Very cool game. More of a shooter with souls-like elements than the other way around.
Leveling up is different, fixed cost, but increasing number of options (called traits). Each trait is found in the world by killing stuff, interacting with the world.
The campaign changes each time you play it, possibly presenting different bosses each time you play. There are different modes of play, which lets you explore and farm independently from the campaign.
It's somewhat short, but I liked it very much.
I’m playing Remnant on PC right now, and it’s my fourth time with this game. I’ve played it on PS4 and PS5, and honestly, it still hasn’t gotten boring.
The levels are amazing, the bosses are super fun, and it doesn’t feel as punishing as a Souls game, which is a nice balance. I love this game, and if you’re into action-packed games with a bit of challenge, it’s absolutely worth checking out!
very fun. especialy if you wanna play with your friend.
Really, if you want to convince someone to play a Souls-like game, Remnant is one of the best. The combination of very light weapons and swords makes this game special. Some stages may be repetitive or boring, but you will never get tired of shooting. Usually Souls-like games do not have a straightforward story and it is not very easy to figure out, but this game has tried as much as possible to tell an understandable story.
Honestly really enjoyable. The story is not bad, but not great either.
Gun play is enjoyable and you unlock a good verity (not including mods), bosses range from easy to pain in the ass (on normal mode).
Still some folks playing who'll join lobbies and give a helping hand.
Great game with thrilling combat, motivating skill development and crazy enemies (in a positive way). Manageable on normal and hard difficulty even for an average action player like me. Graphics and sounds are also very good and run quite smooth on my old PC, so... I'm totally happy!
Take Diablo, Dark Souls, The Division and Hellgate London, mix them in a bowl and you get Remnant from the Ashes. In the game, Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by an invasion of demonic beings from multiple dimensions, and humanity is on the brink of extinction. As a member of the Remnant, the last surviving group of humans, we set out to find the place where the evil beings came from and put an end to it. The gameplay is a shooter with a mix of action, RPG, and spiritual genres. Throughout our adventure we will slaughter many creatures and strengthen ourselves by collecting crafting materials. The game features a Dark Souls-style boss fight at the end of each level, and even the entrance to the boss is the same as in Dark Souls. (We pass through a grey, foggy door and enter the boss's location). The game has a dark, fairytale-like art style, similar to Darksiders and Vampyr. I think it's quite nice. You can play the game either as a single player or in co-op.
fun but grindy game
literally dark souls with guns, but the bosses that rely on adds suck
A beautiful game, but I feel like it's incomplete. There's something off about it, you can't tell if they want it to be Souls-like or a shooter. I don't know, the game feels lost.
this game is awesome and fun
not only the game even most of the random players you meet there are nice and helpful
at the start i dont know what to do and where to go just running around its kinda hard to understand at the beginning
until some random guy joined and shows me the way from the start
emote guide guy xD
slowly i started to understand the game /quests
+more fun to play with friends
get it on sales and you will not regret it
Remnant: From the Ashes is a solo/co-op game that combines Soulslike mechanics, third-person shooting, and procedurally generated maps. (Though I played solo only, so the following impressions won’t cover the multiplayer experience.)
One of the most interesting aspects of the game is its map design. Levels, including bosses and treasures, are partially procedurally generated by combining fixed "building blocks" or "map sets." Using the portal system, you can replay these randomized levels at any time, encounter different bosses, and collect new treasures. This feature adds replayability and is quite unique for a Soulslike game.
The gameplay focuses on shooting and dodging, with a stamina system similar to other Soulslike titles. It’s stimulating and fun, with a difficulty level that feels fair. The main challenges come from some particularly long levels where save points are spaced far apart, as well as boss fights that often include waves of smaller enemies swarming you. While these can be frustrating, the game doesn’t have death penalties like losing experience or currency, so you can rely on trial and error to progress. With patience and leveling up, the game becomes easier over time.
The enemy designs, especially the bosses, are a highlight and really appealed to me. However, the level design overall feels average, without any standout moments, which may be partially due to its procedurally generated nature.
On the downside, the graphics feel somewhat outdated, and the performance optimization leaves room for improvement. The music is unremarkable, and the story is pretty average and nothing special.
In summary, Remnant: From the Ashes is a solid choice for players who enjoy shooting-focused gameplay with Soulslike elements. While it has some flaws, its unique mechanics and replayability make it worth experiencing, especially if you have the patience to overcome its challenges.
this game is awesome playing with online players and i recommend this game for people who would want to experience it' it is super fun thinking, thinking of different types of battle strategy for game play
After 36 hours of playing it I reached to a conclusion, this game is much fun to play although it could turn into a masterpiece if they put more time and effort on it. Here is why:
- Level design of some bosses is quite defective
- Environmental design in each world is repetitive except the design of ward prime in the DLC
- To prevent the environment from getting repetitive devs have randomized the worlds maps so each player experience a different approach with less or more bosses which results in playing the campaign over and over unless playing the adventure mode to find the remaining bosses which is unfortunate because it could be managed through quest lines as a souls-like.
- Weapon design is quite brilliant imo. shooting and melee attacks are cool to perform all in all the gameplay is fun not brilliant but fun to spend time with your friends.
I recommend playing it especially with your friends up to 3 players simultaneously.
I find the graphics and gameplay very rewarding and addicting. I'm sad I'm just now finding out about this game. I don't at all consider it a soulslike.
Remnant is becoming one of my favorite franchises. Areas are vastly different and I can’t wait to see what the next one is going to look like. Enemy and boss designs are fantastic, you can tell they were thought through. Don’t compare this game to Dark Souls, just appreciate it on it’s own and you will not be disappointed.
Dark Souls with Guns but worse enemy and boss design, boring level design, and a mediocre story that just kinda ends.
Gunplay can be fun and you can play the entire game with 2 other friends. Kind of a mixed bag.
Bosses feel really cheap. They have mobs that will down you in a few hits while the boss does bullshitty AOE effects.
Meh.
Get it on sale.
Reviewing it purely on terms as a souls-like (how it's described), I don't recommend it. The regular gameplay is good, if not a bit linear. The bosses are, for me, where it really declines. Almost every single boss summons waves and waves of enemies. The result being that there are no 'fair' fights (1 on 1), only fights where it's you, the boss, and the 80 minions that they spawn. Bosses felt like a chore, rather than fun. Dropped it roughly halfway through, since it wasn't fun for me anymore.
Great game. Imagine Dark Souls mixed with Left 4 Dead and Zombie Army Trilogy.
An excellent game being both a souls-like and an FPS. The two genres are combined extremely well, allowing for close, mid, and long-range builds. The encounters are challenging and fun, the story is good, and the art style is cohesive an well thought out. The RPG leveling and skills work very well and allow a focus on whatever build you want
Overall 10/10 worth your money
This game feels like it wanted to do so much but maybe way too much that it eventually didn't polish any of them.
Gunplay is solid, melee moveset is well balanced, but movement speed is really slow combining with the fact that maps are unnecessarily broad, making it a drag to continue playing it.
Enemies have fair attack patterns, but bosses are kinda mid which they all require pretty much the same strategy to beat, especially they don't have much by themselves so most of them annoy you by summoning minions.
If you are into exploration than the map is probably not for you. This game does have decent environment design, but the fact only materials are scattered around the map gives very little motivation to explore them.
I didn't really get attached to the lore of this game, it's not much but it serves its purpose. You don't have much reasons to go back to the shelter unless you want to upgrade something. Making the NPCs you interact with in this world very invisible.
I typed a lot of complain but I'd still give this game 7/10. It is kinda fun but lacks anything memorable to me, I would still recommend people to play it.
this game fucking sucks the bullshit RNG quests and the crap find the bullshit guns and parks no i fucking regreate buying this crap so damn much
and the biggest fuck you ever about this game is the bullshit that is you Can't pause so everything can kill your ass if you have to do stuff
Finally able to play Remnant 2 i loved this one game was playable for days wanting to complete every little thing
Nice. After completing the tutorial and link epic account so that I can play with my friends. Now 100% I crash with the same stupid message "Assertion failed: [File:Unknown] [Line: 3417] Pak Decompression failed."
Wow. Such a good game. Would definitely Send the crash report and Restart again, again, again, and again.
P/s: I'll update again once I clear the bug and be able to play the game.
Beat the game on Nightmare with a friend 17 hours, the game was really fun had no issues just found that an end game boss was wildly different from the rest of the game. Not sure why but it was still fun overcoming that challenge.
Really wanted to like this game but it misses inputs left and friggin right. tried new keyboard and mouse and driver updates and made no difference. none of my other games lag on inputs like this does
Dark Souls with guns and better multiplayer.
ashen one, to be unkindled is to be a vessel for souls. Sovereignless souls will become thy strength. I will show thee how. ashen one, bring me souls, plucked from their vessels
Another game I started on PS but never finished due to being a father, but I finally finished it on Steam.
It's great fun making a spontaneous trio and grind the hell out of this game. I would say it is similar to Borderlands, but just little. Every world and monster in this game is incredibly detailed. The only downside is that the main story ends after about 22 hours. There are many more alternatives to explore and have fun online. I highly recommend to have this game on your wish list and buy it in discount.
Love the atmosphere, love the plot, love the gameplay mechanics. I wish there were more plot-lines and DLCs, but I guess that's what the other games in the series are for.
I never want to enter this game ever again. It's just pure suffering.
The game is just bland, repetitive and boring.
Great game!!! Running nice in steam deck!!!
Someone can tell me about the DLC run well?
really fun to play, beautiful open world game and lots of tough monsters to kill
Really fun 3rd person shooter to play with friends. Combat -great, feels a little clunky at times but satisfying. Story -nothing special, mediocre. Pretty cool maps. Mix of bosses. Soulslike mechanics -but wouldn't say it's completely soulslike. Builds - nothing special.
Poor map layout, slow and repetitive gameplay.
Has the clunkiness of DS1 without the substance.
Epic loot and shoot with story elements.
After the opening act, the game reveals it's true hand: This is mostly a game about assaulting tribal villages with a hunting rifle and a Mauser. I don't think that was necessarily the intention, but it sure is the game they made. There are theoretically other guns in the game, but I never found anything that felt as straight-forwardly effective. And if they didn't want it to be about attacking tribal villages, well, they shouldn't have made the primary enemies for three of the four zones be either tribal villagers or indistinguishable from them. There are some bits where you fight other things, though.
The game doesn't have anything new or interesting to say, but it lands on firmly Fine. This is perhaps one of the greatest podcast games of all time. If you need a game that engages just enough of your brain for your ADHD to chill out while you listen to two people talk about Field Of Dreams, a movie you only vaguely remember hearing about one time, this game is ideal.
combat is extremely satisfying. sometimes switching between melee and ranged feels clunky but when you're in it it's so fun.
I have completed the game in less than 12 hours. It is fun but definitely only if you pick it up at a steep discount.
Dark Souls
i found this game very slow moving for your character but for the boss monsters don't have this problem, i was thinking this game would be hard not stupidly hard and very much not wanting to play it. and i will not play again unless i forget my brain.
Fast paced action. Good scenery, creepy enemies. Good pace to the game.

I purchased this as a part of the ultimate bundle when the bundle cost £62.14, (it's dropped even cheaper just a couple of days after I bought it, annoying but irrelevant.) making the effective price i paid for the game £25.72.
My review will be in scope of this price because that's how I review games - Price Point against the total enjoyment received from the game.
This game is one I cannot, in good faith, recommend at £25.72.
The entire game plays and feels like a failed attempt to merge a soulsborne game with over the shoulder third person shooter mechanics from an action horror in the RE4(original)/RE5 era.
Where it succeeds
- Interesting story concept.
- Great art direction in the world design.
- Fantastic enemy art designs.
Where it fails
- Gunplay is weak.
- Enemies are bullet sponges.
- Enemy difficulty and tactics are extremely poor and the game often resorts to swarming the player as a substitute for difficulty.
- Overcoming enemy challenges does not feel rewarding in the slightest.
- Story NPC dialog can often feel wooden and out of place. (The first example to hit me was Ace and her "You're not from around here are you?", in a sealed bunker with less than 20 people an outsider should be absolutely obvious and makes me question the competency and maturity of both the writer and the dialog editors. This level of writing is consistently just below average with every story NPC.)
- The character progression stat system is lacklustre and does not feel connected to the power of the player.
- Equipment choices during the first 9 hours are extremely lacking. (this may change later in the game and I'll update if that's the case)
- While unique game-region aesthetics have solid and cohesive art direction, areas within those regions are not distinctively designed and can become labyrinthine making it too easy to get turned around and requiring you to constantly check your mini-map.
Will I continue playing, and why?
Yes I will continue playing, but I am coaxed forward only by intrigue in the game design as to why other people have rated this game so highly. From the reviews I've read before I purchased it received a rough 8.5/10 in average and has many fans that have sung its praises since release in 2019.
So it should be clear I feel disappointed/mislead by these reviews. So far it's a solid 6/10 for me so far, a "just above average", technically fine, visually decent, a moderately interesting story that is not entirely well told but can be pieced together in a way that has unfortunately been done far more competently by other dev teams in the past.
To give some concept of scope some of my fav games I play on steam have the following play figures:
Game Name - Hours of Play
- Black Desert - 3,849.7
- No Man's Sky - 2,555.9
- Warframe - 2,074.4
- Terraria - 918.3
- Skyrim - 815.3
- Borderlands 2 - 628.7
- Destiny 2 - 516.4
- Dark Souls: PtdE - 412.8
- SkyrimSE - 323.7
- Starbound - 316.4
- Project Zomboid - 315.7
[*]Elden Ring - 246.5
Safe to say I play games at every difficulty point, I don't make my judgements from a place of elitism or "skill-issue". This game, thus far, isn't hitting right and feels a touch undercooked even at the discounted price of £25.72 (RRP £30.99)
Purchase at your own discretion.
Will provide an update if my opinions/view change at the endgame or 100 hour (if I play it that much) marks.
I like the shooting and combat, but I always keep getting pushed away by just the setting of the game. As much as I enjoy the shooting and combat loop, the actual environments, enemies, characters bosses etc.. it all feels corporate and lifeless? It doesn't feel like a real experience but like something cobbled together off of an asset store even though I know this likely had a lot of effort and love put into it. Just the generic enemy being "the root" and making everything look like a tree ent in a concrete jungle but glowing red so you know it's evil just feels so detached from being an enemy that it just feels like an excuse. It's hard to describe exactly what's going on but maybe it's something about the art direction? Maybe the writing suffered somewhere to appeal to investors?
I don't know what it is, but end of the day I still recommend the game for the shooting, but I just lose interest after around 8 hours or so and need like a year before wanting to really give this another shot.
Gunplay and general combat is very fun. Very short and limited though. Probably more worth to just get the sequel.
Wanted to enjoy this game as an avid souls fan, but it just feels incredibly half-baked and repetitive. The combat is OK but every boss fight follows the same formula: projectile/ground aoe spam with a constant stream of adds. It's just not fun, from a single players perspective, at least.
Be prepared to do a trillion runs if you want a 100% completion.
Some achievements are based on luck, luck that you might not have.
It ultimately just petered out into a mid experience
The world is vibrant, amazing and there are fantastic lore snippets for weapons, gear, creatures and bosses that all just goes nowhere
The main plot is half-baked at best, with the story-focused DLC being almost entirely nonsensical
The maps and arenas are baller, but the RNG related to certain achievements is hair-tearingly frustrating
Some of the boss fights are honestly BS in either their entirety or in a specific move they can utilize - looking at you stupid beetle bracelets.
I have to fantasize about the ongoings of the world because 9/10 of the characters you can interact with say NOTHING of substance
Not looking forward to its sequel - this game had a nice little title to it, "From the Ashes" while the other is just Remnant II. Wonder what fantastic level of inspiration that one came from.
Remnant is a fun game best experienced in singleplayer. There are a few very annoying and prominent bugs still in the game that seem to be present only in multiplayer. The combat is fun, aiming feels especially smooth to the point where it's given me the opportunity to pull off some of the most insane headshot chains I did on any game. Enemies are for the most part fun, and when they aren't it's because they're bullet sponges. This is no less due to their awful enemy scaling system which punishes you for upgrading.
The story may as well not exist and the graphics are good, all upgrade systems largely suck but there are a few cool items that aren't just small and arbitrary stat changes. When you pull up on the scene, assuming you're as good as me, you'll tear some ass sideways. Pop-Pop-Pop-Pop-Pop you hear with a delay because my shot placements are faster than the speed of sound, and five enemies are down, and not the clinical kind. Especially fun are the enemies that try to pretend they can out-aim me, they can't. I leave about a d*ck-sized hole in their foreheads which, considering the girth of my member, is quite substantial. They can never recover.
One of the DLCs is about on-par with the base game while the other one sucks ass, the one with the artificially difficult Iola Queef. The randomly generated map makes sure you'll hate every second of finding something or someone in particular and discourages replaying the game, as well as the metal system. Just like Dead Cells, this is a game best beaten once, but boy oh boy is that one time fun.
"Soulslike with guns" is an apt description. A lot of fun with friends.
