The Groundskeeper always keeps his graveyard full. Not by having clients, but by killing all the people in town and throwing their body parts into open graves! One night, however, he murdered the parents of two kids who saw the whole awful act take place. Now, they've sworn to get revenge using science... and shovels! Together, these siblings hatched a plan to go into the graveyard, dig up body parts, and use science to turn them into an army of monsters to tear the Groundskeeper limb from limb.
It's not going to be easy, however, for the Groundskeeper patrols the graveyard constantly with his lantern, searching for trespassers whom he can relentlessly chop into pieces with his meat cleaver. As they traverse his nightmarish graveyard, the siblings will also have to use their shovels to battle hordes of the undead, skeletons, blobs, axe-wielding psychopaths, ghosts, mummies, and much more. Hey, it's a graveyard; who else would you expect to be hanging around there late at night?
Grave Chase features old school 2D pixel art, a steady flow of spooky new enemies throughout the game, 31 stages of increasing difficulty, additional unlockable game modes for even more replay value, over 50 achievement medals, Steam trading cards, special power-ups, an all original soundtrack, windowed or fullscreen play, gamepad support, and you can choose to play as the girl or boy while the other stays home and builds monsters using the body parts you collect.
Can you survive this Grave Chase through the month of October, culminating on Halloween?

Roger Barr always makes really fun games.
Not really much to say; it's arcade style, which is a refreshing change in pace. It's quite atmospheric. Game control is quite user friendly. At a quick glance, it seems like it might be easy? Oh hell no. You have to really formulate strategies and get ready to discard them at the drop of a hat. Any hat. It's quite challenging and very addicting.
Also, I like the achievements. You can tell a lot of love went into this game. Overall, it's fun as hell. Aggravating at times, but it's still a blast!
every halloween i like to maintain this tradition of coming back to this game and giving the very difficult final level a shot,
and every year i always come to fail at doing that because this game has abhorrently punishing level design that would make any person rage and give up (especially towards the final few levels)
do not fall for this game's whims you will become very sad and angry

I'm not even sure if Rog still reads reviews or not. Big fan of I-Mockery here and this game is fun. It's a great tribute to Halloween and "feels" like 16 bit games of the era. I can't recommend it for more than a $1 because it's so tedious. Yes, there's extra modes available once you beat the game. But, I was very disappointed that there wasn't anything that broke up the monotony of the levels. This game desperately needed some mini-games, bonus stages, and an actual boss fight.
I love it! It's very fun, has great music, the gameplay feels inspired by some of my favorite retro games, and its only 5 bucks. I recommend checking it out.
Arcade gameplay that evokes Pac-Man & Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Fantastic aesthetic. 31 levels to run through and they are progressively challenging by incrementally adding in new gameplay elements such as monsters with varying abilities that switch up your strategy on the fly or Power Ups that turn you into the million dollar boy or girl wonder. Don't get cornered, and mind where you shovel your dirt. Some folks don't take too kindly to grave robbers. This is a Gem being offered for pocket change, don't sleep on this.
Update: Yep, still a blast. At Day 14, there's still new monsters being introduced and based on achievements there are still more. I've been jamming through one to two levels per day based on how I'm feelin' and it's been a positive experience. Recommend this one to pass the time. Would love to see this get a port to mobile, it'd crush it on the play store.
I could definitely see this in an arcade box if it were made when those were big. Great art, game-play, soundtrack. Its got it all.

One of my favorite games of the last 10 years or so. without a doubt worth the $6 asking price. though anything from the mind of RoG "Roger Barr" is worth the money.
Grave Chase is a simple-to-learn strategy title that involves a brother and sister trying to avenge their murdered parents by digging up body parts buried throughout each graveyard and using science to bring them to life. You'll have to alternate between digging, fighting off a small army of monsters, and avoiding the Gravekeeper, as if he was that skeleton whale from Bubble Bobble (he kinda is). In addition to fast-paced gameplay and a frustrating-yet-fun level of challenge, GC's 2D pixel art and quirky charm are clearly inspired by one of my favorite childhood games for the SNES - Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
There are as many levels as there are days in the month of October, so, like, more than 27, but fewer than 32 (unless it's a leap year, I think) and you'll probably start dying on day three. By collecting all the parts within each stage, you'll be rewarded with a dancing whatever made from them. It's unpleasantly cute, or, perhaps, just unpleasant. I don't know. One was a jar with two torsos and a foot attached to it. Decide for yourself.
The graveyards become larger and more mazelike with each new night, and, eventually, it all turns into a game of Pac-Man as a wide variety of monsters are constantly emerging from the ground, the obstacles, the hedges, and all around the borders of the stage to group up into a Benny Hill train of headaches if you don't take the time to clear them away. Meanwhile, the Gravekeeper himself is immune to all attacks, is sensitive to nearby sounds, hates having dirt thrown at him, loves cats, and will temporarily charge towards you when spotted. The objective may be to dig up body parts, but this must be balanced alongside defeating enemies and avoiding the chop-happy chubster.
New monsters and obstacles appear at the start of most levels to help keep things fresh (or as fresh as dead can be) and trying to keep track of their abilities will lead to many, many mistakes. There were several times where I'd only need to find one more part, and I would end up dying because I allowed a slime to follow me into a dead end, or I swung at a psycho before he was vulnerable.
Much like any proper arcade-styled experience, high scores can be saved and shared with others, but not in Normal mode. Normal mode was more than enough for a filthy casual like me, and it's your best bet for earning achievements, but if you're just looking for a challenge, you're welcome to try the Nightmare and Speed Modes.
The music isn't bad, though not memorable, and that can be typed about the characters, as well. I like the kids, and it's nice to know that The Gravekeeper has loved ones of his own, but that's about it. None of them stand out in any way. No dialogue or unique gestures. Who knows, maybe we'll get to learn more about them in the sequel... if there's a sequel. I'd like a sequel.
This game is fun and hard as hell. You run around trying to dig crap up only to have everything agaiinst you and constantly swarming you and then finally you got chopped up by a guy with a meat cleaver. But then you wanna keep going again and again. Fun stuff!
So much to like about this game, but it is WAY TOO DIFFICULT to enjoy. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze.

Gotta admit, it's a really fun and addictive game about digging graves and fighting ghouls. It's pretty reminiscent of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, an awesome game that I still play to this day on my Sega Genesis. You should totally check it out btw. So far I find this game to be very enjoyable. It's definitely worth buying. Only problem I have with it, is the difficulty. It gets ridiculusly difficult in the later stages. But other than that, it's a good game.
What a delight! Not much playtime on this one yet but I'm absolutely loving it. It most reminds me of an amped-up Night Stalker, if you happen to remember that Intellivision classic. With a hint of Berzerk. Only with powerups.
If this were an arcade game I'd be pumping pocketfuls of tokens into it. Retro fans, pick this one up.

If you ever seen/heard/played ABOBO'S BIG ADVENTURE, then you already know the level of polish these devs put into work.
This game is no exception, it's very tightly controlled, the style is very fitting for the theme, so much is good here.
Your goal is to dig graves, and find a certain number of body parts per level.
All the while being chased down by skeletons, bats, crows, slimes, zombies, the list goes on and on.
Just when you think the game has added the last " new" thing, they add another thing.
ON top of all that stuff going on above, you have the groundskeeper, this is what mixes up the style.
The whole time you're playing, he;s trying to sniff you out, it plays ALOT like a stealth game.
They layer on more and more ( for instance, the graveyard changes, and the groundskeeper is more alert, faster, etc
And then some of the enemies work intandem with him , too!
The levels have the same map layout for each of the 31 stages ( one for each day in October )
However, the placement of things such as body parts, enemies, even what type of grave you're digging are all randomized, ( if you lose all your lives, it will not be the swme graveyard on the continue)
The good news here, the game saves your day's progress, and has multiple modes ( think death road to canada, and you're on the right track )
This is a pretty dang good game, I highly recommend it to anyone wishing for a fun and challenging puzzle/action/stealth spook-fest.
A very well polished and well executed game. Each level is a day and as the days progress the difficulty increases in terms of the enemies encountered, number of items to collect and the awareness of the evil groundskeeper. You need to formulate strategies on how to beat different enemies in the normal mode before you can handle the nightmare mode.
A very challenging and addictive game with great level design and very spooky graphics right in time for the Halloween.
This game is waaay too spooky. I don't know if I can handle it.
But no, actually it's hellova fun. With all the different types of enemies and power-ups in each of the levels, along with the different stage designs, it really keeps you on your toes. The controls handle well and the animations are fluid and bouncy. The Sount track is energetic and catchy, and the pixel art is really nicely done too. Difficulty isn't too easy or too hard. Gives just the right amount of frustration for victories to be satisfying but also isn't too hard to be enjoyed.
All in all, it's good, clean, spooky fun!

Jumped right on that one because I love the art style. (Full disclosure: I know the artist personally.)
The game is a fun, fast-paced arcade experience with a hint of Pac-Man at its core. The player needs to dig up graves to collect bodyparts without being caught by the groundskeeper or the ever-increasing number of monsters infesting the graveyards. Loads of additional enemy types and power-ups are introduced as the levels go by, keeping the experience fresh and challenging. There are lots of levels, and it takes longer and longer to get through them, so I'm assuming that I'll pour many hours into this game before beating it. I'm assuming that the game was created with gamepad controls in mind, but I'm playing it on a keyboard, which works totally fine, especially because custom keybinding is possible.
In my opinion, Grave Chase is absolutely worth its full price, especially if you like arcade-y gameplay and gory pixel art.
Definitely worth the price of admission; a fast, frenetic, arcade-style game. Don't let the cutesy graphics fool you, this game is tougher than it looks, but damn if it isn't enjoyable.
