Buy on sale, level agility, most people should not bye this though. I am glad I did because the combat is for the most part really fair, simple but fair. There are a bunch of weapons, scaling is sh*t though. I don't know.
This game had potential but was apparently abbandoned by the developer. I do not recommend it.
Screen flickers green and is unplayable. No reply for the dev in over 2 weeks about a fix. Problem persisted for over a year based on posts on security hub. Refunded. Pity as it looks right up my alley.
Is there an easy mode the makes the "controls" more bearable and gives you more than 1 attack?
It took quite a while to get into the game, but i enjoyed every second! I bought it because i wanted to try out some "souls-like" games, and i had so much fun to learn enemy movement and attackpatterns, that i can just really recommend this! Great game, some bugs...but still very enjoyable!
Game hasn't been updated forever. Guess this is another early access failure which is really too bad as there are some really good games out there that deserve the attention.
Right now this game isn't one of them.
No key bindings customization which is a huge thumbs down from me. The game takes inspiration on the souls games but plays like LofT, slow and clunky. The gameplay has no depth. Monsters deal way too much damage and add that to the fact that you only have 3 heals plus consumables and the dodge is a bit unresponsive, you can't play a bit more aggressive, you have to play in a most boring way.
I'm a souls player, one R1 in dark souls is better than this whole R1 spam of a game.
Pros:
- Challenging Gameplay
- Character & Level Designs
- Sound/Music
- Lore (Minimal, but pretty good)
- Boss Battles (But Niak can f**k right off with his stupid spamming tiny flame balls lol)
Cons:
- Story (that ending tiss tiss)
- UI (Its Functional but lacking)
Mixed:
- Hit Boxes (For the most part the hit boxes work perfectly, but it is defiantly noticeable when they don’t)
- Shield and Running Lag (Maybe by design but the half second I have to wait to put my shield up or run is quite a long time in the midst of combat)
In the end I would give this game an 8/10. It’s a great game if you’re looking for a challenging souls inspired title.
Updated - This game was abandoned and never really finished. It has major balancing issues. It is okay, but needlessly frustrating. It is a shame the developer gave up.
As of now, I am five hours in and trying to beat the third of 11 bosses. I am a Dark Souls junkie so I wanted to try this game out. It's a solid isometric dark souls. Skills and equipment are simplified compared to dark souls. Killing enemies gives you XP that you spend at shrines to level up. When leveling, you can increase either strength, agility, health or stamina. When you die, you lose half of any unsaved XP and it is gone forever. By resting at a shrine you can save your XP so it isn't lost when you die.
You can equip a weapon, armor and shield. You can also use a two-handed with no shield. There are no ranged weapons or magic. Combat is all about stamina management, dodging and counterattacking. So far, all the enemies I have encountered are humanoid. Some enemies have ranged and magic attacks, so maybe I will get some later on.
Pros:
Environments are gorgeous and vivid. I just went through a really cool "Tomb of Giants" inspired level.
The music is really good.
Environmental traps can be used to kill enemies.
Enemy archers can kill other enemies with friendly fire.
Items are purchased with gold, not XP.
Combat is challenging.
You can save your XP by resting so you won't lose it.
Isometric camera doesn't give me headaches or get hung up in tight spaces and cause me to die.
Game is way underpriced. Only $9 seems crazy. This is a very quality game.
Cons:
Healing items are too scarce in my opinion. You only start with 3 eternal stones (estrus flasks). Enemies hit hard and the stones don't heal enough. As of the third boss, I still only have 3. You can buy food to heal you, but the one food merchant doesn't appear to restock, so I bought all 6 and that's it. Enemies very rarely also drop food.
Lose half of your unsaved XP when you die; you can't recover it all by making it back to where you died.
Bosses seem overpowered. The 3 bosses and 1 mini boss all have a huge reach advantage and near endless amounts of stamina. They can be unrelenting. They hit crazy hard and you only have the 3 healing items. You can save up food to use for bosses, but you won't have enough. I am a major dark souls veteran. I've never done the soul-level 1 run, but have beaten NG+ while limiting myself to level 50. I don't feel like anyone will be able to do that here. I could be wrong, but it feels like you have to level up to overcome some of these bosses.
I will keep at it and see if I can "git gud".
If you like the souls games, especially DS1 & DS2, you should totally give this a try.
Edit: I am now 13 hours in. Not a single bug or crash. Optimization seems good too. I started a new build based on agility and stamina. Early going seems easier, but it may be that I am just getting better.
The major problem with the game is balance. There are very few agility based weapons, the vast majority scale with strength. All weapons are found in chests, but they don't get better as the game goes on. I still do the most damage with "fencer", which I got very early on. I've found over a dozen weapons since, but they are inferior. Also, the damage to weight ratio is very inconsistent. Some weapons will have a minimal damage increase but weigh 4 or 5 times as much. Equipment load alters speed and speed is everything.
Every weapon sold by vendors is also found in chests for free, so there is no point in having vendors sell weapons. Alternatively, there is hardly any food available to purchase. I have nearly $6,000 gold and nothing to spend it on. You can offer $100 at an alter for buffs, but I need more healing items.
The permanent loss of half your XP every death is becoming a major pain. As I already stated, you have to level up to survive. That means some grinding. The problem is, nearly any enemy can kill you in 3 hits or so. You take a few hits and then you've used up your 3 allotted healing items and then you catch an arrow and half your XP is gone. You need more XP for each level, but the amount of XP for killing later enemies doesn't increase much or at all for some of them that appear later game. It takes longer and longer to level up, it gets repetitive. I'm in a swamp area right now and all the enemy hit points seems to have dramatically jumped. My character isn't keeping up, (needs balance).
I still think bosses and some enemies need balanced too.
Some type of ranged option would also be nice. If we could carry 5 throwing knives or something that would give us more tactical options.
Overall, the game is good. Some people will get very frustrated though. It's very well made, but a few quality of life improvements could make a huge difference. I hope the developer reads this and looks into changing up some of the weapon scaling and damage, the number of eternal stones, the amount of XP dropped and the stamina/health of some of the bosses and maybe give us the ability to have a few projectiles of our own. I'm not saying we need a dedicated ranged class. You could have a pile of 5 rocks that spawn next to each shrine that we can pick up.
If you want isometric Souls-like this is a decent interpretation of that. Its more simplistic than Dark Souls but carries over the core aspects like being not spamming attacks or roll, or that that feeling of perfectly rolling threw an enemies attack due to I-Frames. The RPG aspects are also more simplistic and the story is very minimal.
For how cheap it is I'd recommend it if you're itching for a quick fix of some Souls.
This game is a distilled version of my personal favorite parts of the Dark Souls series. Here is a series of questions you can ask yourself before buying this game:
When playing Dark Souls, do you tend to only use R1 attacks?
Do you think it's important to be punished for being greedy with your attacks and punished for spamming R1?
Do you love i-frames and that satisfying feeling of rolling into an enemy attack to get perfect placement to land a hit before dodging out of the way again?
Do you avoid magic and only use melee weapons because you like your combat close and personal?
Is the best part of Dark Souls learning enemy patterns and reacting to them?
Is the only item you use the Estus Flask when playing Dark Souls? Do other items detract from what you consider the core gameplay of Dark Souls?
If you answered yes to these, Davyria is likely going to be a winner for you. This is a very pure little game and I hope to see more from the developer in this style.
Don't buy this game yet, Unless you intend to help fund this project. It's pretty bad. The game took almost all of it's inspiration for Dark souls, but failed to get any level of complexity into the game. It feels like Lords of the Fallen, except top down, even more sluggish controls, and no variation on combat or tactics. Just step back, wait for the enemy to attack thin air, step in and score a hit. Rinse and repeat.
However, as I said at the beginning, don't buy YET. If the developer continues working on this game, then I will probably return to it. More combat depth, faster response times, wider variation of options in character development (and the menus...very restricted at the momemnt.) So ya, It needs a lot of work.
All that being said, the last update was 03/26/17, so the developer is still active! Which is good to know. Please keep working on the game. I will keep an eye out for the updates.
(Holy shit, as of 7-27-17 I have the only negative review? =/ Hmm...maybe that says something about me? Or the game? Dunno. I stand by my review, but clearly, I'm in a minority, so keep that in mind.)
Anyone who is into the DS-series or related games should really get this! It's super fun! :)
Of course, it is not DS or something but you get a well-programmed and awesome looking game for a small price! Definitely can recommend! :)
pretty good, though its a strictly "very hard" game. dark souls-style difficulty but cranked way the fuck up.
and fuck the last boss
Have not played much yet but it does seem to offer and challenging and fun experience for those who like slower paced, tactile swordfighting experiences. For Faster I'd recommend Salt and Sanctuary, DragonPath or Rogues or Heroes but from what I played I'd recommend.
Good, solid game. I really enjoyed it.
About 10 hours long to fully complete it.
I think that it better fits for souls-like fans. Any souls fan will feel right at home.
It's a top down souls-like game with somewhat simple structure, art direction, level design, etc and low production values, with a very well done combat system and nice bosses that are progressively more and more challenging but always fair.
I played the game on a laptop.
My specs
-intel i3 2330M
-intel HD Graphics 3000
-3 GB DDR3 memory
The game is ok on low settings and completely playable. I had a few crashes because of overheating but nothing to worry about. Also, sometimes the game messed up the colors on my screen. I don't really know if this problem was because of my low specs or the game itself. Nevermind, a restart fixes this issue.
pros
-great combat, fair hit boxes
-challenging and fair
-good pacing, fights and bosses are progressively more challenging
-great bosses
-solid, tight, responsive controls (I played it with a PS4 controller. works great)
cons
-nothing to really say here.
At the moment there is no option to run. It's a small indie game with low production values. The game fits better for a souls-like audience. Music is not very good. Graphics do their job just right. Not exceptional level design or art direction (but enjoyable dark comic art). Variety of weapons with different speed and reach but the same animations. There is no replay value. Not very polished, etc. But all these things are nor pros nor cons.
Overall the game was very enjoyable for me and I recommend it. Especially to souls fans.
Fully deserves its price.
Overall:
The overall game is really fun. There are some hard passages, at least for me as a Newbie in this sort of games. It's roughly like Dark Souls but of course with a limited extent considering the price.
Graphics:
I really like the cell-shading style of the game. There are far too few games which are using this. It reminds me of Zelda Wind Waker which I loved for the style.
Gameplay:
Using the controller was no problem, so the movement etc. was really smooth. However you need an input maper if you want to use the controller. I enjoyed playing around with different weapon styles. Maybe there will be more weapons in future updates.
The game doesnt have enough graphic options
You cant even choose what resolution you want to play on
I always play on 1280x720 but the only graphic options you have is high, medium, low and very low.
You dont get to choose what graphic options you want on or off or even reduce or increase.
I'm finding Davyria better than I anticipated, going into the game loving Miyazaki's Souls formula.
Pros -
Challenging
Fair hit boxes
Great boss battles
Variety of weapon types
Rewarding
Cons -
Sound design & UI is lacking
I'd recommend it to anyone who loves Souls or challenging games.
I very much like that the developer is working to improve and add more into the game!
