in the game and that means the editor is gone (sorry to have to tell you that). The later releases of Spelunx did not have the editor available and this is due to major changes in the technology used. HyperCard (Apple Computer, Inc.) was the original technology used and was required in order for the editor to function – it no longer exists.
We are glad to hear that you are enjoying Spelunx again :-)
Thank you,
Vicki
Again, like with the other bonus games in the bundle, we are left with a non-standard point-and-click adventure that is especially perfect for children. This one is actually better for slightly older kids, as it has far more purely educational content to it than the other two while still having the sense of fun that comes with being able to click everything to see what it does. For instance, you can learn the basics about the planets and see what they look like (in the pixelated way you'd expect of a game this old), drop rocks into a hole to learn how quickly it falls to various depths and how long it takes the sound to return to you, and even see how soon thunder follows a lightning strike at a certain distance away, among other things. This is a game you could actually feel fairly okay with letting the kids spend a good amount of time on. At the same time, the sense of adventure that is present when hunting down new things and seeing what it all does is kept intact as well. Overall, this game once again makes the bundle worth it, serving as an excellent little bonus, and I'll definitely keep it on hand for the next time I have kids around to entertain.
Spelunx is a short exploration type game that has quite a few innovative user changable features for an early 1990s game. Other than those few features, there wasn't a whole lot to it. It works nicely as an "extra" in the bundle.
Tired of your foster parents beating you with soda cans? Escape from reality with Spellunx. This exploration game has no beggining, nor end. You play as a wanderer exploring the mysteries of Mr. Seudo (some crazy scientist).
If you play long enough, you will see the sheer genius of Mr. Seudo. He uses many hard and medical problem words. JUST KIDDING, there is absolutely no dialogue in this game. I think my favorite part of Spellunx is the telescope room, inside of cave, pointing at the ceiling. This magical mother fucking telescope can see through the caves ceiling and is pointing at the constellation of Cancer. THIS GAME WILL GIVE YOU CANCER.
Very education, for ages 5-10
Honu's Rating 6/10
This is a pretty cool game to show off the smokin' fast 2x CD-ROM you just bought. Also, I am recommending this in 1993.
