Об игре
Grey Hack –
Grey Hack
Grey Hack.

Makes me feel like a cool hacker
Amazing idea, made for folks with deep interest in the subject. Its not a casual hacking game, if you have no real life experience with coding/scripting, you will most likely fail and quit, or start learning real life scripting to get the first mission done.
No particularly realistic representation of a *nix style terminal... everyone knows that new *nix user will get stuck in the vi or vim text editor and then never work out how to exit it for the next year or so. Its part of the fun. Shame that this Sim doesn't offer this realism...
Look mom, i'm hacking the government.
Overall I like this game. Personally, I think it is an interesting middle ground between actual hacking and video games. Enough in the middle I wouldn't even really call it a "game." It's a fun tool.
Pros: It abstracts key programming and hacking concepts without completely gamifying them. This means it doesn't require deep programming knowledge, but also isn't simplistic to the point of failing to qualify as "hacking." It WILL be a learning curve (especially if you have little to no computer knowledge), but that is the entire point of the game. It leaves enough breadcrumbs and seemingly hard walls to help make you go "how the **** do I do this?!" and then you learn how and grow your repertoire. That's the process of learning and I support it. I would genuinely consider using this game just to get someone comfortable with the terminal and thinking in the framework of a programmer/hacker/etc. It will NOT teach you how to actually hack. Those fine details are abstracted out, however they are still used enough to encourage using them at reasonable times.
The strange: for some reason it does not have full UNIX commands (notably find) nor terminal text editors like vim or nano or emacs. There's also weird OS conflation, like exe's on a linux based system. It also doesn't really lend itself to building bash scripts (for use in chaining workflows, bash aliases, etc). The desktop for the game also doesn't have nice quality of life features like edge snapping and adaptive resizing. The browser nor mail services have tab support, which bothers me (as a tab beaver). Overall, I think lots of small QOL things can be implemented. None are major, probably simple fixes.
Cons: It can be a bit too obtuse at times. There are some missions that can completely stump you with little to no guidance. If you want easy answers, this can be a real con. My biggest con is that the hardware system is just... not great. It's poorly explained, at this point seems more like an annoyance rather than an actual consideration, and has weird attributes (like what is "quality" in terms of gameplay?). File trees are also fairly uninteresting. They rarely get deeper than four directories, so it's genuinely faster to just use the file explorer. In real life, find and grep are instrumental for navigating real world systems. I think adding find/grep and more complex file trees can boost the intrigue of each mission. It also allows a learning curve. "oh, I cant find these files fast enough, I keep getting caught, how can I find these faster? oh these commands should help!" My final con is that the playerbase is small. This is a game that can THRIVE on larger playerbases, but right now it's basically 30 at any given time, a few hundred total. Nice thing is, the more people that play it, the more players there are.
Overall: It's a tough game that definitely won't appeal to all, but it's in general a fun time that can be quite useful as a glorified "real-enough-world" puzzle game.
Yes.
I don't know what's going on in this game. Just like another certain hacking game, it starts with a long, very promising tutorial.
At the end of the tutorial you're told about "exploits" but not why to use them or how to use them. When you get into your first real mission and have to use them, expect to get stuck. Someone on Grey Hack's discord told me what kind of exploit I'd need, and they couldn't tell me how I'd learn that from the game, they said they probably learned it from a guide.
Once I could successfully connect to a target system with that knowledge learned from a guide and not from the game, it led me to a .db database file that I'd need to somehow edit, but the game never told me how to do that, you can't just notepad it. Eventually the admins or whatever discovered my activities and gave me 3 warnings before ending my game.
I tried to cover my tracks the way the tutorial told me to by editing the log file, but the log file didn't allow me to make edits no matter what I did. I could view my connections to the target computer, but I couldn't delete them. The tutorial makes a very specific point to tell you not to delete the file, but without any other options, I tried to delete the file anyway, and the log file has read-only access preventing you from deleting it even if you wanted to, even if it meant this gives you away.
So I restarted my game, my notes about the mission were gone (oops, I didn't save the notepad file because I was warned earlier by the game that I'd ran out of hard drive space trying to download an exploit file during my very first mission), and it seemed to allow me to pick up where I left off. This time, I was now able to open the exe file on the target computer that lets me read and make changes to that .db file. Hooray!
Except wait a minute, now that I've made the change the mission asked me to make, the mission didn't complete. Missions are given to you in emails, but this email, unlike the tutorial mission email, didn't ask me to reply with a password or anything like that. Er, is it automatic? It can't be, because I completed the mission. Should I send a reply? Sure, I reply with "done", even though I know only the game is listening. I get a response email saying the mission isn't completed yet. What? Yes it is. I log back in with another unauthorised login and re-check, my change to the database is still there. It definitely saved. It definitely has the correct details. But mission not complete.
The game currently has no sound.
This is an early access game, the steam store page says it was released in 2017, and there is a roadmap posted in 2018. I think the version of the game I'm on is v0.8.5121a. v0.6 was the version released in 2017.
Really hard game to get started and get the hang of but once you learn how to use everything this game is awesome. Defs reccommend getting this.
Could use a better Tutorial and more hlp though.
A good game to break your head on a wall and doubt your own existence while you are hacked.
interesting idea. one very big glaring issue. if you plan on using this to learn kali or linux in general. dont. it is far from accurate. maybe a limitation on the dev. so take it with a grain of salt.
If you are playing this for fun, do it. very interesting game(even in single player)
for those who know even 1 percent of linux. be prepared for things like apt-get search instead of apt-cache search. if wrong syntax makes you mad(like it does me) then be prepared to get angry. oh also, there is not a single command line text editor while still having standard linux complications. like being unable to edit files with a gui text editor when you need root to do so. at least, just like on a real distro, it lets you open those files, but complains about permissions when you try to save...... additionally, all of your binaries and applications are .exe files. on linux...
fantastic idea. hope the syntax is eventually better and more actual linux commands/aliases work in the future. like ll (lowercase LL).
is very complete, the hacking is legit but old, a lot of outdated techniques so far, and I am a Unix/Linux person so is frustrating that commands like ls and Nmap etc are limited and do not fully emulate the real commands like ls you cant do ls -alh you have to do like it or not ls -la in that order when Unix you can do flags in any order ls -al for example should also work, with Nmap you can't scan a subnet like the real one instead you limited to one IP and one type of scan, etc.. but for a game and a MMORPG is very good I recommend maybe we can help developers so they make it a bit more modern in techniques and realistic in Unix commands... like in Unix we do not have .exe <- they are ELF files also missing a CLI editor like vi or at least nano .. please ADD vim ;)
I have no clue what I'm doing and my in-game PC is probably being hacked just by posting this review.
Also, they said it was safe, punjabi no virus
Fantastic Game. The community is really helpful and always helping newer players out! Worth every penny
so lost but sick
Alright I downloaded my tools, now to just... Oh cool someone found me and I'm dead.
Best hacking game I know of, it's what I hoped Bitburner was (although I still think it's awesome, just more of an idle game.)
Real scripting without the restrictions Bitburner has so you can spend more time making neat things.
I'm sneaky boye so haven't run into any of the community yet.
developer mama raised him well
Amazing game, realistic with a high learning curve. You can basically do anything you want- buy or write your own exploits and you can choose to be a white/grey/black had hacker.
Really fun and great community to help you start
The game is very skill based and is a fun way to dive into network hacking and scripting. It's simplified enough to make the process faster and more straight forward but left enough room to challenge players. 100% has a learning curve, at the start its challenging but once you start to figure things out the process becomes more fun!
Even though I've only played 10 hours of this game so far, I really enjoyed it, it's a pretty simplified version of penetration testing. For those who like to learn something related to cybersecurity, this game is very suitable. 10 stolen bank passwords out of 10.
Hi all love this game gray hack . 10/10 .
awesome game really realistic recommend it to anybody passionate about penetration testing or ethical hacking or hacking in general.
I could sit here and explore networks for days especially with the new update.
Great game. Best of all hacking games out there. But I have no idea about how the hell personal WiFi and server fees are working. And those fees not restored when I delete my PC.
best hacking game ever in the world
Using the Web thing to search for programs and shops and whatnot is horrible. They really need to add a way to get the NPC/Game created stuff to show in the search first instead of the annoying spam generated by players. This will only get worse over time.
The start of the game is awesome and pretty realistic, especially the hacking of the wifi networks, however after that this game does not require any programming whatsoever, it is merely a collect them all game with a strong hacking theme. Don't buy this game if you expect this game to teach you programming or require any programming at all.
This is fun. You can program to do sneaky things without going to prison! If you enjoy learning and solving problems, there is a very good possibility you will enjoy this game.
amazing game! looking forward for a release, but as of 0.8.5121 it is very much playable. you just need to code Your own tools, or get those from some other player
Best hacking game I've ever played. There are some toxic players that can sometimes ruins the experience. There are for sure some Elitest Jerks that keep information from some players and online toxicity between some groups of people. Can't wait to see how far this game goes. For sure worth your time.
It is like playing CTFs but in a better way! :D
Really fun dev-oriented game, steep learning curve if you start with zero knowledge of terminal commands, but worth it.
hmm. OOOHH! Nice computer you got here. Can I have it?
I love this game it uses real tools or programs and helps you to understand how to hack and how it is done. Many could learn from this and how to keep from being hacked or guard against social engineering. Fantastic game.
I do love the game but hate how there discord set up My account got hacked so i try making a new discord account to let the know what happen what i did to correct the issue and when i do the phone verification with my number which is the one i use for the account that got ban the owner set it up to auto ban that account as well which is shady so if i could request a refund i would so if the dev doing things this shady i would stay away cause he does not care about the users who play his game
I finished the tutorial and immediately had my system files wiped by some try hard asshole. 10/10.
I am hackerman.
Fantastic hacking sim game, love that its a MMO and the inbuilt scripting language makes it a lot of fun to build your own tools. I am looking forward to see what more is added in the future.
Best hacking game out there. It lacks documentation but the community is doing a great work about it!
Y el developer es español viva Españita!
fun hacking game!
It is a great game it takes some time to get used to but it is a game that you can sink many hours into
my only gripe is the shop and hardware parts you are limited to the draw of few parts every time you reset the game and the only way to check other parts is to close out and restart the game and hope you get what you need
This game is great. It teaches you a lot about computer systems and using terminal language. It is frustrating in the best way because it motivates you to keep searching for the answer and trying to solve the puzzle. I played it for 5 hours straight on day 1 of downloading it. Highly recommend if you are interested in hacking or just interested in learning more about computer systems.
10/10
Just getting started with the game is finicky and the documentation isn't great. The aireplay command docs for example shows square brackets for required flags when literally every other CLI outside of the game uses them for optional flags. The ls command also requires the -l flag to be before the -a flag when combining them. So the command `ls -al` isn't valid, but `ls -la` is. I like the concept and I can understand the game is in early access. I really want to give this game a chance but the gimped shell that they give you just kills the whole vibe.
Great game. I guess my playtime speaks for itself.

nothing works, you download apps to /bin, and sometimes they work sometimes they don't, and can't be found, even though you used it 20 seconds ago.
Pretty entertaining and challenging game 🦖🔥
Great game if you like coding and scripting. I will say if you know nothing about coding and scripts this game has a pretty steep learning curve but once you get past that its really fun.
