4.5 Stars. Good Game
everything i expect from a mcf game, immersive story, fun puzzles, heaps of achievements to unlock requiring several playthroughs
Finally something that isn't connected to the ravenhearst storyline. That alone made it more fun to play through.
The main concept of the story is interesting, however the plot itself is easily forgettable. The game doesn't really excells at anything compared to the previous titles.
As a standalone game I wouldn't buy it, but it felt like a good addition to the bundle.
I really like the style of the Eipix games. The story is really cool and the game itself is even on insane not too hard to play. Even though i never played dire grove, due to not available windows 7, i still like the recurring of characters in game series. The bonus level was pretty short but a really nice addition to the main game. I can really recommend this game
This one was a nice story and a nice break from Ravenhearst lol. Nice puzzles, nice story, a little cheesy voice acting but that is to be expected.
I usually recommend this type of game, especially to younger people. It's fun, it's pretty, and it can be challenging, which is the point. Plus, this one in particular features great voice acting and story-telling. Plus plus, I love the spooky ambience.
+ Good voice acting
+ Nice graphics
+ Atmospheric music
- Increasingly unclear and confusing story line (which is a shame because the idea is great)
- Puzzles too easy
- Had to slightly force myself to finish the game due to above issues
Enjoyable game with nods to older ones I've played. Dramatic themes overall a fun game.
Shame how they butchered the MCF series. This game is so bad that even if it was free, I'd advise you to not play it. Puzzles are too childish for adults, story is too dark for kids. So well done Big Fish! You manage to make a game that no one will enjoy!
Its a good MCF game but not on the Dire Grove / 13 Skulls/ Madame Fate level. I miss those monster puzzles!!
Very good game as are the majority of the Mystery Case Files. Played the game in hardest mode and was not overly hard. Good story line great graphics. The Bonus chapter was very short would recommend.
Nice moderately long surreal/horror (Disney x H.R. Giger) point and click game! The many puzzle types are mixed in terms of skill level required to solve them and draw from many disciplines to diversify the solution strategies and modes of game operation to avoid repetition. I skipped a few tough or tedious puzzles but in hindsight I would have used the guide more. An adult option would have been much appreciated in terms of giving the designer greater freedom to depict and explore the dark themes that were present but greatly softened no doubt by the desire to avoid inflaming and triggering today's regrettably oversensitive marketplace.
short and the plot is more predictable than usual. BUT the puzzles are really fun. not worth the money but if you have it to spare or find it on sale its worth a try
I have to say I've seen HOG fans speak very highly of the Mystery Case Files series- but I personally found the first few (albeit very early) ones I played to be immensely boring. It put me off playing any more until I decided to give Dire Grove a try, and here we are. Because I really, really enjoyed that one, I got this game. This one has kind of a different feel to me, and I although I greatly enjoyed it, it has probably gone onto my list of very good games, that I just won't likely play again.
That's not to say that people with different tastes to me wouldn't really love it however, because there is, to be fair, a lot to love about it. What I must say is that it did make me put aside my biggest dislike in these games: characters talking. In this game, the characters have voices, sometimes in the background, sometimes where their mouths actually move, and while generally this irritates me beyond belief, it was done so well in this game I didn't really notice it that much. (The Scottish accent might've been a wee bit stereotype-y, but that aside.) The voice acting wasn't over the top or too corny. This game should serve as an example of how it definitely should be done.
The cutscenes and graphics are also fantastic- the intro scene especially I found wonderfully done. Quite realistic, and while it's not all bright and garish you can still see well enough to find objects and play the game. The graphics can't be faulted.
The gameplay itself was not too short, no parts of it felt rushed for me, which I find can sometimes be a problem nearer the end of a lot of games. The hidden object scenes were fine, just standard; a few items you need to take some extra actions to find so it's not too simple. The minigame puzzles, however... these are NOT my idea of fun. Some were unbearably long-winded and awkward to complete (although they could be skipped if you, like me, get easily irritated and would prefer not to hurl your laptop out of the nearest window.) This may be the largest factor in why I wouldn't go mad for this game, I don't know, I'm just quite lazy to be honest. It's a problem. I can't be bothered addressing it.
The plot, which is usually the biggest factor for me, was actually very good- although I reckon they could've done more with it. Maybe they did, in another game in the series I don't know about, but in the context of the game alone I felt like there were things I was missing. Although to be fair I do expect a lot from games plot wise. These are meant for fun, they don't have to be deep and captivating stories, but this one did go some way in developing a very interesting story and character. I'd like to see a prequel or something to this, personally.
The bonus chapter that came with the collectors edition was also very good: quite short, but very good. I feel that it did enhance the main game for me a bit- without giving anything away about it.
Overall I did find the game, and the extra chapter, thoroughly enjoyable- frustrating puzzles aside. And I would highly recommend to most HOG fans who like a little bit of death and darkness mixed in. Not dark to my taste, exactly, but close enough to give it a go.

The Game Review
Game Visuals
I want to mention that the visuals in the game are nicely done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game's option menu,
Game Audio
I want to mention that audio for the game is well done. Even though the audio is somewhat simplistic and repetitive. The audio can be adjusted in the game's option menu as well.
Gameplay
There are four different game difficulty modes to choose from: Casual; Expert; Insane and Custom.
There is an interactive map in the game. It allows the player to fast travel between each location quickly. It also indicates that there are tasks that can be completed at certain locations. The interactive map is automatically given at the start of the game.
There is a padlock feature that is available to lock the inventory panel in place to make it stationary.
There are interactive items in the game. Some of these interactive items may require extra components before they can be interacted with. All interactive items are marked with a symbol in one of the corners.
The hidden object scenes consist of the following: Shadow items and Traditional word lists. Some of these hidden object scenes may require little or no interactions. Most of the hidden object scenes can be replayed in the game's extra feature section.
The puzzles are fairly easy to solve without having the need to skip any of them. Most of the puzzles can be replayed in the game's extra feature section as well.
There is a collectible in the game: Puzzle Pieces. They are scattered throughout the game for the player to find.
There are beyond objects (morphing objects.) They can be found in the hidden object scenes only.
Since this is a collector's edition game, there is a bonus chapter, but it can be accessed only after the main story is completed.
There are nineteen different achievements that can be unlocked from playing the game. Each of these achievements does come with some requirements that need to be completed before they can be unlocked. These achievements are in-game only.
Miscellaneous
There are extra features in the game: Bonus Chapter; Bonus Hidden Object Scenes; Bonus Puzzles; Soundtracks; Wallpapers; Concept Art; Trophy Room and Game's Strategy Guide. Most of these extra features can be accessed only after the entire game is completed.
Final thoughts: I have found the game enjoyable to a certain extent. The replay value for the game is low. I would recommend this game, but not at the game's full price value.
I've been playing this series since it started out as standard HOP games. I enjoyed this game but not as much as some other the others im the series.
The storyline is similar to other entries in the series - someone is tyring to do something bad and you are tasked with stopping them through puzzles, point and click style, and HOP games. I did think the storyline was a bit lacking in detail. I finished the game and wasn't quite sure of some of the details of the story. The narrative left things a bit nebulous.
Visually it falls within the realm of past games. Very dark and mysterious and generally appealing. The human animations were a bit off but you can look past it since it is a small part of the game.
Gameplay wise I don't think this one was as challenging as some of the others. There were really only maybe 2-3 spots that stumped me for a bit. I played on Hard mode and found it moderately challenging (and I hadn't played this style of game in a long time). The HOP scenes were also fairly easy. There were some "door" puzzles that didn't quite make sense or give you enough cues on what to do but they're manageable. I did like that once done you can go back and replay the HOP scenes to find the morphing objects. I got all the achievements but two (becausse they are negative based - skipping puzzles, using reset).
All in all this is a pretty typical addition to the series but not one of my favorite titles.
NOTE - this game does contain dark themes and some violence. Not for children.
Good Addition to the MCF series. Story was good, I am glad they added a bonus story for the History of how the incidents happened in the first place and all.
I reccomend this game if you are like me and want to know what has been happening to our Master Detective through out, and if you casually want to hunt for stuff. This is not as challenging as the last ones but fun none-the-less.
Big Fish, if you read this, I am still patiently waiting for the rest of the MCF games to be availbe here in Steam. :)
This game was awesome. I loved all the puzzles. Some were actually quite hard. Hopefully the others will be just as fun!
I got it for Halloween and it was a good choice, for the price (5euros).
The storyline is ok, the overall ambiance is a bit creepy and it surely helps the story. People are getting suddenly very old without any reason.
Tons of puzzles to solve, everything in this game is well done, from music to voice acting and cut scenes, no bugs nor crashes, the difficulty is average, most of the time easy, sometimes hard.
I didn't know what to expect but i am surprised in the good way.
I would recommend the game if you like point n clic, you will spend a few hours trying to solve the mystery around Dreadmond.
Terrific, spooky, lovable garbage. Almost as great as the Ravenhurst games (which are the best part of the series), not nearly as involved or well plotted, but great. If you're familiar with the franchise, this is more of the same, but Goth. If you're not familiar with the franchise, it's a fairly standard HO game, on the spooky side but not like, actually creepy (in my opinion. I'd let a ten year old play it, but your milage may vary), with an unusually decent plot for the genre, and lovely art. This one does have a lot of fairly important nods to previous games (specifically the Ravenhurst games, specifically specifically Escape from Ravenhurst, and Dire Grove, which is not a Ravenhurst game), but nothing that'll keep you from following along. It's a good time, for what it's worth.
Have started to play MCF: The Black Veil. I am not to happy with it. It is slow, dark & depressing. Have played other mystery case file games & enjoyed them. I just want to finish this one & move on.
