Firewood is a 2D adventure game with psychological horror elements.
The game tells the story of an old man who has lost his wife years ago and is still having troubles with his past.
After his wife's funeral, he decides to move to a cabin far away from town in order to escape from the haunting memories of the past and his country's opressive regime.
Yet one day, events take an unexpected turn and he finds himself in a dark journey.
Will he be able to find the redemption he seeks?
-Side scrolling 2D adventure game with hand drawn graphics.
-Grim and atmospheric music.
-A twisting story.
Firewood is our first project and it took us five months to complete.
We created everything from scratch. Graphics, music and all. Thanks!

Awful on so many levels. Using the on screen in game instructions I found myself in multiple unsolvable loops. It was one of the most painful games I've played in years. Nothing made sense, Has the game designer who made this considered alternative employment.
I don't think English is the native language of the developers. This game is trying to be a "thriller" but the only "thrills" are minor jump scares where a piano gets clanged and the monitor flashes showing grotesque pixel gore, monsters or ghosts. I don't understand the story at all and that's all on the developer. Skip this one, this game is little more than an amateur production.
A short little game with an interesting mystery. A dystopic corporate universe, an old man, a rebellious wife, and three imps out to get you. I liked it. The play loop got a little repetitive, doing the same thing over and over, and I got stuck at least twice - literally stuck, I couldn't move the character, however rebooting the game only takes a second, and you're never far behind your last safe. I recommend for those who like indie horror.
Even tho i dislike horror games, this one actually pulled me in. A great psychological horror game with a depressing story, I recommend it strongly.
This game is a real mixed bag. The art itself is better than the lot and dialogue (definitely could have used an editor) combined, I was really into it. The music was also gorgeous, I wish there was more of it.
The mechanics are a bit weird. There's no option to save as you go, and when you exit and rejoin the game you have to reset your monitor size and master volume each time.
The controls are A and D instead of the arrow keys which is pretty different, and the inventory stays open when you leave a room.
I liked this a lot. The atmosphere is excellent, and I was really impressed with the sound and music used. The story is the reason to play this, and although it doesn't wrap up with everything explained, it gives you a lot to think about.
Recommended.
Decent story told with a very good atmosphere. Liked the Silent Hills surreal vibe the game gave.

This game is only worth buying if you can find it for under a Euro.
+ Soundtrack is nice.
- Game is extremely short (1 hour).
- Story isn’t any good.
- Puzzles are easy, if you can even consider them puzzles.
- Autosaving should not be a thing in this game, just let me continue from where I stopped playing.
- Lack of controls customization. You move with A/D and press E to use; arrows should be allowed.
- Feels like the game was translated using Google Translate.
Rating: 2/10
An interesting story. It's mostly just a walking sim though I did enjoy playing.
It's a bit tedious, like a walking simulator but it only takes an hour so there's that...
Interesting little story I suppose. The "casual horror" tags would best describe this.
I don't think there is controller support so prepare your left hand to constantly hold either A or D with an occasional press of E
Firewood is a side-scrolling horror adventure game that was crafted by the two friends that make up publisher/developer Frymore. Taking them five months to complete, the duo created the graphics, soundtrack, and narrative by themselves. If that's truly the case, then it's fair to say that the visuals are pretty impressive, and they carry with them a charm reminiscent from Distraint. That said, the visuals are about the only thing remotely good about this release, as Firewood is a testament to tedium.
The game itself takes about an hour to complete; I have a bit more time in it because I got so bored during my playthrough that I actually got up to go do the dishes. The gameplay consists of simply walking left and right, entering a room, collecting an item, leaving the room, and moving on. All the while transitioning between the past and present, and trying to piece together a convoluted story that involves anthropomorphic deer, rabbits, dogs, and other weird creatures. There are some "puzzles", but only one of them requires something other than finding scattered items and putting them in a well designated area.
To put it bluntly, Firewood is boring. The name is boring and has nothing to do with the actual game. The gameplay is as repetitive and tedious as it could possibly be. The story makes no sense whatsoever, and even if it did it's bland and uninteresting. Sadly, there's just no fun to be had here. If you're looking for a good 2D side-scrolling horror game, check out Home, Lone Survivor, or Distraint; all of which are within the same price range, and even cheaper actually, than this test of patience.

Beat the game with 8/8 achievements without trying in under 90 minutes. Only 12% of users have beaten the game.
That said, it's hard to be too harsh on a game you paid $1.50 for.
Firewood is an interesting concept, but ultimately a deeply flawed in execution little horror/puzzle game. The bits of the story that are revealed to you as you piece together one man's past sins are enough to keep you engaged, but the end may leave you disappointed. You're given just enough info to make you want to know the details of what happened, but not enough to actually answer all the questions it brings up by the time it comes to a (fairly abrupt) close.
The art is unique, but may not appeal to everyone, due to the main character looking rather square and not displaying any emotion despite the supposedly traumatic things he's being confronted with. While there are some very nice lighting effect details, the overall dimness makes the game a bit of an eyestrain, and makes it difficult to find certain doors and objects. This is saved somewhat by the exclamation point that alerts you to them, though the doors on the ends of corridors left me wandering back and forth for a couple of minutes, because they are essentially invisible, and you need to go to the very edge of the screen to get the alert.
The dialogue is in DESPERATE need of an editor. Awkward phrasing, improper grammar, and outright typos may pull you out of the game, and in one case renders a phrase pretty much indecipherable.
When it comes to the gameplay, it primarily consists of walking. Since this game is on a 2-D plane, this means you will spend a large chunk of your play-through holding down A or D until you're given a prompt. The puzzles are absurdly straightforward to the point of feeling like more of a stalling tactic than an integrated part of the experience. In addition to this, I feel like the Devs were aware that the game is very short, and were worried about that fact. Unfortunately, the way they tried to compensate for this was to not only require a fair bit of backtracking, but make the character move painfully slow. Instead of adding to atmosphere, this makes it feel like you are slogging through to get to the next plot point.
I wanted to like this. I enjoy psychological horror, as well as abstract/atmospheric experiences and puzzle games. All the themes appealed to me, but the end result was too disjointed and unsatisfying to recommend.
Summary:
(longer version below)A game worth getting on sale, especially for badge and achievement collectors. The story wasn't too bad, but the game itself was very simple and not fully polished.

In-Depth:
Firewood is a 2D game based around the exploration of what seems to be a hotel. While solving the puzzles within it you'll face various characters which fill in some parts of the story. You also experience flashbacks which reveal your past.
I am somewhat on the fence about this game. Throughout the entirety of the game there are small grammatical errors. The story was somewhat unclear, especially the ending. The gameplay feels a bit stretched, with empty rooms and very basic maps(go all the way left, go all the way right) - this, coupled with slow walking speed, makes the game tiresome at times.
The puzzles were as simple as remembering several numbers or collecting all the items on the floor. Admittingly, the "listen" puzzle could've been good had they not revealed the entire passcode on the walls. There are some jumpscares which are okay if you're using headphones, which I DO recommend.
Among other things I also dislike that there's no proper save function and the font of letters(picked up in the game) is hard to read. Your lighter turns off on its own when exiting rooms and there are redundant interactions with your surroundings that results in the repeating of dull descriptions.
It is a short game with no replayability value, and I notice it's similar to Home, a 2D exploration/horror game I've thoroughly enjoyed. Both have obtainable achievements and trading cards. I would suggest this game only on sale. If you want to pay full price, buy Home instead.
Firewood is a good-looking pixel game with interesting puzzles, however it's also quite linear. It's psychological horror with some minor jumpscares.
The story unravels as you continue into the game and while not everything makes sense, it has a satisfying ending.
Would recommend this if you want to play something short during an afternoon or so.
This game is only really worth it if you buy it on sale. Even though it was short, it felt like it dragged on due to lack luster puzzles and repetative walking and collecting of items. Interacting with the environment did help naturally build the background, which could have been fleshed out more. The pacing of the narrative would have benefited from a better buildup, it started slow and then speed up all at once unusually, but was interesting. Dialouge felt clunky and did not seem gramatically correct at certain points. Jumpscares were cheap, but the music and ambiance did keep you costantly tense. Overall, an mediocre game that had some good qualities, but could have been improved.
I really liked this game overall, but there are certainly some flaws.
Firstly, I was amazed at how fast I beat this game. It went very fast and the story, while really engaging, felt like it hit the climax and end point really suddenly. I went from knowing nothing to knowing everything.
The atmosphere is the best part about this game. It is really tense and somber throughout, really inspiring a sense of dread as you play through the game. However, it must be said that the English translation needs some work. Multiple times there were strange spelling and grammar errors that completely killed the mood and made me laugh out loud.
I can certainly recommend it based on what's here, but it's way too short. I honestly thought about refunding it because it went by so fast. And I didn't try to play it quickly either, I read everything and really got into it, but it still went by quickly. I would love to see an expansion or something to add to this game.
Also the walk cycles are so hilarious it hurts.
Good artwork with a creepy atmosphere. It's a very casual game since there's nothing particularly challenging about it while telling a short story using a point/click style of interface. As much as it had going for it, overall it didn't leave much of a lasting impression. I found myself a bit bored due to the excessive walking while repetitively exploring rooms in various floors of a building. It would have been better if there was more story being consistently offered along the way as incentive to explore but it felt too dry at times. At least in terms of the gameplay, I had no issues in terms of glitches/bugs - but I do wish they'd not make the items in your inventory so transparent since it's hard to see what's there. If you like these kind of games, it's probably worth it if you find it on sale.
Firstly, If you love playing puzzle games and want to get a little scared, this game might be perfect for you to spend some time. As for the low price of this game I'd totally recommend this game.
pros
*Quality game with low price
*It might be scary sometimes
*Interesting story and also interesting characters
cons
*It could have longer story and gameplay
*less walking maybe?
There's absolutely nothing I can say about this game that can do its experience justice
At its core it's a story driven haunted house of a man's psyche as he is forced to look back on his life by mysterious forces
It's very short, but given the price that isn't too much of a negative
I can only hope it becomes successful so I can see what these devs can do with more resources
