Good potential, however it seems to be abandoned.
Edit: The bones of the game still remain, though it requires an internet connection security check to start.
I think this game is a hidden gem!
This would've been a great game 20 years ago!
I am not recommending it simply because there are better games out there that are similar albeit more expensive.
So I'll start with the good:
There are some nice features like voice overs for main quest characters so you don't have to read everything.
The tutorial is pretty decent.
Crafting is pretty intuitive and makes sense.
NPC's provide real advice or assistance. Not just random text to waste time reading.
Pretty easy to get started and find the things you are looking for.
Not too challenging to survive and the game tells you when you are hungry need water etc.
You have this scouter which marks resources animals etc on the map so you can see where they are and head towards them.
There is a lot of detail like they decontaminate you before leaving or entering a space station. Hunger and water meters etc.
The inventory and crafting systems make sense.
Now here are the things that make it a NO for me:
Ancient graphics: feels like a game from 1995.
Movement is clunky and for some reason buffers occasionally although they have First and Third person view just by tapping "T" which is nice for me.
The story just doesn't make sense to me: You came here on a colony ship but
There are already people on the planet? So they didn't revive everyone together?
Some towns are already established by the new comers that landed before but you still have to start off with stone and wood tools but once you get enough money you can buy tech gear at the exchange.
Anyway I got the game on sale for $6 I think, maybe it came in a bundle but with games like ARK, Empyrion, (this is very similar) and well pretty much any survival game why wouldn't you pick a game with better graphics that is more popular. If you like survival games and catch this on sale you can give it a try and if you don't like it return it in the first 2 hours., but I would recommend searching Youtube for a walk through so you can see what I'm talking about before you buy it.
Stars End is a game with a long and rocky history. Initially released in Early Access with ambitious promises, the game attempted to blend space exploration, base-building, and survival mechanics into one cohesive experience. Unfortunately, many of these mechanics have remained broken or incomplete for years, leaving players like myself frustrated and disillusioned.
For much of its life cycle Stars End struggled to meet the expectations set by its own ambitious premise. From clunky controls to frequent bugs and poorly optimized performance, the game seemed perpetually stuck in development hell. Yet, for all its faults, the community stuck around, hoping that the developers would eventually deliver on their promises. This hope was reignited when the team announced a major rework of the game engine. This update promised to address many of the long-standing issues that had plagued the game's servers, offering not just improved performance but also the offline and co-op experiences that players had been asking for since day one. Against all odds, this monumental update was delivered, and for the first time, it felt like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. The reworked engine brought several much-needed improvements, breathing new life into a game that many had all but written off. Performance was noticeably better, and the addition of offline and co-op modes made the game far more accessible and enjoyable, particularly for players who wanted to explore its expansive world with friends or on their own terms. The potential that had always been buried beneath Stars End's flaws finally began to shine through.
And then, just as things were looking up, the main developer decided to skip town. This abrupt departure has left the game’s future in limbo, with no clear road map or leadership to guide it forward. The betrayal felt by the community is palpable. After years of sticking it out through thick and thin, the rug was pulled out from under them just as progress was being made. Without its main developer Stars End will officially been abandoned with no further updates to come.
What’s most heartbreaking is that Stars End is a game that could have been truly special. The potential for an engaging, immersive Sci-Fi survival experience is still there, buried beneath its troubled history and uncertain future, masked by what appears to be a No Man's Sky clone. But potential alone is not enough. Without consistent development and a team committed to seeing it through, Stars End may remain a cautionary tale, a reminder of what happens when ambition outpaces execution.
For those considering diving into Stars End today, it’s a mixed bag. There’s something to be said for the improved gameplay brought by the engine rework, and for some players, that might be enough to justify giving it a shot. But buyer beware, the game’s future is clear: There will be no further updates and what you see is what you get.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!! The Devs gave up on it.
I would love to get a refund, but....
This game is abandoned.
It's hot garbage.
Terrible generic space game, the dialogue is cringe and the general graphical quality is pretty bad.
ABANDONWARE, no point in single player either.
The presentation on the store page is a total lie, I was presented a space survival shooter i got a unity asset flip with some of the worse primitive survival i have ever seen.
No updates in over a year so it appears to be dead as well
Just pass on it, this feels like a project some people started that had no business starting in the first place.
ABANDONED
The game is very slow and laggy. It could be good with improvements.
Scum. Don't buy
Game Is Broken. I can't Place A Workbench It just goes away Again and a again and yes it placed inside a claim zone i'm tired of playing crappy games like this one.
wow, is a negative crowd to have to crawl over. I have a few hrs in so far and yeah, it has bugs but there are some work arounds for some of them. Nothing game breaking yet. Grab their discord, hints and tricks and get informed before you play. Played through most of the game in self host mode then started another play through online. Most of the time at this point is only 5 players max. I was able to get it when it was on sale and im enjoying it. It does have along ways to go yet.
They work on more than one game so this one doesnt seem to be in high priority at the moment so dont expect any updates at this time. Have to look at it for the now moment. How much of it is playable at this time ? Ive played through as much as i thought was the wholeness of it. Visited the planets and home again, now back to building in my base. Is a slow snails pace game to enjoy so dont go grabbing alot of caffeine expecting a fast paced shoot em up adventure. Just put it in cruise mode and enjoy the slow early game adventure for what it is at this time. It has potential when the time comes.
was not a good time
