I'm a fan of puzzle games. Here is a list of what I like about the game and what I don't:

        PROS
        +Some puzzles can be challenging
        +Nice graphics
        +Atmosphere
        +Native Linux port

        CONS
-Buggy: this is my main issue. Sometimes the game freezes or another weird bug happens which doesn't allow you to pick up stuff. Incredibly annoying, since you have to start from the previous checkpoint.
-Checkpoints are a joke. Should have the option to save so that you can pick up from where you left.
        -Running is slooow
-Forced to listen to the dialogs (no way to skip past them or fast-forward)

Pity to give the game a thumbs down, because the puzzles are pretty fun.

It actually starts out pretty decent. The terminal puzzles are a welcome change from many other similar games. They're a decent challenge too, but as others have stated already, the quality of this game gradually decreases. It actually looks like they didn't bother proofreading everything. Some of the terminals in the later part of the game contain a lot of typos for instance.

What really lets Tartarus down, though, is the horrible ending. Why you would introduce someone chasing you with a gun who can kill you instantly in a game that really doesn't like to give clues about what you're supposed to do baffles the mind. There is a small clever mechanic used here that will be your key to beating the game, but frustration will likely win out for many players.

Tartarus is one of those titles that comes up on Steam sales for such an absurdly cheap price that you think 'I'm probably not going to like that, but I'll risk it'.

So while I was expecting not to like it, I wasn't expecting the cavalcade of terrible horror isolation tropes that hit you in the face in the first ten minutes:

        * You're isolated in a dark industrial setting.
        * A disaster has happened but you don't know what.
        * There's a disembodied voice on the radio telling you what to do.
        * You get a crummy torch that flickers and is unreliable.
        * You have to crawl UNBELIEVABLY SLOWLY through poorly lit ventilation ducts.
        * Dramatic music! When climbing a ladder!

And so on and so forth. These I could forgive as trope may be cliche but they serve a purpose. The thing that made me quit and uninstall was the shamelessness of the arbitary gameplay lengthener (AGL) mechanics.

I'm in a room. There is an access card on one desk. Ten feet away on the other side of the room is a computer. I have to type the number from the card into the computer. Games where the priority isn't jerking you around will have you pick up the card and then allow the computer interaction without any additional input. Games trying to be more interactive may throw in few extra steps:

        > pick up card
You pick up the access card.
        > use access card with computer
You unlock the computer terminal using the access card.

Tartarus' take is that you should write down the code on a piece of paper and then manually type it in . There's actually a message in the opening advising you to have a pencil and paper handy.

This is so incredibly lazy that I noped out.

It's a shame, because I don't think I've ever played a game with an Australian protagonist before, and there's a lot of amusing narrative potential in that scenario. Oh well.

You've probably heard this in many other reviews, but here's another. Game's not that bad, until the final encounter. You spend the entire game poking at terminals, with the odd environmental puzzle. There's math, morse code, networking, a few other things. Then it takes a complete nosedive. You're given an objective, no hint as to where it is or what to do, but that isn't out of place for this game. It's par for the course. Explore, find information, and go at it. Oh, except this time there's a lunatic with a gun who will one shot you. That's new. And terrible. And really ruins it.

Generally a good sci-fi game with solid graphics, challenging puzzles and no weapons (at least for you). You'll have to figure out for yourself how the puzzles work and where to go next on the spaceship. The game uses a random algorithm for the puzzles. So a solution will bring you nothing as soon as it comes to numbers. These change with every game run.

However, some of the texts have been somewhat disregarded (or Google has been consulted). The end of the game is unfortunately almost unfair, because the AI was programmed too simple. You get noticed - you are dead. The AI hits you, no matter where you are, no matter if you run or not... and it only needs one hit, after that it's time to reload the checkpoint. Can be very frustrating if you want to finish this game 100%, because you have to do it without dying. A recommendation when it is on sale.

Oh man, I was on such a good streak. Five positive reviews in a row. Then along comes Tartarus.

You're alone on a space ship. Alarms are going off. Things are broken and you need to fix them. Sound familiar?

Tartarus does an ok job with the atmosphere (read: it's dark), but its graphics and environments look like they're generic assets copied and pasted from an online store. Despite the sci-fi location they're uninspired. Unimaginative.

The writing is a mess, as the characters act in really bizarre, inexplicable ways.

But the biggest offender is the gameplay. The puzzles are absurdly obtuse. For computers that are supposed to be futuristic they have UIs from the 1960s. Even a basic shell would've made things so much better. I constantly found myself typing "ls" or "cat" or hitting the up arrow and nothing worked like it should. This is what happens when someone who's never used one imagines how a command line system might work, and then proceeds to build a game around it.

The ending sequence is also a sort of stealth quick time event, and it is truly awful. I can't remember the last time I was that frustrated with a game.

According to Wikipedia, Tartarus is "the deep abyss that is used as a dungeon of torment and suffering..." Yep. Sounds about right.

Good idea, bad implementation. Like super-bad.

Retrofuturism vibe is ok. Old-school terminals are ok. But any newbie linux user knows that terminals are much more usebale. They have a tab auto-fill command, they have search command...
In this game you are going to spend most of the time fighting stupid terminal interfaces.

I've been waiting to play this for about 8 monhts and was a bit disappointed if I'm honest.

I got this on release, but haven't found time to fit it into my streaming schedule, but finally got round to it this week. Deep down, most of the puzzles (of which there are 5) are simple, but the sheer lack of information / instruction the game gives you make it a long process. I understand that we're playing the role of someone who has no knowledge at all of machinery and mechanics, but I'm sure there is a better way to implement this than just giving vauge instructions to the player and then having no further help. It would have been nice just to be able to talk to Andrews on demand for subtle hints, but there really is nothing. I also found the pickup / interaction mechanism "clumsy" and more than one occassion found myself stuggling because I couldn't get the prompt to appear on the screen.

Then there's the end game. Why on earth was there a Final Boss Fight, who can one shot you from the tightest of angles, where there hasn't been a single enemy in the game up until that point. Yes it was pretty obvious that he was going to double cross me, but did I really need that unforgiving segment. I think not.

The look of the game is what really drew me in on release, and when I first saw it I had Alien Isolation vibes. There is some brushing up which is needed, for instance inbetween Mitch's Garage and Trauma, there's a door which goes straight through a solid ceiling and there are some weird reflections in the vents (fans) which don't change when you walk in front of them, to name a couple of things. But other than that, the look and atmosphere of the game are ok.

I just feel like the mechanics let this game down :(

I loved the premise of TARTARUS, there is an accident on the ship and you, the cook, are the only person who can bring systems back online to save the ship. You have to interact with the bridge, cargo bay and reactor systems which are all things you aren't trained to do so as a player you have to explore them and learn how they function. But TARTARUS isn't a very well built game. Many of the puzzles don't provide any feedback at all. So it might be a maths based puzzle and after entering in your calculations a message appears saying 'Calculation Failed' without any other feedback to indicate where you might have gone wrong or how far from the correct answer you are. Then there is the linear nature of the game, which is surprising because it is so immersion breaking. On the ship there are intercom panels in most rooms, in some rooms there are two, but if you need to use the intercom as your next objective, you need to find the one that the game is expecting you to use. After using it you can't use it again until the game is expecting you to use it as the next thing you need to do. This also applies to computer terminals and other objects. Ladders can't be used at all if it isn't one you will need to use to complete the game so there is no to very little exploration. There is a part of the game where you have to turn some valves and are only able to turn the one that you need to turn, to progress. So in concept TARTARUS is great, but the execution is at a low standard. The ending leaves much unresolved and doesn't answer the question of 'Is the ship saved?' or 'Did I survive?'. I can only recommend this game to game design students who want to see a game which is an excellent example of clear problems in design for an assignment.

Puzzles are hard, but not in a fun way. They're hard in the double checking literally everything for hours then realize your keyboard is unplugged sort of way.

Then at the end, it changes genre's into an impossible game of keep out of the line of sight of the "shotgun sniper" NPC.

Let me start of by saying that I love atmospheric, sci-fi, survival, and "hacking" games. So this is the exact game I love playing. Unfortunately, there are so many things about this game that just take me out of it.

        The good:

        -Graphics and atmosphere are great.
        -Pretty decent story.
-You can turn off motion blur and "input lag", which I guess are supposed to make it more atmospheric.

        The bad:
-Voice acting is actually cringe-inducing. It's also 1 dude voicing the only 2 characters in the game.

-Puzzles are too easy. Half the time of solving the puzzle was trying to figure out what it wants me to do, the other half is typing out the commands.

-Looks like the english translator gave up about half way through the game. ("Press 'e' to wear suite", Seriously?)

-Space walk part was boring, and all the models outside are very low res for some reason.

-Final puzzle was basically a 5-minute-long math problem, there was almost no thought involved.

-Final part of the game is what actually made me want to sit down and write this review, because it frustrated me so much. The whole game you're going along solving puzzles at your own pace. No death, no setbacks. All of a sudden it switches to an Alien style game, where you're trying to hide from the alien, except in this game the bad guy has a gun that 1-shots you from any range, sometimes around walls. This last part took me about and hour to do.

Overall, this game isn't terrible, but that last part, man.

I don't recommend this game. I expected more puzzles inside terminals. There is only a couple of them (6?) and all of them are pretty easy.

Finale of the game has nothing to do with previous gameplay (puzzles with terminals). I didn't buy it to end in finale playing some wicked hide and seek game.

        I am disappointed.

An excellent Puzzle Game ! All of comments below are wrote after 4h of gameplay.

I am not one of that "old" gamers but I love hard games. (lets say "fair" hard games) When I heard about TARTARUS I was feel like "ughh :/ another garbage walking simulator game." When I read further about the game, I learned its not one of them and then I get hyped bcs it looks amazing!

Recently, I finished almost half of the game. I want to say this game is awesome for an indie game.

        About Story
You are a cook in the mining spaceship. One day an accident happens and the ship getting itself locked and alarmed. You are as a cook trying to solve the problem and trying to go back homebecause you are the only one around to do that.

        PROS
        Brilliant puzzles.
        Elegant graphics.
        Intrusting story.
Good game design. (Non-helping gamestyle, hard puzzles ..etc)

        CONS
Sometimes you see ugly textures and objects.
The playgorund feels completely empty. There are lots of terminals, cabinets and drawers but they are not interactive.
There might be some lore notes around playground...

        Who should buy?

        • People intrusted with coding. (The game has hard coding puzzles)
        • Puzzle lovers.
        • Non casual gamers.

        Who should stay away?

        • Casual gamers.
        • Futuristic style haters. (see CoD Infinit WF)
        • [*]Nonpatience people.

        Thanks for reading.

SUMMARY: For a puzzle game, Tartarus does a few things right...but it's still not the sum of its parts. Relatively short (four genuine puzzle segments) and hamstrung by a weak plot and some bad gameplay mechanics, it's hard to recommend the game to anybody but a diehard puzzle gamer.

That being said, the developers are steadily rolling out small patches that are improving some of the issues described in this reivew. I'll try to reflect those changes in this review, so it's up to date.

        +++PROS+++

+ Awesome "retro-futuristic" aesthetic is a nice change of pace from other sci-fi games and lends a bit more personality to Tartarus

+ Responsive development team appears receptive to feedback and on top of bugfixes.

+ It feels really cool and immersive to sit at terminals and input commands in the process of solving puzzles. In fact, I wish more puzzle games would take a cue from Tartarus in this regard.

        http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1208392582

        ---CONS---

        - When you drill down into it, the game has only four puzzles, and a couple of other segments that might be loosely considered puzzles. This can be a very short game.

        - A pretty weak plot, with an ending segment that (without spoiling it) is just terrible and goes against the spirit and mechanics of the rest of the game.

        - Your character moves quite slow and while they can "jog" slightly faster for short distances, they'll tire quickly. I feel like a better "solution" would have been to give you a single movement speed that is faster than the default walk, but slower than a run--especially since your movement speed has no bearing on the game's mechanics until the final "puzzle". Exacerbating matters, the player's character will produce a RAPID breathing noise (almost like they're hyperventilating or shivering to death) while they jog NOTE: The developers recently released a patch that improved the audio for running.

        - Strangely inconsistent graphical quality: Sometimes Tartarus looks pretty great, but other times it's a surprisingly ugly game; many areas are unnecessarilly large and sparse, almost as if they're unfinished (SEE PHOTO BELOW). With such a small development team and budget, this doesn't come off as a huge surprise, but perhaps it would have been better for Tartarus to use more abstract aesthetics (i.e. "Tacoma" or "The Witness") to better conceal its rough visual edges.

        http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1209587657

        - Occasionally poor "mission" guidance: There's a difference between a game refusing to hold your hand, and opaque/unfriendly game design. Often times, Tartarus falls into the latter category. For instance, at one point your objective is to "Go to the Navcomm Room", but it's not entirely clear which room is the Navcomm room. As a crew member of the ship, this would be obvious to the player's character, but it's never made clear to the player. Eventually--perhaps by simply exploring every area you physically can--you'll find a room with a small morse code chart on a table and some equipment that, through some imagination and scrutiny, may suggest you've found the Navcomm room (although to be clear, many of the rooms are crammed full of sci-fi equipment)...but then what? The objective remains the same: "Go to the Navcomm Room." The fact that the objective didn't update made me question whether or not I'd actually found the correct room. Only after examining every nook and crany of the area several times did I discover that I needed to interact with a small panel in order to speak with another crew member, thereby advancing the plot.

NOTE: The developers recently released a patch to improve the issues described below; I haven't been able to play the game since the update, so I can't confirm how much easier it is to navigate this segment, but it's good to see that they're working on improving it:

Similarly, upon donning a spacesuit and exiting the vessel, I'm provided with the objective of finding an "exterior hatch". Okay...this ship is the size of an enormous aircraft carrier floating through an asteroid field...maybe the game/player/NPC could provide some better guidance than that, so I don't spend the next 10-15 minutes crawling through space looking for a hatch of some sort? For example, "the hatch you're looking for should be about halfway down on the port side" or "from where you are, you're going to have to head to the opposite end of the ship; look for a glowing red antenna." Again, this might be the sort of knowledge the player's character would possess, but no effort is made to convey that knowledge to the player.

        It's not a puzzle game! It's a walk-and-trigger game with 3 and half puzzle...

The trailer looked good and after seeing first 2 puzzles in letsplay, I bought this game expecting more interesting puzzles to solve and atmospheric levels to discover...
I don't find any hard puzzles in the game - even poor coded terminal is simple logic and\or brute force. Others look a bit realistic, dealing with machinery, electronics, hydraulics - but not realistic enough to be hard... Where all the manuals?

I've almost completed the game, but last part with actions exposed that the game is also not optimized at all. I've got integrated graphics comparable with minimum requirements, but at this point I've couldn't move at all and got triggered 'bad' event immediately...
I would return this game, but already played a bit more than 3 hours.

        pros:
        - good atmosphere, where accessible
        - very good voices

        cons:
        - simple and very few puzzles
        - a little rooms really accessible
        - almost no interactions with objects\rooms
        - storyline is linear and triggered in strange fixed places

I wouldn't recomment to buy this game. It's good as free demo, but not as a real full game...

This game is definitely for a niche crowd. However I do suggest the game for people that are into puzzles.

        [PROS]
        -Interesting and no handholding puzzles
        -games graphics are pretty decent
        -decent atmosphere and ambient sounds

        [CONS]
-Mouse movement is a bit odd
-Some glitches and misspellings (Easy fix with patches so no big deal)
-for the uninitiated the puzzles can be frustrating.
        -short gameplay

        [FINAL THOUGHTS]
While yes this game is short and is made for a niche crowd this game is a wonderful buy. I loved the terminal style puzzles and the atmosphere. It was a really good game to play in a day.

        Happy Gaming all

I loved the game. The game is mostly a puzzle solving game. If you don't like puzzles, then do not get this one. Also, the puzzles are based heavily around using computers. If you hate computers, then don't get this game. Side note, if you hate computers, why are you reading this?

Game does virtually no handholding and the puzzles can be extremely difficult from the start.

It's challenging and pretty good, I've solved only the bridge puzzle so far, but I'm really enjoying it! Deal with the MS DOS stuff reminds me the old days... was funny!
Despite of some people saying opposite, I liked the graphics and the voice acting!
        Good job Devs! :)

EDIT: after beating this I sort of changed my mind on how much I enjoyed Tartarus. The puzzles taper off significantly and it becomes more of a run around through mostly uninteresting big spaces and do this go back do that, none of which really feels like it has much purpose.
2nd last puzzle had me stumped over numbers in my fizzled brain and I had to take a break.

Ending mechanics are confusing and sloppy but the concept is cool, hope you enjoy hearing the same dialogue about 25 times

        Original review.

You are a cook and a miner, not many more skills than that, and neither of them are relatable to the tasks you are about to face. If you play the game from that perspective then all your anger and frustration will be worth it when you figure stuff out. It feels bada$$ typing in commands and using the terminals. Ive completed the first two major terminal puzzles with no help and LOVING tartarus so far. I keep expecting an alien to pop out and chase me. Write stuff down, take your time, enjoy the situation youre in, because THATS why its fun.

        PROS:
        -EXTREME difficulty
        -Excellent aura
-voice acting is nice (until you have to hear it repeated)
-movement is fluid and easy to get around
        -unnecessarily scary

        CONS:
-I didnt like the elevator keypad face being a texture instead of a rendered object
-During 2nd terminal puzzle I was hoping for a more environmental change and experience during completion instead of everything being within the terminal.
        -turning knobs for mid filler
        -ending
