Alien Arena is a furious frag fest with arenas ranging from the small, to the massive. With game modes such as Capture The Flag and Tactical, there are terrific team-based experiences to be had as well as 1v1 duels, free-for-all, and dozens of mutators to alter the game play to your liking. The game includes 23 official levels, 10 player characters, fun powerups, and 10 weapons each with 2 firing modes. The community is friendly, as well as prolific. Dozens of maps, models, and various accessories have been created by community members to add on to the game experience.
Whether playing online against others or offline against the built in AI, the fun is practically endless.

'Ol reliable in terms of arena shooters. Good first fps for beginners or if you find yourself longing for a simpler era of shooter, I'm not sure if the games charm will appeal to many others since this isn't fortnite/CoD/Valerant or any of the other bloated service "games". I've been playing alien arena for a long time and despite some bugs in the menu I've had I think this could be considered the definitive edition.
Old School gaming on Wubuntu-Windows Hibred OS...
Beautiful masterpiece , it really keeps that old nostalgic vibe to it. A big thumbs up and thank you to the creators for making it so good. A classic Arena FPS that can compete with Quake and UT.
A fun arena shooter, if a little quirky. For bot play it should do fine enough, though navigating the menus is somewhat confusing. The "Practice Offline" mode only lets you play through the game's stock maps with preset rules and bots, but if you want to play the DLC maps and customize how you want play, you'll have to go "Host Server" and set things up that way.
What is even more odd is that if you quit the game, the bots you set for each map is saved, but the server settings you made do not get saved. This can get annoying if you just want to jump in right away after setting up your preferred gameplay settings. Also, stats only save after you quit the game properly, so the achievements will only pop up after you quit the game. By the way, hope you have time to waste for 10,000 matches, at least at the time I posted this review.
Some issues aside, the game is pretty pick up and play, movement feels great and while the weapons are odd to use at first, it takes no time to get a feel for them. The game runs pretty well and for just $1, I'd say this game is good for fast-paced matches. The game's stock maps are fine, though if you really want some more interesting maps, do consider downloading all the DLC map packs to get the most you can with this game. It's nice to see that there was post-launch support for this game.
Overall, this is a fun game, I'd say it's worth a shot.
Alien Arena is a cheap old school FPS shooter,it's based on id Tech 2 CRX game engine(Quake II) with a lot of modifications, 32-bit high-resolution textures, 3D models used as architecture in maps, GLSL per-pixel lighting effects, parallax mapping etc etc.It's a mix of Quake III Arena and maybe a little of Unreal Tournament.Bought it because well...It was really cheap and I remember playing this game as a kid,when it was free,when I had crappy laptop.Kind of repetitive gameplay,I will probably play more though,because of achievements.Anyway the game's fine 6/10 in my opinion.Love the main menu theme :)
Lacks the punch that other FPS games like Unreal Tournament, Quake II, CSGO have. At least it is cheap and can be fun.
I used to play this game for free on Linux. Paying $1.00 is a bargain. The game doesn't make much sense, but I will say that it is a fun shooter game. There are not many types like this around where you get shot, respawn, and dive right back in within seconds. It's a fun battle everytime.
My only recommendation for the devs of this game would be to add better guns and items. Otherwise, if someone is wondering if they should play this because it looks outdated, just play it. It's a buck, buy one for your friends, and just have a fun battle royale over the weekend. Sometimes it's nice to get away from all the other games and chill with this one.

Edit: By better items I mean, it would be cool to implement a temporary few seconds of where everyone is at. Let's say someone picks up this item, they'll have an advantage for a few seconds for that entire team. Another idea would be a gun that has a few shots and each shot tracks the person you're shooting at. Mines, trip wires, those would be fun too.
Very neat design and atmosphere, low gore, just a fun shooter. Really worth to at least try out if you are new to such games - or you are looking for a humorous shooter without the gore and over exaggerated brutality. This game and Acid Arena are my favorite FPS games, they contrast and complement each other very well.
I became addicted to this game. I especially love the CTF matches where you need to be quick clever and sometimes sneaky to outwit your opponents. You can fight like a one man hero or cooperate with team members. This game is my relax in the evenings.
It's like my second home at home. I play this game more than any other game because of the community behind it and the in game experience.
I honestly can’t recommend this game for many reasons, as I already got bored after a few hours of repetitive gameplay. The servers are mostly empty, and the only option is playing with bots. The reason that kept me playing was the achievements. But beware, some of the achievements are in my opinion ridiculous, as there are six achievements that require 1k, 5k and 10k kills and another 1k, 5k and 10k games played. In CS:GO it would make sense, but definitely not in this game.
This game is pretty fun! I love blasting the Hell out of those alien bastards with the many different weapons strewn about the maps. There is also offline play which is really fun!
An issue I have is that the alien variety is pretty lacking.
Other than that, really fun game!
I saw this little gem by chance and since I liked what I saw, plus the apparent dedication of the devs and an existing loyal but small playerbase, I picked it up.
Alien Arena: Warriors Of Mars is a fun oldschool like Arena FPS in a more modern look, featuring martians, robots, drones and humans to dispose of.
It's got several gamemodes, online and offline play, you can host yourself, and all 3 DLC map packs are for free.
Btw: There are more servers around than I had guessed and players as well. Way more than steam shows because it's a cross-platform game.
No prob to find multiple matches.
After installing I just played a DM match with bots that I barely won, the bots are pretty good (several difficulties to choose from).
Update: You can boost with the strafekeys similar to like Quake, Quake 3 and dodge by tapping the movement keys twice like in UT. Ofc, I still have to get used to the game mechanics and figure some things out.
The regular price is surprisingly low and far too low to be on par with its actual gameplay value, especially now on sale it's so dirt cheap, there is no excuse not to buy it.
Hence, I bought right away another copy for a buddy. ^^
Just try it yourself; if you enjoy Arena FPS, you'll probably like it :)
I really wanted to like this game, but the sad reality is that this game is way too buggy to be released for 2 dollars on Steam. I know 2 dollars is pretty cheap, but keep in mind this game used to be FREE and Open Source. If the developers made the game more stable, I would enjoy it. Also kinda feels lacking in comparison to other free and open source games like Sauerbraten. It is not a BAD game but it is not a game that feels like a real product. It feels like a beta version of a game.
I am sorry developers, like I said, I had high hopes for this game as I never even played it when it was free due to it not working right on one of my Linux rigs. Sad!
Alien Arena: Warrors of Mars is a classic Warrors arena fps . It's kinda funny that warrors are really special even the name is. WARRORS... so much better than Warriors. It's the perfect Warrors game for trully warror gamers.
I've been part of the Alien Arena community for approximately 9 years, so I'll try to be as unbiased as possible. I'm a huge fan of retro sci-fi, so when I stumbled on Alien Arena it immediately caught my attention. I grew up on games like Catacomb 3D, Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake, Alien Arena's adherence to the arena fps format is one of the many reasons I have stuck around for so long.
AAA companies have a player base, Alien Arena has a community, the difference is huge! The developers actually take the time to help people out, listen to ideas for Alien Arena put forth by the community and best of all, they'll get in a play a game with you. I warn you against playing against the main developer, we don't call him the evil martian ruler for nothing!

Many tech changes have made the game more visually appealing and the latest iteration of the map lineup is amazing, especially considering this was all built atop the ID Tech 2 engine.
Through tweaking all aspects like direct damage/blast radius damage and ammo count many times over the years I think it is fair to claim that the weapon balance in Alien Arena is second to none.
There are some areas where Alien Arena is lacking, great graphics and smooth game play don't necessarily win over new players. There are no in-game tutorials, some of the movements, for example dodge chaining is quite advanced and takes a bit to master, if you don't know how to do this and hop on a server with seasoned players, you are going to feel like a rabbit in headlights.
There are sometimes issues getting the game to work well on some systems, using the console to tweak poorly documented cvars is not going to appeal to a new player. Having said that, Alien Arena is very capable of running well on high end and low end systems by using the video settings menu.
The main problem Alien Arena faces is a very small community of globally spread people, once upon a time this was not an issue and the community was prolific, these days it's hard to get a game, there are various things happening in the background to fix this.
The main stay of community members has been forums and irc. Many gamers are unlikely to be familiar with irc, this makes getting a game organised a little out of reach for newer players. The forums have been replaced in favour of steam, if we can move from irc to discord, this will put Alien Arena inline with how today's gamers communicate.
In summary: Alien Arena is an awesome game that I will continue to play for as long as it's in development. If you want to play a game built on a core of Arena FPS with lots of weird and original alien additions and spectacular alien environments, look no further.
its like unreal tournament 1999 and quake3 with better grafix had a really drunken nasty pig orgy and this was there child and what a wonderful child they had indeed and its got a built in irc client with all of your chatting needs if your one edgy boi and been on the internet for as long as i have this is the game for you
Great game improvements in the addictive alien arena game of the past. Very fun to play solo or on a server with others.

Of course I recommend this game. However, it does make my computer freeze and I have to do a hard reboot. Other than that, this game has been a Linux native title for so long I just had to purchase and recommend all purchase who use Linux to show some love for the devs!
If you're looking for a fast-paced, no-BS shooter, you've found it. The system requirements aren't as high as they have listed; I think they just didn't have a low enough computer to accurately figure out how minimal the requirements actually are, though the game looks outstanding even on really low settings.
I found the predecessor of this game while looking for Linux friendly games a decade ago. That's not an exaggeration. It looked way better than most of the other options and ran far more brilliantly.
The same still holds true for today. When I saw that it went up for sale, I knew I had to buy a copy and support the people who had given me hundreds of hours of gameplay.
I know that I've got hundreds of more hours to sink into it. Not sure if you want it? Buy it.
Note: It doesn't have local multiplayer or co-op at this time.
Awesome game, extremely fun old school fps shooter. I played alot of the game before it was released on steam and I'm glad to be coming back into it, the only downside is the very very small player base, however now this is on steam.. heres hoping to some new faces!
