Very good old-school beat 'em up with fun gameplay and great aesthetics and atmosphere. Unfortunately, both are held back a bit: the former by the comparative lack of tactical sophistication in the characters' moves, the latter by the repetitiveness of the stage designs. At the same time, both are mitigated by the game allowing players to save and just continue at a later date, so the experience doesn't get boring.
Story-wise, it's a classic - arguably basic - plot, but it's livened up by the main characters and the twist at the end (which is poorly foreshadowed, unfortunately, unless you read the characters' bios).
Overall, a definite rec!
One of the my favorite beat em ups. Highly recommend.
I only played 30 minutes and I am already bored - plain one button smash with no combinations or challenge.
Is a badly designed game and not entertaining gameplay at all. It is boring mindless and the CPU is slow and dumb.
Wulverblade is an excellent fit for the Steam Deck. If you enjoy a side scrolling beat 'em up style game, like Castle Crashers, Streets of Rage, Battle Toads, etc., then you'll enjoy hacking and slashing your way through the Ninth Legion of the Roman army!
Extremely fun and addictive
The story is serviceable and enjoyed it quite a bit
The gameplay is addictive and theartwork is great
If you like beat'em ups then easy buy
Also really cheap on sales
Beat'em as a game type needed this. And as artful as the cartoon style is, it is counter to north europe dreariness, so I'll wait on my "Rune" remake, and don't you dare say Skyrim to me, this is Celts, totally different. All that said, its fantastic and worth your time, and fun as hell with a friend.
$15? Give them their money.
I’m sorry to say this, and it breaks my heart considering all the massive historical work and drawing skills that have gone into this game. But honestly, oh boy, if you would ask me, considering the fun value, I wouldn’t recommend this game, especially not to a good friend. I know, this might sound harsh, but let’s start at the beginning.
If you follow my reviews, I mostly play those games in local coop with my wife, and I have to admit, our experience actually started out really promising. A coop brawler where you can choose among 3 characters, with level replay option, what can go wrong, right? And the first level was actually ok. But the longer we played, the more we wondered about the meaning of this game. There was no sense of progression, or even a hint of leveling up, you didn’t get better. The later the levels, just more repetitive mobs were thrown at you, wave after wave, and always the same ones. At some point (around level 5) we even switched to Easy difficulty, just because it was getting kind of harassing. Yeah, that’s how fun it felt like. And at this point you just have to strongly question the game design, seriously, what’s it worth to make a game where nothing matters or varies, where you never improve, but where the difficulty just slowly scales up to a point that annoys you. Sure, having grown up in the 80s myself I get it, obviously it’s supposed to be teeth-grinding old-school (a time when processing power was low and games were rare), but meanwhile we’ve experienced loads of modern titles with an alternate approach that emphasize other entertaining aspects and actually encourage replays (also considering coop, as a reality check, who’s got a spouse at home that longs for that kind of self-torture after a hard day of work?). And this even contradicts all the historical intent the game spreads, like, how can I cherish all the per se interesting facts (hidden in barrels or enemy drops) when I’m in an intense fight desperately clinging to life. I found myself just clicking all those texts away in the heat of battle instead of reading them, and that’s a shame if you think about it.
As a fair disclosure, we haven’t finished the game yet, and though the environments and the story itself until now haven’t offered much variation (it’s mostly about fighting the Roman invaders), maybe the game will surprise us in the last chapters after all, who knows, but at this moment, sadly I’m kind of annoyed and bored by it. Hitboxes are off (if you’re slightly standing above an enemy, you miss), important controls (like dodging) are extremely clunky and unnecessarily complicated (e.g. double-tapping), achievements are hell, and like I said, I’m struggling to find a reason why I should finish it. To be truly honest (and forgive me if this is just my déjà vu of recently playing Paw Paw Paw speaking), I meanwhile sometimes wish that the Unity engine wouldn’t provide such relatively simple means to make certain game types, because in the end, it somehow hurts everyone, the devs, the players and the market somehow (and that’s from someone who loves indie games from the heart).
Controls are abysmal, they are dumb and stiff.
you will get mad at the gameplay from time to time when you want to do something and the controller just dont work
Besides that, its a fun game
Wulverblade is an arcade style beat em up in the same vein as Golden Ace or Streets of rage. What mades Wulverblade stand out amung these games though is that Wuverblade is a much more Mature rated game. The Game is set in the period of the battle between the Britanian Tribes and The 9th Roman Legion. One thing that i really enjoyed about this game was the Art style as well it has a very water painting/pastel look to it snf I really enjoy when devs use this kind of art style. As far as gameply goes if your looking for a fun arcade brawler that will invoke old memories while still having a unique art style this game is not one to pass up
It is a nice game, but too short. I played all the 8 level campaign in less than 4 hours. It is the shortest game I played. The full price it is not ok. If you purchase this game at maximum 4 euros, you could have fun, but paying more than 4 euros it is now worth since after a couple of levels you can see that enemies are repeating.
I love the historical part and the gameplay.
Buttons: jump, light attack, defend, heavy attack, rage, call wolves, dash, wasd.
You can perform: uppercut, knock back, roll/dash, double jump, ground slam, grapple, grapple attack, grapple throw, special attack.
Each character fells different: the girl can dash up down, high mobility move sets. The big guy can smash enemy on the ground. The shield guy has pretty fast knock back move.
Overall, it feels good. I like the design and the setting. Combat feels good. Not as addictive as SOR4. Not much replayable value.
The game lacks level variety to keep player's attention, so it may become boring very quickly. Combat is totally fine - there are grabs, throws, ground hits, weapons, gore and so on, most of modern beat'em ups don' have it. Graphics, story, gameplay is ok. Music - can't remember anything.
I only played the firsts 2 levels so far but I can already tell you that this is not fun to play. The combat system is very basic. This doesn't mean the game is easy but it is monotonous. The presentation and story are pretty good. Gameplay wise there are many other beat em up's that do it better.
One of those games with potential, but ruined by abysmal controls. With a streamlined combat system, the game could be good, but in the first level, you'll quickly realize this game is not fun, but only an exercise in frustration, as the buttons you push to attack are so delayed, or frequently simply don't respond to your input, that you just keep dying unnecessarily, hoping that next time the buttons will do what you want so you can win...but they don't. Until the controls are fixed and the game responds better, don't waste your money.
Golden Axe with Northerners
The game starts out fun. The game really nails Golden Axe's Axe of Goldenness. Then it gets more difficult. And then it gets even more difficult. Then you face off with a punishingly brutal boss. If you have enough tenacity to defeat the boss, you will have a sigh of relief because you will think you are back to more "normal" hardness. But then you discover the game gets even more difficult.
It may sound like I don't like the game. I do. The game is packed with charm and lovely graphics. The combat is fun, but it will beat you down. At least, it beat me down. The "hack 'n slash" is not the genre of game I normally play. Maybe the difficulty is more punishing for a "casual" like me. Maybe you will get father than I did.
I got it on sale and I'm content with my purchase. I doubt I'll ever finish it, but it was fun while it lasted.
Good mechanics, nice graphic style and animation, good music. Only one thing i really don't like so far. There are too many things dropped by enemies, so you pick stuff up in the middle of basic attacking WAY too often.
I really wanted to like this game but apart from the soundtrack/history/art part the core concept of the game is very bland at best.
90% of the times you are just spamming your basic attack, heavy attacks are clunky and your weapon can break after a few uses, there is no progression system or unlock mechanics, enemies are repetitive, the movement is VERY BAD for a side scroller and your hero feels super slow between the animation and there is no fluidity in the combat.
There are dozens of Beat em Up that are better than this game outside, I cannot suggest this game to anyone at full price, maybe during a sale over 70%
Mostly basic attacks expected for the genre, with a lot of chopped off head and arms to throw and some alternate heavy weapons to find. Camera follows you pretty close compared to many beat em ups and the large character models and environment look good. More story than most games of this type with cutscenes before and after each level, dialogue that changes with your character, and notes/lore to find. Levels can go on too long, dodging doesn't always work well. Base gameplay is fun but fairly generic for a beat em up but with an addition of a block and counter system. Good when selling at a lower price for the base beat em up mechanics but made better with the art, raging Scotsmen, and ability to throw heads at your enemies.
Love the game, great beat'em up.
I play on PC but with a PS4 controller. On the controller I use R stick + R1 button for sprint instead of "double arrow" on PC.
I think the control tutorial should be longer. after 6 hours I still think I can learn how to combo better, will look on YT.
I'm not a history buff, but it's an interesting lore.
The production values are off the charts! The GORGEOUS presentation and the actual sprites are somewhat stained by a little stiff animation. It still works as a brutal and well conceived brawler. A good way to put it would be a "black/dark take" on Golden Axe. Which in my book sounds awesome. I like my games as I like my coffee; black as midnight in a moonless night. HAVING SAID THAT, DEVELOPERS:
PLEASE add three players support. What's the purpose of having 3 Vikings if I only 2 can be played simultaneously?

Wulverblade is not your regular Beat 'em up. While it retains the carefree attitude of most Beat 'em ups, as well as the cartoon like aesthetic, it sets itself apart by both it's Historic setting, and it's devotion to history. The story and the setting are deeply rooted in 2nd Century Britain, and the makers have tried to keep the look of the characters and the landscape firmly based in that without being slaves to it. The game is also peppered with optional infoboxes and videos that the player can choose to read/watch if they want to take the occasional break. As a fan of history I really appreciated these.
Gameplay wise, each stage is progressively more challenging as the difficulty noticeably jumps each time. Enemies really do get trickier and trickier each time. Depending on the difficulty and mode the player picks, you can go from fairly standard progress to really hard, particularly in Arcade which offers just 3 lives per level and no checkpoints. This means Wulverblade can be accessible to those who want fast progress and those who want a real challenge.
Wulverblade is really a game of good contrast: It has a fun, colourful side displayed in the art style and the energy of the brawling, and a more mature side in the snippets of real history sprinkled into it.
I get the impression that Wulverblade is going to fly under most people's radar, it's not a game I feel that was on either players or the media's radar, but I can tell that a lot of love and time went into this project. The art, animation, and design are all really well done and it very evident a lot of research went into the game. If this game fails to be people's cup of tea, it won't be for lack of trying. A clear effort was made on this game.
I have played the first 2 stages of the game and I think that at 15 dollars it is a steal.
The art is beautiful, the story is interesting, the animations are fluid. The gameplay is fantastic.
Slash slash slash, oh, wait, B blocks. What if I block just before being hit? @_@ Did I just do a super gory and damaging parry?
Devs, I only beat 2 stages, but I already want more. I'm playing this all evening after I get done with chores. Best beat 'em up in YEARS. I love it.
