This was fun until it wasn't. A tad bit repetitive. Good if you like tricky games.
This is a fairly basic platformer that's well worth the cost. The music is a bit repetitive, but I found myself watching movies while playing.
The final achievement is where I spent most of my time playing. Trying to find all the little hidden areas was both fun and frustrating (in a good way).
fun platforming recommended
If you are looking for a decent puzzle platformer, Cluckles Adventure won't disappoint. It has plenty of levels and good controls. Worked well with my gamepad.
Cluckles’ Adventure came to my attention when I used to watch the Co-Optional Podcast with TotalBiscuit, Jesse Cox, Dodger and their guests. This game appeared in the releases section where they did a quick run-down of the games that were scheduled for launch; Cluckles came up in one of those and I found the premise fascinating.
Cluckles’ Adventure is a delightful little game about a chicken with a sword, who has to travel around 108 levels in three different environments saving the captured chicks and killing the minions. Cluckles can jump, double jump, slide down walls and do a kind of dash attack, and that’s basically it. You can only take one hit before you die and have to start the level again, although you can pick up armour and a shield later on to allow you to take more hits. These are the tools you have to complete your main objective, which is to get through the levels. This allows you to proceed, but to truly beat a level you have to collect all the chicks as well.
As a game, Cluckles is pretty basic – but therein lies its charm. The level design is for the most part on point – entertaining enough paths to the level exit, often full of secret areas that reward exploration, and rarely more than a minute or two long so having to return to the start of the level when you die is not a major issue. Your move set might seem rather limited for a game released in 2017, but “how do I get past this bit?” becomes a very different question when the answer lies in one of the few options available to you right from the start. I’ve found that most games that don’t aim for realism in their art style age pretty well, and the graphics in Cluckles are pixel art, designed to resemble an old 8-bit game. This is deliberately designed to replicate an art style that didn’t age well, but Cluckles is a fine example of it’s use, and will certainly look no worse in five years! The sound has the old-style chip-tune bloops and whistles as well, and while the sound track isn’t particularly memorable, it does the job.
The game is a joy to play. The controls are tight and responsive, (I used the Steam controller for my play through because I didn’t want to brutalise my laptop keys with a platform game!) it’s genuinely challenging in places, and the levels are a lot of fun to beat. It’s simple enough that almost anybody can pick it up and have a go, and there are no adult-level themes that would restrict its audience. It’s probably the best game I own for being able to pick it up and have a bit of a play: There’s no contrived game system to learn, no levelling up or extra abilities, no incompetently-coded difficulty spikes, no overly elaborate plot, no belligerent multiplayer communities. It’s just you, a chicken and a sword, for however long you want to play it – and you’ll have a great time doing it.
Cluckles falters only slightly in the somewhat anticlimactic end game. Apart from the fact that the last few levels are slightly longer, there isn’t much differentiation between what you’re doing at the start of the game and what you’re doing at the end. This isn’t much of an issue; if anything it adds to the game’s pick-up-and-play mentality as you can easily come back to it after months and be none the worse for it. But there are no boss battles to speak of, no extra challenge apart from what the level presents, and there’s very little in-game reward for beating the game. None of this detracts from what is overall a very well-designed game – but people who are fans of the old-school platformers that it’s clearly trying to replicate may be expecting a little bit more.
Cluckles’ Adventure manages to present the core experience of video games without augmenting it. It throws out the bathwater, keeps the baby, and while not everybody will see it through to the end, it’s worth a look – you’ll enjoy whatever time you put in to it.
Final Score: 4/5. Great game.
very enjoyable and addictive . simple graphics but i would recommend . 100 levels for your money which has to be good . the levels start off fairly easy but gradually get harder . It gets very tough from around level 50 so expect an excellent challenge . well worth buying . A very enjoyable and good fun game .
Simple but fun, simply fun..
Very fun, yet difficult game!
Just some basics commands: jump, double jump, dash/attack, but the level design is so well-thought you can do a lot.
It's really hard to rescue all the chicks, but really sastisfying too.
For this price, it's a steal, you should get it immediatly if you like plateformers.
First of all, it's not a bad game. It's actually quite good, but there is one problem, which nearly ruined it for me - It is too long and way too repetitive. From the very first to the last level isn't much changing, except for some enemy types with different attacks.
Positive:
+ Nice tileset and overall design
+ 3 different locations
+ Good Soundtrack
+ Controls are perfect
+ Very good Controller support
Neutral:
+/- Only one forward thrust attack
+/- Some challenging levels
+/- 108 Levels, but they feel very repetitive
Negative:
- Sometimes unfair enemy placement
- Same cheap death traps in nearly every level
When I wake up in the morning, it is not to greet my family or perform at my job. It is not to secure personal betterment or gain. It is not something so tangible, so immediate. Cluckles' Adventure is a rare testament to the sheer possibility our human race commands. This game is a monolith.
I think this is an excellent game, great speedrun potential.
The PC version is SO much harder to beat as compare to the Android version. XD;; FML!! But if you like metrovania, chickens, swords and chicks you'll love this game. It's hilarious and a ton of fun. Cx
This game has a lot of potential but there's a couple of things that let it down. For example even when the enemy isn't in view or on the screen yet, you get shot at by the plants that spit things at you but how are you supposed to dodge them when you don't know that they are there? It leads to a very cheap kill system. It basically gives the AI an unfair advantage. In some parts you have to press the down arrow to get to certain places that aren't visable. How below some of these places are spikes but the problem with this is that the spikes aren't visable before hand, so you don't have a logical way of preparing to dodge the spikes. Instead, Cluckles just plumets towards the spikes and you have to redo the level, which isn't fair because it's not the players fault as they weren't actually physically able to see the spikes and plan a way of getting around them.
I do like the graphics and the combat with the sword and shield and would be interested to see these parts of the game develop. The amount of levels is just right and the platforming and parkour mechanisms such as clinging onto the walls is well thought out. The game lacks slightly when it comes to the tutorials. For example there are certain parts in the levels where you have to double jump and then use your sword to further extend the jump, otherwise you can't make the jump at all. When playing for the first time, it never once occurred to me that I could of used my sword to extend the jumps. With this in mind, I think it would be nice to see this included in the tutorial as it is clearly key to making certain jumps in the game. I'm sure this has been mentioned before also but the controller support in the menu isn't great but I'm sure the devs are already working on this, or at least I hope so.
Overall, this is a game with a lot of potential and visually looks very good with some great ideas and mechanics but does have room for a lot of improvement. I would definitely recommend if you like platformer games.
Meh.
The mechanics are solid, and the level design is varried and fun, but the lack of check-points within levels is a serious lack of respect for my time investment. If you play only to use up your time, and not to actually play, then I guess you might be into that kind of design.
Edit: this was originally a negative review, but I've been on the fence about the game after completing it and have to conclude that my criticisms were not bad enough to warrant it. I'll leave it as a positive review that highlights the games weak points.
I am enjoying playing through Cluckles' Adventure, the controls are tight and movement and attacking feels very fluid. However as I have gotten to the third set of levels, its flaws are standing out more and more.
-When Cluckles falls, she plummets like a rock. This has lead to many deaths when I need to jump over a hazard and can't react before she falls to her death.
-There are several types of enemies and hazards that throw projectiles. Often they will attack the split second that the screen scrolls onto them leading to a cheap and unavoidable death.
-In the first two worlds, secret walls are hinted at by placement of a butterfly hovering around in the area. But in the third world, there are many secrets that have no butterfly which means I have to hump every wall, floor and ceiling until I find the one that leads to a hidden room.
-and finally a minor issue, the level select screen is very slow to navigate with a controller, it's far quicker to use the mouse to get to the level I want to play.
It's a solid platformer game. It does not try to innovate or do anything special. It's a lot of double jumping, wall climbing and dashing (which is also your attack). All enemies die from one dash and most of your deaths will be from "spitting plants" that shoot a projectile in a horizontal line. They are not hard to deal with once you know where they are, but there will be several first deaths on a level to these spitting plants as they surprise you with their shot as soon as they enter your screen. And also on later levels there are Arrow shooting traps that are infused into the walls so they are hard to see, you are going to die to every one of them at least once. Very frustrating things to have in a game where you die from one hit. I almost want to change my review to negative just because of these things ...
There is also no story to this game (there was like 3-5 lines of text that made little sense) and I'm not sure why I'm collecting "chicks" but I am because if I wouldn't then I'd be missing half (or more) of the level. Controls are good. Graphics are fine. Music is ok (wish there would be more than one song though). There is a lot of things that could have been done to make a better playing experience (like a proper story, more than one music song, more than one upgrade etc.), but as said it's still a solid platformer just dont expect anything special.
Entertaining cute little game where you play as a chicken and save little chickies and kill evil slugs, skeletons, etc. Very simple and pleasing gameplay with cute graphics :D Also very fun to speedrun, especially with the leaderboards and in-game timer :)
Fun platformer, controlling the menus with a controller is a bit strange but not terrible, other than that no complaints.
Cute game, just did 10 levels in so far and I can say that it's fairly enjoyable for its price. Cluckles' Adventure is a platformer game that is a "Collect number of [X] and exit the level" type. If you played games like Life of Pixel, it's similar to that but with Chicks. At least in this one, you can actually defeat enemies but one hit from them and you start over the level again, although in the game you can gain shields and helmets to be better well-defended. Chicks can be hidden in levels so you have to find hidden walls and etc to collect them to get a "Perfect" on it. The Soundtrack sounds nice and retro-ish.
When I beat this game, I will give a better and more thorough review but I can say that you can enjoy this if you like "Collecting [X] to beat level" platformers and casual games to kill some time. Become a Momma Hen and save those chicks from those monsters with your Sword.
Cluckles' Adventure is certainly a great game for a great price.
It's an oldschool-style platformer you can have fun with for 20 minutes if you're short on time but will also draw in fans of the genre to the point where they have to wonder how the last few hours went by so quickly.
Despite it being very easy to get into, the game can be rather challenging at times.
Completionists will certainly have to spend a while to find every last chick.
The artwork and design is kept rather simple but is still very charming.
The soundtrack is reminiscent of old Gameboy titles and very addictive.
The Speedrun Mode also offers some great entertainment after you've beaten the levels regularly.
