Achievement Hunting Rating 5/5
A fun light reflecting puzzle game that can be done in about 3 hours. I really enjoyed the relaxing music as well. All the achievements will pop through one playthrough. I played the new version of the game and not the old one so I have no comment on the old version. There are many more games in this series from this developer that I will achievement hunt in the future and looking forward to it!
Straightforward puzzle game, in which your goal is to aim, mix and split laser beams in order to light up colored orbs. In the reworked version (for which this review is for) there are 38 levels with fixed laser cubes, increasing and balanced difficulty and new mechanics, but the basic gameplay is the same throughout the game.
Pretty much sums it up, as there is no real story apart from some text in the beginning of the game and right after you beat all the levels. Since all the puzzles are solved using basically the same mechanic, the game can become repetitive and tedious, but I thoroughly enjoyed it by playing in short-to-medium bursts.
The environments are cool looking, graphics are passable and colorful, the background music is perfectly relaxing and forgettable for this kind of game. It's an easy recommendation for hardcore puzzle fans (since there isn't much else apart from the puzzles themselves), especially since the game is often on a 90% sale.
PS: There are guide videos, but I would advise against using them. I am not much of a puzzle gamer, but I found myself solving the majority of the puzzles without even understanding how I did it, which proves that the puzzles are highly intuitive and solvable. Even if you feel like you are horribly stuck at some of them, I recommend quitting and coming back to the puzzle later, with a clear head (there are endless save slots and you can save at any time, which really helps). I did this with a handful of puzzles and while the first times I tried for a long time to no avail, I solved them within 2-3 minutes upon returning to them.
You think you think? THINK AGAIN.
The puzzles are tough, especially towards the end. Oddly, many puzzles give you more cubes than you need, which is confusing for no reason (eg. for the final puzzle my solution left three cubes unused). It feels like the developer designed the puzzles by just randomly placing a few cubes, lasers, and nodes down (making sure all the nodes were activated) without checking that their solution is unique, or even optimal. Contrast this with a game like Baba is You, where it's exceedingly uncommon to discover an alternate solution the developer wasn't intending.
Also, the puzzles start to get tedious after a while. All the game mechanics are introduced early on, so for the latter part of the game, it's just puzzle after puzzle with no change of pace. Again contrast with Baba is You, which consistently adds a new mechanic every few levels, which keeps things fresh and interesting.
Despite my complaints however, the game is fun overall, if not a bit short (I completed the game in three hours). All achievements are through progress, so it's an easy perfect game.
