Fun and addictive! works on steam deck
I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.
a charming little game
It is a fun game but it requires an active Steam connection to launch. The game froze when Steam disconnected (even though my internet was still working for everything else). I closed the game and relaunched it... It then gave me a message to reconnect to Steam and then relaunch the game. There was no warning on it's store page that an active Steam internet connection is required to run the game. Refunded.
I think it would've been more fun if they'd chosen between a stronger puzzle aspect or given the player more resources to deal with the enemies. The isometric view + controls are challenging enough: I lost far too many times because I accidentally went the wrong direction and a single mistake can be fatal. The movement feels unforgiving - encounters you'd hope would be a close call will almost certainly result in a loss. The enemies being able to mob the player instead of following a pattern is another annoyance.
Shame, because the premise is good and the early levels are fun.
Very simple, old-school puzzle "action" game, in the vein of Q-Bert. This game could have existed on the NES. If you can get past the boilerplate UI and the downright simple graphics, the controls are quite alright and the levels well made. There is enough depth in the 30 levels to keep you playing for a bit. Not that much depth, mind you, but at that price, it's quite enough bang for the buck.
Skyling: Garden Defense mixes action and puzzling in a fast paced and challenging game where you have to run over all the squares in each level, optionally collecting apples and killing enemies (if there are any slugs to pick up) for increased score and a higher level ranking.
Given the close timing and endless risks you tend to have to take as the enemies close in on your position I initially used a controller but found myself going the wrong way at critical junctures too often, so switched to keyboard which was less comfortable but more accurate, especially needed for those larger and longer levels later on.
A key thing that made the game so much fun for me is the enemy AI - each enemy has a fixed behaviour that you learn over time and which is critical to take advantage of so you can manipulate them to going where you want them to go, all at high speed normally. In certain levels you have to deliberately lure certain enemies to certain areas to make it safe to capture certain areas, particularly if wanting to collect the apples before they finally catch up to your location.
There is also a nice added puzzling element due to the use of cats to block enemies or hold down pressure plates that can lock in, or open up, certain parts of each level, and the slugs which can selectively be used to destroy enemies in areas that you are having trouble with on some levels.
Overall this is highly recommended as a well designed and challenging arcade style experience.
