With Virtual Sports, our team at Free Range Games worked hard to achieve two main goals: provide an amazingly fun and familiar experience for those who already know how to play, while also providing beginners with an excellent way to learn that’s even easier than real life! The groundbreaking physics of Virtual Sports transfers the energy from the player to the angular momentum and force on the ball with a precision to match the Vive's sub-millimeter controller input. Combined with the Vive's haptics and great audio, the illusion is stunning. For new players, we can adjust the ball response such that it still feels real, and the laws of physics are still observed, but the ball stays in play much more often. Even master players find Fun Mode enjoyable, with its longer, almost meditative rallies.
Free Range Games has a mission to bring great gameplay to multiplayer VR. Using networking techniques perfected for competitive action video games, the latency when playing Virtual Sports online is hidden from the player in such a way that both players will see the ball hit at the same time even if they are playing from far apart.
If you have have been waiting for a sports game in VR that is big on fun and truly realistic, then Virtual Sports is just what you’ve been waiting for!

i realey liked the game it was my favrate but now i am having truble playing because the paddle is not oreanted corectly for game play
i hihly recomend tis game if it works, but so far after i did a update i cant get the game to work corectly
This game does not work with the wireless adaptor and for almost three months, both the developer and Vive Studios have ignored my requests for a response on whether they intend to fix it.
It works fine when wired but wireless has problems with both table tennis and tennis so it is unplayable.
However, from what little I played when testing wired, First Person Tennis is a much better tennis game and Eleven is a better table tennis game.
Amazing physics and great fun! Wish there were more customizations as far as practice opponents, returning serves, and tables locations.
The table tenis part is quite good and runs nicely i've not yet tried it without the "FUN" mode but i'm bad at table tenis anyway so if u want this for table tenis its a great game
The normal tenis side though runs like garbage barely going over 45fps and the physics simulation is tied to the fps so the ball constantly speeds up and slows down when the game keeps boucing between 45 and 90 fps
i got a gtx 1080 and an ryzen 5 cpu so it shouldnt run this bad when the game barely scraps 30% load on either part
Props to the makers. I picked it up on sale today. Had it in my wish list for a while as I've heard good things but couldn't really see how tennis or ping pong would be all that great.
I was wrong, the physics are really quite incredible. I can tell there is obviously some assist in action to make things a little less realistic and frustraiting and 10X more fun. Great job. I can't decide wich I like better. Probably ping pong since I grew up playing it and it hits close to home.
I am only reviewing the tennis part of this game as I don’t play ping pong.
If you’d asked me what game I would play the most in VR a year ago tennis would not have even entered my head, but I play this more than any other game on the PC now, let alone VR. I nearly didn’t try ‘Virtual Sports’ as I’d bought ‘First Person Tennis’ prior to this and the physics were so awful I didn’t think VR would ever get it right, but as steam takes games back if you don’t like them (played under two hours and had less than two weeks) it seemed stupid not to try it. The AI are playable but I play tennis and they don’t provide much of a challenge but the multiplayer tennis is what this game does incredibly well.
Positive
Same fun as going to the courts but without the Cue
So much more realistic than playing the AI
Keep fit - I play this with my European friends every day now as part of my fitness routine. Not as energetic as running but I do this three times longer because it’s fun.
Physics - Incredibly close to the real thing
Negative
Can only play other people in Europe, tried further but network can’t cope
Only one of the courts can be used for multiply.
This is a video link of me playing one of my European friends and gives you an example of some serves, movement and speed in game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT-8hLp1iI8 but this is not the same as being there in VR, so If you’d like some people to try the multiplayer with (that are in Europe) I have a Discord channel called ‘Buzz Buddys’ https://discord.gg/fSFUYcp just leave your request for a partner in the multiplayer-requests channel, or just friend me on steam.
Decided to refund because online play doesn't work at all and kept giving me "Unable to connect" and "Network failure", even though there is nothing wrong with my connection. Game also seems to be dead and abandoned by the devs.
It's a shame since i really liked the tennis here.
I don't know if it was a good idea to release this game as 'Virtual Sports' instead of 'Virtual Tennis'. It is the tennis part what makes this game outstanding. The ping pong part is also nice but too easy to be fully realistic and there is also competition with high quality.
The tennis instead feels real - holding the racket, serving, hitting the ball, playing volleys at the net. After starting the game you find yourself on a training court, where you can try all the different techniques you need to beat the AI. There are six AI characters with different playing styles and three levels of difficulty. This variety will further improve your gameplay. All the characters on the different levels have to be unlocked by winning, and when you have beaten all of them you are prepared to do the real thing - playing virtual tennis online against human opponents. This is a lot of fun and can become a routine just as playing real tennis. I can only encourage all buyers of this game not to stop with playing against AI opponents, but to go online and meet other tennis fans. Please watch this gameplay video to get an impression what it feels like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT-8hLp1iI8
The game is not perfect. The problem of movement has been solved by teleportation. There is a passive teleportation that ensures that you are always able to reach the ball. Thus, you don't see your opponent moving on the court but just appear on spot. Sometimes you may think that he would never have been able to reach your ball in real tennis. This somehow interferes with positional play. However, as a compensation for the downside of teleportation it gets more difficult to return the ball if you are starting from an unfavorable position. The active teleportation is used for net attacks. Doing net attacks against human opponents gets much more difficult in contrast to playing against AI. There are some other minor glitches or questionable design choices but these do not diminish the value of this great game.
For tennis fans this game is a must have and worth every penny.
The Good:
1. This was the first experience I had with the HTC Vive and it is a fun experience. I like that I can jump in and play for a few minutes without much thought or care. I can simply play the game. I can do things in ping pong and tennis that I couldn't normally do but that's ok and it makes it fun. This is one of the first games I load when I put the VR headset on just to warm up and get used to the VR environment.
2. I like the characters you've created. It would be great to see growth in their personality similar to their playstyle. Well done there. I find myself talking smack to them as if they can hear me.
The Bad:
1. When you force "fun mode" off - you aren't kidding. It's not fun. That's usually when I stop playing. My typical experience is to play the set of masters and beat Zhang and then move onto another game. Like I said, a warm up to other experiences. It's cool for those that want a "non fun" experience, but please don't force me to not have fun. You may want to change that naming convention too. -.-
2. Also, I'm not a fan of the design of the basic environments. They look really simple for an overall fun game. The temple isn't bad but I only see that for a little while before going back to the cheesy Vegas scene.
Overall: I enjoy it but only for a little while. Then I need to move on to more polished experiences.
average game at best. tennis is decent, probably the best simulator on the market atm. bare minimum in terms of content and customisation but still decent physics apart from exaggerated spin and an AI that can barely return anything. table tennis however is a different story despite what the arrogant developers think. Touted as the most realistic simulator, it is however the complete opposite. an overly arcadey, unrealistic glorified pong that also gives you nothing in terms of customisation or content. coupled with the inability to reposition yourself in game and a ball that seems to stay on the table no matter how you hit it even when fun mode is turned off. dont even think about mentioning any of these flaws on the discussion though as the developers apparently cant handle honest criticism despite being critical of other games like paddle up & eleven (which are far better games/simulators) themselves. also seems like nothing is in the works in terms of updates. in short: not worth $20. if youre looking for a realistic table tennis simulator, get eleven. if youre looking for a decent tennis simulator and dont care about money or an abandoned featureless game, sure, get this.
works great in Windows MR. I like both sports. Tennis feels especially good and the ball looks real.
Tennis physics fee. better than First Person Tennisp
This is usually my go to ping pong game as well. For single player it's better than Eleven because it has progression and levels and opponents to unlock.
Physics are comparable just make sure fun mode is turned off. Playing Eleven has made me better at this game.
In any case this is a must own if you like either sport. It's just as much of a go to pick up and play game as the other dedicated games but here you get two for one.
Major lag that caused a lot of motion sickness during opponents serves. Not sure why it was happening but everytime the opponent serves a ball the headset starts lagging and I just couldn't do it anymore after 10 minutes
it'll probably be better in the future but as of April 2017 not recommended
Edit: I'm playing this on a 2017 built PC with top of the line CPU and GTX 1080, so hardware is not an issue.
Excellent! I bought it for Tennis since I already have all the Pingpong games. For less than $20.00, you get your own tennis court! The career mode make me coming back for more. I am stuck playing the champions because I am not a regular tennis player and it is not easy to play the champions (which is a good thing)
I wish I can play with someone. But there has not been anyone on line.
The Good:
Fantastic experience - The best table tennis yet
Feel is spot on
Spin and in air bending is just right
Love all of the different opponents
The Not as Good:
I think that when you swing and your paddle crosses the paddle icon on the table...it might make the ball go through the paddle instead of hit it.
When suffient spin is placed on the ball and the opponent does not hit the ball at the correct angle it should spin off in a different direction. I don't think that the spin is applied when calculating the direction the ball should leave the paddle. Either that or we are using some seriously slick paddles.
A nice surprise -- very polished and fun. I've played a lot of Eleven ping pong but I enjoy the single player ping pong in Virtual sports more. I actually feel like I'm playing against different opponents in Virtual Sports where in Eleven I feel like I'm playing against invincible robots that sometimes let me win a point here or there. I'll leave it to others to discuss how realistic the physics are, but for me the physics are close enough to feel like I'm playing ping pong (don't play a lot in real life).
Tennis is fun as well -- obviously teleporting tennis is never going to be perfect, but I've played a couple of hours of it already which is more time than I spend in most vive games I purchase.
I highly recommend this game to anyone that enjoys racket sports.
The tennis is a genuine blast. They solved the movement problem very well. I have played so much the last two days my shoulder is sore!
very good game. physics are almost spot on (especially the table tennis)
BUT, can you guys please add an option to disable the automatic movement in the tennis section? i'm planning on getting a 10m x 10m room, so i want to move myself (physically in real life, as i will have the space to do so)
so PLEASE add an option to manually move ourselves (without teleportation assistance)
edit: still assisted locomotion is forced on us?? wow....i'll only change my review to positive if you add an option to turn off assisted locomotion.
I bought this game mainly because of the tennis part and it feels really good. I'm neither a real tennis nor ping pong player, but both disciplines are great fun and you can choose between "Fun" mode (simplified physics) and "Real" mode ('real' physics).
There are different options for audio, playarea, paddle position and so on and the UI is intuitive and easy to use.
The ping pong part is nice, whereas Eleven: Table Tennis VR still feels like the best ping pong simulator to me in terms of physics.
However there is a career mode, beside partice and online mode, in Virtual Sports, for both tennis and ping pong, which is demanding, AI gets stronger and plays different, and rewarding because you also unlock additional opponents and environments.
Tennis works flawless, you will be teleported to a sport where you can reach the ball after your opponent returned it. It only needs ~two matches to get used to. You can also teleport yourself to play close to the net, which is very difficult imho.
Graphics are fine, some levels could be a little bit more detailed, antialiasing especially on the ping pong table and both rackets are great though, performance is top. Sound design is appropriate, haptic feedback is good.
More content and improvments here and there would be nice, a two vs two mode would be awesome, but overall I can recommend this game in its current state!
Ping Pong - If you think this is fun, go buy Eleven immediately. Eleven is like this game...but cranked to 11
Tennis - I like tennis...real life tennis. This is like that, but dialed down to like a 2
The locamotion is tough because it doesn't move you until the ball is already on it's way back over the net, so when it does teleport you, it's right before the ball needs to be hit
Three suggestions- Listed in order of ease to incorporate...by someone who has no idea how games are made
1 - Add an option on tennis for a ball machine practice. Lots of room for variation of shot patterns to mix things up and the person can sit in the same place for a few shots and have time after teleporting to re-adjust when moved
2 - Option to make the ball bigger
11 - Crank tennis up to 11
3 - Make a racquetball mode. Doesn't cover as big of a distance. Might even be able to squeeze it into roomscale with no need for teleportation. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Think it eliminates a lot of the obstacles that tennis has in making it more like really real tennis
+: Tennis - Wow! Amazing! \O/
-: Ping Pong - This ping pong needs option that allow to turn racket 90 degree relative to controller by its axis. (like racket position in "Eleven"). If you want play most realistic ping pong - "Eleven" is better.
