Neighbourhood Necromancer is a hilarious interactive horror novel where your choices control the story. The game is entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
Will you rule suburbia openly or skulk in the shadows? Will your necromancing impress the cool kids at school? Will you use your dark powers to destroy your home town, or save it from the secret industrial/military operatives who have come to destroy you? The choice is yours.
- Become a teenage small-town necromancer.
- Play as male or female, gay or straight.
- Manage an unruly squad of walking corpses.
- Exact brutal vengeance, or struggle to maintain your humanity.
- Entertain unexpected house guests from beyond the grave.

A simple hour-long adventure with a few chuckles thrown in.
Not sure why this is so badly rated, I really enjoyed it. Quirky and fun.
I didn’t like this one. While the story was moderately unique and sometimes exciting, there were no interesting people to care about, and even if there were, you didn’t have enough time to get to know them. Indeed, there’s very little reason to care about anything at all in the bland in-game world.
The gameplay didn’t fare much better. I was never sure what stats would be used or gained before making choices, resulting in failures, and the game is also short. Not to mention, I never got a satisfying conclusion despite playing through it several times.
With that said, it’s not an awful read or anything, just below average. It might be worth getting if it’s on sale or you want to play as a lonely necromancer for an hour. (4/10)
Neighbourhood Necromancer
By Gavin Inglis
”This is a genuine occult artifact. The best place for it is your sock drawer.”
If this sounds like something you have heard while sitting around a table playing D&D, you have a pretty good idea of what this title is going to read like. I felt like I was playing single-player D&D with a kid fresh out of middle-school running the table. Considering the first few pages and choices of the game, I’m not sure I wasn’t. And you know what? That isn’t a bad thing.
General Story:
You are a kid living a very British (I’m American, so pardon) life in a very British town, eating very British food who finds a very British ‘genuine occult artifact’. I know everything is very British because Google Sheets keeps putting red lines under ‘neighbourhood’, ‘colour’, and ‘centre’. The story follows in a very irreverent way as you choose how to use your newfound powers for good or evil and determine what becomes of the very British town. Will you raise your town’s spirits? Yes. Is that a pun? Maybe.
Format and Typos:
This is an earlier choice title before they settled on their preferred format, so it doesn’t seem quite as polished as some of the CoG current releases. Aside from that, it was very readable. I didn’t notice any typos, and no grammar issues stuck out.
Game Mechanics and Stats:
This is the first title I’ve reviewed that relied on statistics, and checks against them. While there aren’t many stats, they weren’t always the clearest in what choice was checking what stat. This actually wasn’t a super big issue, because for the most part the stats were fairly generous in both the amount given, and what number you’d need to succeed by. You have some personal stats, and you maintain a number of your necromantic horde. Game often checks against your Humanity or Corruption stat, but these aren’t an opposed pair. Finally, the game tracks how ‘visible’ you are as a necromancer, and can change how you interact with choices.
Replayability:
Seems like you might be able to get a couple of runs through the game without issue. Expect different results depending on your Humanity or Corruption, and you do get a few chances at branching points. There are two romance options, both are gender-variable and one is missable. This seems like a good game to chase down achievements with, as well.
Dislikes:
- You can try to be subtle, but it seems like there is no way for the world to not learn who you are.
- The romance options feel like they were mostly included so you could say it had them.
- Events were super-episodic, and didn’t really feel like there was a cohesive ‘beginning-to-end’ arc. The story felt like it
was being made up on the fly, but again, very tabletop.
Likes:
- Some hilarious writing. “It is a sort of day care centre for bigots which also offers haircuts.”
- Loved the creativity of the intro, and how it presented character set-up.
- Doesn’t wear out its welcome. The game is quick and handles pace decently.
I forgot to leave a review when I first played it, but this one sucks.
The game revolves around the binary choice of either using zombies to murder people who have been kind of rude to you, or not interacting with any of the games' setpeices; and neither of those options have any effect on any kind of overarching story. Except at the end where the game either congratulates you for being a bastard or congratulates you for not being a bastard and, of course, you get with one of the two romance options tied to the game's two morale paths. Sam for the good necromancers and Max for the bad necromancers. Characters so lacking in in personality they don't even have cannon genders.
My time as of this review is 1.2 Hours, that's enough time to finish the story twice. If you think this game is worth the full $4 you must value $4 a lot less than I do. It's more worth 1 and even then, it'd be a tough call if your money's better spent buying this game and owning it permanently, or buying 4 gumballs from a gumball machine.
This game is fun and has good references :)
For a "choice" game, you tend to get railroaded into certain actions and outlooks quite often. This MC is just a miserable and unfeeling. Not everyone wants to be the villain of their own story.
Also, this is only a small note, but there was no third gender choice for they/them pronouns. Most "choice of" games have that these days, but this game didn't. Most people probably don't care, and that's fine. As a non-binary person myself though, I was a little sad, but that's not the reason I'm giving this game a bad review.
You can date a goth that doesn't already have an onlyfans and hang out with the band from spooky scary skeletons. Do you really need anything else in life?
An amusing standalone and quirky game that I highly enjoyed. One of my favourites from CoG. It's criminal there isn't a sequel as of this post.
I like this games, but this one is just not very good. Charackters are boring, plot repetitive, linear and dull.
Just bland, time waster.
Already played through this one on Google Play. Not bad, but nothing particularly impressive either. It's definitely worth a read though. I'd give this a 6/10.
This game was very short and strange. It was meant to be funny and I didn't think it was that great. It has an interesting start but I was hoping for more to it. I will try playing again and seeing if I can find more to the story. The problem with these games is that once I play through once, while it is usually worth it, playing through again to find alternate choices is pretty boring, even if I am curious. There should be a way to save progress when you restart so you can try new things.
Intersting style of game. Did enjoy and would like to see if this goes further.
This game is a quaint text based adventure with an interesting plot and good comedy.
I especially loved the transition when you change the background color.
(its so beautiful)
This is the perfect type of game to revisit every now and again, but not get every ending in one go. I feel like the world of this game has so much more potential. So many more stories to tell. One thing I disliked was when you replay the game, it can feel as if the different choices you make when you start change nothing. It would of been much more satisfiying if, as an example, the beginning would have a different feel depending on what you choose to do in the game. But thats just what I think.
Overall I belive this game to be very enjoyable and something I would reccomend to many people and find it a very nice experience.
It had a few moments that were funny/cool. After that though it's like a bad Adam Sandler movie.
Not as good as Choice of Games other Text based Rpgs. I'd give this one a miss was short and kind of dull.
Neighbourhood Necromancer is a very good game.
It is entirely story based, so make sure you read everything.
You can play the entire game by being a good person and saving everything, or maybe you wish to kill everyone for any reason (bad haircuts, having to wait in line, etc.)
The writing also has a lot of humor in it (like a squirrel that wishes you evil and harm!)
It's cheap and very delightful with a couple hours of fun.
The is a hidden gem among the Choice of Games Series. It does not get the fanfare of some of the Dragon or Pirate games, but it is easily among the funniest and most enjoyable pieces of work on the site. The stats in the game are intentionally not well explained, as it is not a Lucid type game where you cannot muddle your way through.
I have bought this game on multiple platforms, and I cannot recommend it enough.
tl;dr : raised millions of pets from the grave and defeated the army, ravaged a town because someone cut me while I was in line for fish and chips, and lost my girlfriend by becoming a bloodthirsty master of the undead. 10/10
First game I have played where you can make a zombie murder the local chip shop owner and fry their body in the deep fat fryers!
