Kartong - Death by Cardboard! combines the cuteness of scary toys with the charm of paper cuts - all wrapped up in challenging stealth/FPS gameplay (that’s a legit genre, right?).
VR or Non-VR, it's all up to you!
Both PC and VR modes will offer procedurally generated levels with maps, traps, weapons and toy enemies constantly changing. A unique seed system also allows you to replay your favorite maps and share them with friends!
New Progression and Skins!
No worries, no loot boxes here! However, to upgrade your crossbow you need Robo-Coins. These coins can be obtained by smacking some robot-butt! Each time you slay a robot they will drop coins that can be gathered to upgrade your crossbow throughout the game. Hasta la vista, baby!

So, you managed to find your way out of the city? Well, it ain't over yet pal. Kartong’s many difficulty levels will push you to the limit of your own madness. We would say “Prepare To Die”, but that’s a bit cliche now ain’t it?

Kartong features a a local high score system for each difficulty as well as unique seeds to control the maps. So now you can challenge your friends for the best scores, get the sweetest upgrades and show off your rarest loot!

With the new gameplay concept Kartong Co-Labs, we'll be able to put your favorite streamers and YouTubers into the deadly cardboard world of Kartong. The custom-made Co-Labs maps will feature different guest events, providing players with a growing library of challenge maps to play and explore. The various Co-Labs partners will be announced inside the game and on SVRVIVE Studios’ website as they go live.
A game jam gone horribly wrong!
After launching our previous title SVRVIVE: The Deus Helix, our dev team held a "lets-go-bonkers" game jam to blow off some steam. Obviously troubled by some very disturbing thoughts (disclaimer: we blame office air pollution), our team came up with Kartong. And once conceived, we had no choice but to bring a new unpronounceable game to the world.

This is more of a neutral review than a recommendation. Kartong has unique visual style and atmospheric levels but the gameplay is just passable rather than exciting.
Exploring randomly generated mazes is hands down the best part of the game, although it's a bit spoiled by a lot of invisible walls and almost grid-based movement. Environments filled with creepy toys are very atmospheric and look a bit like set pieces from Tim Burtons stop-motion movies.
Combat is fine, but it gets boring rather quickly. There are about 4 enemy types and they are not even that different from each other: all of them are melee and very easy to deal with. Excellent enemy sounds and animations make them appear much more threatening than they really are.
Absolutely beautiful!
This is such a fun game to play, I just love the cardboard and paper craft models.
A lot of thought went into the design of this game!
Rarely do I bother to post a negative review, but here goes. The game has wonderful art and atmosphere. But I've got three words for you that make it unplayable, "click to move". With the well known problems of the pad on the Vive controllers becoming un-clickable, and the growing issue of the stick on the Index controllers' inconsistent "clickability", it makes this otherwise potentially wonderful game useless. I have seen forums postings suggesting that it was to avoid motion sickness...how about you just provide options for the player and let them decide? I've seen other games that allowed you to turn click/touch to move on/off. And I don't know how they coded this game, but I have tried to use the Steam controller re-mapping to set "touch to move" to represent "click to move" and it has not worked (though it has in other games). Don't recommend. The 1.7 hours of my playtime is mostly me trying in frustration to get different control schemes to work.

Great game, somewhat spooky atmosphere. A little pricey, but I feel the game-play makes the price justified. I feel there's too steep of a difficulty curve quite early on however.

I revisited Kartong recently on desktop and changed my review to negative.
I finished the game in 1 hour and a half, that's not enough content for a 17$ game.
Also the ending is really disapointing.
Just to put you in perspective you are a test subject emprisonned in a labyrinth filled with deadly traps and ennemis by a stupid dipsh** that do that to broadcast youre adventure to be a fat karma wh**e on the internet.
The ending is basically you leaving the labyrinth, you see the limp d*ck on the tv explaining to you how you did such a great job and that he will reward you by killing you with a fly swatter and blah blah blah, then the tv close, he enter the room and the screen fade to black.
There is no boss fight or anything meaningful happening from escaping, you don't even see him kill you it just fade to black.
I don't normally do that but I will tell you how I would've done the ending.
Make a boss fight against the cun* where he loose an eye to youre weapons.
In that battle would you still end up dying because you are facing a giant (I mean how would you kill that you aren't Kratos...) but at least something important happend because the as*hole learn a lesson and the boss fight would at least be happening.
You can't just hype a moment like that all game and fu**ing serve us nothing in the end wtf dude.
Initially it seemed like it was impossibly difficult, but I tried the first level a few times and then I got the hang of it. Really cool game with fantastic art and animations. Can be really creepy at times! Works good on WMR although I would like to use the thumb sticks for movement. I bought it on sale, but the full price is pretty reasonable so I definitely recommend it!
While this game may be good, I couldn't play past the 1st level. Scares the CRAP out of me!

Wow, what a fun little game! A lot of fun in VR. The graphics are quirky and the robots remind me a bit of that whole Freddy thing, but it's a charming game! Once you get the hang of teleportation (if you choose to), and how weapons work, it's great. It's a tense little walk through a maze in a roguelike fashion, where you pick up needles and matches as ammo for your trusty rubberband crossbow. I played just a bit but it was exhilarating and I really got into it once I got it working right.
If you're into VR, this is an original game you should try.
Update: After playing a bit more and getting into the game I think this is a must for VR. It's just too much fun!!! It's scary but kinda survivalish, and definitely it gets your adrenaline pumping. As the ammo is scarce, every enemy you kill is a joyful victory. Seriously, play this game.
I'm usually not one for VR horror, but this game is great! The characters are scary and the environment always makes me feel like something is going to jump around the corner. The whole design of the game makes a great experience!
This game has its ups and downs. It is definitely a good concept for a game and the uniqueness of it makes it very interesting. but the mechanics of the game need a lot of work. it can be glitchy from time to time. the teleportation mechanic is very weird because it makes you choose which direction you want to face after teleporting and can be disorienting. its a kind of fun game but needs quite a bit of improvement
Pros:
REALLY cool setting. Looks great, very creative. I like that the game objects can be actually assembled in real life, and there are videos in between levels talking about how stuff is made. enemies and objects fit this perfectly as well.
Can be legitimately challenging if you're trying for stealth. Could do with better audio. You can tell direction and distance of a sound usually, but identifying if it's behind walls, or around a corner isn't obvious, and detection is pretty unforgiving of quick peeks
Weapons and item menus work well. They could do with some explanatory text though.

My biggest complaint is that if you leave the game and come back, it may delete some of your inventory, including the absolutely critical basic crossbow, which I'm not sure if you can ever pick up again as a drop. This means you can't really consider your progress to be saved. This is game killing for me.
No main menu? loads directly to wherever you left off. Along with the random seed and difficulty options but keeping your inventory, this is a bit disorienting.
Some settings missing, like the ability to turn off oculus-esque click to turn
Non-teleport movement is a bit frustrating; click to start moving, then it's controlled by touchpad?
Teleport movement can go through traps
No door on level spawn, really? So enemies can just come in and kill you repeatedly if you're afk? Worse, it's obvious that you COULD have doors because they exist in early levels.
Load times are pretty long
Enemy hit animations don't support multiple rapid shots, despite rapid fire weapons existing
A nice mix of genres that results in a tense and enjoyable experience. The art style is unique and compelling, and the short and randomly generated levels make you want to play "just one more level" (source: tired this morning).

Very nice game. I have just been playing it for an hour for the first time (I actually have the game since ..ever) and it was great fun. The design is fresh and very well done.
In 2002 or so, my very first map which I have created and published to the (Red Faction) community has been a rats-style-map. So I feel very dedicated to games like these, I just love the idea of being so small. I didn't expect the game to be this good and interesting. I feel the difficulty is just right and it is fun and worthwhile to make progress in the game.
The game will leave Early Access in April2018, so I really can't wait for it!
The game might not be so big, but it's just wonderful in VR if it meets your taste.

I gave this game originally a Not Recommended review, but the game was improved so far and so good that I'm updating my review to RECOMMEND IT.
I'm glad to see how the game changed drastically for good, because I just played it again since a long time and now the gameplay is fluid, challenging and fun!
The gameplay is to find the way out of a random generated level-maze that has many traps, enemies and also different ammo types that you could use to load in your crossbow or additional weapons that might be found too.
You also need to find a cog to activate the exit door that also needs to be found.
Game supports walking and teleport locomotion.
If you beat the maze, another one of incresing difficulty will be generated, this time it will have additional enemies, larger size and more weapons/traps.
The cardboard visuals on the entire world around you is surreal, all this filled with bizarre enemies can give some eerie chills. Great ambience.
The fluid pace and speed that the game has now is great, nothing compared to how slow it was initially, now I'm having a blast playing with walking fluid movement and some interesting chase situations on weird mazes.
I'm glad to enjoy it now, it plays great on VR with this bizarre Kartong ambience.
I will keep playing it and update further later :)

This is a very well made game, I love the concept. You are in a carboard maze/labrynth attempting to find your way out while avoiding boobie traps and THE PUMPKING KING. You can reset traps to get rid of the pumpkin king or shoot him with various weapons you aquire. The maps are procedurally generated and there is even an option in the settings to open a map "seed". You input numbers and it generates a map, so you can replicate the exact same map by inputting certain numbers. This is definitely cool if someone finds a unique map or a hard map you can give friends the seed # for the map. I like that they have both teleport and full locomotion options for this game for those prone to motion sickness, you won't have any issues.
The games not real scary but it gets intense and creepy when the pumpking king is chasing you. The various roaches zooming around startled me a few times lol.
Great game, DEFINITELY worth the price, especially at the launch sale pricepoint!
It's not very often we run into a new game type in VR. But this game is exactly that. It's very hard to describe. It's not a FPS shooter. It's not an maze game. It's not a puzzle/escape room game. It's all of those things mixed in together. What this game does mostly, is bring a spooky world to life in VR.
Death by Cardboard is not an understatement. You will be walking around looking at your surroundings closely, all the while suspecting something is just around the corner waiting to get you. There are different enemy types (not just the pumpkin guy) and all kinds of traps just waiting for one misstep from you.
You have tools at your disposal such as a "crossbow" that shoots pins, matches, cogs, keys, a nail gun, etc. And you have to figure out how to best use these tools as you do have limited resources. The death trap waiting for you can also be your best friend if you know how to position yourself correctly.
This game is just perfect for getting in the Halloween spirit. This game reminds you that despite all your rage, you're still just a rat in a cage. Happy hunting (and/or escaping imminent death)!

Updated with more gameplay: I've played through about 8 stages so far, and the content is pretty simple but well implemented. Scattered throughout the randomly generated maps are chests that hold "keys," ammo and weapons. You loot those while avoiding the pumpkin people and traps. The random gen works well enough and I've seen no bugs to speak of. It feels rogue-ish, but it is forgiving; a bit too forgiving.
The difficulty does increase leading to bigger maps, end gates that need more than one key and more enemies. There are also better weapons that are fun to use, but it became really easy after I got some gear. The two enemy types (so far) are pretty easy to deal with.
I didn't run into any bugs and the content flows well, though I did find myself setting off tripwires when I was pretty far away.
This game could be a fun rogue like in time, and it has a good foundation, but it is a little bland atm givin how easy it is. We'll see what happens after I get to the end
wooow. was looking forward to this. the art style, overall atmosphere and feeling of immersion is amazing. also the fact that levels are created random while turning out this well stiched together is awesome. love the fact that it is not insanely dark. Its just that right level in my humble opinion.
Since its early access I also wanted to point out a couple of things I noticed:
When enemys get pulled up into the air they clip into an invisible wall at some stage. Doesnt happen when the top of a box blows up into the air.
when clowns pop out of the box the head doesnt really wobble like you would expect is to. The Roaches often cip into each other.
Would love to see a moving siluette in some of the windows :).
Again absolutely love this game already.

It's pretty creepy in a cute way, the cardboard houses, the mousetraps, everything!
So a Pretty lovely game, the graphics are even better than other games because of the dark atmosphere.
That's because of the amoled display used in the HTC Vive, let u see less pixels.
The music represents the atmosphere so it's perfect.
Also a good thing that you can choose between free walking or teleporting, so players with motion sickness can play it aswell.
Another advice is to set it on teleport, it's a little bit cheating because you can teleport yourself above the traps, but there is definitely more fun with it.
It makes it more strategic than like walking random without a tactic through the map!
You have to plan your way (out? :D).
It's feels more realistic than other games, not that weird unrealistic feeling that other vr titles create.
And they release a new game for 5$!
The other vr titles are all overpriced/expensive for the small content, this is insane!
I can absolutely recommend it, especially for that price!
