Game breaking bug. Use steam overlay and Aether will hold your hand forever. Restarting, dying wont solve the problem. Leaving the game unplayable. Sad but whatever. Uninstalled.
Fall of Light follows the journey of Aether and her father, as he explores and guides her throughout a world shrouded In darkness, In search of 3 Crystal Shards, saying anymore about the story will potentially spoil It, suffice to say that the story Is alright, but definitely nothing to write home about.
This Is an Action/RPG that plays kind of like Demon's Souls/Dark Souls If It had an Isometric Perspective, combat Is clunky, the character that we control feels heavy and sluggish, no matter what weapon you use, couple that with the starter weapon being literal trash (or the hit box for it and/or enemies being completely broken) and I wouldn't blame someone for rage quitting at the very start, speaking of weapons, there's a decent assortment (Sword, Dagger, Mace, Greatsword, Great Axe, Polearm, Crossbow) and they all handle different from each other, featuring different attack animations, speed, damage, etc, which I thought was pretty cool plus you can obtain upgraded versions of each as you progress, the downside however, Is that you can only have 2 equipped at a time, and If you swap something out and than decide you prefer the previous weapon, hopefully you remembered where you left It, as they stay on the ground wherever you swapped them/dropped them. You'll most likely find a weapon type that you prefer and stick with It, everyone recommends the Greatsword, but I much preferred the Polearm for the speed and reach personally. With that said, there's a pretty decent variety of enemies throughout the game, but they all behave rather similar to one another, so battles usually play out by luring enemies, hitting them with a Weak/Strong combo, maybe evading an attack and than rinsing and repeating. Same with bosses, which makes them rather underwhelming.
We've already established the combat leaves some to be desired, but what about the game world? Fortunately, the game does a slightly better job In this aspect. The areas are varied and sufficiently distinct from one another, although they do tend to be slightly uninspired, The Forest was my favorite area altogether and the first two dungeons were pretty nice, although the last one was a joke and traps every now and again give the world a dangerous vibe, as not paying attention could get you Instantly killed by one.
A few more Issues I had, In no particular order:
-I know the overall theme of the game Is "a world shrouded In darkness", but there's no need to literally make the game so dark, that you struggle to make things out without bumping your monitor's brightness. The lantern does little to help.
-As mentioned before, areas could do with a little bit more Inspiration thrown at them. Like the waterfall that Aether goes Into and plays around for a bit, I'd have loved to see more things like that.
-Speaking of Aether, she's supposed to make you stronger If she's close to you, but I never noticed any difference, even "upgrading" her felt completely useless.
-One bug was particularly annoying and that's the physics of the weapons, I swapped out "the strongest weapon" and It glitched In mid air because It bounced when I swapped It.
-Although enemies are visually distinct, they behave too similarly to each other, thus diminishing their uniqueness, by the player being able to deal with most enemies In the same manner.
When all Is said and done, Is It worth It? Only If It's on sale, otherwise, there are far better ways to spend $15.
Loved the game.
It's hard, but very good.
Finished it with a big smile of satisfaction.
As with the Dark Souls games, benefited with certain help.
Used the truly useful maps found in a guide here on the Steam game hub:

Good job man, thanks !
Also used the really fine full text walkthrough at www.trueachievements.com/game/Fall-of-Light/walkthrough/1
You can save only at the Shrines of Power.
Do that ingame.
Then go save this folder :
C:\Users\ *you* \AppData\LocalLow\RuneHeads\FallOfLight, zip or winrar that folder.
If you die or want to go back to your zipped save, you *must* quit the game -otherwise it will take the new game save instead made after dying-, and overwrite with the contents of you own zipped save.
My favorite rpg/soulslike game. Great story: starts out mysterious and develops into one of three awesome endings. It's a little difficult on your first few playthroughs but gets easier after you memorize the maps and the locations of powerful weapons. I'd say it is much easier than Dark Souls games and serves as a great introduction to the soulslike genre.
There are two complaints I have with the game. The first is that your character holds some weapons (flaming sword is one of them) super weird. The second is that it can be difficult to activate a Shrine of Power (save point) because the game gets picky about where you need to stand to activate it.
I just... cant. I gave it a shot, played for 4 hours and came to the conclusion that this game deserves the negative reviews. It just lacks on too many areas and all those combined make it an awful experience. The artstyle and the idea was what interested me but everything else is just pure garbage.
Would have refunded after my first time playing (for 45min) if I hadnt bought the game a few years ago and that way not filling the criteria for refunds.
I loved the game, but I can see why it's getting mixed reviews.
TL:DR If you're not nit-picky you should have fun for some hours with this “souls-like”, more if you go for all the endings, which is not worth it.
Story/Lore?
Shamelessly copy-pasted out of Dark Souls: darkness consuming everything as light fades and you gotta fix that. And I’m not even kidding, from second 1 you see similarities so evident that makes you laugh and wonder how the developers didn’t get sued. All in all, it adds some of its own spice, a little of its own way to presenting the struggle with the whole Father and Daughter fighting darkness as you start to discover what actually is going on… and does that really well so, surprisingly, that’s enough to keep you engaged.
Setting?
Amazing. Even with its minimalistic style, all the areas feel well crafted, from enemy placement to ambient sounds and decorations. With that said, some areas need some tweeking. Also, be sure to set the game’s brightness all the way up, otherwise some areas will be black. Not dark, black, you just won’t see a thing without the lantern. For me that was fine, as it added more to the feeling of traversing a world that’s going down the sinkhole as it is consumed by darkness.
Combat?
It’s alright. There nothing special about it and not too many things wrong with it. There’s no magic, the one ranged option is “meh” and 2h weapons are broken: almost no hitboxes, super slow and neglectable damage, except for that one “secret” 2h sword that’s intentionally OP. Aside from it, dual wield heave into light combo worked best for me.
General gameplay?
Again, nothing special. The “ICO” mechanic of escorting and protecting your daughter from enemies and kidnapping shadows doesn’t get in the way but doesn’t add much either. It’s just there to give a different feeling to the story and the game, and does that well so it’s welcomed.
Leveling and customization?
Practically non-existent. You pick your cape at the beginning, loot better weapons with different move sets and passive effects, and grow stronger when killing enemies and resting at statues. That’s it.
NPCs/Voice acting/Sounds?
Some are amazing, truly on point; others feel out of place, and don’t expect anything that you wouldn’t find in a Dark Souls game when it comes to dialogues and personalities. As for sounds… the whole game screams “royalty free [add anything you can think of]”.
I actually got immediately hooked on this game. I got it during the Halloween sale and wanted to try it to see if I like it, and I immediately got hooked. It does remind me a BIT like Dark Souls, but more like ICO and Aragami. I've seen complaints where the attacks are sluggish, inputs are slow, slow response, etc. Well, there is a stamina bar, and the heavier the weapon, the more you have to carry and swing, and the more it wears you down, which also means the character is not Hercules and thus must prepare to swing whatever weapon is available. I find it refreshing that it takes time for a warrior to seem to actually show using strength to swing a sword bigger than he is instead of swinging it like a rapier.
I do agree that falling off narrow paths when dodging made up most of my death count, but I combated this by leading the enemies to a bigger area. Sometimes it works, sometimes it didn't, but if you step of a ledge in real life, there is no invisible wall to catch you.
The music and design is subtle and pleasing, not epic and grandiose. The storyline is actually pretty interesting and for me, seemed influenced by the concept of darkness/light, good/evil and that story running parallel to an underlying story. I hope I explained that right. Hard to explain it. The concept, story, and design seemed cohesive, but fights did get repetitive and after a bit I did feel like I was grinding to level my character, but it's not as bad as many other games out there where grinding is a necessity. Here is just an "environmental hazard" as killing enemies are needed to traverse the game's world, rather than backtracking and waiting specifically for killing re-spawning enemies JUST to gaining levels.
My only complaint is there stereotypical multi-phase end-boss. Many games have done this, specifically the later Final Fantasy Series. The If-you-hurt me-I will-only-get-stronger! stuff. You can't just defeat the boss in-line with the story, you have to defeat them and their two higher steps of raging from smacking them. For me it doesn't add to the story but is just pissing on the player for making it that far.
NOTE: This is my opinion and thoughts of the game and not an overall view of the game for general audiences. As with many reviews and opinions, take this with a grain of salt and do your own research. This notice should not be necessary, put is included due to previous inflammatory commentary on reviews from previous games due to people being "butt-hurt" that I said either something bad about the game, disagreed with it being good, or using "wording or descriptions" one doesn't agree with.
If there was a "neutral" rating option, I would choose it for this game. I can't fully recommend it, but I wouldn't say it's complete crap either. It has a few good things but also a few bad (mostly annoying, not bad in the sense that the game itself is bad) things.
Good things:
- High difficulty, which comes from the lack of explanation and from the darkness everywhere.
- Interesting and unique story, as far as I can say. Be aware that it's not what it seems at first, it's not a typical fantasy story, instead it's getting quite surreal quickly.
- Tries to copy Dark Souls in many ways (which I wouldn't see as bad, honestly).
Annoying things:
- Some glitches with movement which sometimes make you stuck in certain places (I had to restart the game a few times because I couldn't continue moving) or which make you get up stairs ridiculously slow.
- BASICALLY NO INVENTORY. I love experimenting with equipment, you can almost completely forget this here. And if you drop a weapon and then leave that area, it's gone forever.
These first two are honestly the worst, but not the only annoyances.
- You can't upgrade your stamina or stats in any way.
- If you die in a boss room, your lost stuff will always be INSIDE the room, so you're basically stuck with trying the boss over and over again.
This game could be improved by giving you an inventory, letting you keep weapons and giving you a way to work on your stats and equipment.
The voice acting is honestly not nearly as bad as some people say it is. It's far from perfect, but I actually really like the voices of some NPCs.
Also I'm not sure if I like the beginning of the intro. It starts too much like the Dark Souls I intro. Even though I love DS and anything related to it, I think this might have been a bit over the top.
While the game looks pretty, it seems like it is a badly ported console game.
Input lag is a huge issue. Click keys, and *maybe* the game will register the input within the next few seconds, Maybe.
The voice overs were bland, often sounding like a bored teen was reading them. The narrative pacing, as well as the pacing of the intro movie was abysmally slow, and dragggggggggged on, with odd pauses, where there should have been none. In English, at least.
The input lag or non-recognition of input by the game, made combat basically impossible. Dying constantly, due to clunky combat and porr controls, just is not fun. Combat behind solid objects gives no target outlines or sight through some obljects like walls or curtains, You have to poke and hope you block or hit something. Again, not fun.
May be better if using a controller. No idea, I didn't feel like trying after the frustrations of trying to stay alive for 10 minutes, multiple times. It just got old. and was not compelling enough for me to keep trying. And the controls have zero accessibility options if you have RSI issues arthritis, or tendonitis issues in your hands. Which I do, both arthritis and tendonitis. The controls were so awkward they were painful, physically painful. Spamming keys, hoping one input will actually take, generally does not feel "nice" to sore hands.
Yes, I refunded. The game just did not feel good to me.
Your Mileage May Vary.
The game doesn't tell you that when you beat one of the shard bosses, you have to carry the girl to a far away, unique shrine that for the vast majority of players, probably had gotten to the dungeon before even coming across this place. Why is this a bad thing? Because if you don't make it in time, it's literally game over! You have to start from the very beginning of the game, and not just a checkpoint, if you want to get the correct ending. This mechanic appeared over four hours into the game.
Other places the developers troll you in the same dungeon is a lever you have to climb up a wall of coffins to get, while every other wall of the exact same look is not climbable. Look in the discussions, and see how many people didn't know where to go after solving a pillar puzzle in the Water Shard dungeon. Another reason why this sort of thing is so infuriating is that there are so many places that look like you should be able to reach, but the ones you can reach are the ones you shouldn't be able to.
This game is simply a souless attempt at making a Dark Souls game in a top down perspective, and where the developers here got From Software's philosophy of fair but challenging gameplay confused with trolling their consumers. You are constantly slapped in the face in this game, and unlike the other games of the genre, it's not your fault.
What makes this worse is that the game *should* be good, but too many times the developer breaks the logic of the game's design to piss off the player. It's almost like they purposely waited till the game was far enough along to do something especially cruel, because at that point you couldn't ask for a refund. This game is a joke, where not only does it disrespect the time of the player, it does it to the degree that I've never before experienced. This coming from someone who has played all the Dark Souls games, Platinumed Bloodborne and annihilated Hollow Knight. It broke my spirit in a genre that I play all the time, and for that very reason it's the worst one of them all, and the most disrepctful game I've ever played 1/10 (I'd give it a 0, but when it works it works, but then they go and slap you in the face)
I might regret this, but I'm allowing comments, but I want to hear from both the developers, and from the players who have experienced my issues
Fall of light is a pretty solid game despite a few flaws.
(there may be a few spoilers here)
I really enjoyed the story and the graphics and the atmosphere. Coming from a huge fan of the dark souls series, this game definitely draws from that sort of genre. There's no hand holding here and at times it was difficult to figure out your next move. But that was a welcome feeling that grew the more I played the game. There is no map. A lot of trial and error but usually with positive results.
My only major gripes were the cut throat end of game, or end of getting a GOOD game if you failed even once to get the girls body to a ray of light. That was a bit too brutal. The player shouldnt be punished for one tiny mistake and letting a good 15+ hours all be gone to waste. There's no previous save file to revert to so your stuck with the not great ending and all your hard work is gone. I appreciate being able to continue my game knowing that I wouldnt get the good ending but still. a horrible design flaw in my opinion.
My only other issue was after recieveing a sword from the blacksmith. I could very easily 1 hit EVERY monster in the game, and any weapon that I found after that sword was a useless find. even the boss battles were over in a matter of mere seconds. The first half of the game was hard and even brutal at times and I found myself very cautiously traversing the levels, but with that blacksmith sword...way too easy.
Dont get me wrong, despite these faults, I loved the game. I found all the memories, but only collected 86 of the Shards of Luce. I Highly doubt I will go back and replay to find them all and to try and get the good ending. but we'll see
Great effort on the game designers though. I hope to see more from you guys in the future.
At first this game will frustrate you as it has a decently steep learning curve. However once you get the mechanics down it is a very fun game with a lot of variation between weapons and tactics. The story is intriguing and, while the plot moments are interesting and well thought out.
The response by the game authors when posting in forums is insanely good. I have never gone 24 hours without a post being answered or a problem addressed.
I absolutely love this game.
Not just for the combat, which is so fluid and responsive.
But for the not so simple fact that I now feel like a father, fighting against the dark for the sake of my little girl.
I feel real sorrow when I let her die because of a stupid maneuver I pulled or because I was caught unaware.
In this sense, the game really does punish you for sucking, and it hurts... it genuinely does. Because I genuinely care for that little girl.
So, now I'm sitting here, tears in my eyes, snot and slobber running down my shirt, bawling my friggin' eyes out, all for the sake of that precious girl who can only express three or four sounds because I want to see a gaddamn happy ending.
Long story short. Buy this game.
oh, also, the graphics are pretty charming I guess.
Description
In contrast to the first review around 2017, the game mechanics has changed.
Even though I was approached rather rudely by the developer and another user (maybe a twink) for the review at the time, they seem to have taken it to heart in the meantime, because the criticized snooping mechanics on the part of Unity have been deactivated.
There is only one request left where this is declared.

Thus, the stress at that time was worth it. In contrast to the earlier version, the GDS service of the Valve Corporation is also no longer in this title.

At first glance it seemed like a neat little top down action game, It was simple but i liked the premise and the idea of your light source being your source of strength was pretty interesting overall.
But once you get past the tutorial area it just falls apart. It tries to mimmick Dark Souls but the controlls are outright terrible with punishing checkpoints and enemies who will just basically take you out instantly. Combat and dodging/blocking clash and you cant seemlessly go between the two. It makes the souls-inspired combat just frustrating and poorly implimented.
It funnels you into enemies and sometimes you flat out cannot hit them because either they just backstep while pelting you with arrow and you quite literally cant connect a swing faster than he can move (and I was using a dagger) and enemies with shields are essentially untouchable.
It tries too hard to be Dark Souls, and loses its own identity in the process.
Fall of light, where to start.
The game certainly has it's ups and downs and can be extremely frustrating at times and very rewarding as well.
The game will definitely not work for all but for me it was very fun.
It is similar to a degree to Dark Souls which is what caught my attention.
I was on the verge of rage quitting a few times but managed to pull through and find a way to get better at the game.
Similar to Dark Souls it does have a steep learning curve, you can't just come in to it with the expectation that since you've beaten DS many times you can cruise through this game.
The game has some balance issues and some quirks that needs polishing but nothing game breaking.
It's just a matter of understanding the quirk and learn to work with it.
I would strongly recommend playing the game with a controller (I'm using my PS4 one) as the keyboard and mouse controls just had me screaming at the screen. :)
I've only played DS on Playstation so maybe I'm just used to playing these kinds of games with a controller.
The controller just gave me so much more control of the character and timing attacks/rolls which is essential is these types of games.
It's fun exploring and solving puzzles, combat is hard but gets easier when you learn the enemies attack patterns and weaknesses.
Would I recommend this game?
Yes I would, but with a disclaimer that it is not suited for all players.
It is NOT a DS clone, it works differently and has its own strengths and weaknesses as any game does.
With that in mind you need to like tough games that will beat you again and again.
If that is to your liking then there's a good chance you will enjoy this game as well.
very intuetive game. clever little game very modern looking.. cute way hloding the girls hand around and take care of her. makes the game more diverse!
Steam Controller + 4K TV works flawleslly.
Totally recommend!!!
one con though not sure about it...
--- max health reached??? i dont know if i reached max health (bug) or not but it wont let me upgrade my health.
Great game but the combat. Unfortunetly for me the combat is the most important part :(. Oh and the reason I dont like is your hero is way too slow. Dodge + 1 sword hit ( thats if you land it before the ennemy super fast strike you) and your out of stamina and back peddling for the next 5-6sec.
No, I’m not a Dark Souls fan. I tried playing Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3 and did not enjoy much. Too difficult and very unforgiving. Also gargantuanly huge. Fall of Light is smaller, not as brutal and also has elements in really love from classic Japanese games like ICO and RE4. So far I’m really enjoying the game.
I just finished the demo, and wow, I love it. Here are my notes:
1. People say this is like Dark Souls, BUT...
I want to clarify this. Fall of Light is its own game. Yes, you die a lot like Dark Souls and the number crunching is minimal. You have squares that represent HP, you start with 5, so it's very simple, but not in a bad way. I like number crunching a lot, but I was not detered by this system. But this game is very much different. I love the camera (it does not jack with you), I love how it feels like an isometric ARPG in its presentation, but it is not an ARPG.
2. The comabt is really well done. There was a game called "Examina" that tried to do very physical-based combat, and this has strains of similarities, but Examina failed miserably. The targeting makes this game awesome, but even without, it was far far better than Examina. I liken this to the combat from Gothic 1 and 2 (LOL Gothic 3 was terrible). You have to learn enemies and time your attacks and defensive moves. Once you learn an enemy, you can dominate him.
3. There are fresh ideas in this game and they are good ideas. The companion you bring with you adds some really cool elements. The aesthetics are fantastic.
Really well done devs, well done. I immediately bought this game upon completing the demo, and the price is right!!
Thanks to the developers at RuneHeads and the publisher 1C Company(who knew they were still around?) for creating and distributing a good game for me to escape, explore and enjoy.
*Note There is a demo for Fall of Light. I would recommend go and try as it is an excellent representation of the game. I do not know if it receives patches.
A few years ago i reviewed a game, Aarklash Legacy(2013), that at the time ignored everything that was expected to be in an rpg by stripping itself down to nothing more than the basic needs for the player and successfully focused more on the combat. I think Fall of Light has done the same. Its strips away everything you expect you need in today’s rpg world to the core and keeps the focus more importantly on an engaging story and brutal combat.
Fall of Light is a third person action game that is a story about a father and daughter and their journey to see the last reminisce of sunlight in a world that has been plunged into darkness by the evil Pain. As a child of light, Aether(your daughter) can destroy the evil and return the world back to light by finding three artifacts. It's a successful journey to undertake as it has rewarding exploration, combat and storytelling. The ending boss fight is a highlight and the story conclusion is somber depending on which ending you achieve(i only got the bad one).
As you begin the journey you are given a tutorial of most of the basics. Your daughter who glows with an aura of sunlight is the main light source on your quest and she will add some passive abilities during combat if she is in close vicinity. Combat is pretty basic with heavy, light attack, block and roll and is also tied to a stamina meter. There is a good variety of one handed/two handed weapons to cater to your style though i felt two handed were almost impossible to use. There is also a good roster of enemies and most have different moves to learn in order to survive. For the most part enemies are aggressive, so much so they will chase you clear across a map. I beat the game prior to the first patch and all i can say is the game is way easier and more forgiving now.
My favorite part of Fall of Light, besides the story, is the exploration and unknown. Level design is key as the world is full of secrets, shortcuts and rewards. I've played through the game almost twice now and still have yet to find two upgrades for Aether. The game also looks amazing(i don't know what the style is called) and it ran flawless at 1080P Ultra Wide. There is a good variety of locations and all with their own unique identity and enemies to encounter. As you explore you will come upon pillars/monuments that are used as checkpoints. Anytime they are used or you perish it will reanimate all fallen enemies. These monuments are also used for upgrading which is limited to additional health. There is no deep skill tree of weapons, armor, health, etc. and there are no potions, crafting, or spells. There is also limited inventory of 4 slots(2 handed takes up 2 slots) so no overweight or huge inventory to maintain.
Fall of light does two things a lot of games are afraid to do, it strips what you think you need in an RPG and then adds an easy, emotional story to follow. The simple mechanic of holding your daughter's hand as you explore for some reason made it more meaningful to reach the end than i ever spent wondering if I was almost ready to level. I wish more developers would focus as Fall of Light on presenting a solid game experience rather than flood my inventory and lose focus with meaningless objectives.
Positives
Emotional ending
Exploring is rewarding and satisfying
Good level and sound design
Challenging and fair combat
Learning the unknown
NG+ makes the world darker
Negatives
Too many shards to collect
AI needs tweaked- kamikazes that will chase you across the map
Level limit
Checkpoint locations
Some weapons felt impossible to use
Really bad puzzle at the end
No impact or feel on a deathblow like when hitting shields
