Creatures Such as We

This nearly 10 year old game was a gem of a find! The story and characters were all too relateable, and the experience was only heightened by the meta storytelling aspects. It was short and sweet, didn't overstay it's welcome. Settled in just long enough to get you thoroughly engaged and invested, and then like a farewell from a dear friend it left you with an oddly comforting wistfulness.

This is so good. It's probably the best interactive novel I've played in a little while. It's class-conscious without being self-righteous, thematic without being pretentious, and is really honest and empathetic about its subject matter in a way I did not expect. I can't say anything more without spoiling the whole thing, so I'll just keep this brief and say: if video games occupy as large of a place in your heart as they do mine, then this game will move you as much as it did me.

So this is only the second game of this nature that I've played, and I'm torn on whether or not I recommend it to everybody. While it's a lovely story and well written with an abundance of choice...

I felt that the meta-nature of the conversations and philosophy was aimed at making me not want to play a second time, and at the moment of writing this review it may well have succeeded.

It made me feel a bit guilty for enjoying games and then made me feel further guilt about wanting happy endings in spite of author intentions. Personally I feel like the real world is ugly enough and I don't really want my forms of stress relief to shame me about wanting more for the fictional characters ;-;

That said, it isn't a bad story at all, so if you don't mind some introspection on gaming then you will likely enjoy this. It certainly makes you think, but it left me feeling down in a way I tend to avoid in most forms of media.

dont really have a well written review, but the first playthrough, though I could have done better, I was incredibly happy with. I was really happy while playing this game.

It was the first "Choice of" games I played, and it is the one that pulled me into the genre of texte-based games. It's been many years now and since I had forgotten most of it, I decided to buy it on Steam and replay it. What amazes me is that I still find as great as I did before: not only are the story and the writing good, but the themes that the game and its characters make you explore are particularly interesting and well-thought. Your choices are meaningful, and the narrative even makes the best use of the fact that you are able to make choices in the first place.

Also, I LOVED that for once, we have a Choice of Games without any stats! It's really freeing: you're able to make all of your decisions based on roleplay and what your character would do, without having to worry about not receiving the right stat boost. It makes the story all the more immersive. 10/10 would recommend.

The game starts out inside a game. You are a tour guide you plays a fantasy game which...you don't like the ending. Then the next bunch of tourists turn out to be the creators of the game.
Oh, and you are a tour guide on the Moon. As I like hard sci-fi and love debating art and the meaning and purpose of stories, I enjoyed parts of the game. But it seems WAY too short. I finished my first run in just over a hour and a half. Tell, I will likely replay a couple of times. But it kind of feels like I am on tracks a few times. Like somehow I got involved with one of the characters and I wasn't even trying to.
I wish there was a so-so button instead of just yes and no. I will select Yes. But warn you it might not be for everyone.

Lots of typographical and grammar errors, which is quite a big deal in a text-only game. For the rest it's extremely bland and only 'profound' on the level of "Do you like kittens: yes, no, maybe, grilled". Having played-through twice I couldn't find any meaningful comment on much at all. But it's cheap and won't take too much time, so go ahead.

One of the few choice based stories that really has you thinking afterwards, which is refreshing. It isnt too long and is just as long as it needs to be. Very easy to get into and read, though the first few pages may be a bit confusing but its part of the theme. The forced diversity took me a little out of it but it you can look past that I def recommend it. I just wish the damn ending was different. (jokes)

Lovely game.
The different layers and elements merge really well together. It feels like a wonderful mix of reading a book and playing a video game and the themes underlines this really well.
The writing is good, the choices feel meaningful, the discussions seem relevant and the themes and parallels are clear while not being too on the nose.
Each 'page' has a really good length for keeping you going and not overwhelming you with the length.
In the beginning I was a bit in doubt about the format, but as the game progressed I was completely engulfed and the love for video games was clear and contagious.

It was short, sweet and had a very clever ending. Reading it was a breeze; some of these games can get a little slow and ambling, but this one did not. This is in the upper tier of Choice of Games and is a very unique experience compared to the others. Thank you Lynnea for this game!

I have played upwards of 20 of these games and this is by far my favorite.
The author delves into complex themes including characters and individuality, escapism, art, and how these things work in tangent with one another. The characters are trying to navigate the function of video games as an art form, as will as how this creates a really personal challenge -- what is a good ending and what is a self-fulfilling ending? Most importantly, is art (video games specifically) for the artist or the player? Do they inevitably collide? The author moves through these strands to make an important emotional argument that I won't spoil here.
The characters are complex, the writing is tight and impactful, the story does not overstay its welcome (though I wish it had been longer), and it's a game that'll make you cycle through a million nuanced emotions.
Overall, this is probably the most unique of the Choice games I've played. The only issue I had is sometimes the character felt more like avenues for the themes to be explored, rather than autonomous characters, but the way in which they discuss these ideas still is very much in line with their personalities as artists. I feel like I'm understating how great of a game this is even if you don't really want to engage in a dialogue about art. If you want to play something for great characters and story and don't care so much for the overarching ideas, you're perfectly in luck. This is a great game for that too. But if you're at all interested in these themes, and how this game ultimately creates a fantastic example of the author's interpretation of games as art, you'll be blown away.

While I had trouble getting into this in the very beginning, it was just confusion. Once I understood what was going on... wow. That story was amazing. I now see exactly why people loved this so much. The ending was great. I loved dealing with the characters as well. I'm giving this a 10/10.

I never write reveiws. This is the first reveiw I've ever written for a game, and I hope that shows how amazing this game is. After becoming obsessed with Choice of Robots, I was craving another text based game, as I had never gotten into the genre. Let me just say, this game is a beautiful journey, with great characters, player customization, and choice. Without getting into the spoiler zone, this game starts many diologues on how players tend to squeze every bit of content from a game, never satisfied with an end. This hit very close to home for me, and it was welcome commentary. If you enjoy text-based games or have never really known about them like myself, you owe it to yourself to become a part of this story.

Creatures Such as We tells a beautiful story about life. While being extremely relatable because it's about gaming and yet very exotic since it takes place on a Lunar base. I love how it displays that some things simply cannot be changed no matter how hard you try and how the characters deal with that fact. That's realism for you. I thought the happy ending felt a little artificial, but I respect that some people might like that more. I very much enjoyed the spacy environment and the interesting plot. The style of writing felt natural and easy to read even for a non-native speaker.

Do not hesitate to get this if you like game books!

It's less a game and more of a story, but that's not completely right since it doesn't have stats (or that entire button) it keeps it more linear without blocking/forcing the player and that one thing that makes it good since it felt as much like playing an established character as much as yourself. When i saw the name of this it had me intrigued but at the time the lack of reviews made me wait, but now that i've played almost 3 hours, i would say it's worth full price

First I would like to thank the author for creating this.

A bit over a year ago, I was doing another game review, and stated something along the lines of, "This is not the "Game" I wanted, but it is the "Game" I should have expected. I then proceeded to lay into the makers of said game for what i considered (and many others also considered) to be the faults with the direction the creators had chosen to go, and the unanswered expectectations of myself and other gamers who had been following their works. I gave that game a grudging thumbs up, because while I felt (and still feel) that not only had my expectations not been met, but that they actually had been considered and then tossed right out the window in favor of another audiance, the creators of said game had done two things. 1. pretty flawlessly executed their new direction in a perfectly exceptable game for anyone not living under the expectations that I and Others had of what the game should have been. 2. Gave me and all the others who were sure to be dissapointed the tool necessary to fix / alter any and all of the game content to suit our needs/desires.
As of today there is a literal ton of content for that Game, and yet none of it ever really seems to satisfy. And I think this little text based game has finally helped me see the reason why. Curious as to what that answer might be? Play this game and see if you dont find it for yourself.

The choices, the customization of your character, the game within the game, UGH I'm in awe. Unlike most CyoA games Creatures doesn't have stats, which is such a relief honestly. I feel like I can make my own choices and not do it for a stat boost.
A must play if you like text based games!

10/10 would work on the moon again

So I really really really liked this game! Compared to other choice of games, I felt that this one was more realistic and down to earth (down to moon maybe?). I’m not saying that more fantastical scenarios are bad - I just found it refreshing. The story was exciting and kept me at the edge of my seat at times; I even cried!

The main characters voice was really well done, and it was easy to relate to them and put yourself in their shoes. Loved that cis man/woman wasn't the only choices either! The supporting characters and love interests were really well characterized aswell, and I didn’t feel like any of them fell flat. Really enjoyed the romance too, the one I did (Andres) was really sweet. Looking forward to do more playthroughs to see how all of the other characters are!
I enjoyed how meta the game was, and the game-within-a-game aspect of it. The different philosophical conversations about games you have with the characters are really fun too.

I can only highly recommend this game! : )

Abselutely amazing game, you feel with your character, there's some awesome love stuff in it. Get the game.

You sort of get 2 games out of this one - The game within a game and your "real" counterpart who is a tour guide for the moon.

I like that in the end you get to see the different alternatives that could have happened. In both games.

If you love choice of games, this shouldn't be any different unless you really hate the more realistic setting compared to some of their other stuff. I got this mainly because I saw no reviews for it, and I love almost all choice of games things, so I picked it up to review it.

If you are new to this publisher I recommend the Heroes trilogy or choice of robots one for your first games, but this isn't bad.
