Описание

You play as the hapless rabbit Snowflake. You have 99 chances to escape The Pit.

Every time you die the Evil Snowflake grows stronger.

Claw your way back up 21 brutal levels across a variety of areas. "Enlist" the help of other unfortunate critters to aid in your escape. You will need to run, dodge and hide from your enemies to make it through. You are weak and ineffectual!

Don’t slip! The Pit runs through the entire game so if you fall you might find yourself at the very bottom again.

Features:

- Uniquely terrifying: Every element of the game is hand-drawn and hand-animated offering a visceral, grittiness to every Chance you may squander.

- Listen to despair: The soundtrack is painstakingly crafted for the game, with iconic melodies that will stick in head long after you've rage quit! It is also available for download.

- You can run but you can't hide: Players must use their tactics and stealth to evade peril throughout the levels of The Pit, from the molten magma core to the dizzying vacuum of space.

- A Bunny's Arsenal: Snowflake isn't alone. Collecting Power-ups and insane items along the way may be your only chance to survive. A Crabbie Claw is essential to survival after all.

- Optimised for survival: The game is fully compatible with the Gamepad, so there's no excuse when you suck at it!

- Tread the unbeaten path: There is a plethora of secret routes, items and unmentionables to discover, if you're 'ard enough.

- As if it wasn't tough enough: There are 20 Steam achievements for you to master... or not.

- Some like it ridiculously hard: The level design is rigorously balanced to provide a real challenge, in the spirit of games like Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey, Spelunky and Heart of Darkness.

I had no plans to recommend this game due to this and stayed at a Neutral verdict, but if you leave the technical (a)side, this quite huge game for a tiny niche market is a hidden gem! Seeing so many awards on other Store pages — (subjective, but) undeserved at times — the hand-drawn creations deserve an award on their own already 🏆

So much to say, but only a few of you will be interested in this punishing, unforgiving game and I could quote a lot from said (linked) thread 💡

A total beauty of a game,
Design, graphics, implementation, creativity are superb.

BUT, it's so difficult for me (68 y.o.) that I had to abandon it after countless tries.
Didn't even get that high in the initial hell screen.

So, what effort does it take to add an easy mode: a little higher jump, or a little more defense ?
Again, as in some other games, I suppose the dev realized his vision, but a the cost of obscurity for his game, as fustration equals less sales and notoriety.
Do I lament buying the game, not at all, I admire it and will support it with my positive review.

Note:
Too hard for me even after finding the addresses of Chances, Health -initial 2-, Monkey Paws, Crabby Claws, and Puppies (all Double, rounded),
Man, do I suck !!! =)
Update: found address for double jump, bunnies, froggies, and STILL, too hard for me, hahaha.
Got higher, but my frail heart can't take more punishment.
Dear dev, make a trainer mode.
Yeah I know, anyway, uninstalled, but this game is brilliant and even unfinished goes to my better game experiences. Thanks !

This game needs more attention. Great graphics, I love the music, and its hard. It actually almost annoyingly hard but entertaining enough that I keep coming back to it, I want to beat it! Every time you die some of the creatures and item drops change which is neat too. I've only been able to make it past the first level so far.

--I have not beaten Snowflakes chance yet, but do intend to soon: when I do, I might update this review--

My only encounter with this game in the wild, prior to playing it myself, was a lets play which ended with the player seemingly having a mental breakdown and yelling at the viewer not to buy the game... No I am not making that up. Its stuck in my mind since then, and I finally had the joy of picking it up last weekend.

Snowflakes chance is one of those games which clearly did not get nearly enough love when it came out. I am not certain, but I feel like its total player count might even be in the hundreds. This is already kinda tragic as the game boasts a hand drawn art-style, and clearly had a lot of love put into it.

And make no mistake: the game looks good. The artstyle is both clear, and detailed, many deaths have unique animations associated with them, every detail is drawn and looks good. Given how much of the art depicts animals in pain or dead, This does raise some questions about the artist.

Still, I am getting ahead of myself: Snowflakes chance is a hardcore platformer where you play a rabbit. You spend about 60 seconds on the surface, eating corn, then eat some cursed corn, and fall into hell. You have 99 lives you can use to escape hell, so that you can reach the surface and eat the rest of the corn.
As excuses go to explain why you need to do some hardcore platforming, that is one hell of an excuse.

As the description says, you have 99 chances, and once you use them all, your save is done (though you can overwrite saves, so don't worry, the game isn't going to brick itself). However, its also worth stressing: with each death, your character loses all their upgrades, loses any progress they have made on the map (such as any doorways opened), and the maps random elements are refreshed. Death in 'Snowflakes chance' is brutal, even ignoring your evil clone that slowly grows as you die more and more.

The game makes the smart decision to randomise some elements in minor ways, and the map is organised in such a way that you can sometimes go through the same floor in 2, or even 3, different ways. This map has an insane level of replay-ability despite being predefined. Also, if you live long enough to find some keys(crab claws and monkey paws). or work out how to use your upgrades in smart ways, you can unlock and discover huge skips that can allow you to completely bypass the worst of the obstacles. There are also huge holes in the map, where you can fall into lower sections, or even down the central hole back to the bottom layer. So if you ever miss a jump, you might find yourself at the very start of the game (Only the highest checkpoint is ever tagged, so you can just kill yourself if that puts you too far down to want to make the climb again)

This design however means that every time you do find yourself replaying the game, much like darksouls, you will find yourself feeling more confident, and having a better grasp on where you need to go. Some of the shortcuts are pretty ingenious, and will make you feel like you are cheating: an excellent feeling in a game this hard.

I could gush for a long time about how much I love the general map design of this game, but to move on, I will now stress something that I need to put in caps. THIS GAME IS HARD. the platforming is tricky, the obstacles are often unpredictable, and it is punishing in ways darksouls wishes it could match. This is one of the few games I can think of (outside of actual roguelikes) where you can legitimately have your savefile destroyed by being bad.
And trust me, your first save will not reach the surface, your first 10 saves may fail to reach the surface. This game is nuts in the difficulty department, and if that isn't what you want, your probably going to have a bad time. I consider myself a hardcore gamer, I have speedran games in the past. THIS GAME IS HARD, IF YOU DO NOT WANT THAT, DO NOT BUY IT.

Difficulty aside there are a few genuine issues with the game:

First of all there are a few obstacles that are exceedingly random, and one of the worst of these are the "Ghoul-bats." These small blue terrors are seen across the entire game, and fly in a semi random pattern around the map. The thing that is unique to them however, is they basically have no restrictions on where they can fly, and their random patterns make them highly unpredictable. Multiple parts of the game involve huge numbers of these creatures chasing the player (We are talking 30 of them in one room in one instance) However their unpredictability can lead to the question of if the room is even possible to beat without taking damage basically being RNG. There are also other sections where static obstacles fire in random patterns, and can completely block progress if you get a bad pattern. This is a shame, because outside of these fairly infrequent sections, the game feels pretty fair and balanced.

I have also found that the stiff controls sometimes don't seem to respond. I believe this might be down to the fact even the slightest bit of air blocks jumping, and walking off any obstacle at all (including ones that look like they should be flush with the ground) can result in a small amount of airtime.

Another issue is that the game kills you if you quit mid life. (losing you all your upgrades! Ouch)

Finally, the game is, inherently, quite frustrating, I can never play for very long and have to space out my playtime over a few hours, moving on to other things if I die to the same room more than a couple of times in a row. I am usually hesitant to recommend a game that makes me vocalise quite as colourfully as this one often does.

For less than £5 or $10, this game is extremely good. Even if I, like the unfortunate player who introduced me to this game, have a mental breakdown over the final couple of levels, I can't stress enough that I will have gotten my moneys worth. Indeed right now, I very much feel this game is a hidden gem, which deserves more recognition than it is likely to ever get. Is it flawed? yes. But it does exactly what it sets out to do, and does it well.
This game is 100% worth the price... just be aware that you will find it somewhat frustrating at times.

TLDR:
Game is hard, full of animals in pain, and is very cheap. Absolutely worth it for the price its selling at (£2, at time of writing) Seriously, if you are even curious, and are not put off by the difficulty, just buy it.

The 100 lives thing is actually a pretty decent gimmick. Individual challenges are not that hard, not much pixel-perfection is demanded of you, so you just have to be methodical and avoid making mistakes. The platforming is deliberate, but not slow, so you can feel fast when you're on a roll. The powerups are pretty powerful, and you keep them until you die, so they add to the feel of being on a roll when you are.

If you are reading this, you have found what I think is a hidden gem of the internet. Here is my opinion about it.

(Do not mouse over the spoilers if you wish to learn the game mechanics by yourself, as the game wants you to do)

Difficulty

The game advertises itself as being very hard. It is.
This is really not for everyone. If you look at the achievements list, you will see that only 3 players have beaten the game completely out of 250 people. (At the moment I'm writing this). If you look for YouTube playthroughs, there aren't many in depth gameplay videos. This game likes to throw away an hour of hard work on a single miscalculation and then to rub it in your face. If you're looking for just something you will try "just for fun", then this is not the game for you.

You don't need to be amazing in gaming, you just need serious dedication. (about 30 hours to win if you have an average skill level like me and you go in blind, and perhaps 15 hours if you read guides and watch videos. Every run takes from 25 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on your performance.)

One thing I didn't like is that you can only quit after you died if you don't want to lose your current life. That means that when you get good at the game, you need to keep going until you die in order to keep your items (which are destroyed upon death).

Gameplay

Overall, the game mechanics are really creative and interesting. You have two health points between life and death, and you lose everything on a simple mistake. The game rewards you for not dying by allowing you to take shortcuts. (Monkey and Crab statues). You can use various animals as distractions, ranged weaponry, death protection and more. Each one has a different effect. The game is heavily based on exploration, there are a lot of secrets and hidden shortcuts requiring specific animals.

Something I loved about the game is that you often have two ways to go, left and right, each one with different enemies and patterns. Pick the least difficult paths. There are also some hidden shortcuts and jumping tricks to avoid some very nasty areas.

You will find yourself going through diverse areas with special traits and mechanics unique to them such as a deadly fortress filled with traps, a space stage with low gravity and the Devil's lair. Of course, if you rage quit early you'll never see any of this (this is likely to happen, you need to persevere for at least 1 hour until you start to make good progress).

Graphics

As the title suggests, everything here is hand drawn in a style you can judge by looking at the screenshots. I personally like it but it's really up to you.

I love how decorative assets in the game are very rarely reused in the game: almost every statue, building, banner, plant, and the like are hand-drawn separately.

Everytime you die, a short gruesome death animation will occur. The most visually unsettling ones in my opinion are the "mind control owls", the chainsaws and the spike traps.

Performance

I had no FPS issues on a regular work laptop. You might experience some lag with older computers but everything seems to be fine.

I used a keyboard, which is quite responsive. Some said the controller controls are a bit off, but I think that's been fixed in 1.1.5.

Atmosphere and Music

You play as a powerless rabbit in Hell. Enough said.

Not much to the story, you ate a cursed corn cob in the beginning of the game and find yourself inside The Pit.

I liked how there's almost no text to read in the game besides item tooltips and tutorial signs. Everything is well written, I've noticed only one typo in the whole game (If you catch them unawares) .

The music is very good. Most tracks are not something you'd listen out of the game, but they set the mood very well. Some of the tracks are amazing and are definitly worth the 5$. Listen to the trailer to get a feel for it. I especially love the theme for the penultimate stage, "The Lower Gate".

Conclusion and Final Grade

Overall I loved this game. I will keep playing it to achieve the 'good ending', but the bad ending is still a very hard challenge. EDIT: After some messing around with the karma system, I managed to reach the "good ending" and to complete a hidden challenge (Do No Harm) without even knowing it. Still need to do the rest of the achievements though...
SECOND EDIT: Thanks to the amazing guide by Poski, I managed to 100% the game
besides the One Chance achievement (I got close to getting it once by dying on the final boss, but I don't feel like doing it) and the Hell is Other Rabbits achievement (huge nope to that)

Before you buy this, make sure you don't have any other uncompleted games waiting, as you will never beat Snowflake if you get distracted.

The game certainly knows very well how to build up tension. You will feel desperate at times, amazed at others, you will feel like something is impossible and one minute later you'll have done it. When you first start, getting through the first levels will be a great feat, but later on, it will become extremely easy. I loved how I managed to get my first win with only one chance/life left.

My final score is a 9/10. It's extremely unforgiving and seems like the game was never playtested when you start, but when you get the hang of it it's really fun to see so much progress being made. I probably squandered used carefully over 1000 chances/lives, but it's worth it in the end for the satisfaction, which is a lot more than a simple "it's finally over".

Should you buy this game to prove your determination and your willpower to finish it?
If that sounds like your kind of game, go ahead. I think you should.

I recommend you look at some YouTube videos first. BubbleKnight has finished most of the game, which can help you get the hang of it. I didn't though, because there are some events in the game which should not be spoiled!

Good luck...

PS: Here is a link to an excellent (and humorous!) guide by Poski to this game.

Great little project with quite original art style and interesting gameplay. You can easily read about what it is in the description and other reviews, but what lured me in the most is the atmosphere and tone. Sadly, this is not a most polished gem in the pot – main elephant in the room being dodgy controls (yes, even after the patch), so prepare to use your D-pad instead of a stick.

Still, if you want hard-as-nails stealth-survival platform horror featuring defenceless bunny trying to get out of hell – you definitely should go for it. Oh, and that godly 80s music! Hope the dev will iron out the controls problem ASAP.

I feel like this game should be more popular, it's a really cool game. And besides, just look at that artstyle and animation! It's a mix between a puzzle platformer and a rogue-like. You are a helpless innocent bunny thrown into the pits of hell and you must climb back to your salvation.

As far as i can tell from my limited playtime, the whole game is a (really) big vertical level that you have to climb, with a bit of variation in the paths you take. You have 99 lives, you gather powerups and save at checkpoints, all while avoiding dangerous hellish creatures along the way. The hud is a bit cryptic in design, at least at first, until you figure it out. It's a hard game, every time you die, a life is taken from the 99 you initially have and you lose all your powerups. Good thing health upgrade powerups exists, so you're not always walk with one life. There's also an evil ghostly bunny that appears and harasses you from time to time (it also gets stronger the more you die).

I would recommend this game to people who like Spelunky or similar paced games. It's more about patience and planning and less about twitchy platforming reflexes. I have a strong feeling there's lots of things to discover in this game (in terms of mechanics, new enemies and such). It has a fair price, and i think the developer totally deserves it!

ps: i've only played with the keyboard and the controlls are fine.

Snowflake's chance is a very nice game to look at, it has hand drawn visuals and is set in a very strange and creepy enviroment. Its the controls and gameplay that ruined it for me, however.

When this game first came out there was a controller issue that caused the left stick to be extremely sensitive, it was fixed the next day wich is great! but, at least to me, moving and jumping around still seem clunky. Sometimes I felt like Snowflake really should have jumped when I pressed the A button, but instead, Snowflake decided to fall back down.

Another issue I had was with the way checkpoints work in the game. When you hit a checkpoint your (rough) location is saved. Thats it. Any progress you made item wise, or doors open was reset, even though you are higher up in the pit. When you die a crow will drop you back off at the checkpoint but not exactly on top of it. The crow will drop you down the pit at the point where the checkpoint is, so you need to hold left or right to get to land if you dont want to end up back down at level 1. At the end of the day it just feels pointless.

Frustrating but amazingly addictive and fun!

You have 99 chance/lives to make it out of the hell hole you're in. I don't think there is a continue. I've already spend 45+ lives dying trying to climb, seems no end in sight!

Pros:
- Fluent gameplay
- Funny deaths
- Awesome mechanics
- Cute
- Rabbit! :)
- Music

Cons:
- If you fall in the middle, you can fall to level 1 and start over again!
- Very unforgiving. You could die in 1 hit.
- Some areas are too hard!

You just have to play it to feel the game. Here is the first 30min ish of me playing the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loHPqgAC5O0. Hopefully this can get you guys feel the game out!
