This game so good for who that want to start their career in this hacking things. But atleast their must a little bit knowledge in IT. Especially in Networking knowledge because it's testing your mind to solving hacking stuff and these stuff relate a lot with networking and practical solutions. anyway it's a good game !!
This game is amongst the best I've had the honour of playing.
It's not a simple thing to code a good hacking themed game: Hacknet not only manages to do that, it also manages to have great writing, funny puns, an interesting storyline (the DLC does too!), and well thought out missions. It's genuinely just a great game (and it's not too difficult, even if you aren't well versed in IT).
If you've considered buying it, please do so. You won't regret it. Wonderful game, with wonderful music too.
This was a really fun game, definitely one of my favorites. Hacknet captures the feeling of being the hacker in a movie. I never thought typing in a command prompt could feel tense, but with the awesome music and graphics I got really immersed. If you like UNIX command prompts, or want a fun way to practice some of those commands, this is the game for you.
Makes you feel like a real movie quality hacker.
I can't in good conscience give this game a bad review. Was there times that I got pissed off by having to do 3 play throughs to get all the achievements? Of course. Were there times when I got bored of the repetitiveness? Absolutely.
The first hour started off pretty good. When things are good, it gives a really satisfying experience of feeling like you're this actual big brain hacker. I like how it gives options for you to skip around some missions if you don't want to do it all and just want the achievements and get it over with.
The story feels sparse most of the time but when it's getting down, it was actually pretty good. The final missions were well made and a lot of fun. Overall, I don't really think this game is subjectively for me, but as a whole product, it's a well-built and solid labor of love from the creator and I would recommend it.
great for linux nerds or wannabe linux nerds.
개강한 것 같은 해킹 게임
very good
superb story, i recommend playing with a mechanical keyboard for ambiance, youre going to type a lot in this game, now log in and hack the world
buggy but good
i really enjoy this experience its been lots of fun my pc had trouble running it at first but then i figured it out and all was good its a very fun experience i enjoy the hacking it becomes much easier if you can type without looking at your key board that is very helpful but all in all its one of the best games i have on my pc
It works just fine with a mouse and keyboard.
Very great game helps to pass the time
Fun text-based adventure game that emulates old-school hacking in a very movie-like way. There's a few adrenaline rushing moments and surprising events. It's not for everyone, but I enjoyed it greatly.
Challenging puzzles, fun mechanics, engaging stories, and a great soundtrack. If you're a patient gamer that enjoys being presented with detailed tasks in narrative form and taking the time to work through enigmatic webs of mystery this is the game for you. Sure, it has its high stress moments where you have to work quickly, but Hacknet does not overuse the mechanic and allows you to think your way though complicated scenarios. The game over mechanics are forgiving as most of the enjoyment comes from the well written storyline and satisfaction you feel when you finally solve the mystery. There is the added bonus of workshop content and being able to create your own campaigns as well.
Oops, apparently I never reviewed this masterpiece! This is an incredible hacking puzzle game that will delight geeks and fast typers. Once you get the hang of the system, you'll be flying through missions as the game supports both mouse and keyboard controls with autocomplete, and the option to either run executables by clicking or typing commands. There are also some cool twists and turns in the story. And it has mod support. The screenshots make it look really complicated, but it's really easy to learn.
"It'll be just another quick contract, I'm on a roll."
- No firewall or proxy?
- Only 3 ports?
- This should be easy.
[*] proceeds to have the most tense 2 minutes of my life
misleading concepts, awful tab completion, unfriendly feedback, inexplicit docs.
It also forces so-called hackers to use the mouse! But, the most insane is that wildcards like `rm log/*` is invalid!
This game really drives me, a Linux user, crazy.
BTW, it's also buggy. If you log into Entropy test server, run `Shell`, and overload it again, it will seem to irreversibly disappear.
Fun game
Great game, uses real terminal commands and files. Really feel like a hacker.
It is a fun little game. Makes you want to go to HTB or THM and learn more about the real world.
Story only goes as long as it needs to, and gets wrapped up really well. This is one of the only games I've ever bought the soundtrack of, and it was worth it. I'd recommend this if you think you might enjoy it, even a little.
Very interesting and different, it seems a little slow at first, but once I understood the commands better it was a lot of fun.
Also, there are a lot of references to movies and games, as well as secrets and optional paths. Really cool!
My only complaint is that the network screen at some point becomes very "polluted". I got some program that allowed some customization on that screen by doing some optional missions, but still it was messy.
Hacknet is a game that is at times unsettling, and at other times moving, but it's always fun. An excellent game among the hacker sims I've seen.
Fun little hacking game.
It has a few flaws: Firstly, notes taking up RAM, let alone a lot of RAM. I sort of get what the devs were going for here, but all it does is encourage the player to pull up a notepad on their second monitor, especially in the endgame when you need to juggle passwords and IP addresses for upwards of a dozen machines. Secondly, the node map. It's a cool concept but its insanely cluttered and unusable, to the point where the DLC gives you a way to sort it, so the devs know its a problem. but you just have to deal with it until you beat the dlc (intended to be played late in the main story)
Beyond those flaws though, it's a very good little hacking game. The terminal setup is cool, the story is surprisingly compelling, and it's got a neat series of puzzles that are very intuitive, even for me as someone without a background in cyber security. Recommended, just, take your own notes.
Great game, very good story and an *amazing* soundtrack.

it was very useful to me
rlly fun and immersive hacking sim. feel like aiden pearce as i type commands into the terminal,, just buy it
Pretty good. The story and music are great, and the exploration loop of finding IP addresses and looking through files is well put together. Most of the challenges are very easy though.
Some of the controls and mission triggers are really janky and broken. For example, there is a mission where you get counter-hacked, and there are effectively 3 paths you can choose between, but the triggers for the non-main path are notoriously broken (there are endless results of people not unlocking it after meeting all the conditions if you search online).
The terminal also does not handle directory paths all that robustly. For example, if you are in `/home` on a server and click `/log`, the game automatically issues the commands `cd ..` and `cd log`, but often these are done too quickly and the second command fails, so you don't always go to the directory you clicked on. Similarly, if you have an exe in /home and want to move it to /bin, you can't do `mv foo.exe /bin/`, you have to do `mv foo.exe ../bin/`.
But most of the time the clunky edges of the controls don't really get in the way, and overall it is a fun game.
I would definitely recommend Exapunks to anyone who is interested in this game or enjoyed it. Exapunks is another hacking themed game with puzzles that actually use a basic form of programming, so the puzzles are more interesting imo

amazing game, just when you think you have done everything something else pops up
This is one of those games that stands the test of time despite being nearly 10 years old.
I think when compared to games of around this era of the mid 2010s it's hard not to see it as a hidden gem that didn't really succumb to the wishes and whims of the public, which could be chalked up to Hacknet not being as popular as Goat simulator, meaning that the need for Matt to add redundant stuff that detracted from the original game and its initial vision is practically nonexistent anyway. But still, coming back to this after years and years of just forgetting that it exists is a real treat.
I know it's a bit unfair to compare Hacknet to effectively a Unity engine sh%tpost but either way I'm glad that Matt Trobiani didn't just milk this game for all it's worth like the devs of Goat Simulator did. It sucks to see when games end up like that. Looking at you KSP 2... (and also FNAF holy sh%t that series got messy... scott you should've just ended it at three.)
As for Hacknet though i say it's worth every minute even if you can just blast through it in about six hours. The music, the vibes, the visuals, and even the additional challenges you can pose to yourself after going through the base game and/or labyrinths. (for example, breaking into the email servers and seeing what you can find, it is possible!)
Either way, i do recommend Hacknet not just for newcomers to the game but also for people returning to it. Give it a few years and remember that it exists, a game fading into obscurity isn't really a bad thing, just means that you can just return to it after a while and enjoy it for the memories you've had with it on your first playthrough. (That is of course if the game is even available and is properly archived and isn't lost to time. *COUGH, COUGH* UBISOFT.)
Really cool and interesting take on just the concept of a game in general. Great soundtrack and overall a fun time.
I was surprised by how intense the game got on multiple occasions given it being in such a limited visual format. I guess that just goes to show the dev's talent with stressing you out.
The Labyrinths dlc is great, too. It's a whole extra storyline with a great sense of challenge and storytelling that I think improves on the base gameplay a lot.
The main storyline and the dlc took me only a little over 12 hours to beat, so it's not a huge dedication, but I will admit I needed some help from a walkthrough on a good few occasions. This game is teeming with secrets and easter eggs too, so I'd highly recommend replaying it to try and find those early on.
Loving this game, I already knew a bit of command line but it actually made me feel more comfortable with it on top of it being a fun experience.
Some really funny hidden gems in the game as well. Can't wait to watch Titanic 2. I cackled reading the script.
Its a fun and intuitive game where some basic Linux commands can be ran and understood
Very good game, does really make you feel like a HACKER
FYI man, alright. You could sit at home, and do like absolutely nothing, and your name goes through like 17 computers a day. 1984? Yeah right, man. That's a typo. Orwell is here now. He's livin' large. We have no names, man. No names. We are nameless!
Good God does this game ever take some very unexpected twists and turns.
I devoted the entire day to playing this to completion, and by God do I not regret it.
Incredible soundtrack, on-point storytelling and even after finishing Labyrinths as well I'm still wanting more.
By far the best hacking game I have seen here with some "meta" elements added to it. This game is just as fun even if you don't have a background in cyber security. 10/5 stars
great game, and one of a kind for sure. i do think this is a great game for people that like the hacking type games such as grey hat. this does teach you basic linix terminal commands which i think i a nice touch. overall great game.
As minimalistic as the UI for the game is, it sure as hell is immersive. It's got a simple, yet fantastic story, and the gameplay is complete seamless. Everytime I play this game I sink in 10 hours to finish the entire game in 1 sitting because I am so immersed.
first off, if you're intimidated by all the code-looking stuff, it's really not so bad. if you can work DOSbox, or have messed with some html (or even like bb code on a forum) then you can absolutely handle Hacknet. the help command is your friend!! do not be afraid to make liberal use of it!! and outside of one (technically two) missions, you can pretty much just use the UI for everything.
it's a fun little game that falls apart at the end, but the very last mission is alright. it's not very long, and that's definetely a good thing: there's not a lot of challenge besides knowing what commands to type and where to look. honestly, it's no different from any other investigation or mystery game. if you can solve a Murdle, you can beat this game.
also i know i just advocated for using the UI but man it is a bit of a mess. the map especially suffers: the nodes are a cute idea, but they're trapped in a tiny rectangle you can't scroll through or zoom in/out, so towards the end when you have just a bunch of junk nodes it makes finding the ones you need a nightmare.
also the passwords are sometimes really annoying. hint: it's a lowercase L, not a 1. pay attention to the fonts.
After this game I'm probably am a bit better in Linux command
Enjoyable session and keeps my attention towards the end
Initially I played about half an hour of this game, got bored and quit for like a year. I randomly decided to come back to it one day and got addicted. The story line is surprisingly engaging and well thought out, and even though I was pretty much just typing in the same commands over and over through most of the game, it was enough to keep me hooked to the end. It was also quite fun just digging through people's files and hacking into random things I probably didn't even need to hack into to progress. Really the only thing I disliked was the tiny map of nodes on the bottom of the screen. It gets very, VERY crowded by the end, making it really hard to find things you want to go back to. Other than that, great game if you're a massive nerd like me.
this is one of the best steam games i have ever played. you get to learn some basics about real hacking and play a puzzle the whole time, all while having the most kick-ass music and a captivating story line that always keeps you on edge thinking "what the hell happened to this bit guy?" as it is alleged that he is dead in the intro. all with an absolutely amazing climax where you hack into a company called Entech to delete anything related to the hacknet project where it is found out that bit had wanted to destroy hacknet but an employee of Entech shut his plans down by instead of arresting the guy, this maniac killed bit in order to keep the reputation of the company strong however bit had made many friends throughout his life and many of his friends started looking for him, all being led to dead ends. except for one, "V". V had seen your progress on climbing the hacker ranks and questioned if you could help him find bit. agreeing you go through an almost maximum security barrage where almost every pc either has an extremely fast tracer, or just inviolable sneaking through multiple cracks you find a jmail account that exposes the company's killing of bit. pissed off by this, V decides to get his revenge by ruining the hacknet project just like bit wanted using a sequencer executable. V throws you into the most hyped up, kick-ass section of the entire game where you are thrown into an offline storage server owned by entech and are tasked with quickly breaking into the server and deleting anything related to hacknet and then disconnect in the finale you are tasked with killing The Heart of Porthack itself once done the heart dies and all hacknet copies are destroyed. bit gives you one final message before breaking the fourth wall and telling "there's still one copy of hacknet that needs to be destroyed, and you're looking right at it." favorite steam game DO PLAY.
very cool, a bit hard to get into if youre not familiar with linux terminal and terminal stuff in generall like me but i thing its pretty nice to learn and there are many people that can help you when you get stuck ( shoutout to the steamposts from 2015 that helped me out a lot xD ) i think especially for the 5 bucks i payed for the full edition its tottaly worth it!
Hacknet is one of those games you play because you're interested in the overall theme. It's a game that is simple to normal users and at the same time interesting for the more tech-savvy, with easy controls and very straight-forward mechanics. DLC is a must-have if you are interested in mods and a must-buy if you liked the game.
It's a simplified terminal with a little extra stuff.
Seems like no decent story behind it.
I do not understand what's the point.
