In Uplink, play as a freelance hacker taking on high-stakes contracts. Hack into secure systems, steal data, sabotage rivals, and manipulate evidence. Choose to support factions or go rogue, upgrading your tools and skills with each mission. As you navigate this world of cyber espionage, your choices have lasting consequences, influencing the direction of the story and your place within it.
As a freelance hacker, you'll infiltrate high-security systems, steal corporate data, sabotage rivals, and frame others for cybercrimes. Success hinges on mastering tools like password crackers and log modifiers while evading detection by bouncing connections and erasing tracks.
In Uplink, progression and upgrades drive your rise from rookie hacker to cyber-espionage expert. Earn credits by completing contracts, then invest in faster CPUs, advanced software, and powerful tools to take on tougher missions. As your skills grow, so do the stakes, creating a thrilling loop of challenge and reward that keeps the gameplay endlessly engaging.
Your choices shape the story and the world around you. You can align with rival corporations, support one side, or remain neutral, each path influencing your missions and alliances. Alternatively, you can focus entirely on freelance hacking, building your reputation and wealth. Your decisions lead to different outcomes, making every playthrough unique and ensuring a dynamic, replayable experience.

Still the best hollywood hacking simulator, meaning it feels so flashy and cool i feel im in an action movie as tom cruises chair guy, is it realistic? not really, but the terms and tools youll use are very much real things youll manage. plus having to delete CERTAIN logs to cover your tracks is the coolest thing ever
upgrade to Uplink OS for a sleek new look, its a mod from 8 years ago and brings this game into the 2010s
saved the internet, had to nuke my PC to escape feds for the crime of saving the internet.

nice and fun
First playthrough; caught by the feds for hacking GCD.
Second playthrough; caught by feds for destroying computer.
Third playthrough; Caught trying to steal money and wasn't able to clear statement logs fast enough.
Fourth playthrough; Stole money out of every bank netting me 8Mil c's and destroying computers left and right, hacked into Uplink itself, stole the agent list and imprisoned all my competition.
Genuinely a great game from 2006, I highly recommend UplinkOS mod. Take your time to read the help section in Uplink first before trying to break the game lol
A true classic of my childhood.
Hack the bank > Take all the money > Get traced > Lose your profile > Repeat
Absolute garbage: I couldn't even complete the tutorial. It says to run a file copier to download a file. I did that. The tutorial then says "press this button to speed it up." But there's no indication which button is "this button." And then about 0.1 seconds later, I am caught and disconnected, and can never log in again -- ever. And that after multiple other errors in the tutorial like telling you to click the "password box" when there isn't any password box (it's marked "code") and saying "bypass the screen" when you don't bypass, you click through.
Update: I used Internet help to get past all this and the game itself was just as bad -- missions that aren't solvable at the level they are for, and sudden random getting caught and booted from the game. All for the chance to grind away at the rather repetitive game play.
It really makes you feel like a hacker
Great game!
good
Its a more accessible "cinematic" hacker game, very good fun! Make sure to check out the UplinkOS modern UI mod for better experience.
This game is broken, just completely soft locked. Do not buy.
im tellin you this game is the best game ive played.
Uplink is the greatest hacker game ever made!
Been playing on and off for twenty years. Just got disavowed for the first time. 10/10, would trust Monitor Bypass over low-CPU Trace Tracker again
I played this game before it was my absolute favorite game when I was younger. I play this game for hours to end.
It feels like the hacking segment Deus Ex was missing.
20 years later still the best hacking game on steam, for better or for worse.
cool premise, ecstatic and perfectly designed gameplay, minimalist-yet-fitting graphics, amazing 90s trance-tracker soundtrack, great community and mods, a british developer and a unimaginably well-crafted, unique and enchanting atmosphere. these are only some of the things that make this game virtually flawless in my eyes
or, in other words (tl;dr or whatever), my fav game ever, if that means anything to you (and I hope it does!) :3
nice !!
Thoroughly recommend this game if you're looking for a fun retro hacking experience that isn't too hardcore. It is my favorite hacking game and love coming back to this. Highly recommend checking out the UplinkOS mod that others here have mentioned, it really brings the game into the modern era. 10/10 no notes.
The War Thunder Forums won't believe what I just got
This game is simply amazing and still very entertaining 18 years after it's original release. A must play with the new Uplink OS Mod. Greatly recommended. A+++
fun classic hacker game, captures the vibe, challenge, and pseudo mechanics. This is more hops and logs, security breaking with premade tools for remote access than programming.
it does have a small curve but you can make your own fun too, like paying off everyone's debt or sending rival hackers to jail. You can copy/sell databases, take down systems, give yourself every degree and certification.

More Than Just "Progress Bar: The Video Game"
Watching a clip of someone playing this game doesn't really do it justice, because on the surface it's a pretty dull game. No flash, just substance. Learn the tools of the trade, work your way up the ranks, acquire funds (legally or otherwise) to upgrade your equipment, it's all very satisfying. At a certain point the story events start to unfold, and you can choose to engage with it or not (though there is an invisible timer, and if you wait too long you will be locked out), at which point you're just playing for points.
Pro Tips: Don't accidentally leave your game timer on fast-forward, especially if you still need to clear the bounce logs from your latest hack. The FBI can show up faster than you think (in the game). :D
:)
its a classic. worth its weight in any library.
