It looked neat and the idea felt cool but sadly it quickly became very repetitive and tiresome. The game isn't very long but every session felt like a marathon. I've never felt this exhausted after mere 45min session of anything, surely tracking and controlling 2 things at once does a number on you.
It's a puzzle room over a puzzle room with pretty much no breather sections which could be rather easily fixed with some exposition segments as the game has 0 tell but also almost no show either in terms of its story or lore. We know we crashed on a planet, had two creatures merged together prolly against their will and then move along clearing some corruption. But why? To what end? Who are we? Are we stuck fused together forever? What's up with the ending saying it's a cycle? There are simply no answers to any of these while a few rooms with wall-paintings could hint this and that immediately adding a lot of depth to it.
It really looks like they tried to go for what Ori and the Blind Forest did but didn't quite grasp why it was so great. Surely it's pretty but that's all I can give it. It has one beaten to death mechanic that enforces a controller (keyboard wouldn't handle that many inputs at once anyway, wish the ember-split was a toggle and not hold...). It has escape sequences but often introduces weird camera angle for them making it only harder as you have to re-feel the jump distances and alike; more cinematic sure, but counterproductive. Terrain is rather same-y looking so finding secrets is more jumping to your death 100 times checking the walls or will camera suddenly pan down to reveal a new room.
Over all it's pretty, oddly shallow for the implemented artistry and with something unique that doesn't end up being that great in the long run making a not very compelling gameplay.

Pretty short but very fun! and sometimes frustrating. Much dexterity required. Easy to beat the whole game in less than 4 hours. 7.5/10
A bit rough at times, but you get use to it and plays quite nicely. Hitboxes are a bit larger then I think they should be as well. I found a couple bugs during the playthrough and have contacted the developers about it, but was able to beat the game without any real trouble. Played on Hard mode, even though I learned afterwards there's no achievement for beating it on this mode.

Gamepad, using Sticks and D-Pad. There are sections where you need to use both sticks, quite difficult at first to get the hang of actually but very fun when you get it.

As a fan of the Game Junk Podcast, I had to play the FULL game in support of Frank.
ITS SO CREATIVE! Just when I think the game-play will stay the same it pulls a 180, or switches up the controls I'm use to.
The art, music and cinematography just kept me immersed in each level and cinematic.
I really did not like platforming games, but after playing this incredible work of art...I love platforming games.
Embers of Mirrim showed me how a genre can be innovated just with a little creativity.
SKIP THE DEMO AND GET THE FULL GAME!
It looked great in the screenshots and all, the mechanic seemed interesting, but honestly, it's rather just tiresome and tedious. And from what I could gather, it only has 5 actual levels, which drag on for way too long. It's not a platformer. Not at all. The steam tag is highly misleading if you ask me.
Yes, there is running and jumping in the game, but those things barely qualify as that. The main "feature" of the game is to split your character in two and solve a series of puzzles. In itself that wouldn't be terrible, but if you're repeating basically the same puzzle over and over again, because the game just likes to bombard you with the same crap, then it just gets boring very quickly. Yes, there are new mechanics being introduct regularly, but they don't change the gameplay loop much imho, at least not so far.
That in itself might be something to overlook, but the controls of the two "embers" is also kinda wobbly, with a lot of drag. The main creature controls okay-ish. Since precise platforming is not really a requirement that's not too bad, still.
Graphics-wise the game is not impressive. The sound track is okay, but the sound effects are pretty bad. And the story? Yeah, no idea...it's just setting the stage.
A bit disappointing.
An absolutely gorgeous game, both visually and audibly. Controls are incredibly fluid and responsive, save for one or two rare points where they refused to cooperate. No Controller support. I won't buy a third seperate controller especially to play this game, come on!
You can't configure the controls. Everything is set. There's also no keyboard support and aparrently, my two Dual Axis controllers are too exotic for this game, which uses 6 buttons and two axis to play it. Windows recognizes both controllers, but the game doesn't react.
You can't skip the sequences.
I had to quit the game using the task manager because it's a masterpiece of UI and UX Design <3

Amazing split mechanic!
Challenging games are never enough, and finding a good one is always fun. Just bump in this gem during one of my queues and I couldn't be more happy. Graphics are good, atmosphere is pleasant, puzzle are fun and sometimes they'll make your brain freeze. There's a story, even wothout words, wich is great, some "collectibles" (actually, "findibles"), but stil it's very linear and short (indeed, my only complain the lenght, 3 hours to beat it, so you need a sale to buy this.
I hope this game gets a sequel and evolves to metroidvania, adding a battle system, more bosses and maybe even some rpg elements, just imagine something between "Ori" and "outlander", that would be a masterpiece!
Embers of Mirrim is a fun platforming game which offers a unique combination of dual-stick control of a split character along with classical platforming.
The world is beautiful. The platforming gameplay is largely straightforward, but the unique property of the main character is the ability -- and the requirement -- to split into two halves, allowing both halves to move about the 2d space independently.
Sort of like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time, separating your main character in two and having the two explore a 2d space independently means that you have to learn how to make sometimes opposing movements at the same time. The game starts out easy, with parallel movements, but ramps up the difficulty, mixing in different mechanics, necessary movements, and more, making a challenging puzzle to solve.
I originally played Mirrim at PAX East, and was excited to see the full game. The result did not disappoint.
If you like dragons, classic jump & run games and got enough patience (it´s a hard one) you´re here right.

Solid platformer - just when you start feeling like a mechanic or technique is getting stale, the game either introduces you to a new ability, or ramps up the difficulty. So far, I'm definitely enjoying it.
Also, though an indie game, the polish is remarkable - both the music and the visuals are very good.
I've been craving a linear platformer and this really scratched the itch. While I enjoy metroidvanias, I feel like I 've been inundated with them of late and I wanted something a little simpler and straightforward, like the NES platformers of yesteryear.
Embers of Mirrim is a very polished puzzle platformer with heavy emphasis on platforming and navigating between sections and light emphasis on puzzle elements. The splitting mechanic adds variety, and the game continues to introduce other small elements to keep the game fresh throughout.
The graphics are very gorgeous; the game's aesthetic is a little like Ori and the Blind Forest (but again, whereas that is a metroid clone, this is a linear platformer). Definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants a solid platforming experience with some unique elements.
Platforming is not usually my favorite form of gaming but I have to admit I got hooked playing this. I was a little confused plot-wise by the short prologue (allthough it looks gorgeous) but once the gameplay began I was in. The mechanics work well and the art direction and music are very good.
As an avid Film Junk fan, I had to pick the game up in support of Dirty Frank. Like Frank, I won't let my fandom impact my review. So let's dive in.
What I like
+ The splitting mechanic is interesting and different.
+ The few songs there are on the soundtrack are pretty good
+ Game runs like a dream for me (no problems so far)
+ Controls work fairly well
What I didn't like
- Game feels short (Having finished it in around 3 hours, I can safely say it is)
- Environments are pretty bland and there is no real reason for exploration
- Story is meh (characters don't emote really at all)
- Playing for a long period of time can make hands cramp (have to hold down triggers and use both joysticks a lot)
- $$$, game seems slightly overpriced, especially given alternative options like Hollow Knight, Owlboy, Ori, Rayman, etc.
- Camera: At times the camera moves to fit everything on screen which can make seeing your character tough.
- The last 3rd of the game is pretty badly designed.
Overall, pick up this game if you've already hit all the staples of platformers out there. There's enough here to have some fun with, but the game features a ton of drawbacks. Overall I wasn't blown away.
