I have spent much more time playing the non-Steam Windows version.
Bohemia Interactive should make this version (and the Windows version) free-to-play because it doesn't support them anymore.
It's wrong that Bohemia Interactive sells the Linux/Mac version separately. Other publishers provide free Linux versions of their games.
Both Codemasters and Bohemia Interactive should warn people more clearly (on their websites, in the game, and on the Steam Store page of the game) that versions of Operation Flashpoint: Resistance from 1.75 to 1.91 may delete your data. There are some people who still play old versions of games. You can't fix your problems by ignoring and hiding them. This "attitude" actually worsens your situation.

Even though this game is from 2001, it has many problems, errors, and limitations to be a "hardcore and realistic war simulator" or even playable. For example, you can still fall off the ladder of a radio tower because of a game defect. I have read that this game has problems with modern PCs. Very few people still play the multiplayer mode. And this game is not vegan friendly.
The developers should have used system requirements of premium PCs of the early 2000s instead of common PCs during the development of this game. But the developers were more interested in creating "Easter eggs" than fixing and improving their game.

Information about this game on the https://community.bistudio.com website is outdated.
It's better for people to make their own free games, software, websites, and guides. Terry A. Davis made his own operating system (TempleOS) alone. Donations work as proven by the success of women content creators.
Wow it works really well on my Linux Mint PC!
And its good old ArmA: Cold War Assault too - this is great!
More than 10 year as best simulator of battle. Thanks for dev and Steam team that vring series on Linux too!
A classic among war simulators and an exceptionally good one. Quite realistic also and an unrivaled replayability
I had a lot of fun with this game when I was growing up and it is nothing short of a cult classic. It's really cool to see it available for Linux, but it being a separate store item is quite annoying.
If you enjoy arma then youll likely enjoy this too. it runs really well (its ancient so thats no surprise) but the only real downside i see is the controls are a little wonky but you can rebind any key.
The old and famous Operation: Flashpoint.
I worked on its direct sequel Arma 2 (as Arma was the improved Flashpoint engine by the same team - Codemasters producer stole the Flaspoint name from the developer team Bohemia Interactive (Codemasters themselves then created Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - game based on racing engine, completely unrelated to the original Operation: Flashpoint)).
If you are interested how games looked 25 years ago. If you want to see where the open worlds originated. If you want to see the experience that was designed by millitary enthusiasts, If you have Linux. Go for it.
Though the game is very good (if dated), there's no real reason to buy this dedicated port when you can run it through steamplay/proton. You'll have to manually input your CD key to the registry for the game with Proton(install it in steam+wine first if you can't figure out how to convert it to hex), but it should generally run as well if not better.
The few big mods I've tried for the game will crash more often in the dedicated port than they do running the standard version with proton.
I bought this game several months ago. Now it's on sale and I wanted to say that I really appreciate the support and I don't mind separated versions for Mac/Linux at all.
As a Linux-exclusive gamer I would even prefer to have an option to buy separated Mac/Linux versions of all games.
Good game, good port.
Pro's:
Performance just like on Windows, maybe better (don't know about Mac);
Works fine with opensource drivers, even with nouveau (on Linux);
This is not Wine port;
Many aspect ratio settings, inc. triple head 12:3, 16:3, 24:5.
Con's:
Not working online multiplayer, just LAN;
Not included "Red Hammer" campaign (why?).
Thanks to Bohemia for supporting Linux! Wish we all see more of your great games on Linux in the future!
What a classic!
It comes with the issues of the original:
- missions/scripts are not super-solid ... sometimes helicopters crash, tanks get stuck, etc.pp.
- the UI is far from polished
- creating/editing missions is time-consuming
- it looks outdated
- etc.pp.
BUT, it also comes with all the good stuff:
- two campaigns with a lot of different missions and funny (as in retro-fun ;) ) cut-scenes
- no mission will ever play exactly the same
- big islands with forests, hills and towns (one can navigate inside of buildings)
- one can drive cars, trucks, armoured vehicles (tanks!!) ^_^
- one can fly helicopters (Hind, Apache, Mi-17, Cobra, ...) and airplanes (not too much fun IMHO)
[*] a complex editor to design your own (scriptable) missions
PS: I am happy to pay a (small) price for the Linux-port - the Summer-Sale was a no-brainer. The performance is good.... and what other games allows you to fly the Hind or Apache??? :)
PPS: Looking for a retro single-player FPS-experience I have not tested Multiplayer yet.
Game is awesome. But they shouldn't make us pay for one game twice. I bought Windows version so I should have automatically Linux version. It's not okay.
First off: This is the good old "Operation Flashpoint"
Great game and great port.
This game brings back so many great memories of the time spend in this game.
At first I was pretty blown away by the bad graphics but as soons as you hit up the campaign and sound, the fun starts again.
Definetely worth the 4€.
Do NOT buy this "port" if you already have the original game. It could have been worth it is they had actuall ported the damn game but instead they decided to package wine and the original windows exe. Not worth your money, just run it through wine instead.
It is very unfortunate that it has been decided to not release this game as a Steam Play title. Also, the internet multiplayer browser appears to be missing.
Other than that, the game itself is very entertaining!
I wish this game had saner mouse handling, but it can be tweaked to acceptable levels (thanks to those who commented on my first review).
Very happy to support Linux gaming. Keep 'em coming.
I got this game for 3 reasons:
- 1 To show devs and publishers that porting games to linux is profitable.
- 2 To show devs and publishers that there is a market for old, cult or classic games in linux.
[*] 3 To send Bohemia a message: Fully support ARMA III for linux. I really want to get that, but I won't spend my money in a experimental port that might be droped. 2022 EDIT: Well, this didn't turn out so good, I did get ARMA 3 and it runs great on Linux via Proton. So thanks Wine, Proton and CrossOver communities, thanks for nothing Bohemia.
Other than that, what can I say. This is a cult, genre defining game. I played Operation Flashpoint back in the day and loved it, ARMA is about the same. Gameplay wise is worth playing, but the game has aged and nowdays I've seen better textures in voxel games. Deffinitely worth a buy imo, if you like war simulators or retro games.
One of the first games i had for PC to which i spend countless hours creating a mission whereby people get into a helicopter, travel for 10 minutes, then get shot as soon as they got out. I loved it, my friends not so much :)
I remember playing this game with my old and beloved voodoo 2 (this game used to support glide!). About the game, well is just awesome in all levels:
* Great Story (at least the vanilla version)
* Complex combat simulation (but no so complex to be considered as a simulator)
* Lots of vehicles (Russians/USSR helicopters!)
* Excellent level editor
It works great in Linux with mesa driver 12.0.6 (default version in ubuntu 16.04). Ok, maybe there are some minor bugs, but they are the same that Windows has (be careful with the shadows, the object shadows activation freeze the game at startup. I remember having the same issue in Windows 7)
THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME now ported on Linux & Mac.
The port seems to be well done, it even seems to improve some minor stuff from the windows version, like the scenes with people in some above ground house floors in CWC campaign look again as they should, and also this seems to be first official version, where aspect ratio settings finaly works, only current problem with it are weapon optics, which leave see-thru spaces on sides of widescreen.
Another current minor problem is time acceleration, which on first look doesnt seem to be working, but when playing I realized the key for accelating time works, I just need to press it together with shift (not sure if badly mapped key or some problem with my system keyboard layout) Also after few minutes playing, the game seems to lose ability to take steam screenshots.
And two questions for the developers: Why not include Czech language (with czech audio)? And also why this game doesnt have workshop already?
Yesss! Had this already in my library and remember trying to run it on Wine, few years ago, with control and texture problems.
This port looks good, tested few mins of the campaign, 120Hz @1080p CPU at 1/4 usage and GPU at 46 C.
Enjoyed the intro with a big smile for the nth time :)
Thank you Valve, thank you VP and thank you Bohemia.
